Until about one hundred years ago, we spent 90 percent of our day-time outdoors under natural light. Today, it's quite the opposite. Hou-ses, cars, offices, schools, or shopping malls are all built to beenergy-efficient and well insulated, protecting us from the sun's natu-ral light and warmth.

As a result, we are continuously exposed to artificial lighting; it’s nowonder we feel distressed and sometimes depressed.

Take a look at the following three pictures which were taken using a spectrometer, a device used for ana-lysing the actual electromagnetic spectrum of a light source:

A brief comparison shows significant deficits in the light spectrum of normal energy saving lamps or tubeswhen compared with the sun. Viva-Lite® Full Spectrum Lights instead balance these deficits using a highlyspecialised manufacturing process.

In addition to the spectrum analysis, a quick look at the colour temperature (in Kelvin) of Viva-Lite® fullspectrum light shows a natural resemblance to that of sunlight:

Welcome to

Why is Full Spectrum Light different?

It's amazing to think that even though we spend two-thirds of our time livingunder artificial lighting, we're not paying attention to the consequences for ourbody and mind. Whereas people are concerned about organic food, pure water, and clean air, the element by which our very life came into existence - light - isoften forgotten.

Viva-Lite® and its partners want to change that.

Our mission is to identify, create, and deliver the best possible light spectrum andsolutions for our clients who have to live and work under artifical lights on a dailybasis. Our standard is no other than the sun itself, as everyone knows how goodwe feel when the sun is shining.

Full Spectrum Light literallymeans "the sun’s full light

spectrum that reaches us onearth". Having evolved millions ofyears under this particular light, one would expect this spectrumto be ideal, balanced and healthyfor the human mind and body.

And surely it is. Everybodyknows the difference of how wefeel on a bright sunny day in com-parison to the moods swings weencounter on dark grey days. Thereason for this are the differencesin the spectrum between sun-light and artificial light.

When we look at a lamp wethink produces white light, it doesnot mean that its light spectrumactually includes all seven coloursof the rainbow.

It is well known that the milli-ons of colours produced by TV’sand computer screens are onlygenerated by the combination ofthe three colours (R)ed, (G)reenand (B)lue. But since we are notable to consciously see the actualspectrum behind a light source,we tend not to question it andare therefore not always awarethat common tubes and energysaving lamps have only thosethree peaks of colour (RGB) - theremaining areas, where Viva-Lite®shows colours, are dark.

But to see and feel good, weneed all wavelengths of light. Thegoal of Viva-Lite® therefore is tooffer its customers a balancedsource of light, including a conti-

nuous spectrum, at a not too high, not too low colour temperatureand a colour reproduction as closeto the sun as possible.

The original idea of full spect-rum light goes back over 50

years: During the early twentiethcentury, the US Navy actively re-searched methods to combatdiseases that commonly appea-red on submarines where no na-tural daylight exposure wasavailable to the crew for manydays, weeks – or even months.

Ultimately, NASA provided a so-lution by creating the first naturaldaylight simulating tubes withadded UV output to help thecrew stay healthy even withoutaccess to actual daylight.

In the early 1950s, Dr. John Ottmade a name for himself with fullspectrum light when he devised

a way to capture the growth ofplants in slow motion for a WaltDisney® production that had tobe filmed indoors. Initially, theplants failed to produce blossomsand even died because of insuffi-cient daylight exposure; thiseventually led to the creation of anew lighting range, specificallydeveloped for this purpose.

In those early days, few could af-ford the expensive tubes thatwere made for such specific pur-poses, but nowadays the aware-ness of many people has changed.

After all, how many products doyou know that can make such agreat difference in your life bysomething as simple and easy aschanging some light bulbs in yourhome or office?

What is Full Spectrum DaylightA brief history of full spectrum lighting

Analysing the Spectrum - the Viva-Lite® Advantage.

The spectrum of Viva-Lite® full spectrum is continu-ous and all wavelengths of visible light are present.

The spectrum of ordinary daylight lamps (3-band) are dis-continuous. Areas, where Viva-Lite® has colours, are dark.

Application & Uses Seeing and feeling better are good reasons for switching to Viva-Lite® Full Spectrum Lights. But eventhough Viva-Lite® can light up any room with a better and more cheerful light, there are various ap-plications and typical industries in which Viva-Lite® excels.

Ahigh colour reproduction isthe most important tool for

many companies and colour sen-sitive businesses. Viva-Lite® is aperfect solution as even for ob-jects and materials containingfluorescent substances the coloursare reproduced true to nature.

This makes Viva-Lite® full spect-rum light so valuable for dentists

and dental technology where fa-bricated denture has to match100% with the natural teeth.

Viva-Lite® full spectrum light islikewise popular in clothing sto-res and boutiques. Can you re-member the last time when youbought a apparently blue shirtthat suddenly was green whenseen under natural daylight?

And last but not least, Viva-Lite®adds the right lighting to offices, studies and reading rooms whereworking under artificial light is onthe agenda every day.

See better - Colour Fidelity.

