FOOTHILLS SCHOOL DIVISION #38
Administration Team Message December Newsletter 2016
SENATOR R ILEY NEWS
338 – 1st Ave. SE, High River, AB T1V 1H6 www.fsd38.ab.ca Phone: 403-652-2346 Fax: 403-652-3560
With our Christmas break only a few weeks away, we have many festive activities
happening this month. Our school band concert is on Wednesday, December 7 at
7 pm in the gymnasium. Please join us to hear our students play the season’s
favorite songs and to see a special guest who always makes an appearance.
The “12 days until Christmas break” will start soon. We have also been catching
our students wearing their “Colt swag” and handing out candy canes if they are
sporting Senator Riley spirit wear. Keep showing that Colt spirit!
We will be having a Learning Lists assembly once our gymnasium renovations are
completed. Stay tuned!
Calling the class of 1996! Remember putting items into a time capsule? Well it’s
been 20 years and it’s time to open the vault! Stay tuned for this event which will
coincide with our official grand opening of the gym.
Coming soon is our Senator Riley 200 club. More on that in January!
Finally, have you heard the news? We have a new Facebook page! Find us on
Facebook by searching ‘Senator Riley School Council’ and follow us on Twitter
@ecolesenriley to keep up to date on school news. You can also check the school
website to see the latest tweets. http://senatorriley.fsd38.ab.ca/
I wish you all a very joyous holiday season! School will resume on January 9.
Joyeux Noël à tous.

Responsible Use of Handheld Technology Guidelines
École Senator Riley Middle School is open to the idea that handheld devices such as iPods and
Smart phones (cell phones with Wi-Fi capabilities) can be of an educational benefit to students
and their learning within a school context. For that reason, the following rules have been
established to ensure that these devices are utilized in a responsible way within the school.
When handheld device use will be allowed:
The teacher in charge within a classroom will decide if and in what way students with hand
held devices will be allowed to use them during their classes.
With teacher permission, hand held devices may be used as calculators, to access the
Internet for class purposes, to take notes, to listen to music (from a playlist only), or to read a
digital book.
Hand held devices must be placed in lockers, or in the designated classroom “hotel”
Handheld devices may be used during activity time at lunch
When handheld device use will not be allowed:
The use of handheld devices to text, phone, or to social network in any way (without teacher
permission) between 8:45 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. (lunch activity time and breaks excluded).
The use of handheld devices to videotape or take pictures of students and/or staff without a teacher’s permission.
Cyber-bullying and inappropriate access to Internet sites: Any student under suspicion of
cyber-bullying involving other students (at school or at home) will have their privileges
revoked indefinitely by the principal of the school. The same applies to phones containing
inappropriate pictures for a school setting.
Because it is the desire of the school to have students learn to use technology, social networking,
and handheld devices responsibly, students will be given the opportunity to demonstrate they
can be responsible with these devices by following the school rules listed above.
For those students who cannot abide by the rules, their handheld devices will be taken from them
for the period, the day, or possibly longer depending on the seriousness of the situation or the
continued misuse of the device.
For further information, please refer to the Foothills School Division Network Resources
Responsible Use Protocol.
