The Passion of Our Lord: An Act of Love By: Anusha Mathias

The Passion of our Lord. It is the epitome of our Christian faith. It has saved us of our sins.

We believe as followers of Jesus Christ He was crucified to save us of our sins but it was out

of LOVE that the Father let his son be the ultimate sacrifice. It was known since Jesus was a baby that He

would suffer for the people. When Mary and Joseph presented Jesus in the temple they came upon Simon

who said, “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes

have seen your salvation” and “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to

be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will

pierce your own soul too.” Simon described Jesus as his salvation and told Mary that he would suffer for the

people of Israel. Even though it was predestined for Jesus to die for our salvation, the reason that the Father

allowed his only son to be crucified was because of his LOVE for each one of us.

The Passion of Christ begins after the Last Supper, when Jesus traveled to the Garden of

Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives. There he prayed, “Father, if it is your will, take this cup from me; yet

not my will but yours be done” (Luke 22:42). He prayed so intensely that “his sweat became like drops of

blood falling to the ground” (Luke 22:44). Jesus did not want to suffer a painful death on the cross but He

did it to obey His Father. Jesus was then arrested and tried before the Sanhedrin and condemned to death

for blasphemy. Although, they needed the approval of Pontius Pilot to execute Jesus. When Jesus was

brought before Pontius Pilot it was said that Jesus should be put to death because of treason and subversion

of the government. But, Pontius Pilot could not find Jesus guilty of anything. So Pontius pilot had Jesus

scourged at the pillar. The people insisted that Jesus should be crucified so Pontius Pilot had Jesus crucified

to satisfy the people. Jesus carried his cross and was crucified. Why would the Father let His son experience

such agony? Simply because He loved his people. While on the cross Jesus says, “Father, forgive them, for

they do not know what they do” (Luke 23:34). His love for us was so great that He even asks His Father to

forgive those that caused Him such agony.

John 3:16 sums it up perfectly, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son”. Let us show the same Christ Love to one another in this Valentine’s Day!

World Marriage Day

By Athalya Joseph

World Marriage Day is observed on the second Sunday of February, (the Sunday closest to Valentine’s Day.) The

Worldwide Marriage Encounter, created the holiday to celebrate the basic foundation of family—the relationship shared by husband and wife. The organization encourages couples to respect their partner and honor the sacrifices of

married life.

According to Archbishop Charles J. Chaput of Philadelphia, “Marriage, both as a natural institution and as a Christian Sacrament, is an irreplaceable good for society and all people.” This goes to show how marriage is what makes families and is the first step to bring people closer to God’s love. National Marriage Week is also an effort to reduce the divorce rate and promote the culture of marriage.

Most importantly, World Marriage Day is a tribute to couples everywhere, and a day to appreciate married life.
