Lesson 1: Al-Fatihah - Al-Baqarah 1-141

PART-A

AL-FATIHAH

بركاته السالم عليكم ورحمة هللا و

Before we begin anything, it is necessary that we examine our hearts, we take a look into our hearts that

what is the state of my heart right now? What is it that I want from this effort of mine? What is it that I

have come for? Why have I come here? Why am I going to sit here? Why am I going to spend some

time reading the book of Allah? What is the reason? And whenever you have to ask yourself about your

intentions that what is your intention and you feel a little lost….

Tell yourself: والقلب متوجه الى هللا That: The heart is now going to be directed towards Allah سبحانه و تعالى.

It is facing its Lord, meaning Ya Allah! Now I am facing you. I am doing this for you. I am doing this

to attain your pleasure. I am doing this to draw closer and closer to you.

والقلب متوجه الى هللا ..…

So as we sit here, each and every single one of us, let us feel ourselves before the eyes of our lord….

Think my Lord is watching me right now…. As I sit here with His book…. my lord is watching me!!!

And hopefully, because I am thinking of Him ... I am remembering Him …. He is also making mention

of me. I remember Him in this gathering and hopefully my Lord is making mention of me in His

gathering of the Angels; that this servant of mine is sitting amongst others to remember me. This

thought …. This realization…. it should delight us…. it should make us happy.… it should make all our

fears and concerns and our worries go away because now I am here for my Lord! This is my time with

my Lord so all my worries, every things else, I can put it aside for now and Allah will take care of them.

Now before we begin فهم القرأن….. The question is what is فهم القرأن? Why this class is called فهم القرأن?

of تفسير basically means the understanding of the Quran. Remember; this is not going to be فهم القرأن

the Quran. We are not going to go into the detailed explanation of the Quran. Rather this is just a ‘ كرى ذ…. This is just a reminder…. Meaning as we read the meaning of the Quran, we go through the verses,

we go through the translation, the objective and the purpose is to remind ourselves.... So the objective

and the focus over here is كرى !!ذ

كرى كرى Reminder!!!… Who is in need of it? Who needs !!ذ .... ?ذ

كرى تنفع المؤمنين The reminder benefits the believers ..... فإن الذ

Meaning every single believer needs a reminder …. Which reminder? Of the words of Allah! Of Allah’s

message! Of His advice.... of His instructions!

So this ءهللاان شآ is going to benefit everybody; those who have already studied the entire Quran cover to

cover, those who are in this journey, and also those who are completely new to this journey. Because

every single believer can benefit from ‘ كرى .he can benefit from reminder ,ذ

So ءهللاان شآ we will be focusing on the major themes of the verses and the major lessons that we can

learn from the اتآي . We are not going to go into the detailed explanation; rather we are going to focus on

the lessons, on the themes and on the major points. And of course, when a person is coming for this

reason of reminding themselves, then we want to make the most of this effort. Correct?

How are we going to do that?? How are we going to ensure that as we remind ourselves the meaning of

the Quran, the messages that it contains?? How are we going to ensure that we are actually going to

benefit from them?? How are we going to ensure that we do not forget these reminders?? Write them

down!! So how many lesson you are going to write down? How many reflections are you going to

write down?? هللا ءان شآ we will begin a reflections activity also… however what I encourage you to do

is that from every juzz note down at least three action points. For every single juzz that you listen to …

هللا ءان شآ note down how many action points?... minimum three. So for example today we will learn.

Allah says:

.Say to the people good words .… وقولوا للناس حسنا

Now when you highlight that ayah, with your pink favorite highlighter, or maybe you draw a heart right

next to it, or maybe you write your reflection next to it…. What will happen? Very soon, as the book is

going to close, we are going to forget about it. So what I want you to do is make a separate Ramadan

journal … in which you record your Ramadan goals… Your Ramadan Duas… and for every juzz ءان شآ

how many points of actions? Minimum three action points!! Now it’s up to you how much you want هللا

but three is minimum! ان شاء هللا…..

Also remember that when a person learns the Quran, what does he develop? Essentially he develops the

love of Allah and the love of the Messenger ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص ..... because the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said that who so ever

wants to develop love of Allah and His messenger should read what is in the ‘مصحف’… He should read

what is in the Quran!!

So as we will review the Quran, we will come across many beautiful names and attributes of Allah

,So what I want you to do is that as you read through them, make a note of them .سبحانه و تعالى

highlight them and mark them, so that as you reopen your Quran at any point, what do you هللا ءان شآ

see?? The names of Allah سبحانه و تعالى!! His attributes!! And also notice the context in which the

names of Allah are mentioned.

We are هللا ءان شآ going to be studying one juzz a day; Why?? What’s the intention? What’s the goal?

What’s the purpose? What are we preparing for? THE MONTH OF RAMADAN!!!

Page 3: هتاكرب و الله ةمحرو مكيلع ملاسلاdata.alhudamedia.com/Media/Al-Quran/Fahm_al-Quran...The Quran is the book of Allah… The book of Allah that has been sent

منا تقبل ربنا Page 3

The month of Ramadan is the month of Quran. It is the time when we recite it, when we worship Allah

with it. It is the time when we act upon it also. All of this cannot be done effectively unless and until we

review and we refresh the meaning of the Quran. We may know it really well from before, but what

happens? After knowing also, we forget! So the purpose of this is ء هللاان شآ to remind ourselves so that

our Ramadan is spent in the best worship. Why best worship?? Because what do we want from Allah

this Ramadan?? What is your goal?? What are you seeking from Allah this Ramadan?? What do you

want from this Ramadan? Why are we preparing so much for this month? What’s the big deal? ….This

is the time of having our sins forgiven!!!

So ان شاء هللا for that we are definitely going to make دعا but we are also going to strive with our

actions!! We are going to put in some effort also, and for that we are going to remind ourselves of what

Allah tells us in the Quran what we should do so that we can change ourselves, because it is actions also

that bring about Allah’s forgiveness.

So with this, let’s begin:

Does everyone has the مصحف in front of them?? Translation of the Quran in front of them??

These words:

هللا ان بح س ….. Perfect is Allah

لل مد الح و ….. All praise and thanks is for Allah

There is no God worthy of worship but Allah .… هللال ا ه ل ا ل و

ركب ا هللا و …. And Allah is the greatest

يمظ الع لى الع ا هللا ب ل ا ة و ق ل و و ح ل و …. And there is no power and no might except with Allah, the

exalted, the great.

These words, the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلصsaid about them that saying these words is more beloved to me than

anything upon which the sun rises.

Meaning these words are more beloved to Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص than anything on this earth. All of its treasures

and its entire valuable combined, the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص loved the words of Allah’s praise more than anything

else.

With this we beg Allah, that O Allah! You also grant us the love of these words. Make us amongst

those who remember you happily, who read your book, your ‘ المك ’ willingly and whole heartedly.

The Quran is the book of Allah… The book of Allah that has been sent for the guidance of all mankind

… And in order to receive guidance from Quran, it is necessary that we reflect upon this book. Allah

says in the Quran:

?Will they not reflect on the Quran .… أفال يتدبرون القرآن

Meaning that, they should reflect on the Quran. What is preventing them? They must reflect on the

Quran so that they can increase in their guidance. And reflection upon the Quran is not something that is

difficult to do. It might seem like a daunting task; 1 juzz a day, but it is not something difficult to do,

because Allah has made the Quran Easy for guidance.

رنا القرآن ك ولقد يس رلذ …..Certainly we have made the Quran easy for remembrance.

And the fact is that why we should not reflect on the Quran, why should we not study it, why should we

not ponder upon its meanings when this Quran is that which guides us to the best way; to the most

correct way.

Allah says: ذا القرآن يهدي ـ للتي هي أقوم إن ه …..Indeed this Quran guides to that which is most

suitable….that which is most proper.

Meaning after reading and understanding the book of Allah you will find the most correct and best way

of living your life.

But not just that: ر المؤمنين .… And this [Quran also] gives good news to believers .... ويبش

Which believer?? الحات those who did righteous deeds… الذين يعملون الص

كبيراأن لهم أجرا ….then indeed for them, is the great reward.

Meaning those who act upon this book, those who learn this book and act upon it, then for them Allah

promises a Great a Great Reward!!!

Therefore studying this book and exerting any kind of effort for this purpose and bearing any form of

hardship in order to better understand the book of Allah … Any kind of effort for this book especially

with respect to reflecting upon it… All these efforts are in fact a means of acquiring “ ا كبيرااجر ” …

This is our effort to attain the great reward that Allah has promised to His Servants…. Therefore let us

sit here with this intention, with this goal, with this hope and this desire and دعا that Allah grants us

through this effort of ours “ ا نافعاعلم ”, beneficial knowledge …and then the ability to perform “ عمال

“ righteous deeds… so that w can attain ,”صالحا ا كبيرااجر ”, a great reward!!!

Allah سبحانه و تعالى sent us this book through His messenger, Muhammad ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص, and the Prophet of

Allah fulfilled his duty in delivering this message…

ذا القرآن لنذركم به ومن بلغ ـ ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص This Quran Allah has revealed to the Messenger .…وأوحي إلي ه

so that he may warn you thereby…. meaning us thereby.

And also whom so ever this Quran reaches .… meaning this Quran is a warning for all of mankind.…

and when this is a warning, this means that its messages must be taken seriously, its contents must be

taken seriously.

