    Holy Baptism Elizabeth Brown meets with all of our baptism families. Here she invites us to reflect on God’s gift to us of Holy Baptism

    Baptism is a very special way that we can experience God’s presence in our lives.

    It is the sign to us that every sin is forgiven and that we are precious to our heavenly Father.

    When water is sprinkled on the head of a baby or an adult, it is a way of showing that they are washed clean of anything and everything that would hold them back from God, giving them a re-birth; and that through baptism they have been re-born as a member of the Body of Christ.

    Remembering our own baptism, undertaking it for ourselves, or preparing for a child of ours to take part not only benefits the person undergoing the experience, it also serves as a reminder to us that we can have new life in Jesus, that everyone can start again, and that we do not need to do anything to be worthy of God’s love and grace.

    Sometimes when we look at baptism as an item on a list of traditions to uphold, we can miss the fact that baptism is all about a relationship forming and growing between a person and God.

    What God desires most is not for us to be fulfilling tasks or duties, but for him to be connected to his children – which is all of us! This relationship has been prepared for, long before now, but we celebrate its beginning at baptism.

    Although it begins liturgically with the Rite of Baptism, it is something that we nurture through our lives – just like any friendship needs time and attention and love. We can develop this relationship by getting to know God better, through worshipping him, talking to him in prayer, reading about him in the Bible, and connecting with others that follow him in a Church community.

    When we love people, we show and express that love for each other by physical signs and gestures – and the same principle is true in Baptism. When we come to God, and things that are beyond words, it is helpful to use signs and symbols to express what is infinite.

    We use three symbols in baptism – water, the sign of life, to show that God washes away our sins and makes us clean – oil, as a sign of dignity, setting the person apart for a role and a purpose – and light, each person is given a candle, lit from our Easter candle, to show that Christ’s light would light their path, and lead their way.

    Baptism is something that Jesus gave us as a way of being joined to him and committed to him; it is a beautiful gift!

  • Advance Notice of Changes to Christ`as SerMice Times Fr David outlines the Staff Team’s plans for Christmas

    This year we are planning to revise the schedule of our Christmas services to respond to changes in worshipping patterns that we have been noticing over recent years.

    Our Christmas services over the last two years we have had the highest number of Communicants since 2003. We hope that we are continuing to move in the right direction.

    However, it is clear from reviewing our attendance statistics that the trend has been a move away from people participating in worship on Christmas Day and instead attending in larger numbers on Christmas Eve. This change is evidenced in both our visitors and regular members of the congregation.

    Last year we increased the number of services on Christmas Eve by adding a second Family Christmas Eucharist, we intend to offer both services again this year.

    This year we are also planning to offer an identical service to Midnight Mass at an earlier (additional) time for those who are no longer able to participate at the late hour.

    Recognising the changes in attendance patterns we will offer one Eucharist on Christmas Day, and because Christmas Day is on a Friday this year we will be offering one service on the Sunday that follows two days later.

    We will then return to our normal pattern of 6 pm on Saturday, and 7.30 am and 9.30 am on Sunday.

    As with any changes we will give this a go, and then review it as we plan for Christmas in future years.

    Christmas Schedule 2015 Christmas Eve (24th)

  • Supporfing the Anglican Board of Mission Overseas Mission Lunch We were delighted to welcome Robert McLean as the speaker at our Overseas Mission Lunch in September.

    Robert was able to worship with us across the weekend of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross before speaking at the lunch.

    Robert has worked for the Church’s national mission agency, the Anglican Board of Mission, for the past seven years. In his role as Partnerships Coordinator he acts to be a bridge between parishes within the Anglican Church of Australia and ABM’s Overseas Partners.

    He enjoys meeting Anglicans from all around Australia and beyond. Most recently he was privileged to see
first-hand the exciting work of the Church in Cairo and in Israel-Palestine.

    Robert’s lifelong interest in the Church began when he became a choirboy at Christ Church Cathedral, Christchurch in New Zealand. He sang there again once he left secondary school and later at St Paul’s Cathedral, Dunedin. While at university he studied history and theology. He is a Parish Councillor at St Paul’s Church, Burwood in the Diocese of Sydney.

    During his presentation, Robert was able to help us to understand some of the complexities and opportunities of partnering in mission with Christian communities in other countries.

    The lunch raised $2,181.10 for our mission partners. In addition funds collected from the mission giving pigs raised a further $802.45. If you have not emptied your pig and would like to do so please place it on the offertory plate when you are next in church and take an empty pig from the back of Church.

    Thank you to Lyn Bellamy, our Parish Mission Giving Secretary, and her team for all their hard work.

    If you are prevented from participating in worship,please contact Deacon Will Johnston to arrange to receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion in your home. Please also contact Deacon Will if you

    or someone you know would appreciate a pastoral visit (contact information on the back page).

  • Parishioners in Profile Rob & Kirsten Copas Kevin Short spoke with Rob and Kirsten who, with their children Charlie and Callie, have joined us this year

    Rob Copas grew up in an idyllic setting on the waterfront at Marks Point with a brother and two sisters.

    Although baptised in the Anglican Church, Rob was raised as a Roman Catholic, first attending Marks Point Primary School and later Saint Mary’s at Gateshead for years 7 to 10, then Francis Xavier at Hamilton for his senior years.

