POWERWEEK
March 5-9This year Cherry Creek High School will once again partner with The Gabby Krause Foundation/Bags of Fun. This is the third year Creek has worked with Bags of Fun to help children stuggling with life threatening illnesses or conditions. Bags of Fun will pro-vide these children with interactive games and toys. The idea is to recapture a child’s innocence and playfulness even while in the hospital. Bags of Fun hopes to deliver as many personally designed and hand-packed backpacks as they can to the identified children in Colorado hospitals. They estimate that each bag has roughly $500 worth of toys and games included. For more information regarding Bags of Fun, please see their website: https://bagsoffun.org/.
In addition to general fundraising, Power Week will be filled with all the campus favorites: Bucket Ball, The Brain Bowl, Mr. Creek Pageant, and the Talent Show. Watch the Week at Creek for more information about these popular activities.
Dear Bruins,
The month of February is always busy with the start of standardized testing and the end of winter sports. Feb-ruary is also one of the last months when we have long stretches of uninterrupted instructional time before the spring, which is filled with activity.
In February, the students begin thinking about next year. Your child will soon begin the process of preregistration, which is when they decide what courses to take next year. The teachers and counselors will be an integral part of this process, but I also encourage parents to stay in the loop. It is wise to make sure your child can handle the workload that they plan to take on in the upcoming school year. It is also important that your child make registration decisions with care, as there are opportunities to make schedule changes, but they can often times be limited. Many factors go into selecting classes. They include graduation requirements, interests, future plans and even friends’ plans. While it would be ignorant to think that friends are not part of the equation, it is important that we advise the students to make decisions that are best for them and not based on others. Every year we have at least one couple who break up and then have every class together, which I guess can be a lesson too. Do not hesitate to contact any of us here at Creek if you have any questions about the scheduling process.
At the beginning of December, we were pleased to have selected the Teachers of the Year for Cherry Creek High School. With 230 faculty members, we are blessed with outstanding teachers that make this decision challenging for the selection committee. This year we were pleased to select two teachers for the honor. They are Marti Benham and Jocelyn Nguyen-Reed. Marti has taught debate at Cherry Creek High School since 2003. She has played a critical role in building one of the top debate programs in the country. This year we are ranked #11 nationally thanks to Marti and her superb instruction. Jocelyn is a teacher in the Math Department having taught computer science since 2009. She has taken our computer science program from a small program with basic courses to one of the biggest in the state. Jocelyn has created new courses beyond the AP curriculum and mentored many other teachers from around the state. Marti and Jocelyn have made a differ-ence for many students during their tenure at Cherry Creek. They are talented teachers who have earned the respect of the faculty and the
students alike due to their commitment to their craft and our students. Both can best be described as “kid mag-nets” due to their ability to relate to all students. Each are well deserving of the greatest honor a teacher at Cherry Creek High School can earn. Congratulations Marti and Jocelyn!
Recently we learned that we have two All Star Honorees at Cherry Creek. The All Star Award goes to dedicated classified employees who go above and beyond the call of duty. There are only 26 recipients in the district and two of them are at Cherry Creek. The first is Mary Ann Goff. She works as the TA who supports both English and Social Studies departments. Mary Ann runs the English/Social Studies Resource Center and regularly works with thousands of students and teach-ers. The second recipient is Sheletha Anderson. Sheletha is a security guard at Cherry Creek and has been since the 1990’s. She not only keeps the campus safe but also serves as a mentor and support to many students.
Winter Break may seem like a distant memory but I do hope it was relaxing. We have a lot of learning and activity in front of us. I hope to see you on campus at any of the upcoming activities. Have a wonderful month.
Sincerely,
Ryan T. SilvaPrincipal
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
FROM THE DISTRICT
The following is Dr. Bull’s message to the community about his decision to retire:
Over the past five years, I’ve approached the job of superintendent the only way I know how – with dedication, perseverance and investment. Our work as a community to ensure excellence for our students has been very personal for me. District growth, a bond and budget election, innovation, career and technical education, teacher collaboration, start times – these aren’t abstract issues for any of us. In Cherry Creek Schools, these questions are matters of weight, importance and immediacy.
