COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS Report Back: Miami During Spring 2013, the Opportunity Nation team visited seven states, co- hosting events with local partners in an effort to learn more about on-the- ground efforts to expand opportunity. We shared the Opportunity Index , our bipartisan Shared Plan and our policy outreach in Washington D.C. as tools that can aid in this work. We are inspired by the commitment that exists in Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Minnesota, North Carolina, Rhode Island and Washington, and by the momentum generated by all of us to advance educational and economic mobility, particularly for our young people. We are especially grateful to the youth who attended the events, sharing their powerful stories of overcoming obstacles and pursuing their American Dream. A couple of key themes emerged from the community conversations: A desire to use the Index as a way to inform and influence local decisions about programs and policies that expand opportunity The need for more businesses to join in this work The importance of collaborations within states among private sector, philanthropies, educational institutions, nonprofits and community groups Florida’s Opportunity Score is 45.8 points out of 100, ranking it 41st out of 50 states and the District of Columbia. Our partners in Florida are already doing phenomenal work in educational, economic and civic realms that will boost the its Opportunity Index Score. We hope that our campaign tools, resources and network will support existing and emerging leaders in this important state. After the Miami Community Conversation on May 14, co-hosted by Young Invincibles and United Way of Miami Dade, we were thrilled that our Higher Education Council member, Miami Dade College, has emerged as the host for a major Graduation Nation Summit this fall sponsored by our Steering Committee Member, America’s Promise Alliance. We are looking forward to participating and presenting the Opportunity Index at this event.