Let us therefore observe seriousness in the study of this book. Let us study this book with the fear of

Allah. This session is not for the purpose of amusement, it is not for the purpose of entertainment, it is

not for the purpose of amusing ourselves or something to laugh with, No!! This session is for the

purpose of spending some time with the book of Allah, and the book of Allah is indeed the ‘كالم’ of

Allah. It is indeed the speech of Allah, and we have to give it its ‘حق’. It is serious ‘كالم’ and we must

observe seriousness in listening to the book of Allah, in reading the book of Allah and in learning from

the book of Allah. Once we do learn it, then remember we also have the obligation of conveying this

message forward. We also have this obligation to convey its beautiful messages to the rest of the people

because Allah says:

ذا بالغ للناس ـ .This book is a notification, it is a clarification, and it’s a message for all people.… ه

Why??

…so that they may be warned through it … ولينذروا به

They may be informed about the impending doom… they may be warned about their result, about the

day of judgment, ……..

ذا بيان للناس ـ ..…Allah says: this Quran is a clarification for people… ه

ذا بصائر للناس ـ this is enlightenment for people…. This is what brings us out of darkness into… ه

light..…

ذا صراطي مستقيما ـ .…This Quran is that which guides us to the right way .... وأن ه

And those people who mould their lives according to this book, then this Quran testifies that it will

certainly be a means of guidance for them. It will certainly be a cure for them, a cure for their hearts….

..…this Quran is a guide and a cure for people who believe … قل هو للذين آمنوا هدى وشفاء

ورحمة للمؤمنين وننز من القرآن ما هو شفاء …. This Quran, we have revealed it as a cure and as a

mercy for the believers….

Page 6: هتاكرب و الله ةمحرو مكيلع ملاسلاdata.alhudamedia.com/Media/Al-Quran/Fahm_al-Quran...The Quran is the book of Allah… The book of Allah that has been sent

منا تقبل ربنا Page 6

And those people who approach this book with some other intension, who are not seeking guidance

from this book, who are not seeking the cure that this book offers, then this Quran; it does not become a

means of guidance for them.

Allah says:

ه .…Indeed those people who do not believe in the verses of Allah .… إن الذين ل يؤمنون بآيات اللـ

ه .Allah does not guide them .… ل يهديهم اللـ

Even if the Quran comes before them, they do not receive guidance from the Quran.

.…And for them is a painful punishment .… ولهم عذاب أليم

So those who leave the book of Allah, and those who try to attain guidance from something other than

the book of Allah, they shall never ever attain guidance.

ه .…They shall never be rightly guided .… ل يهديهم اللـ

We are all in need of guidance, we are all in need of instructions, and we are all in need of direction to

the way of Allah’s pleasure!! And this direction, this guidance, can only be found in that which has

come from Allah!!! In the book of Allah!!! And those who leave this book:

.… And for them is a painful punishment .… ولهم عذاب أليم

And the messenger ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص will also testify against those who abandon the book:

سو ذا إن قومي اتخذوا … O my Lord… يا رب …and the messenger will complain … وقا الر ـ ه

مهجورا القرآن …. Indeed my people abandoned this Quran.

May Allah make us of those who are “ قرأنال هل ا ”, not of those who are “ جرالقرأناه ” … who leave the

Quran.

So with this intention and goal, let’s begin the Quran with surah-Al Fatihah:

SURAH-AL FATIHAH

TILAWAT

The Messenger of Allah ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said: “Allah has not revealed in the Taurah nor in the Injeel any Surah like

“The mother of the book” … like ابت الك م ا … which is Surah tul Fatiha and that is “the seven oft repeated

verses”… (Meaning those verses which are repeated over and over again)

Page 7: هتاكرب و الله ةمحرو مكيلع ملاسلاdata.alhudamedia.com/Media/Al-Quran/Fahm_al-Quran...The Quran is the book of Allah… The book of Allah that has been sent

JUZZ # 1 2015 فهم القرأن

منا تقبل ربنا Page 7

There is no Surah like this in the entire Taurat … in the entire Injeel…. And Allah says that this Surah

is divided between Myself and My servant. And My servant shall have what he asks for because this

Surah is a دعا; it is a prayer, in which we pray to Allah while we praise Him, we glorify Him, we also

make دعا to Allah… We also ask Him for guidance. And this surah is the best Surah, it is the most

superior portion of the Quran!!

Once the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص was on a journey when a man came to him and he said that the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص

turned towards him and said: “Should I not inform you of the best part of Quran?” The ‘افضل; the most

superior portion of the Quran?... and He recited Surah- Al-Fatihah to him.

So Surah-Aul Fatihah is the best portion of the Quran and this is why we recite this سورة in every ركعة

of every prayer…. without the recitation of this ةوصل ;سورة is invalid!!

What is the meaning of this سورة; Let us understand, Let us review, and Let us refresh its meaning and

its message. Let us reflect on it so that we can also improve our prayers and perform them with

excellence.

مي ج الر ان ط ي الش ن م الل ب ذ و ع ا

I seek refuge with Allah… I seek His protection against the Shaitan, who is the accursed.

Let us give ourselves in Allah’s protection… Why??? Because when a person goes in the way of Allah,

then شيطا ن attacks him most at that time. Therefore, seek refuge with Allah. Not just me, you as well!

Say: مي ج الر ان ط ي الش ن م الل ب ذ و ع ا

O Allah! We give ourselves in your protection. Save us from شيطا ن, from all of the شياطين, whether

they are from among men or among Jinn, whoever they may be, whatever they may be…. Those who

stop me from your book! Anyone who stops me from coming closer to you! From reflecting on your

book!.. Those who create obstacles for me in this cause and make me think that this cause is

unimportant, that reflecting on the book of Allah is something that is unnecessary… We surrender

ourselves; we give ourselves in Allah’s protection that Allah protects us from them.

حيم ن الر ـ حم ه الر بسم اللـ

In the name of Allah the entirely Merciful , the especially Merciful.

It is Allah’s mercy that He revealed this book on us.

ن ـ حم … الر القرآن علم … The most Merciful who taught the Quran

Allah is the most Merciful and His mercy is ever manifesting around us. Any wherever you see, you see

the sign of His mercy. But His greatest mercy is revealed through this Quran. Allah has shown mercy

to us at this moment that He has given us the ability to sit with His book, that He has yet again joined us

Page 8: هتاكرب و الله ةمحرو مكيلع ملاسلاdata.alhudamedia.com/Media/Al-Quran/Fahm_al-Quran...The Quran is the book of Allah… The book of Allah that has been sent

with His book despite of our short comings, despite of our sins, He has honored us with His book that

right now we sit before His book in order to read it, in order to understand it.

Therefore:

ه رب العالمين .1 .All praise is due to Allah, who is the Lord of the worlds.… الحمد للـ

Ultimate, absolute praise is for Him, for Allah not for anyone else! Not for me, not for you, not for any

King of this world or anyone else, not for the glitters of this world; the things that we are impressed

with, the things we are in love with, the things that occupy our hearts.… No…. praise is for the

maker…. Praise is for the creator of all of this …

The رب .… The Lord of all the worlds.… the Lord of us all.... Those who believe in Him and also those

who do not believe in Him but He is especially the Lord; the nourisher of those who do believe in Him,

because He provides them with ايمان, He provides them with beneficial knowledge, He provides them

with the opportunity to do righteous deeds, He provides them with His recognition, With His nearness.

He is the Lord, the nourisher, who has given us this book for the nourishment of our Hearts.

حيم .2 ن الر ـ حم ,The entirely Merciful, the especially Merciful, repeatedly Merciful.… الر

eternally Merciful!

Again His mercy is mentioned!

A man once came to Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص with his child and he began to hug his child, he began to show his

love to his child and the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said: “Do you show mercy toward him?”

The man said: Yes!

The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said: “Allah is more merciful towards you than you are towards this child”; For Allah

is “ حيم ن الر ـ حم .the Most Merciful of those who show mercy ,”الر

ين .3 .…Sovereign of the day of recompense, the Day of Judgment.… مالك يوم الد

When He will hold the earth and roll up the skies in His hand and will say:

“ كل م الا ن ا ” I am the king.

“ رضال وك ل م ين ا ” where are the kings of the earth?...

He is the كال م , the king, the Master, the sovereign of that day!

In this Surah, surah-Al fatihah, we are taught the etiquette of making دعا. We are taught how we should

ask Allah: The first step is to praise Allah.

Once a man came to the مسجد, he performed the ةوصل and then he made دعا. When he made دعا, he said:

O Allah! Forgive me and have mercy on me. The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:

Page 9: هتاكرب و الله ةمحرو مكيلع ملاسلاdata.alhudamedia.com/Media/Al-Quran/Fahm_al-Quran...The Quran is the book of Allah… The book of Allah that has been sent

JUZZ # 1 2015 فهم القرأن

منا تقبل ربنا Page 9

“O worshipper! You have rushed, you have been hasty.

When you perform ة وصل and then sit, then first praise Allah with that which He is deserving of,

then send ةوصل upon me, and then call upon Allah.”

So here in Surah-Al Fatiha, we are taught; first we praise Allah. We praise Him with His names, with

His attributes, with His grandness…. Then we ask Him, we beg Him:

O Allah it is you who we worship and you alone we ask for .… إياك نعبد وإياك نستعين .4

help.

We are your servants O Allah! And for your worship يا هللا! We need your help; we cannot fast without

your help, we cannot speak the truth without your help, we cannot stand in prayer without your help.

you alone we worship…. you alone we desire to worship... But you alone ….. Your help ….إياك نعبد

it is that we need.