It’s hard to find an “off” button when you’re doing that kind of work, and that’s part of the reason-ing behind a very difficult decision. I will retire from the role of Cherry Creek School District superintendent at the close of the 2017-18 academic year. I will make this move to spend more time with my wife and kids; I will leave my post to pay proper attention to health concerns. This isn’t an easy choice. I’ve been blessed to serve as the superintendent of the Cherry
Creek School District, an organization that’s taught me the true meaning of excellence. To say my departure will be bittersweet is a vast understatement. Our community is my home; after more than three decades in the district, I still find inspiration and direction in the example of teachers, administrators and professionals at every building in CCSD. I find guidance and hope for the future in the example of students, parents and community members. It’s been an honor to learn from all of you, and I look for-ward to watching our progress from a different vantage.
Thank you for giving me the chance to lead. Thank you for teaching me the definition of excellence.
-- Harry C. Bull, Jr., Ed. D.

A Letter from the PTCO President
It’s hard to believe February is already here. May is just around the corner!
Many thanks to Himanvi Kopuri, Toby Lee, and Tamara Sriram of the CCHS Speech and Debate team for their wonderful presentation at our January General PTCO meeting. I hope you were able to see how talented these students are, and if not, I encourage you to find a way to see them in action. Creek’s Speech and Debate program is nationally recognized, and these kids are some of the best and brightest!
Please join us for Creek’s Annual STEM PTCO Meeting on February 8 at 6 PM in Shllinglaw/West Cafe. If you have not attended presentations by STEM students in the past, you will be amazed by the quality of these clubs and the students participating in them. The meeting begins at 6 PM in the Shillinglaw lecture hall, mov-ing to the West Cafe with an opportunity for one-on-one discussions with the students. You don’t want to miss this meeting; it only happens once a year!
The Principal’s Brown Bag will be held on February 21, from 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM in the West Main Office con-ference room. The Accountability Committee will meet February 27 from 5-6:30 PM also in the West Main Conference room. The CCCLN Day at the Capitol will be held on February 27 beginning at 8 AM. More information to follow.
I’d like to thank Jill Henden for serving as our PTCO Parent’s Council representative, Heather Carroll for be-ing the School Store Volunteer Coordinator, Tina Roark and LeeAnn Williams for their good work editing the Home Herald, and Heather Jordan for coordinating our Media Center volunteers. We couldn’t do it without our PTCO committee chairpeople stepping up to volunteer. Cherry Creek High School PTCO requires many committees and committee chairpeople to ensure things run smoothly. If you are interested in serving on Creek’s PTCO slate next year, please reach out to our Past President and current Nominating Committee Chairperson, Susan Honeyfield, at [email protected]. There are many ways to get involved.
Please consider assisting with Creek’s After Prom. The After Prom committee is headed up by Sam Morris, [email protected]. After Prom has been, and remains, a priority for both the CCHS Administra-tion and your PTCO to keep our students having fun and staying safe in the hours following Prom. Please contact Sam if you can help.
The PTCO is in the process of reviewing grant applications submitted by Creek’s teachers and staff in January. We look forward to making allocation decisions soon. Many thanks to Principal Ryan Silva, Sharon Webb, Regina Seylhouwer, and Jane McMahon in the West Main Administrative Office for their help in making this process run smoothly.
Thanks for all you do for Cherry Creek High School! Happy Valentine’s Day!

COUNSELING CONNECTIONYes, it is that time of year again - time for students to select and register for their courses for next school year. It might seem early to start planning for next year since we are only halfway through our current year, but Cherry Creek High School has a unique process for scheduling classes. We are the only high school in the district which allows stu-dents to have a little more control in the process by giving students the opportunity to build their own schedules this spring.
