When you can hear the rumble of the racetrack here at MMBA, it means summer is winding down. The kids going to college are back in the dorms, fall sports have started and if you go a little ways north, the poplars and birch leaves have just a tinge of yellow to them.

Fall in the Lakes Area is my favorite time of the year. Cooler evenings, hunting season is just around the corner and with that comes the MMBA Fall Home Tour. 7 contractors are showing a variety of homes in the area. It’s a fantastic way to spend a weekend. See our website for specific details at www.midmnba.org

The Sporting Clay Shoot at Hunts Point was an incredibly successful event. 100 shooters converged and had a good day of clays and some networking with fellow industry members. Thanks to Rod Pierzinski and his committee on a very well run event. That same day, MMBA was honored to host the August Builders Association of Minnesota meeting. The BAM board also met at Hunts Point and the highlight of the meeting was the new local association in the Twin Cities. Minnesota Metropolitan Contractor’s Association (MMCA) was

recognized as a member of BAM and W. Gohman Construction presented the new association with its first dues check. If all goes well at the next NAHB exec meeting, MMCA will be a full-fledged association serving the Minneapolis and St Paul area.

As the school year starts, the education committee will be starting up with our Trades in the Schools events. Look for more information soon on where events will be held next. Thanks to all of our members for your continued support of the association during the summer and we look forward to seeing you at some upcoming events soon.

MEET THE LEADERSHIP - BOARD ELECTIONS TAKING PLACE AT THE SEPT. 19TH GMM ___________

Getting to Knowthe Leadership:

Ray Austin - IncumbentKuepers, Inc. – Architects & BuildersRay Austin has worked for Kuepers for 18 years and has been involved with the MMBA for almost the entire time. He is currently on his third term as a Board Member, has served on many committees- Programs, Nominating, Special Events to name a few. Ray enjoys volunteering for the Clay Target & Trap Shoot Event as well as the Annual Home Show Events. Ray is an avid duck hunter and loves to spend most of his time outside of these duties with his wife Kim and his 2 golden retrievers; is active in youth softball and is the Head Softball Coach at

Central Lakes College.

When asked what his goal for 2017 as a member of the MMBA Board of Directors he replied “Try to get more of the existing members involved in the MMBA Events, you get out, what you put in to it.”

Ray has made many connections within the organization and has used many of the associate members for Kuepers construction projects; he said he has enjoyed the professional relationships that he has developed over the past years. The advice he would like to pass on to both members and non-members alike is to start getting involved, there are many good people engaged in this association and it is a great networking opportunity for all in the building industry.

Jim Falconer – IncumbentRadco Truck Accessory CenterMy name is Jim Falconer, and I am a born and raised native of the great Brainerd Lakes area. I graduated from Brainerd High school in 1984, and went immediately into the sales world. I have worked in different retail environments over the years, most notably a 15 year stint with the JC Penney Company. I started in the Brainerd location, and eventually worked my way up to Senior Merchandise Manager at the Southdale Mall location in Edina, Minnesota. That is where I met my lovely wife Amy, and we eventually made the decision to return to the lakes area.

Upon our return, I took over a local branch of Western Products, overseeing

the sales and project coordination of siding, gutters, windows, and recreational equipment, to include, hot tubs and pool tables. It is with this company that I was approached by the Executive Director of our organization as to my interest in volunteering on various committees, and the rest is history.

In 2005, I joined Radco Truck Accessory Center as wholesale territory sales manager. Fortunately for me, we are a long time member of the organization, which allowed me to seamlessly continue my volunteer efforts on various committees, most notably chairing the Home Show and Golf Tournament committees.

All in all, I have been involved with the MMBA for going on 17 years. I firmly believe in the core values of the organization. I have been fortunate enough to work with many great committee members over the years, and have built some great friendships as a result. The “Do Business with a Member” value is huge in my mind, and I basically use our membership directory as the “yellow pages” for any needs I may have. It is an honor to be considered for the board, and I hope to continue to serve the organization to the best of my ability for the foreseeable future.