Therefore:

راط المستقيم .5 ……Guide us to the straight path ..… اهدنا الص

The reality is that until a person does not find the right guidance, he is in extreme danger, because if he

goes along on the path of misguidance then the end is very ugly. Because the Day of Judgment is not an

ordinary day, it is a very hard, a very difficult day. It is the day of account; the day of “حساب”, the day

of recompense! In order to be successful that day it is essential that a person knows now that what is

right what is wrong. It is essential that a person be able to differentiate now between what is good and

what is bad. This is why the most important دعا is the دعا of guidance, the دعا that Allah teaches us

here in the very own opening of book:

راط المستقيم Oh Allah! Guide us to the right path… so that ultimately we can be …… اهدنا الص

successful.

What kind of a day is the Day of Judgment?

Abdullah bin Unais reported that I heard that Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص saying that:

“Allah will gather His slaves unclothed, uncircumcised, ‘bohman’” ….

The companions asked: what is meant by ‘Bohm’? Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلصsaid:

“They will have nothing with them.”

Meaning people will come on that day empty handed. They will be called by a voice that is heard from

a far saying: “I am the King”. None of the people of جنة will enter جنة while any of the people of the fire

Page 10: هتاكرب و الله ةمحرو مكيلع ملاسلاdata.alhudamedia.com/Media/Al-Quran/Fahm_al-Quran...The Quran is the book of Allah… The book of Allah that has been sent

are seeking him for some injustice that he did to him. And none of the people of fire will enter the fire

while any of the people of جنة are seeking him for an injustice that he did to him.

In another version we learn Allah will say: I will avenge him for a slap even.

Meaning if a person slapped another then justice will take place on that day. The people asked the

Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص: How will that be when we will come to Allah naked, unclothed, boham (empty handed)?

How will we make up that day? How will we pay each other of that day?

The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said: “This applies to good actions and evil actions”;

Meaning that day, justice will be established through the deeds that the people have brought.

So any person whom we have wronged in any way, whether they know or they don’t know, we must

seek their forgiveness because until this revenge is established a person is not getting to his destination.

Many times we take these matters lightly and we think that everything will be fine on the Day of

Judgment. No!! We must make amends over here or we get ready to give up the hard earned good deeds

on that day. Think before wronging any person… Think!!! And if it has been done already, then seek

their forgiveness. This is why it is essential to know; what is permissible and what is impermissible.

What is it that Allah allows and what is it that He does not allow. What is beneficial, what is harmful.

And this is why we ask Allah:

راط المستقيم .…Guide us to the right way ..… اهدنا الص

And the right way; where is it found? In the book of Allah! And this is why we are here.

..…The path of those upon whom you have bestowed favor.… صراط الذين أنعمت عليهم .6

Who are they? The Prophets! The truthful! The righteous! The martyrs!

الين ..…Not of those who have evoked your anger .…غير المغضوب عليهم ول الض

Oh Allah! We do not want the way of those people with whom you are angry,

….nor of those who went astray.

This is our دعا to Allah that Allah Grant us guidance, keep us firm upon guidance until our very last

breath…

And after this Surah, after this دعا; Surah-Al Baqarah.

The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said: Recite Surah tul Baqarah, read Surah tul Baqarah, for reciting it is a blessing and

leaving it is a cause of grief, and the magicians cannot counter it. This is a surah that chases شياطين away.

The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said;

“Do not turn your houses into graveyards.

”.runs away from the house in which Surah tul Baqarah is recited شيطان

So let us see what this surah says! The surah whose recitation is a means of blessing and whose

abandoning is the cause of grief, what is this surah!

ه بسم ن اللـ ـ حم حيم الر الر

الم .1

لك .2 للمتقين هدى فيه ريب ل الكتاب ذ

.This is the book about which there is no doubt, guidance for those conscious of Allah ! الم

Who are the متقين? They are those who refrain from sin, who perform the obligations and who protect

themselves from being punished in the hereafter. The fact is that ىتقو is the foundation of every good

deed.

A man came to Abu Saeed ul Khudari and he said; advice me. He said; I asked the same question from

Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص and He said to me:

رأس كل شئ ه ، فإن هللا أوصيك بتقوى .... I advice you of the ىتقو of Allah for it is the head of

everything.

ىتقو is the root of every good deed. Every deed that is performed with Allah in mind....

While the heart is directed to Allah, is paying attention to Allah, then that..… والقلب متوجه الى هللا

deed will be counted as “عمل صالح”…as a Righteous deed … because it is not possible that a person

fears Allah, he remembers Allah, and then he does wrong. And if he does end up making a mistake, the

fear of Allah will cause him to repent. It will make him go back on track.

ىتقو ; what is it? It is to walk carefully. It is to tread carefully in this life. So those who fear Allah

.those who desire guidance, then Allah has revealed this book for them, for their benefit ,(متقين)

Who are they?

ا رزقناهم ينفقون الذين يؤمنون بالغيب .3 الة ومم ويقيمون الص They are those who believe in the unseen, who establish prayer and spend out of what we have

given them.

Whatever they have been given, they don’t consider it to be just for themselves. They are not stingy with

the gifts that Allah has given them rather they share those gifts whether it is money, food, a good

thought, knowledge, whatever Allah has given them, they give to others and when they give, then what

they have does not reduce in fact Allah gives them even more because of that they have given to the

servants of Allah.

The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said: A slave shall not believe until he believes in four matters;

the testimony of هللال ا ه ل ا ل ,

and that سو هللا د الر ;Whom Allah has sent with the truth ,محم

and that a servant must believe in death, in the certainty of death and he believes in the

resurrection after death

And he believes in القدر… in divine decree.

Now if you look at all of these aspects, they are all part of الغيب, they are all part of the unseen world.

The person who truly has ىتقو is this one; the one who believes in the realities of the unseen world. In

the reality of Allah!! His messenger!! The Day of Judgment!! القدر !!نار !!جنة!!And this is the person

who will work in this life with the ‘آخرة’ in his mind.

والذين يؤمنون بما أنز إليك وما أنز من قبلك وباآلخرة هم يوقنون .4They are those who believe in what has been revealed to you (in the Quran), and what has been

revealed before you (all of the previous scriptures), and of the hereafter.

They are certain in faith; they have the ‘آخرة’ in mind!

ئك على .5 ـ بهم أول ن ر هدى م …..Those are upon right guidance from their Lord….

ئك هم المفلحون ـ .and it is those who shall be successful..… وأول

These people are successful… these people are rightly guided. On the other hand;

كفروا إن الذين .6 ….Indeed those people who disbelieve, it is all the same for them whether

you warn them or do not warn them, they will not believe.

Some people are soft hearted they fear Allah; Allah’s guidance is for them. There are other people who

are hard in their hearts, their hearts are not absorbent rather their hearts are repellent; their hearts are

impermeable. They hear the truth, they see it, they read it, they know it, they recognize it, yet they do

not accept it. Such people, no matter how much they are warned about the hereafter, no matter how

much they are warned about Allah, their hearts remain unaffected. Why? Because they are not seekers

of guidance! When they reject guidance then they are also rejected... So much so that;

7. Allah has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their vision is a veil and

for them is a great punishment.

They do not see, they do not understand, even if the truth is bare before them, obvious before them, they

do not understand. For such people is a great punishment.

Then there is another category of people; the hypocrites. Some people, they are believers, inside and

outside, in their heart is faith and on the outside is ‘عمل صالح’, they also show faith.

There are other people who are disbelievers on the inside and on the outside; there is ‘كفر’ inside and

.outside ’كفر‘

And then there is a third category of people; who are disbelievers inside but they pretend to be believers

on the outside. They show that they have ايمان, but in their hearts there is no portion of ايمان. Due to this

discrepancy their words do not match their deeds. What they say contradicts their hearts.

.…And Among people are some who say (meaning they say with their mouths)…ومن الناس .8

ه وباليوم اآلخر آمنا باللـ ….that we believe in Allah and the last day….. but Allah says

.But they are not believers ..… وما هم بمؤمنين

They say we believe but Allah doesn’t accept their claim of faith.

ه والذين آمنوا .9 …They try to deceive Allah and those who believe .… يخادعون اللـ

Because they lie, there is contradiction of heart and tongue…. Because in the heart, there is zero faith

but on the tongue a person says that he has faith. This lie, this contradiction, what is this? It is deception!

They are trying to deceive Allah. They are trying to deceive believers. In their hearts, they don’t really

believe in Allah, they don’t really believe in the last day, but they say they do! Allah says:

….they do not deceive except themselves and they perceive it not…..

This is where we need to reflect on ourselves. We need to take a look into our hearts; has the ultimate

truth settled in my heart? The ultimate truth that Allah exists with His attributes! That He is the one

who is causing everything to happen, and that one day I shall return to Him; on a day, when I have to

answer for what I have done. When no deed of mine, small or big, shall remain hidden! …Do I really

Page 14: هتاكرب و الله ةمحرو مكيلع ملاسلاdata.alhudamedia.com/Media/Al-Quran/Fahm_al-Quran...The Quran is the book of Allah… The book of Allah that has been sent

believe in this? And if I say that I do .… then do I really act accordingly?? Does my life show that I

believe in an all-Seeing, all-Knowing and all-Hearing God?? Do my actions testify that I am a worker

who will be called to account?? ….I am a servant who is striving to his Master??... Does my life testify

to this?? ….Or is it that our tongues just say big words; I believe in Allah, I love Allah…. Is it just that it

is a lip service and ‘ايمان’ has not really entered the hearts?