Current Juniors will receive their registration materials through their English classes on Wednesday, January 31st. Each student will receive a course registration form, an unofficial copy of his/her transcript and instructions about the registration process, along with information about choosing courses and other related college planning items. Counselors have been meeting with juniors and parents for Junior Conferences which began in December. Conferences will continue during the spring semester. If your junior has not yet scheduled this appointment, please have him/her come to the Counseling Office to schedule it. We encourage parents to join us at this very important meeting with your student’s counselor. Creek 301 is listed on spring semester schedules. In order to complete this junior year curriculum with a passing grade, students need to attend their junior conference, complete their junior conference worksheet, complete a college search and add colleges to their list, update their 4 year plans, take the district-mandated ACT in February and the state-mandated SAT test in April.
Current Sophomores will receive their registration materi-als through their English classes on Thursday, February 1st. Each student will receive a course registration form
and an unofficial copy of his/her transcript, along with instructions about the registration process and information about choosing courses. Sophomores will also receive information about Creek 201 which appears on their schedules this semester. This sophomore curriculum is comprised of 2 assigned sessions during the weeks of March 5 and March 12 which addresses the importance of planning ahead and focuses on career and college explo-ration. To successfully complete the Creek 201 curriculum, students will need to attend the two Creek 201 sessions, complete the Strengths Explorer, add 1 Career Pathway, complete Do What You Are, identify two careers of interest and update their 4 year plans in Naviance.
Current Freshmen will receive their registration materi-als at an assembly on Tuesday, February 6th during their English classes. Counselors will provide course registra-tion forms and unofficial copies of student transcripts along with instructions about the registration and self-scheduling process. Freshmen may want to reference their 4 year plans which they entered in Naviance before they finished Creek 101 last semester. The 4 year plan, which is a state mandate, will help students plan their schedules for sopho-more year, as well as help them plan to meet high school graduation requirements and college admission require-ments during their 4 years at Creek.
All Juniors, Sophomores and Freshmen must complete their course registration forms and acquire signatures from their current core course teachers and parent before their class is scheduled to pre-register electronically for classes. Between Tuesday, February 12 through Thursday, Febru-
ary 22, students will enter their course selections into a Power School database (Freshmen and Sophomores in Social Studies and Juniors in English classes).
Current eighth graders will receive their registration ma-terials at their middle schools. The CCHS counselors will present registration information and provide instructions for course selection when the middle schools visit Creek on January 30th and 31st.
Once all of the course selections have been made, a master schedule is built based on the number of stu-dents requesting each course. In the spring, all students (except current eighth graders) will be assigned a time to build their course schedules for the upcoming year in the Registrar’s Office. Current eighth graders’ course sched-ules will be automatically built this summer.
It is imperative that ALL students take this process very seriously and think through their course selections care-fully for a number of reasons:
1. To ensure a solid academic foundation.2. To ensure selected courses are in accordance with a
student’s area of interest.3. To challenge themselves academically and prepare
for college rigor.4. To ensure that graduation and college admissions
course requirements will be met.
Because of the importance of the course selection pro-cess, we ask that you work closely with your student to help him/her make the best course selection for his/her situation. Classes are typically very full and changes may not be possible next year.
If you have any questions concerning your student’s course registration for next year, please contact your student’s assigned counselor. The two weeks prior to the onset of class pre-registration are extremely busy in the Counseling Office. If you have questions for your student’s counselor, please email or contact the counselor by phone as far in advance as possible. We also have counselors on call each day during periods 4, 5 and 6 in the Counseling Office and any of us are able to answer any questions your student might have around course selection or the registration process.
For questions regarding current eighth graders, please contact the student’s middle school counselor.

10th and 11th grade parents and students should mark their calendars for the “Denver Spring College Fair” on Sunday, April 15 starting promptly at 1:00 pm at Cherry Creek High School! Students can register for this free fair at www.gotocollegefairs.com.