    Following High School he attended the Newcastle Conservatorium where he studied piano and Church music, graduating in 2003.

    After graduation, Rob initially worked on contract teaching keyboard in Melbourne schools whilst studying externally through the University of New England, gaining a graduate diploma in Education in 2006.

    His first teaching appointment was at St Joseph’s East Gosford in 2007, transferring to St Peter’s at Maitland the following year. Between 2009 and 2013, Rob taught across Catholic Diocesan primary schools teaching music. In 2014 he taught at Mary McKillop Catholic College at Warnervale.

    2015 saw Rob’s first permanent teaching appointment to Bishop Tyrrell Anglican College at Fletcher, his specialist subjects being music and religion.

    Kirsten was a Maitland girl, first attending Woodberry Primary School and later Francis Greenway High. She grew up with Anglican parents but wasn’t baptised until 2006 at St Mary’s Maitland.

    After completing a traineeship, she worked at Coles for 4 years, leaving to study psychology full time. Kirsten completed an internship with the Department of Health at Lithgow, returning to live in Maitland in 2008, initially working with the department on the Central Coast and then in 2010, contracting through ‘Head Space’ and working with adolescents at Woodberry School.

    Rob and Kirsten met in 2011 through a dating website. Initially Kirsten rejected the ‘match’ but Rob, in the cyber sense at least persisted and they met for coffee! I guess this makes them the essence (I almost hate myself for that pun) of a modern couple! By the first Sunday in Advent they were engaged… it must have been good coffee?

    They were married in 2012 at Sacred Heart, Hamilton and have been blessed with two beautiful children, Charlie arriving in April, 2013 and Callie almost exactly two years later.

    Whilst relatively new to East Maitland they have found Saint Peter’s to be a welcoming and friendly congregation. Rob and Kirsten worship with their family at the 9.30 am Sung Mass and Rob leads the music at the God Time Family Eucharist. We are very pleased to have them amongst us.

    Shaping the Futhre Parish Mission Action Plan The Parish Council has adopted a Mission Action Plan to guide its leadership for the next three years.

    The plan seeks to further our work towards our vision of ‘Bringing humanity to life through hospitable welcome, generous care, transcendent worship, spiritual learning and growing together for all ages’.

    The ministry priorities in the plan will focus our energies and resources on:

    • Further developing our worshipping life;

    • Connecting with the local community through music;

    • Connecting with families through God Time Family Mass;

    • Connecting with the local community through our Christmas, Easter and All Souls;

    • Further developing our pastoral care within the Parish and at Greenhills Lodge and Home;

    • Welcoming and incorporating new members;

    • Increasing advertising and promotion about our life;

    • Community engagement with the housing commission areas in the parish and Emergency Relief;

    • Holding a parish mission in 2016;

    • Strengthening our adult discipleship programmes;

    • Further developing the Petrus Community;

    • Expanding our family ministries.

    We will seek to resource this vision through a series of financial strategies and the continuing renewal and development of our buildings and site.

    Parish Family Wedding CongLathlations
to Aaron and Elizabeth Brown

    Aaron and Elizabeth were married in Church on Saturday 26th September surrounded by family and friends.

    We celebrate with them and assure them of our love and prayers as they begin their married life together.

    MinistLc Update News iom Deacon Will It has been a wonderful past few months for me at Saint Peter’s in two of the main areas of my responsibility.

    Firstly in being given the responsibility for
co-ordinating a great deal of the pastoral visiting that goes on in the Parish I have been able to be more closely involved in helping people not only by comforting them when they are sick or in some other kind of difficulty, but in their spiritual lives as well, helping them to explore the possibilities of prayer and devotion and who God might be calling them to be.

    This has involved a lot of visiting to people’s homes and meeting them in other places and I thank those who I have had the pleasure of visiting for being so accommodating and graciously open with me by including me in their spiritual lives.

    The second great blessing from God that I have been given here is being one of the facilitators of the Petrus Community of young people that meets for a weekly Bible study in my living room as well as at other times for various social and discipleship events.

    We have spent a lot of really enjoyable time together talking through spirituality and anything else that comes up.

    It is a real pleasure to be ministering in such a dynamic Parish. I hope you’re enjoying having me here as much as I like being here!

  • Details of regular activities are available in the Welcome Booklet at the back of church and in the weekly liturgy booklets. Contact details for leaders of activities are available in the

    Music News Maitland Citc Choir Saint Peter’s Church was built for the praises of God to reverberate around its walls. We were delighted to welcome the Maitland City Choir and others to the church on Sunday 13th September for a beautiful concert and afternoon tea.

    Thank you to all who made the afternoon a great success.

    Men’s Fellowship Update Our Men’s fellowship has always been a great forum for the men of the Parish to get together once a month outside of our normal patterns of worship and have a chat, share a meal, get to know each other better and then listen to a speaker.

    Our speakers are really diverse, we have heard a lot about a great many different things and there is never a time when the speakers have not been found to be engaging and thought provoking. This is evidenced in the great deal of discussion afterwards when there is often time for questions – which sometimes go longer than the speaker’s presentation!

    Recently we had our own Geoffrey Seccombe talk to us about business, heritage and God among other things, and Tony Fry our local Funeral Director talk about his life and work. They were two great nights.

    The dates for Men’s Fellowship in October and November are in the Parish Diary, please plan to join us.