Hypocrisy cannot be removed from the heart until ‘ايمان’ settles in the heart.… What we say, we really

mean to say it, we really mean it from our heart. If that is not the case, then whatever a person says; “I

believe, I love, I follow”….then whatever he says is merely words. It is just to satisfy people. This is

deception. This kind of lip service is not acceptable to Allah سبحانه و تعالى.

.they do not even realize …… وما يشعرون

They do not even realize that they are deceiving themselves! This is also a sign of hypocrisy that a

person do not see, he does not notice, he does not recognize his own mistakes. And even if he does, he

does not admit them. He does not acknowledge them. And when he does not acknowledge them, he

does not rectify himself.

…. In their hearts is a disease…. 10. في قلوبهم مرض

They do not think rationally, why? Because their hearts are diseased!! Diseased with what? With the

love of this world! Their priorities are different, they don’t fear Allah; they don’t worry for the ‘آخرة’. Their hearts are hollow. Their hearts are sick. And if the heart is sick, then how can one ever be in good

health?

In their hearts is a disease…. ه مرضا …So Allah has increased their disease .… فزادهم اللـ

Why?

Because when a disease is left uncured than it gets worse overtime.

…. And for them is a painful punishment, because they used to lie…. and this is why for them is a

painful punishment!

What is the lie that they said? In their heart is one thing but on their tongue is something else…. the

reality is one thing and what they say is something else. Remember; lying is one of the biggest signs of

hypocrisy.

Abu Bakr (r.a.) said: O people! Beware of lying, for indeed lying is not from ‘ايمان’.

Meaning where there is ايمان, then that person does not lie. The person in whose heart is ‘ايمان’, then the

tongue of that person can’t lie.

The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said: “Whoever has these three traits is a hypocrite even if he fasts, even if he prays,

even if he does حج and عمره and he says that he is a Muslim:

When he speaks, he lies.

When he makes a promise, he breaks it.

When he is entrusted with an ‘امانة’, he betrays.

All these three traits are different shades of lying, false promises, exaggerations, false claims of love,

false claims of friendship, false praise... All of these are lies and they must be removed from our lives....

honesty and truthfulness is what we need to adopt; that before we say something, we check is it true or it

is not true, otherwise good deeds will be wasted because the ones who lies habitually is a hypocrite. As

prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said even if he prays, even if he performs hajj, even if he fasts, because of his lying, all of

his good deeds will go wasted.

Ayesha (r.a.) said: there was no trait more hated to the Messenger of Allah ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص than lying.

This is something that the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلصdespised, he hated it so much so that a man would lie before

him, and the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص’s conduct with him would remain changed until it would become known that

that person has repented. And when that person had repented for his lie than the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص’s conduct

will improve with him.

So here again we need to check ourselves; where, what are those moments, what are those times, what

are those places, what are those situations in which we end up lying?... why do we lie? …out of fear of

people! To please them! To satisfy them! To look good in front of their eyes! In order to pretend what

we are not!!

But what is the outcome of this?… عذاب أليم; a painful punishment!!

The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:

“There will come to the people years of treachery, when the liar will be regarded as honest and the

honest man will be regarded as liar.”

A time will come when honesty will be considered lying, but for this is a painful punishment. So no

matter how common lying becomes a believer does not lie, why? Because he remembers that lying

brings: عذاب أليم; a painful punishment!

What is that painful punishment?

The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said that:

“Indeed ‘حميم’; boiling hot water will be poured over their heads. The حميمwill penetrate until it finds

its way to the insides of that person. Then whatever is inside will fall out under the pores over his feet

while it melts away. Then he will be reformed to how he was and the punishment shall be repeated.”

! عذاب أليم

The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:

“In hell there are snakes with long rising necks whose one bite would cause one to feel the poison for 40

years. In hell, there are scorpions like mules, huge scorpions whose one sting would cause one to feel

the poison for 40 years.”

This is why this is no simple matter. No matter what, lies must be eliminated from our lives. What will

happen if we are embarrassed because of truth, so what if someone will get upset, no matter what it is, it

cannot be worse than عذاب أليم.

The منافقون; Allah says about them:

11. When it is said to them do not cause corruption on the earth, they say we are but reformers.

They called their corruption reform, in reality they are causing harm but they think that they are bringing

benefit.

12. Unquestionably it is they who are the corrupters, but they perceive it not.

Why don’t they perceive that their actions are destructive? Their actions are not causing reforms, rather

their actions are causing destruction, Why do they not realize it? Because the heart is sick, the heart is

blind, so they don’t understand.

13. When it is said to them believe as the people have believed (Meaning like sahabas), they say

should we believe as the foolish have believed?....

The sahaba were foolish to them, why? Because the sahaba didn’t lie, they spoke the truth! Just like

today, if a person speaks the truth, adheres to truth, he is considered foolish. Allah says:

.… Unquestionably it is they who are the foolish but they know it not.

14. And when they meet those who believe, they say we believe, but when they are alone with

their evil ones, they say indeed we are with you, we were only mockers.

Where ever they go, they become like the people who are around them but they show loyalty to those

who are like them, to their own likes, to their leaders!

Allah says:

ه يستهزئ بهم .15 Allah mocks them and prolongs them in their transgression while .…اللـ

they wander blindly.

The منافقون (hypocrites) are happy with the immediate results of their treachery, of their deceit, of their

lying, of their cheating and they think they are very intelligent when they have lied but in reality they are

only preparing more fuel for themselves in the fire of hell but they do not realize this. They do not

realize their foolishness, they do not realize their wrongs and they keep running and rushing in wrong

ways.

اللة بالهدى .16 ئك الذين اشتروا الض ـ Those are the ones who have purchased error in .…أول

exchange for guidance….

They have given up guidance; they have taken misguidance so:

…. Their transgression has brought them no profit, ultimately nor were they guided.

17. There example is that of one who kindled a fire but when it illuminated what was around

him, Allah took away their light and left them in darkness so they could not see.

They are deaf, dumb and blind so they will not return to.… صم بكم عمي فهم ل يرجعون .18

the right path.

When there is light we can see what things really are. When the light of Quran; the نور of ‘هداية’, the

light of guidance; it shines, we begin to see our faults, we begin to see our errors. But the example of

hypocrites is given over here that those who do not wish to follow the truth, those who do not wish to

mold themselves according to truth, rather they want that the truth should be molded according to their

desires, then what happens is even if they are surrounded by lights, even if they are surrounded by

guidance, even if they are surrounded by sound knowledge, they do not benefit from that guidance even

in the least… Why? Because:

ه بنورهم .…Allah has taken their light away.… ذهب اللـ

They become blind, they do not see their own faults, so they don’t get benefit from this guidance in the

least. Why? Because when they do not recognize their mistakes, they do not repent, they do not reform,

they do not leave their sins rather they become deaf and blind to guidance.

So here we make دعا to Allah that “O Allah! As we journey through Quran, give us the ability to

recognize our mistakes, admit them, acknowledge them and beg your forgiveness and show us the way

out of them into light, into better ways, ways that you like”.

ن السماء .19 Or their example is like that of a rain storm from sky within.… أو كصيب م

which is darkness, thunder and lightening. And when they are in the storm they put their fingers

in their ears against the thunder claps in dread of death ( they become afraid), but Allah is

Encompassing of the disbelievers.

Meaning even if they close their ears they cannot avoid the truth.

Page 18: هتاكرب و الله ةمحرو مكيلع ملاسلاdata.alhudamedia.com/Media/Al-Quran/Fahm_al-Quran...The Quran is the book of Allah… The book of Allah that has been sent

20. The lightening almost snatches away their sight. Every time it light the way for them, they

walk there in it but when darkness comes over them, they stand still. And if Allah had willed, He

could have taken away their hearing and their sight, Indeed Allah is over all things competent.

Some other people, what happens to them? They do not change themselves despite seeing the light of

guidance around them. Why do they not change themselves even if they recognize their mistakes?

Even if they learn about the right way, the truth, why is it that they do not change themselves? Why?

Because they are afraid of accepting this ‘دين’! They are afraid to follow this religion! They are afraid

of people! They are afraid of losing worldly benefits! They only do what is easy; when there is light

they walk, but when there is darkness they stand still. When there is difficulty, they stop. Whenever

,is easy, something is easy to do, they do it but as soon as something became difficult, challenging ’دين‘

they stop right away. They stop. They do not go forward.

If Allah wants, He can take guidance away from them completely, but He has given time, a chance to go

either way. Perhaps they will turn to Allah in complete surrender.

Then Allah addresses all of mankind because this Quran is for all people, it addresses all people:

Worship your Lord! Your Lord who .… اعبدوا ربكم !O’ people.… يا أي ها الناس .21

created you and who also created those before you….. (Why should you worship Him?) ….that you

may become righteous and you may be saved from a bad outcome.

The Lord who created you, who has given you all of these blessing that you enjoy, the Lord whom you

have to return to, and the one who will see what you have done, what you have been doing all your life,

you are answerable to Him. He made us; we are going back to Him, so why not worship Him when He

is our creator. If we have not lived according to His directives then what will happen when we will

return to Him? If we have not worshiped Him in this life then what will happen when we face our Lord

after our death on the Day of Judgment? We will be in great trouble. So he who wishes to be safe there,

for eternity, must surrender to his Lord now. The freedom in this life is temporary and for a test. What

will you choose? Will you choose to worship our Lord or will we choose to worship others or our

desires or something other from His creations.

Recognize your Lord O people! Who is your Lord? ….

22. HE is the one who has made for you the earth a bed spread out and the sky a ceiling and

sometimes[send down] from the sky rain, and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you, so

do not attribute to Allah equals while you know that there is no one similar to Him….