Wow, the first semester went by so quickly! We are well underway with over 80% of the senior class applying to at least one college, “Creek to College” was in December, “Evening with the College Deans” and “Planning and Paying for College” were in January, and we started junior conferences! In addition, we had a record fall for number of colleges that visited Creek and we have processed over 3,500 transcript and application requests! It is important that I acknowledge and thank our post grad specialists: Kathy Franklin, Christine Gill, and Caitlin Lovelace for their friendly, efficient hard work!

You should be completing your college applications if you have not done so already. Remember, the sooner you get your Transcript Request Form to us, the sooner we are able to send your materials - and the sooner you will receive an admission decision. Remember to check our online Scholarship Listing on Naviance. This listing is very comprehensive, and offer s links to websites and applications. We are constantly adding new scholarships, so it pays to check this list often. If you have not yet logged onto Naviance, or have forgotten your password, stop by Post Grad for assistance. Remember to check the links on Naviance, as we have added national scholarship databases, as well as checking Post Grad’s list. Occasionally, seniors may receive a notice from a college that their application is incomplete. Please do not panic! Oftentimes, colleges have several applications and materials that need to be processed and downloaded, and “incomplete” notices are sent out before all the components have been linked to an application. We encourage families to call the college first to see if the missing item has since been found and linked to their file. If it is still missing, please let us know immediately as we can provide follow-up assistance and direction. You can track the status of your college and scholarship applications online at Naviance anytime. As well, we can resend any information necessary. Seniors, as you receive admission decisions from colleges and receive news of scholarships, share your news with us in Post Grad! We enjoy hearing about your successes, can update your status in Naviance, and are here to help if you need more options.
We hope that you and your parents were able to attend one of our three programs over the last two months. If you have not already done so, please schedule your Junior Conference! Parents are invited and highly encouraged to attend. Our counselors’ schedules fill quickly so don’t delay. During this conference, we will discuss senior year course selection, credits for graduation, and help you begin your postgraduate planning. Be sure to complete your Junior Conference Questionnaire on Naviance before your appointment. Parents: Please complete the new Junior Parent Questionnaire as well! We will also introduce you to all of the amazing resources in our Post Grad Center.
ACT and SAT testing is coming up! District ACT – February 27, 2018. Juniors will register through their English class. To register for an additional ACT in the fall of senior year, go to www.actstudent.org. Colorado SAT - April 10, 2018. Juniors will register through their English class. To register for an additional SAT in the fall of senior year, go to www.collegeboard.org.
Online test preparation for the ACT and SAT is available on Naviance! The timing is perfect to do some test prep on your own to get ready for the April 10 SAT and the upcoming ACT exams. Please follow the steps below to receive the most benefit from our online test prep: 1. Log onto Naviance. 2. Scroll down on the home page under links until you are able to click on “ACT Test Prep - MTP” or “SAT Test Prep – Khan”. 3. Click on either, and sign in by creating a username and password. 4. For the most comprehensive ACT/SAT preparation click on ACT/SAT course on the right-hand side and begin. Juniors, if you are enjoying a quiet Spring Break at home, are tired of playing video games, and have finally caught up on your sleep--start preparing for the SAT!
sophomores Counselors will meet with all sophomores at the Sophomore Pre-Reg Assembly, where students will be given their transcripts to review and introduced to “Creek 201,” a series of milestones that encourage career and college exploration. Sophomores will be required to attend two class sessions with their counselors to begin exploring their career interests on Naviance. Counselors will encourage students to start thinking about their strengths and how those strengths can help them create a plan for their future.
freshmen Congratulations on completing your first semester of high school! It is important to start second semester strong academically and to begin thinking about how you will get involved in your high school experience. Explore athletics, clubs, or fine arts and find something to commit time and effort in that genuinely interests you and you can find passion in for years to come!

