    Pastoral Concerns

Remember in your prayers these fellow church members:

Our First Legacy Planned Giving Program is our way of encouraging members and friends of First Presbyterian Church to provide gifts to the church through their estate plans, above and beyond annual support. Such gifts might include contributions of cash, stock, or real estate; bequests set up in a will; or provision for the church to receive a share from a life insurance policy, a trust or annuity fund, or other kinds of life-income plans. Gifts may be small or large, and may be designated for general or specific purposes. The legacy of such gifts is both a witness to our faithful stewardship of God's blessings and an affirmation of our support for the continuing growth and ministry of this congregation.

Hold That Thought… A LENTEN LOOK AT BIBLICAL PRAYERS

    Peace, John

Almost every year I am amazed at how quickly Easter arrives in the new year. It often seems that soon after we have finished celebrating Christmas, we realize that Lent is upon us. Easter, which is a moveable feast, varies in date from one year to the next. The First Council of Nicaea (325 AD) developed a complicated formula (based on the lunar calendar) for our annual celebration of the resurrection of Christ. If you want to impress your friends, tell them that Easter begins “on the first Sunday after the full moon following the northern hemisphere’s vernal equinox.” If you cannot remember that fact every year (I had to look it up, as well!), then maybe it is easier simply to note that the date varies from March 22 to April 25. Easier still, check the calendar! This year Easter is fairly early, falling on Sunday, April 4.

Now that the forty-day season of Lent is upon us, let me offer an important update about public worship. The Task Force has concluded that it is now time to return to in person worship for those who are comfortable doing so. After much good discussion about trying to remain safe during this continuing pandemic, the Session has agreed. Beginning Sunday, February 28, people will be able to attend both of our current worship services— 9:00 Gathering in Wilkes Hall & 11:00 Traditional in the Sanctuary. Both services, of course, will continue to be Lived Stream and archived for your participation. Please note two important points. First, in person worship is still not the best option for much of our membership. If you have any concern or compromised condition, please continue to worship online. Secondly, all in person worshippers must follow the same safe protocols as before— social distancing in our seating arrangements and masks being worn inside the buildings. Even if you have been vaccinated, we are asking for your full support for the sake of others who may attend.

Finally, let me introduce our worship focus for this Season of Lent. During the next several weeks we will take a close look at some of the great prayers of the Bible. Each sermon will highlight the context in which the prayer was offered, as well as its inspiration for us today. Of course, learning about heart-felt prayer during these pandemic days is most appropriate. May we practice prayer and patience as we journey to the cross together. And may our hearts be prepared for the joy that waits for us there!

Randy Leo Bell and his wife Meshelle Bell have been members of the church for several years. They purchased a home in Myrtle Beach 10 years ago as a 2nd home. After retirement from a Senior Management career in banking, located in the upstate, they made Myrtle Beach their permanent home. Meshelle transferred from Clemson University to Coastal Carolina Human Resources and has also recently retired. After graduating from Clemson University Randy moved to Myrtle Beach to begin his career. He resided locally for seven years before transferring back to the upstate, but he always loved Myrtle Beach. Randy was very active in many Civic Organizations serving in leadership roles throughout his entire career. Randy and Meshelle enjoy their 6 grandchildren, traveling, RV’ing, reading, beach days biking trails. Randy looks forward to serving on the Finance Committee.

Phil Alfano recently retired from a career in financial management and consulting. Since moving to Myrtle Beach he has continued advising not-for-profit organizations, currently as a Member of the Board of Directors of Helping Hand of Myrtle Beach and of the Finance Committee at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club. His wife Joan retired from teaching special education in Conway, and now has a new vocation working with the Guardian ad Litem program of South Carolina. Phil & Joan love to travel, and spend time with their families, in North Carolina and Texas, and with the close friends they have made in Myrtle Beach. They have been members of FPC since 2019, and Phil is honored “to have an opportunity to serve in such a caring and giving congregation.”

Emily Griffin and her family moved to Myrtle Beach in 2018 and joined FPC in 2019. She and her husband, Garrett, have two young children, Cason and Elizabeth (Laney). Emily is the Director of Auxiliary Finances at Coastal Carolina University and owns Emily Griffin Photography. As a family, they love summer beach days, cooking, college football (Go Chants!), and any time spent playing outside. Emily stated, “FPC has been so warm and welcoming to our family. I look forward to serving and growing as part of our church family.”

Originally from Richmond VA, Brian P’Pool and his wife Diane have lived in the Myrtle Beach area since his retirement from Phillip Morris 22 years ago. The P’Pool’s have two sons and one grandson. They were high school sweethearts and will have been married 54 years this summer. Brian has always

been involved in community service, both here and in Virginia. He is currently an active member in the Myrtle Beach Lions Club. Brian has served as a Deacon, helped move the church to its current location, has chaired the annual Golf Outing, and is on the Remembrance Team and the New Member Team. He is honored to serve on the Session and will work diligently to insure FPC is truly “Where Love Makes a Difference.”