You know that He alone has created you and everything else. He alone governs the affairs of the entire

creations, so when that is the reality than why would you associate any partner with Him? So O people!

Do not do شرك; do not give any one the importance that Allah alone deserves. Do not love anybody the

way Allah should be loved. Do not rely on anyone as Allah should be relied upon. Hope, trust, توكل, repentance, all of this is for Allah alone.

ه رب العالمين ..… إن صالتي ونسكي ومحياي ومماتي للـ

My prayer, my sacrifice my life my death everything is for Allah....

And this is ‘عبادة’; this is worship.

To do عبادة, to worship Allah, we need to look at this Quran. What does this Quran tells us? So if a

person has any doubts about the Quran, Allah says:

23. If you have any doubt about what we have given to our servant (meaning this Quran) than

produce one سورة the like there of ….

This is an eternal challenge! This is the book of Allah, here is the truth. The reality is that no one has

ever been able to produce anything like the Quran, anything that matches the level of the Quran,

anything that is similar to it. Allah says:

….For this purpose you may even call upon your witnesses other than Allah….

Call all of the academics, all of the researchers, all of the best orators and authors of this world, all of the

best poets, the first and the last, the jinn and the men, call upon them;

.if you should be truthful .… ”إن كنتم صادقين“

24. But if you do not do, and you will never be able to do.…

You will never be able to produce anything like the Quran. If you don’t believe on it, if you don’t

follow it and you don’t worship your Lord Than:

.…Fear the fire whose fuel is men and stones prepared for those who disbelieve.

This is a message for everyone; All those who find the Quran problematic, All those who reject the very

existence of God, this ayah is a challenge to them. Look at this Quran and compare it with other any

book, does anything even come close to the brevity, eloquence, the power, the effect, the content, the

style of the book of Allah??? NO!! There is nothing!! Absolutely nothing!! Therefore study this book,

read this book and know your Lord. If you want guidance, read this book and if you are in doubt, then

remove that doubt.

25. And give good news to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens

in paradise beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with the provision of fruits

there from they would say this is what we were provided with before.…

Meaning in جنة, People will be given familiar food.

thirst, there is no illness, there is no disease, no discomfort, no pain, no affliction, no distress!! That is

THE LIFE! The real home for which we have to strive NOW!

But those who don’t believe, who find faults in Quran, who criticize the style of the Quran, the content

of the Quran, Allah responds to them:

26. Indeed Allah is not shy, He is not timid to present an example that of a mosquito or what is

even smaller than that ….

A mosquito or something smaller than that, looks insignificant because of our ignorance whereas the

fact is that every creature, even if it’s very small, as small as a mosquito, or even smaller than that is

indeed an intricate creature that just comes in the dark and draws blood out without even us knowing it

… Allah doesn’t feel shy to present the example of something that is even this small.

.…And those who have believed know that it is the truth from their Lord. But as for those who

disbelieve, they say, "What did Allah intend by this as an example?" (They criticize, they object)

Allah sends astray many thereby and guides many thereby. And He sends astray non but the

defiantly disobedient…. وما يضل به إل الفاسقين

Who are the disobedient? The defiantly disobedient, who are not guided by this Quran, who are they?

27. They are those who break the covenant of Allah after contracting it and separate that which

Allah has ordered to be joined and they cause corruption on earth; it is those who are the losers.

Who is فاسق ?فاسق is the one who breaks his promise with Allah. What is that promise which every

single one of us has made with Allah? هللال ا له ا ل … There is no God worthy of worship but Allah. So

if we say the كلمه and don’t live it, or if we say the كلمه and don’t act according to it, then this is our

breaking promise with Allah. This is فسق! This is disobedience!

And فاسق is the one who does not maintain good relations with the people. Allah has ordered that

relations must be joined; فاسق is the one who cuts off these relations. Our دين is about giving the rights

of Allah and giving the rights of the creation.

28. How can you disbelieve in Allah…. ه ..… كيف تكفرون باللـ

Now the origin of mankind is mentioned. Where did we come from? How did Allah honor us? Why are

we here? Who is our enemy?

…..The angels said: “will you place upon the earth one who will cause corruption therein and shed

blood?”…..

Because he will have free will, he will have freedom, and if he has freedom he will cause chaos.

remember these words, they are the nourishment of the angels. And the best, the most beloved speech

that Allah has chosen for His angels is همد ح ب و ان بح س هللا . Everybody say quietly yourself:

سبحان هللا وبحمده

This is the best speech; the best speech that Allah has chosen for His servants, for His angels. The angels

said: O Allah! We already glorify you; we already praise you, why would you create another creation?

Why would you create mankind, human beings? Allah said:

….Indeed I know that which you do not know.

31. And He taught Adam the names - all of them. Then He showed them to the angels and said,

"Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful".

33. He said, "O Adam, inform them of their names." And when he had informed them of their

names, He said, "Did I not tell you that I know the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth?

And I know what you reveal and what you have concealed."

Adam, his rank over the angels was due to the علمthat Allah gave him. What made Adam superior to the

angels was the knowledge that Allah blessed him with. Therefore let us give the most importance in our

lives to what ? to this knowledge, the knowledge that has come from Allah, this is what we should strive

to have more and more of because this is a source of honor and when Allah has blessed us with this

knowledge then we must use it. So when Allah has informed us about the best speech near Him; وبحمده

if Allah did not tell us how could we have figured out. So now when He has told us through ,سبحان هللا

His messenger ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص, than let’s frequently do His تسبيح.

34. And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate before Adam"; so they prostrated,

except for ابليس. He refused and was arrogant and became of the disbelievers.

The angels humbled themselves, ابليس did not; Is there a difference? Yes there is! One person humbles

himself and the other does not humble himself, one prays and the other does not pray, one obeys Allah

and the other does not obey Allah; is there a difference? Yes there is a difference!

What is the reason for this refusal? Arrogance!! أبى واستكبر; he refused and he was arrogant!!

35. And We said, "O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat there from in [ease

and] abundance from wherever you will. But do not approach this tree, lest you be among the

wrongdoers."

36. But شيطان caused them to slip out of it and removed them from that [condition] in which they

had been. And We said, "Go down, [all of you], as enemies to one another, and you will have upon

the earth a place of settlement and provision for a time."

And like this man came to earth.

of that forgetfulness he disobeyed his Lord. When he disobeyed his Lord, his Lord was angry with him

and the way to remove that anger wasتوبه ; repentance.

The fact is that we all make mistakes. We learn but we forget. When we forget, we make mistakes and

one of our goals this month of Ramadan is to attain Allah’s forgiveness. So for that we're going to make

we're going to exert our effort to ensure that we earn His forgiveness. And part of that effort is ,دعا

going to be to say the same words that Adam عليه السالم said, and What did he say? What are the words

that Allah taught him?

ربنا ظلمنا أنفسنا وإن لم تغفر لنا وترحمنا ل نكونن من الخاسرين

The words also that Yonus عليه السالم said:

ه إل أنت سبحانك إني كنت من الظالمين ـ There is no God but you Allah! You are perfect. I am.… ل إل

wrong, you are a perfect! I am wrong, it's my fault. So O Allah! Forgive me.

38. We We said, "Go down from it, all of you. And when guidance comes to you from Me,

whoever follows My guidance - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.

Fear free, grief free; are who? Those people will who follow Allah’s guidance. They shall be free of

fear, free of grief forever and ever.

بوا بآياتنا .39 And those who disbelieve and deny our signs, those will be.… والذين كفروا وكذ

the companions of the fire. They will abide there in eternally.

Now in the following آيات, the بنى اسرائيل are addressed. Who are the بنى اسرائيل? The Bani Israel was

the ة ة before the Muslim امه the nation that was gifted with many prophets, many scriptures, many ;امه

miracles, many gifts. Allah gave them preference in every way but they took all of the favors of Allah

for granted. They took it for granted and so their deeds and their beliefs became corrupted over time.

They thought we are the best so it does not matter what we do, it does not matter what we say, it does

not matter how we deal with others because hell is for others and Paradise is for us. It was this pride of

theirs that led to the corruption of their beliefs, the corruption of their deeds, the corruption of their

words.

So before Allah addresses the Muslim ة Allah ; يا أي ها الذين آمنو :in the Quran, before Allah says امه

addresses the previous ة then Allah ,يا أي ها الناس ;First, if you notice Allah addresses all of mankind .امه

addresses the previous ة Allah invites them to believe in the messenger who has come for their reform ;امه

so that they should follow him. Why? So that they should be honored in this دنيا and the آخرة. And as

we study these آيات, let us reflect on these آيات and reflect on ourselves because their errors, their

mistakes are mentioned so that we may refrain from going on the same path. Allah says:

Remember my favor which I...... اذكروا نعمتي ....!O children of Isreal .…يا بني إسرائيل .40

Be afraid of only Allah because the fear of Allah keeps one on the right path.

41. And believe in what I have sent down….

Believe in what I've sent down meaning in Quran

…. confirming that which is already with you….

So now all of mankind, all people have to believe in this Quran for their salvation because of the

previous nation, the امهة that was before the Muslim ة if they are told here; Believe in the Quran, then ,امه

what about the rest of humanity? Everybody needs to believe in the Quran in order to attain success.

Don't knowingly change the دين, alter the religion, to suit your desires because the truth is the truth even

43. Establish prayer, give وةزك and bow with those who bow down.

….in worship, in obedience!! Participate in collective works of ‘خير’.

44. Do you order righteousness to the people and forget yourselves while you recite the

scripture….