Hello Bruins-
Our Ethnic Fest celebration is on February 1st. This event will take place in the IC building from 5-8 p.m. Several of our student organizations will sell goods, foods and services. There will also be performances by groups from our community, and an open mic lounge. We hope your students will join us for this always fun event!
The following day, we will welcome several speakers to the campus for our annual “Global Awareness Day.” These speakers will present a variety of topics to our students.
Our Spring musical, Bye Bye Birdie, opens on February 28th, at 7:00 p.m. and will run through March 3rd. Tickets will be available through the CCHS website and at the box office beginning on February 19th.
Next, we will have our annual Creek Power Week March 5 -9. We hope that your students will participate in several of these spring spirit week events. More information will be included in the March issue of the Home Herald, but you can look forward to the Mr. Creek contest, a Bucket Ball Tournament, and the always popular Talent Show!
We also want to recognize our Speech & Debate team who are currently ranked 1st in the state of Colorado and 12th in the Nation! They will be traveling to UC Berkeley in February. Our DECA students will also be sending 169 students to compete at state this month.
Lots of great things happening at Creek! Way to go Bruins! Like always, please call if you have any questions or concerns.

The Kathleen D. Smith Library Check it out!
The Smith Library received some much needed TLC last summer. New flooring and carpet were installed on the entire second level of the IC building. Computer tables with cabling systems replaced the former set-up in both of our computer labs and the drop-in computer area in the main library. All of our seating was updated, and we added some new lounge furniture for students to enjoy upon entry to the library. We know the Smith Library is a special place, where over 1700 students visit daily. Our library staff is thrilled we can give our students another reason to visit this beautiful space.
January Highlights
Our e1ev8 Health & Wellness program was a huge success! Nearly 500 students participated in events at our halfway point in the program.
Mrs. DeCesare’s US History 9 students researched Nota-ble Americans of the 2oth Century for their analytical research project.
Mrs. Cave and Mrs. Chap-man’s students participated in some “speed dating with books” to better select nov-els for their independent reading projects.
Ms. Erickson’s World History classes completed research for their required Analytical Research Paper.
Student Art Contest In celebration of the Denver Art Museum’s upcoming, exclusive ex-hibit Degas, A Passion for
Perfection, the library is hosting a Stu-dent Art Contest. Students should channel their inner Degas to produce an original work communicating their perception of Creek. Submitted pieces will be on display during the month of February. A jury will select a Best of Show, 1st and 2nd place win-ners. Tickets to the exhibit and gift certificates to Meininger’s Art Supply store will be awarded. Select artwork will be honored in a permanent loca-tions on the Creek campus.
1. Work of art should be embedded with theme of “Impressions of Creek” and aesthetically beauti-ful
2. Entries must be original works and personally created
3. All mediums are acceptable
4. The size of the artwork must not exceed 18” x 24”
5. Entries must be delivered to the library no later than Friday, Feb 9th at 3:45 p.m.

Business Department Classes Offered at CCHS:
A New GraduationTradition at Creek
In case you have not heard the graduation gowns are changing. We had an opportunity this year to design our very own, CCHS custom gown and we are thrilled with the results. The new robes include the CCHS Crest and are made with a higher qual-ity fabric. The gown will be on display during the first week of February in front of Activities.
The improved gown is something that we believe the Class of 2018 will be excited about. For many years, the graduating classes have worn two col-ors of gowns, but starting this year, a NEW TRADI-TION BEGINS. This is the year we chose to unify the class, to have the class wearing a gown that truly represents all students at Cherry Creek High School, and it will be a memento that your student can keep for years to come.
Additional graduation information is available to Seniors in their creek mail. Parents may use this link to check out the important dates and events associated with graduation (scroll to the bottom of the page - http://cherrycreek.cherrycreek-schools.org/ActivitiesAndClubs/Pages/Activities.aspx). Please do not hesitate to come talk to ei-ther of us if you have questions or concerns.
