On top of all that, he was the school’s newspaper editor and was Academic All-Conference for cross country. He enrolled in an online math class at the University of Illinois this year after exhausting the math curriculum at Geneva High School. He has taken 13 AP exams, many of those for classes Huntley High School doesn’t even offer, as well as some 300-level classes at Judson University. MARY BETH NOLAN/ [email protected] Stephen Dunbar, Geneva High School Stephen Dunbar of Geneva will attend Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. At Geneva High School, he was a three- year member of the varsity choir, and competed with the Worldwide Youth and Science in Engineering, speech and math teams. BRIAN HILL/ [email protected] Priya Deshpande, Huntley High School Priya Deshpande of Lake in the Hills plans to study biology at the Univer- sity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and go on to medical school. Julia Yurkovska, Crystal Lake South High School Julia Yurkovska of Lake in the Hills arrived in the United States with her family at age 7 with only five suitcases between them. More than 10 years later, she is graduating from Crystal Lake South near the top of her class and poised to pursue a career in forensic science. Christina Zima, Elgin High School Christina Zima of Elgin plans to pursue a business degree at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, with the eventual goal of becoming a lawyer. She has served as National Honor Society president, class officer and as a member of the Hanover Park Committee on Youth. The teenagers on these pages, both the winners and the honorable mentions, are some of the most dedicated and hard-working you are going to meet. They represent a generation preparing to take over — and if these students are any indicator, the future is in good hands. To be named to the Daily Herald Academic Team requires more than good grades, great test scores and impressive class rankings — although those are important factors. These kids see themselves as having responsibilities that go beyond their own personal success. They are goal-oriented, they are curious and they are confident. If you look at their short resumes, you’ll see that these teens all have stepped outside them- selves to be of service to others, and they believe that their future work will serve mankind. The nearly 100 public and private high schools in our readership area have produced another bumper crop of outstanding teenagers who are eager to get out there. We’re proud to introduce them to you.