You read the scripture, you know the scripture and still your life contradicts it? Why does this happen

that when a person knows what the book of Allah says yet he does not conform to it, yet his actions

contradict the book of Allah? Why does this happen? When does this happen? When a person becomes

greedy for worldly benefits! When he forgets the ‘آخرة’, then what happens? Then عمل on the book,

then عمل on the truth, acting according to the truth becomes difficult.

.will you not reason .… أفال تعقلون ….

Will you not reason?..... What’s the advice that Allah gives? And this is something that we need to pay

attention to also that any time we find that our actions do not match our knowledge then what is it that

we should do?

الة .45 بر والص ….seek help through patience, through prayer .… واستعينوا بالص

Be patient, be firm. Try, try again. Work hard and seek Allah’s help through prayer also. Incline even

more towards Allah so for example; if there is a particular command in the religion that we find difficult

to observe then what should we do? Ask Allah! Ask Allah for help; O Allah! You make this easy for

me. Are we struggling with ‘خشوع’ in ‘صل وة’? Ask Allah! Are we struggling with ‘حجاب’? Ask Allah!

Do we find it difficult to spend in Allah’s way, to give charity? Do we find it difficult to give up lying?

Whatever it is, whenever it is, big or small, anything we find difficult to do; ask Allah for help! Because

who can help us but Him? Who can give us the ability but Him? Ask Him for help in matters which are

related to the دين, and also matters that are related to our worldly lives.

.and indeed it is difficult except for the humbly submissive.… وإنها لكبيرة إل على الخاشعين

Prayer is difficult. Long phone calls, long emails, repeated text messages, they are easy but two ركعة are very difficult, very heavy. Who has the more right that we should complain to him? Who has that

right that we should beg him, ask him? Allah or people? Who has the power to change our affairs?

Who knows our situation better than we know our situation? Who is all able? Allah!! People cannot help

us unless and until Allah lets them, unless Allah sends them for our help. Therefore do not find this

prayer heavy because this prayer is the solution to our problems. Do not find it heavy. When we pray

Allah hears us more than we say, He answers us more than we ask, He gives us more than we can

imagine.

Who are these people who do not find the prayer heavy?

They are certain that one day they are definitely going to meet Allah. Those who like to meet Allah;

Allah also likes to meet them. He who likes to meet Allah; Allah likes to meet him. He who dislikes to

meet Allah; Allah dislikes to meet him. Check your heart; do I want that one day I should meet my

Lord? I should see Him when He is pleased with me? What is the proof for this claim? It is our ‘ ةوصل ’,

if our feet go easily to ‘ ةوصل ’ then yes we want to meet Allah but if our feet find it difficult to go to

‘ ةوصل ’ than that means we find it difficult to meet Allah.

O children of Isreal! Remember my favor that I have bestowed upon..…يا بني إسرائيل .47

you, and that I have preferred you over the worlds.

48. And fear a day when no soul will suffice for another soul at all ….

Fear that day when no person will come to your aid…. No soul will suffice for another at all!!

….nor will intercession be accepted from it, nor will compensation be taken from it, nor will they

be aided.

The بنى اسرائيل were the believers of their time and they thought that if we are the saved group then it

doesn't matter what we do, even if we reject Mohammed ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص there's no punishment for us. Allah

makes it clear here; no one will help another on that day. Their false belief is refuted here. You must do

something yourself. You must prepare for that day.

In the following آيات the بنى اسرائيل are now reminded of their past where Allah bestowed favors on

them and when they did not value these favors then what happened to them. This is a mirror for all of

us. So this is a chance for us to reflect on ourselves, on our ways, on our attitude what are we doing.

49. And [recall] when We saved your forefathers from the people of Pharaoh, who afflicted you

with the worst torment, slaughtering your [newborn] sons and keeping your females alive. And in

that was a great trial from your Lord.

50. And [recall] when we parted the sea for you and saved you and drowned the people Of فرعون while you were looking all.

In front of your eyes your enemy was destroyed.

51. And [recall] when We made an appointment with Musa for forty nights. But you took [for

worship] the calf after him, while you were wrongdoers.

52. Then we forgave you after that ….Despite your great wrong doing, we forgave you!…. so

perhaps you would be grateful.

When Allah gives us a chance after chance despite our errors, despite our sins, we must first learn from

our mistakes and secondly we must also be grateful to Allah for the fact that He is letting us live on.

He's giving us the opportunity to repent even though we have disobeyed Him.

53. And recall when we gave Musa the scripture and criterion that perhaps you would be

guided.

The book of Allah is the way out of misguidance; it is the way out of شرك, it is the way out of

ignorance, forgetfulness. This is why Allah gave them, the بنى اسرائيل, the scripture.

54. And [recall] when Musa said to his people, "O my people, indeed you have wronged

yourselves by your taking of the calf [for worship]. So repent to your Creator and kill yourselves.

That is best for [all of] you in the sight of your Creator." Then He accepted your repentance;

indeed, He is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.

For certain sins, expiation also has to be given like over here, the punishment also has to be taken.

55. And [recall] when you said: “O Musa! We will never believe you until we see Allah outright”.

So the thunderbolt took you while you were looking on.

56. Then we revived you after your death that perhaps you would be grateful.

When Musa عليه السالم returned with the Scripture, the بنى اسرائيل said we want to hear Allah too. So

Musa عليه السالم took along with him seventy people to the mount and when they got there they said we

need to see Allah and at their demand to see Allah lightning fell on them and they all died. Musa عليه

the religion of ,دين ?prayed and Allah brought those people back to life. What do we see here السالم

Allah should not be taken lightly. And one must not demand all the time that the دين be proven to him;

“I will only believe in Allah once I see Him”, No! Who are we? We're only servants.

And when the بنى اسرائيل eventually crossed the sea, when they left Egypt, فرعون was drowned, they

entered into an open desert:

57. And We shaded you with clouds and sent down to you manna and quails, [saying], "Eat from

the good things with which We have provided you." And they wronged Us not - but they were

[only] wronging themselves.

Despite receiving all these blessings they did not change.

58. And [recall] when We said, "Enter this city and eat from it wherever you will in [ease and]

abundance, and enter the gate bowing humbly and say, ح ط ة”.…

What does حطة mean? استغفر هللا! O Allah forgive us! “Relieve us of our burdens”!

They were told to say حطة, why:

…. We will [then] forgive your sins for you, and We will increase the doers of good [in goodness

and reward].

59. But those who wronged changed [those words] to a statement other than that which had been

said to them.…

They were told to say حطة but they changed it to حنطة which means wheat. O Allah! Give us wheat!

And this was mockery also.

.…So we sent down upon those who wronged a punishment from the sky because they were

defiantly disobedient.

60. And [recall] when Musa prayed for water for his people, so We said, "Strike with your staff

the stone." And there gushed forth from it twelve springs, and every people knew its watering

place. "Eat and drink from the provision of Allah, and do not commit abuse on the earth,

spreading corruption.

61. And [recall] when you said: “O Musa! We can never endure one [kind] of food….

We cannot eat the same food every day, they were given من و سلو ى and they said we need a change in

the menu.

….so call upon your Lord to bring forth for us from the earth its green herbs and its cucumbers

and its garlic and its lentils and its onions….

Purposeful people, people who have a purpose in their lives, they simplify their lives by bringing

simplicity in their food. They do not live to eat. Their goal is not to savor the world but to save the

world and in order to save the world sometimes they have to give up on their taste also, on what they

eat also, so they eat what is sufficient to bring them strength, what is sufficient to improve their ‘عبادة’

and to lead productive lives. But when people lack purpose in life then they begin to desire one delicacy

after another. And who could be more useless than the one who is described over here, the one who

does not even make دعا himself. He says you make دعا, you ask Allah to give us this and this food.

.… [Musa عليه السالم] said, "Would you exchange what is better for what is less? Go into [any]

…. And they were covered with humiliation and poverty and returned with anger from Allah

[upon them]. That was because they [repeatedly] disbelieved in the signs of Allah and killed the

prophets without right. That was because they disobeyed and were [habitually] transgressing.

Allah’s anger, Allah’s punishment, Allah’s curse befell these people; Why? Because they did not accept

Allah’s orders, they rejected His blessings, they did not value Allah’s gifts.

.…Indeed those people who believe ..…إن الذين آمنوا .62

.…and those who were Jews or Christians or Sabiens, those among them.… والذين هادوا

Again ‘ايمان’ and ‘عمل صالح’, again and again; those who do this, who have ‘ايمان’ who do ‘عمل صالح’:

They will have their reward with their Lord and no fear will there be .… فلهم أجرهم عند ربهم

concerning them nor will they grieve.

The بنى اسرائيل thought that since they were the children of prophets they would attain salvation. Allah

sets the criteria here. It's not your blood that will cause you to enter ‘جنة’. No! It is your faith, it is your

deeds. If either ‘ايمان’ or deeds are lacking, then a person will have fear and he will have grief.

More reminders are given:

And [recall] when We took your covenant, [O Children of Israel, to .… وإذ أخذنا ميثاقكم .63

abide by the Torah] and We raised over you the mountain, [saying], "Take what We have given

you with determination and remember what is in it that perhaps you may become righteous.

64. Then you turned away after that. And if not for the favor of Allah upon You, and His mercy,

you would have been among the losers.

We see that at every turn they disobeyed their Lord. When they refused to accept this covenant, the

mountain was suspended over them. They were forced to accept the covenant of Allah at gunpoint

literally and very soon they went back on their word. Remember the promises and commitments that we

make with our Lord, the promises that we make in the name of Allah, the intentions, the commitments

that we make in His name; we must fulfill them.