Typical businesses and industries that realizedthe importance of good colour fidelity are:

• Retail stores (clothing, jewellery, florists etc.) • Dentistry (dentists and laboratories)• Graphic design, photo and printing industries• Art galleries and museums

Through a skillful lighting arrange-ment with Viva-Lite®, presentation ofgoods can achieve significant turnovergrowth: foodstuffs appear more fresh, flo-wers and plants grow rapidly and are lesssusceptible to pests, paintings shine more, and jewellery glitters and sparkles morethan before.

It’s good to feel good! And it is afact that light not only influen-

ces our immune system, but alsoour state of mind and general he-alth and wellbeing.

The Viva-Lite® spectrum there-fore aims to create an ideal ambi-ence in homes and offices forworking and living. After all, if theenvironment around us is welco-ming, we automatically becomemore creative and productive.

With Viva-Lite® full spectrumlights, a lack of concentration dueto ill-lit rooms can be counterba-lanced at any time.

Eyestrain, headaches and fati-gue can be kept at bay by minimi-sing the otherwise adverseeffects artificial lighting mayhave.

Flicker and bad lighting may beresponsible for stress, aggressive-ness, hyperactivity and difficulty

in learning in people who oftenhave been diagnosed wrongly.

Viva-Lite® aims to lower stresslevels, lessen headaches and im-prove communication and pro-ductivity in companies.

Feel better - Health and Wellbeing.

Where the health benefits of Viva-Lite® already have made a big difference:

• Schools, kindergartens, rest homes, universities• Hospitals • Offices and homes• Factories, especially for shiftworkers

Simply changing the lamps can be aneasy solution to some of the above mentio-ned problems. If you have constant or re-gular headaches at the working place, justtry it and find out for yourself how muchthe light's spectrum is influencing us everyday.

Enhanced productivity andcreativity, decreased errors

due to lack of concentration andless absenteeism due to illnessare all factors which can drasti-cally improve with good lightingconditions and consequentlyprovide clear economic advan-tages when compared to ill-lit of-fices.

Viva-Lite® full spectrum lightshave an extraordinarily long life-

span while being low on powerconsumption. If Viva-Lite® fullspectrum tubes are used in com-bination with electronic ballasts, besides significant savings onpower of about 1/3, one can ex-pect an even longer lifespan forthe tubes: mostly double the nor-mal lifespan, in other words, one-time less for change of tubes.

Studies also indicate that byusing full spectrum lamps with a

high colour reproduction (>95Cri), reading and working is easierunder such lights.

Work better - Economical and Performance Benefits.

Obvious cost savings, increased efficiency and productivity have been observed by:

• Farmers, especially poultry farming• Zoo's and animal homes (especially parrots and birds)• Nurseries and green houses• Offices, hospitals and the retail industry

These are just a few examples whereViva-Lite® at this very moment and in manyplaces around the world increases producti-vity, saves money and energy while impro-ving the overall health and state of mind ofpeople working under artificial lights on adaily basis.

We use Viva-Lite in our office at home. I think it has made a difference to my daily life,as I feel I get more done when I am in my office now. At first the Viva-Lite light colourseems really white, but my eyes quickly adjust to it, and then I don’t want to go backinto a room with regular lights. Also the fact that it is an energy saving bulb makes iteven better! I am very happy with the light, and it was a great purchase.

Jacob E. from New Zealand

A combination between theenergy saving lamps and thetubes, the modern Viva-Lite® full

spectrum CFL lights exhibit excel-lent properties in both light out-put and full spectrum.

Viva-Lite® CFL - Compact Fluorescent Lamps.

Viva-Lite® CFL's are available in many different shapes and sizes. Unfortunately they are known under differentabbreviations around the world - for example PL, TCL, 2G11, GX24, G7 and many more. For easier identification,we display a large selection of sockets on our website. If you have any questions, please contact us.

Advantages:

• Near identical colour reproduction of natural sunshine.• Natural daylight rendering and colour temperature.• Fatigue-free vision and sunshine-like shadow formation.• Attractive and innovative design.• Pleasant and brilliant light.

There are ample reasons for usingthe Viva-Lite® full spectrum halo-gen lamps: their colour renderingresembles that of the sun up to99%.

This means continuous and har-monious reproduction of coloursand an optimum shadow forma-tion. The light distribution is ab-solutely uniform and has no spotsand patterns as in other cold lightreflectors.

The illuminated objects presentan outstanding display. Compa-red to a standard halogen lamp, the Viva-Lite® full spectrum halo-gen lamp has a lesser infraredcomponent in the beam of lightwhich reduces the outcomingheat in front, possibly reducing a"braising" or a "bleaching" effecton the illuminated objects.

Viva-Lite® HALOGEN - Full Spectrum Halogen Lights.

We are continously widening our model range. Please ask if you are looking for something in particular.

Advantages:

• Fits into any low-voltage (12V) standard MR16 socketof the GU (GX) 5,3 or QR-CBC 50/51 type.

• Available in various angles (10 and 36 degrees) and wattages (20W, 35W, 50W).