Jill Griffith grew up in Georgetown, SC, where she met Bobby and Pat Wilkes in the early 70’s. Coincidentally, Jill moved to Myrtle Beach in the summer of 1983, the same time as Pat and Bobby Wilkes. Although Jill was a lifelong Methodist, Bobby and Pat invited her to a church dinner at 1st Pres and the rest is history. Jill joined the Peace Corps after graduating from Stephens College, taught school, worked with the SC Department of Social Services and the American Cancer Society before attending Law School at USC. She practiced law for 30 + years at the Bellamy Law Firm and retired several years ago. She is a past President of the Theatre of the Republic, Grand Strand Humane Society and Chicora Rotary. She loves the beach, walking in her neighborhood and on the beach, and enjoys water aerobics. She is looking forward to spending time with family and friends in the not too distant future. She has served at FPC on the Benevolence Committee, as a Deacon, and was a member of the inaugural Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors. She is honored to be nominated to serve as an Elder. She truly believes our motto: “Love Makes The Difference”. Another interesting fact is that Jill met her husband, Dan Riegle, in 1988, in the balcony of First Presbyterian Church on Kings Highway.

Ken Kraft lived most of his first 8 years of life in Egypt, where his physician father served as a medical missionary. Upon his family's return to the US, Ken attended school in rural western NY. After college and graduate school, he accepted a position with Virginia Commonwealth University's Department of Radiology, ultimately achieving board certification as an imaging physicist. At various times during those working years, Ken also served as accompanist and music director for a small PCUSA church near Richmond. In 2013, an attractive woman named Sue caught Ken's eye, which spurred him to retire early from VCU and move to Myrtle Beach. In 2021 Ken and Sue celebrate their 6th wedding anniversary. Here at FPC, Ken enjoys playing piano (especially duets with Sue), handbell ringing, singing in the choir, and also volunteers with Community Kitchen and the Caribbean Youth Network in the Bahamas. As an elder, Ken looks forward to promoting sacred music and the arts to enhance worship at FPC.

Beverly Jones and her husband, Jack, have been members of FPC for 5 years after moving to Myrtle Beach from northeast PA. She has two daughters and three grandchildren. She retired after 25 years with a major insurance company. Her hobbies include reading, traveling, sewing & crafts. She is currently on the Executive Board of a local non-profit, member of the Myrtle Beach Lions Club & a fun local Book Club. She is a member of Abigail Circle, Bible Study, Women’s Retreat Committee, and volunteers for the Love Boat and flower delivery here at FPC. As a church member in previous locations, Bev was an Elder, choir member, Financial Secretary, and Bible Study leader. “We were led to FPC by a member within days of our move here, and one Sunday was all we needed to know we were in the right Church home. I am honored to be nominated as an Elder and pray that I can be a part of the future of this community of believers.”

Bob Lane and his wife of 50 years, Karen Paulos Lane, moved to Myrtle Beach in 2015 from Columbus, Ohio. They have been members of five different Presbyterian churches in Greensboro, NC, Raleigh, NC, Charlotte, NC, Nashville, TN and Columbus, Ohio. Karen and Bob both served as Elders at Worthington Presbyterian Church. Bob was an executive with Wachovia Bank for 23 years before moving into consulting with two different companies. He later served as President of Keybank in Columbus, OH, before moving to the academic world teaching Finance at the Fisher College of Business at Ohio State University as Senior Lecturer. Upon their move to Myrtle Beach, Bob joined the faculty at Coastal Carolina University and taught Economics and Finance. He now serves as an Executive-in-Residence. Bob currently serves as Co-Chair of the Legacy Committee with Dr. Charles Elliott and also serves on the Endowment Committee. Karen and Bob have two daughters, one of which is Ashley Setzer who serves as Deacon at FPC. They have four grandchildren that reside in Myrtle Beach and Charleston, SC.

Julie Schexnayder and her family are long time members of FPC, joining in 1996 when they moved to the area as a family of four! As their family grew, so did their involvement in the life of the church. Julie served as a deacon and then was ordained as an elder in 2003. In addition to her service to the church, Julie is a practicing physical therapist at Select Therapy, specializing in neurological diagnoses. She has also been an adjunct faculty member at Horry Georgetown Technical College for the past ten years. In addition to education, Julie has a heart for missions. Her prayer as she accepts the call to return to “active duty” is based on Psalms 143:8. “Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.”

Diane Parker is a retired Dental Hygienist who moved to Myrtle Beach from Raleigh, NC, in 2004 where she was a member of Grace Community Church. While a member there, she served as an elder and was actively involved in Mission Trips to Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico, and Belarus. Since moving to Myrtle Beach, she has prepared and served dinners at New Directions Men's Shelter and is presently serving on the Missions Committee at FPC. She has been a Stephen Minister for 5 years and is presently a Stephen Leader, as well as a member of the Explorers Sunday School Class. Her hobbies are being outside enjoying nature, exercising, gardening, listening to music, and reading. What an honor to be nominated as Elder and to be a part of the exciting adventure and opportunity that FPC has in serving our community.