Allah gave these people rest bite again. He forgave them, He gave them another chance, and it happens

with us also. Allah keeps giving us chances.

And you had already known about those who transgressed among you .…ولقد علمتم .65

concerning the Sabbath….

Those amongst the بنى اسرائيل, who transgress the سبت, who broke the سبت through trickery and deceit;

How? They were basically a fishing community who were forbidden from fishing on Saturdays, So

what did they do? They put their nets on Friday and they took them out on Sunday. They were told not

to work on Saturday. They said we're not working on Saturday but they got the fish of Saturday. So

many people play around with Allah’s law in order to avoid it or they change the law in order to suit

their own desires. Who are they deceiving? Themselves! Why? Because how can they deceive Allah??

They are in fact harming themselves, because look at what happened to these people:

.we said to them be Apes. They were turned into Apes despised..… فقلنا لهم

66. And we made it a deterrent punishment for those who were present and those who succeeded

[them] and a lesson for those who fear Allah.

In this is a lesson that if anyone does something similar than Allah can punish them in the like manner.

He can disfigure their faces also because those who tamper with Allah’s law, then Allah can alter their

faces. Tampering with Allah’s law, changing it, playing with it, this is a crime!

67. And recall when Musa said to his people. Indeed Allah commands you to slaughter a cow.

They said do you take us in ridicule….

Because remember the بنى اسرائيل at one point they began to worship a calf so they were told destroy

this love that you have in your hearts. How? You have to slaughter a cow. They responded “are you

making fun of us O Musa?”

….Musa عليه السالم said: “I seek refuge in Allah from being among the ignorant”.

Because only an ignorant person would mock at others.

68. They said, "Call upon your Lord to make clear to us what it is." [Musa] said, "[Allah] says,

'It is a cow which is neither old nor virgin, but median between that,' so do what you are

commanded."

69. Then they said, "Call upon your Lord to show us what is her color." He said, "He says, 'It is a

yellow cow, bright in color - pleasing to the observers.

70. Then they said: “call upon your Lord to make clear to us what it is. Indeed all cows look alike

to us and indeed we, ان شآءهللا( if Allah wills), we will be guided”.

71. He said that Allah says; “it is a cow neither trained to plow the earth nor to irrigate the field,

one free from fault; with no spot upon it”. They said; “now you have come with the truth”….

When they run out of questions they said OK now you have come with the truth.

….. So they finally slaughtered it but they could hardly do it.

Allah’s commands should be taken as they are. There's no need for hair splitting because when we ask

unnecessary questions then that makes things more difficult for us. They were told slaughter a cow, any

cow, they asked questions and made it difficult for themselves. More questions made it even more

difficult for them. So whenever something seems difficult say:

.Allah I am pleased with you as a Lord ; رضيت بالل ربا

This is ‘حق’, this is the truth, I have to change. The book, the law, the Quran does not have to change, I

have to change. Allah I accept it, you give me the ability to do it without argument. Accept it! Take it!

72. And [recall] when you slew a man (you killed a man) and disputed over it but Allah was to

bring out that which you were concealing.

73. So We said “strike the slain man with part of it”. Thus does Allah bring the death to life and

He shows you His signs that you might reason.

They -the بنى اسرائيل were even shown a dead man coming back to life. They were shown these clear

proofs so that they would develop faith. They were favored so much yet they did not accept.

Indeed Allah has spoken the truth when He has said; “those who disbelieve, whether you warn them or

you don't warn them they do not believe”…. ل يؤمنون ….

لك .74 ن بعد ذ Then your hearts became hardened after that so hard that .… ثم قست قلوبكم م

they became like stone or even harder….

Why harder than stone even? Because what happens to stones? Allah says:

….for Indeed there are stones from which rivers burst forth….

There are stones through which rivers gush forth, small holes in rocky terrain from where water is

gushing out… a water fall for instance; weeping mountains, they cry so easily…

….and there are some of them that split open and water comes out…

Page 33: هتاكرب و الله ةمحرو مكيلع ملاسلاdata.alhudamedia.com/Media/Al-Quran/Fahm_al-Quran...The Quran is the book of Allah… The book of Allah that has been sent

There’s a crack and yes a little bit of water comes out:

…and then there are some of them that fall down from the fear of Allah, and Allah is not unaware

of what you do.

You see when a person does something wrong the first time, he feels worried in his heart. But when he

does that wrong again, when he repeats that mistake again, then his fear decreases and he keeps on doing

it until that fear, that worry is replaced with pleasure. He finds pleasure in disobeying Allah. He finds

relief in abandoning Allah’s commands. Sin does not feel like a sin. This is when the heart is diseased.

This is when the heart has become hard, so hard that the Quran does not enter this heart and nothing

affects this heart and so his actions do not change. Disobedience to Allah, what is it? It is like a fatal

poison. It is like a poison that will kill a person, literally kill him because sin is a killer of faith. It

destroys ‘ايمان’ when a person deliberately, knowingly, repeatedly again and again sins without any fear

of Allah.

When the بنى اسرائيل disobeyed over and over again and they presented excuses and they argued with

their messenger, then what happened? Their hearts became hard. So hard Allah says; harder than rock

because what happens to rocks? Rocks; they break as we see in this ‘ayah’, Some rocks break, some

rocks split, some rocks crack, some rocks fall, some rocks move. Yes they are firm, yes they are

stubborn, yes they are impermeable but at least they move and break but the hard heart, what happens to

it? It doesn't change, it doesn't move, it doesn't quiver, it doesn't break.

There are different types of hearts just like there are different types of rocks. Initially there is hardness

but what happens; some people, eventually a time comes when they cry. They cry easily just as water

gushes out. Some appear to be stubborn but eventually good comes forth, so eventually fall and humble

before Allah for their past lives. Others are harder than rocks; they don't crack, they don't break, they

don't fall.

So Muslims are addressed now that such hard hearted people, what do you expect from them O

believers…

….Then do you covet [do you hope O believers] that they would believe .… أفتطمعون .75

You think that these people would believe? No they're not going to believe. You think that they will

believe for you:

….while a party of them used to hear the words of Allah and then distort the Torah after they had

understood it.

So hard were their hearts that when they learnt the Torah, when they learnt their own scripture, what did

they do? They heard it, they knew it, they understood it, but then they changed it. Imagine changing the

word of Allah, this is a crime. Changing anybody's book, anybody's writing, changing that is a crime.

Changing the word of the Lord of the universe, that is an even greater crime. So these people who

changed the book after they had understood it, while they knew; those people who were not willing to

change themselves they want to change God's word. You think they're going to believe? No!

76. And when they meet those who believe, they say, "We have believed"; but when they are

alone with one another, they say, "Do you talk to them about what Allah has revealed to you so

they can argue with you about it before your Lord?" Will you not reason?

This is ‘نفاق’. This is hypocrisy which exists in so-called Muslims. Remember that hypocrisy does not

exist in disbelievers because they disbelieve, they have كفر inside and outside. نفاق and hypocrisy is in a

person who claims to be a believer, the person whose heart is neither Muslim nor is his tongue Muslim

nor is his lifestyle Muslim. What happens to this person; wherever he goes, he becomes like the people

around him but his true loyalties are not with the believers as we see this آية.

Allah says:

77. Do they not know that Allah knows what they conceal and what they declare?

How can they hide from Allah? He sees them wherever they go, whatever group they are with, Allah

watches them.

78. And among them are unlettered ones….

People who know nothing about the دين,

….who do not know the Scripture except in wishful thinking and they are only assuming.

There are some people who knew the scripture from among the بنى اسرائيل. Some people who knew the

scripture, the knowledgeable ones, they are scholars yet they opposed it, yet they lived against it. And

then there was the large majority of them who did not even know the scripture and so their actions did

not conform to the scripture. They did not know the Scripture, Allah says: ي ون those who did not… أم

even bother to learn what Allah had revealed. So what did they rely upon then when it came to their دين?

They relied on whatever they had heard from their elders. When it comes to the دنيا they work hard

themselves, when it comes to the matters of the دين, they just rely upon what they hear from

others. Why? Because دين is not their priority, if it was than they would learn دين.

Here we need to see ourselves also. Amongst Muslims there are those who know the book but then

what is their action like? What are their lives like? And then amongst us are those who do not know the

book. What is their priority? Each and every one of us needs to look at himself and herself how much

of the book of Allah do I know and whatever I do know, how much of it is really in my action.

79. So woe to those who write the scripture with their own hands and then say this is from Allah

in order to exchange it for a small price. Woe to them for what their hands have written and woe

to them for what they earned.

The reason for bad relationships is bad speech, rude speech harsh words; and good words leads to good

relationships. Now everyone! Say something good to the person sitting next to you, say something that

will be حسن and say something that will bring a smile.

So who said something good? Who heard something good? Nobody? The person sitting next to you

didn't say anything good? Sometimes we think being silent is best but Allah tells us; قولوا .… Say ….

Say a good word!

And sometimes we think we're saying good words but are they received as good words? Did the other

person even take it as good or did they get offended and hurt by it? Because sometimes we say, “I am

being very honest”, “I'm being very truthful here”, “this is حق, this is the truth, this is the reality”. Yes it

is the reality and reality, speaking the truth is حسن however we need to see, does it go well? Is it also

received well by the other? Speech is good not just when we think it is good but when the person

PART- D

AL-BAQARAH : 87-141

87. And we did certainly give Musa the Torah and followed up after him with messengers and we

gave Isa son of Maryam clear proofs….

