What is Lutein？

Lutein- one of the most common Carotenoids widely presented in plantsespecially dark-green leafy vegetables. Lutein is synthesized only by plant itself andlike other xanthophylls which is usually found in green leafy vegetables such asspinach, kale and Marigold Flower.

In green plants, lutein act as modulate light energy and serve as anon-photochemical quenching agents to deal with triplet chlorophyll (an excitedform of chlorophyll), which is over produced at very high light levels, duringphotosynthesis. Lutein is also a very important natural yellow pigment in our livesdue to its color.

Where to get Lutein？

Humans cannot synthesize Carotenoids in their bodies. Therefore, Lutein mustbe obtained through the diet. The highest content can be found in the vegetables likekale, spinach, turnip greens and collards. Other greens are moderate Lutein providerswhich include mustard greens, green peas, summer squash, and broccoli. Surprisingly,the potentially best source of Lutein, and also the least recognized, is egg yolks.There are two reasons: (1) egg yolks have a high content of Lutein; (2) thecomposition of the lipid matrix of a yolk, the Lutein is extremely bioavailable(Ribaya-Mercado 2004).

Of course, the easiest way to obtain Lutein should be through supplements.However, since the supplement researcher always inconsistent in their results, allmajor government bodies of health do not give advises concern the use of luteinsupplement. Currently they do advocate its consumption through natural sources.Additionally, increasing research is suggesting that Lutein’s effects are muted withoutzeaxanthin, which few supplements contain.

Introduction of Marigold Lutein

Many fruits and vegetables contain lutein, but due to the low content, it cannot beeasily separated. As known from the above form, lutein is present in plants as fatty-acid esters, withone or two fatty acids bound to the two hydroxyl-groups. For this reason,saponification (de-esterfication) of lutein esters to yield free lutein may yield lutein inany ratio from 1:1 to 1:2 molar ratios with the saponifying fatty acid. Marigold Flower Extract

Lutein ester is directly separated from marigold flower by recrystallization. Andlutein free is obtained by saponification of lutein oleoresin.

How to use lutein (dosage)?

Without adequate consumption, the amount of lutein in the eye may depletewith age. Leading doctor recommend you to get at least 6 mg of lutein per day tohelp maintain proper eye health. Since your body could not synthesize lutein, youmust constantly absorb it through the foods you eat. Dark, leafy green vegetables likespinach and kale are especially good sources. But you have to eat over 2 bowls of rawspinach every day to get the recommended daily dose of 6 mg lutein. Taking amultivitamin may help, but many multivitamins contain only a fraction of therecommended 6 mg lutein. In fact, the leading multivitamin contains just 0 .25 mg oflutein − a mere 4% of the recommended amount.

According to the report from American FDA, a recommend dosage is 6-12mglutein per day.