• Experience colours true to nature.• Best suited for illuminating images/objects directly.• Superb continuous and balanced spectrum.

The Language of Full Spectrum LightBayonet (BC)Push and twist base. Most common in Austra-lia, New Zealand, Ireland, India and the UK.

BallastRegulates fluorescent lamps and limits the ul-timate current to an appropriate level. Modernelectronic ballasts are more energy efficientthan older electromagnetic ballasts and elimi-nate visible lamp flicker.

Colour Rendering Index (CRI, in Ra)An international method used to measure thequality of light and to rate a lamp's ability torender object colours. The higher the CRI thericher colours generally appear. The valuesrange from 0 (worst) to 100 (sun light).

Colour Temperature (CCT, in Kelvin)The colour of a light source relative to a blackbody at a particular temperature expressed inKelvin (K). Lamps below 5000K tend to bemore yellow/red (warm), lamps between 5000and 6000K are viewed as white (cool), whilelamps above 6000K tend to have a blue cast.Cool-coloured light is considered better for vi-sual tasks. Daylight in moderate climate zoneshas a colour temperature of ± 5500K at noon.

Edison Screw (E27, E14)Used worldwide. The standard E27 bulb is27mm in diameter. The smaller E14 bulb is14mm in diameter and particularly used forsmaller decorative fittings.

Full Spectrum Lighting (FSL)Light sources that produce a light spectrumthat covers the entire range of visible light(380-700nm), no gaps in its spectral output, parts of the UV spectrum, a colour tempera-ture of ± 5500 K and a minimum CRI of 95+.

Light FlickerRefers to quick, repeated changes in light in-tensity. It is caused when the voltage supplied(e.g. 50 Hz) is unsteady. These fine but annoy-ing changes often cause headaches, eye strainand concentration difficulties. The use of highfrequency electronic ballasts (20,000 Hz orhigher) may result in more than a 50% drop incomplaints of problems.

Light Therapy, PhototherapyConsists of exposure to daylight or to specificranges of light wavelengths or very bright, fullspectrum sunlight, for a prescribed amount oftime. Light therapy has been proven effectivein treating conditions such as seasonal af-fective disorder, depression, sleeping disor-ders, skin diseases, neonatal jaundice and jetlag.

Lumen (lm)A measure of the luminous flux or quantity oflight emitted by a source. For example, acandle provides about 10 lm, whereas a Viva-Lite® T8 36W tube currently provides 2300 lm.

Lux (lx)Typically used to measure the light intensityproduced by a lighting fixture. The higher thelux reading, the more light the lighting fixtureis producing over a given area. One lux isequal to one lumen per square metre. Impor-tant: The lux reading changes with the dis-tance to the fixture.

Phosphor (Phosphorus)An inorganic chemical deposited on the innerglass surface of fluorescent lamps. It is desig-ned to absorb short wavelength UV-radiationand to transform and emit it as visible light.Ordinary fluorescent lamps use two to threephosphors while full spectrum lamps use a

minimum of five phosphors.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)Also known as winter depression or winterblues, describes symptoms such as feelings ofsadness and lethargy, increased appetite andincreased sleepiness. Can be treated with lighttherapy.

SpectrometerSpecially designed instrument to analyse thespectrum of a light source. Similar to prismglasses where the white light is dispersed intothe rainbow colours of the optical spectrum.

T5Fluorescent lamps that are five-eighths of aninch (16 mm) in diameter. They are among thenewest form of fluorescent lamps. Require anelectronic ballast to operate.

T8Fluorescent lamps that are eight-eighths of aninch (26 mm) in diameter. They are moreenergy efficient than the older T12 lamps.

Tri-PhosphorAlthough the invention of tri-phosphor lampscan be seen as a real improvement comparedto older standard fluorescent tubes, they onlyuse three phosphors instead of minimum fiveused by full spectrum lights. Triphosphor lampsusually achieve a CRI of maximum 85.

Vitamin DVitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin mainly deri-ved from sunlight. Its synthesis in the humanbody is triggered by sun exposure (especiallyUV-B rays) to the skin. Vitamin D may play animportant role not only for bones and teeth butalso in the prevention of diabetes, cancer andheart attacks.

Our Mission and Values • To continuously create the best possible full spectrum lighting range.

These full spectrum bulbs are definitely the best I have used. Thething I like the most is the fact that they light up straight away andthe light is actually nice and bright and easy on the eyes. It is a hugedifference from fluorescent lights.

Simon F. from New Zealand

One of our clients is very happy with our new full spectrum fluorescenttubes. I too was surprised of how pleasant the light is. Our client toldthat it is as if there are no lights at all. She also told that there is muchless reflection from the papers that are easier to read. Do you happento have stickers that can be put on doors telling about the full spectrumlighting? I´d like to tell others too about the big difference between dif-ferent lamps.

Work Safety Representative from Finland

Our birds feel great under Viva-Lite. We screwed the lamp into our nor-mal ceiling fitting, which works absolutely fine.My headaches caused by looking into the computer screen for hourshave been improved with the lights and our birds seem to be in a bettermood even though it's cloudy and grey outside.