Margie Goebel – IncumbentGPS Restoration SolutionsMargie Goebel has been in the construction industry for 25 years. She has enjoyed multiple years in the manufacturing/retail distribution of building material products and construction project management. Her customer relations and compassion for her clients was a perfect fit when she became a partner of GPS Restoration Solution, LLC., a water and fire damage restoration company located in Baxter, MN.

Margie became an active member of the MMBA in 2009. She currently serves on the Education Committee as well as the Co-Chair on the Golf Committee. She served on the Board of Directors

from 2011-2013 and Executive Board of Directors since 2015 to present.

She was the recipient of the MMBA Rising Star Award in 2012 and Builder Member of the Year in 2015.

She is a dedicated member of the association and a strong supporter in getting involved and having a voice. She believes working together will result in each of us succeeding in our dreams and will continue to nourish a healthy community. She is excited to be on the Board of Directors and will continue to dedicate her time and efforts in helping our membership grow and prosper.

First Supply Warren Haberman is the Branch Manager at First Supply LLC of Brainerd. First Supply is a family owned business that has been owned by the same family for 120 years. He has been there for 17 years, with 30+ years in the plumbing & heating industry! Warren lives in the Nisswa area and has made the Brainerd lakes area his home for almost 40 years. Warren has been involved with the MMBA since the early 2000 He is involved in many events and committees and has been a board member since 2009.

Jeff HansonHy-Tec ConstructionHello, my name is Jeff Hanson. I currently live in Pillager with my wife Kari, my son Hunter (5) and my daughter Kailee (2). I grew up in the Brainerd Lakes Area, so some of my hobbies include hunting, fishing, camping, golfing or anything outdoors.

After graduating from Minnesota State Mankato with a bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, I took an internship with Hy-Tec Construction.

I have been working for Hy-Tec Construction for the past 10 years. I have seen all aspects of the

construction industry from being a laborer when I started, to working my way up to be a project manager/vice president. Hy-Tec Construction has been a member of the MMBA for several years. I hope to continue Hy-Tec’s presence in the MMBA by serving on the board of directors.

Jeremy Johnston - Incumbent Northland Construction

Jeremy Johnston of Northland Construction has been a part of the Mid-Minnesota Builders Association since 2006. He is currently serving on the Board of Directors and on the Education Committee. During this time of service he has been able to council with other Builders and Associates about construction and business related topics.

Jeremy’s goal for 2018 is to continue to serve on the Board and Education Committee.

His favorite aspect of the MMBA is socializing with other members at different events. When

asked what advice he would give both Members and Non-Members alike

he replied “for members looking to get more involved or a non-member looking to join the association is simple, like most things, the more you put into it the more you will get out of it. If you take the time and attend the monthly meetings and outings then people will become familiar and comfortable with you and will further engage in business with you.”

Jeremy has grown up in the Brainerd Lakes Area and say’s its natural to enjoy everything outdoors. Jeremy and his family enjoys camping in the summer and if there is such a thing as “free time” he utilizes it by casting a line on the river or sitting in the deer stand in the fall.

Severin Neumann - IncumbentNeumann ConstructionSeverin has been in the construction Industry for 17 years. He graduated from Pequot Lakes High School in 1997 and went on to Staples Technical College to obtain his degree in Machine Trades. Severin (or Sev as most people know him) started working in the construction industry in St. Cloud in 2000, insulating and roofing new construction projects. In 2004, Sev and his family moved back to the Brainerd Lakes area and started Neumann Construction Inc. with a “tool bag and a truck”. Now Sev and John Hayes are owners of Neumann Construction and their primary focus in on reroofing projects. Neumann Construction has been a member of the MMBA since December of 2006.

Sev has been on the board of directors for 3 years now and is an active part of the education committee. The FUTURE SKILLED TRADES ORIENTATION allows students to acquire not only basic construction information, but also the information needed to understand the residential and commercial construction industry. Students have the opportunity to learn about careers in the industry by interacting with local businesses.

According to the Department of Economic Development, the Construction Industry is supposed to increase by 14% by 2024. America was built by hand. The demand for hardworking, well-trained skilled tradesman will continue to grow. A career in the Residential Construction Industry can provide a great living while building America.
