    LOCATION_

    Steep and Icy.

    INSPIRATION _

This is the middle of 3 couloirs on the North Face of North Peak.

I have wanted to ski and climb this couloir for years, and I try

to check it out every spring and fall. This spring it was almost

ready for skiing, but one section was too narrow for turns and

would require down climbing. Knowing how much snow was

in there last spring with the combination of a big snow and

rain storm we had early this fall I figured the climb could be

in good condition. During a reconnaissance mission I snapped

a few photos of the couloir. From the naked eye it looked like

it would be mostly rock and dry tooling with some occasional

ice. Fortunately after zooming in 100% at my photos I could

see there was a smear of ice that coated the whole chimney, itlooked good to go. I came back a few days later with my friend

Mark Shelp and we gave it a try. At the base of the chimney pitch

it looked like it would be around a 100 feet. It was actually about

70 meters of alpine ice inside this 4-foot wide chimney. It was

single best alpine pitch I have climbed in the Sierras. The last

15 feet turned to snow because of this big spooky granite chock

stone was wedged in the chimney above our heads and provided

a wind shelter for the snow.

    SHOT SETUP TIME_

It was about a 7 hour day, car to car.

    LOCATION_

A spot north of Pemberton, BC

    with relatively easy access via

    snowmobile.

    INSPIRATION _

The snow was really wind blown and

thin so not very good for landing

off big jumps or cliffs. This was a

natural old school mini quater pipe

so the riders sessioned it for a bit

doing small airs and weird grabs. We

had a lot fun and laughed our asses

off doing this. One of my all time

favourite shots cause this is what

    snowboarding is all about!

    SHOT SETUP TIME_

Not much set up time, it was

    natural and ready to go.

    WUSATAKAOKA, TOYAMA, JAPAN

    MARDURANLOCATION_

This was taken at a skatepark on the

roof of a train station in Takaoka. I didnt

really want to shoot here but since I wasthere with gear, and they were skating, I

thought I may as well try to get creative.

    INSPIRATION _

This crew didnt know me so I had to

sort of prove myself to them to get them

interested. I had never shot skating

before and was a bit nervous, but I made

like I was famous and told them what I

wanted. I saw this guy called Wusa nailing

a nice back smith and got him to do it

for the camera. When they saw this shot

I immediately had a handful of skate

mission volunteers and some new friends.

    Good times.

    SHOT SETUP TIME_

15 minutes to set up the flashes and then

20-30 minutes for him to get it right.

TANGLED UP IN BLUEFRENCHMAN COULEE, VANTAGE, WA

    ANDREWJESAITLOCATION_

Vantage is home to some of the best cragging

in Washington state. Its an interesting area

made up of basalt columns providing a goodmix of crack and face climbing. Best of all, its

    usually sunny!

    INSPIRATION _

Tangled up in Blue is one of those cracks

that is a joy to climb. Bomber jam after jam

pulls the climber magnetically toward the

finish. I wanted to convey this feeling known

only to the climber through the photograph

to immediately transport the viewer to

the sharp end of the rope. The columnar

basalt of the area allowed me to capture the

symmetry of the crack and lend balance to

    the shot.

    SHOT SETUP TIME_

There wasnt anything fancy about the setup.

It took about 10 minutes to climb the route,

set a rope and tie off.