Because remember the Isa عليه السالم was also a messenger sent to the بنى اسرائيل.

….And we supported him with the pure spirit (with جبرئيل). But is it [not] that every time a

messenger came to you [O children of Isreal] with what your souls did not desire, you were

arrogant?….

When anyone told you what you did not like to be told, you reacted so severely, how severely:

….Then a party of [messengers] you denied and another party you killed.

88. And they said: قلوبنا غلف ….. “Our hearts are wrapped”,…

Meaning we are too good for this guidance, we don't need it. Allah says:

…. But [in fact] Allah has cursed them for their disbelief, so little is it that they believe.

89. And when there came to them a book from Allah (The Quran), confirming that which was

with them - although before that they used to pray for victory against those who disbelieved….

Before the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص came, they used to ask Allah to send the last messenger.

….But [then] when there came to them that which they recognized; they disbelieved in it, so the

curse of Allah will be upon the disbelievers…. ه على الكافرين .…فلعنة اللـ

For a person sees the truth, he recognizes it, yet he does not accept it.

90. How wretched is that for which they sold themselves - that they would disbelieve in what

Allah has revealed through [their] outrage that Allah would send down His favor upon whom He

wills from among His servants.…

Why did they disbelieve in Mohammad ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص? What was the problem? What was the issue over here?

What was the reason? Because the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص was not from their line of blood. He was not from

there lineage. He was an Arab and because of this bias they rejected him.

Page 39: هتاكرب و الله ةمحرو مكيلع ملاسلاdata.alhudamedia.com/Media/Al-Quran/Fahm_al-Quran...The Quran is the book of Allah… The book of Allah that has been sent

such disbelievers is a humiliating punishment.

The بنى اسرائيل were told from before to believe in the last messenger and the scripture that the last

messenger would bring. They were told that you must help the messenger but when he was not from

among them, he was not from their line of blood, what happened? They rejected him.

91. And when it is said to them, "Believe in what Allah has revealed," They say, "We believe

[only] in what was revealed to us" ….

Meaning to our people.

…. And they disbelieve in what came after it, while it is the truth confirming that which is with

them. Say, "Then why did you kill the prophets of Allah before, if you are [indeed] believers?"

If you say that you believe and follow only Israeli prophets, then how come you killed them? Who

killed Yahiya? Who tried to kill Isa عليه السالم?

92. And Musa has certainly brought you clear proofs then you took the calf [in worship] after

that while you were wrong doers.

93. And [recall] when we took your covenant and raised over you the mount [saying], “Take what

we have given you with determination and listen”. They said [Indeed] “we hear and disobey”….

They said yes we know we've heard but we're not going to do it.

….and their hearts absorbed [the worship of] the calf….. the love of the calf, Why? ….because of

their disbelief.

…. Say, "How wretched is that which your faith enjoins upon you, if you should be believers."

Because they claimed to have ‘ايمان’, So on the one hand you claim to be believers and on the other

hand you do shirk? On the other hand you call the calf a God, How is that possible? What kind of faith

is this?

94. Say, [O Muhammad ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص], "If the home of the Hereafter with Allah is for you alone and not

the [other] people, then wish for death, if you should be truthful.

Again their false claims are being refuted; they are being shot down because the بنى اسرائيل believed

that they alone will be honored in آخرة. Why? Because of their blood, because they are بنى اسرائيل, they're the children of the prophets, they are the best, they are the chosen ones. Allah clarifies; it is not

your blood, it is not your family, it is not your lineage; it is your actions! And if really جنة is just for

Allah says:

They will never ever wish for death…. Why? ….because of what their .… ولن يتمنوه أبدا .95

hands have put forth….

They know what they are guilty of.

…. and Allah is all Knowing of the wrong doers.

96. And you will surely find them the most greedy of people for life – [even] more than those who

associate others with Allah….

Meaning the مشركين even are not as greedy for life as these people are.

…One of them wishes that he could be granted life a thousand years, but it would not remove him

in the least from the [coming] punishment that he should be granted life...

The fact is that no matter how long of a life a person lives, if it is not spent according to Allah’s

directives then that life is useless because at the end of that life even if it’s very long is going to be

punishment.

…and Allah is Seeing of what they do.

97. Say, "Whoever is an enemy to جبرئيل - it is [none but] he who has brought the Qur'an down

upon your heart, [O Muhammad ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص], by permission of Allah, confirming that which was before

it and as guidance and good tidings for the believers."

So the بنى اسرائيل came to the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص with excuses. They said; well, if جبرئيل has brought this

Quran to you, if he is the messenger who has brought this Quran to you then we do not accept

it. Why? Because we do not like جبرئيل, Allah says:

98. Whoever is an enemy to Allah and His angels and His messengers and جبرئيل and Michael -

then indeed, Allah is an enemy to the disbelievers.

He who is an enemy to Allah’s friend then Allah is an enemy to him. He who opposes Allah’s friend

then remember Allah declares war against him.

100. Is it not [true] that every time they took a covenant a party of them threw it away?.…

Every time they made a promise with Allah, what happened? They broke their promise.

….But [in fact], most of them do not believe.

101. And when a messenger from Allah came to them confirming that which was with them, then

a party of those who had been given the Scripture threw the scripture of Allah behind their backs

as if they did not know [what the Scripture contained].

As if they did not know that it was the book of Allah. They pretended that it did not even exist. Instead

what did they pursue?

102. They followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reigns of Suleiman عليه السالم.

It was not Suleiman عليه السالم who disbelieved….

Allah clarifies here:

…. it was شياطين that disbelieved by teaching people magic….

Suleiman عليه السالم did not teach magic, he did not practice magic, who practiced magic? It was شياطين.

Remember when a nation suffers from decline then such evils become very common among them that

whenever they have problems, instead of turning to Allah for solutions, for guidance, what do they turn

to? Such despicable ways!! Magic, fortune telling; why? In order to find solutions to their problems.

So instead of following the book of Allah, what did they do to the book of Allah? They threw it behind

their back as if it did not exist. And instead what did they do? They pursued magic, they practiced

magic. They went to fortune tellers.

….They followed what was revealed to the two angels at Babel هاروت and ماروت, but the two

angels did not teach anyone anything unless they said, “we are a فتنة,( we are a trial), So do not

disbelieve [by practicing magic]”….

The angels made it clear that they had been sent as a trial but what happened; instead of turning to the

book of Allah the people flocked to these two angels to learn magic from them.

…. and [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his

What kind of magic did they practice? Magic that would cause separation between a husband and his

But Allah says:

….But they did not harm anyone through their magic except by the permission of Allah…..

Even when they practiced their magic, they try to harm Allah’s servants, who could they harm? Only

those whom Allah allowed. The fact is that no one can hurt another even a little bit except with the

permission of Allah. It doesn't matter how great, how strong that magic is, it doesn't matter how strong

that tool is to harm the believer; If Allah protects His servant no one can harm him. Even with the best

weapon, even with the strongest magic, he cannot harm him. And if a servant has been harmed then he

should remember: I have suffered this harm: ‘باذن هللا; by the permission of Allah. Why? Why has Allah

allowed that I should suffer from this harm in my life? Why? Because this life is a test! This is not جنة,

this life is a test. This life is a world of problems where one doesn't end that the other comes because

Allah is testing u; What do we do? What do we say to Him? What do we think of Him? What hope do

we have in Him? What do we expect from Him? What do we look forward to? This life is a test and

nothing happens in this life except by His will.

…. And the people learned what harmed them and it did not benefit them. But (the children of

Israel) certainly knew that whoever purchases magic would not have in the hereafter any share….

Remember this anyone who practices Magic, who hires a magician; big or small magic, whatever it may

be then for him in the hereafter there is no share.

….and wretched Is that game for which this sold themselves, if they only knew.

So what do we see in this ayah is that there is no harm no gain except by Allah’s permission.

The Prophetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:

“know that if all of the nation were to gather together to benefit you, they would not be able to benefit

you with anything except with something that Allah had already written for you. And if all of the nation

gather together to harm you, they could not harm you with anything except what Allah has already

written for you”.

Now the believers are addressed:

104. O you who have believed, say not [to Allah’s messenger], راعنا ....

means please wait for us or please repeat yourself; hold on, slow down! But the Yahood, when راعنا

they heard the Muslims saying راعنا they started making fun of this word, they started saying راعينا

which means our shepherd. So Allah told the believers don't use this word راعنا .

Now when you see people opposing you in this way, making fun of your words, mocking at you, then it

hurts. Allah سبحانه و تعالى comforts the believers:

Neither of those who disbelieve from the people of the Scripture nor the مشركين wish that any

good should be sent down to you from your Lord….

Why do they make fun of you? Why do they oppose you in such mean ways? Simple; they're envious!

They're jealous! When they see the privilege of Prophet Hood has been taken away from them and

given to you, then they have rejected that Prophet Hood and they hate you. And in order to take revenge

they have opposed you from behind you. They have been treacherous, they have hurt the Prophetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص,

they have hurt the believers; they have mocked at him, they have mocked at the Muslims, they have

mocked at the Quran. Allah says:

Why do you feel envious? Ask him for what you want. Remember! This is not the way of a believer.

What?? A believer does not become angry with Allah’s distribution of provision, rather he accepts

Allah’s decree. And over here the way of the Yahood is mentioned that how they opposed the Muslims

and they mocked at them. This is also not the way of a believer because respect is a major part of our

religion. ‘ادب’; respect! Let's not be those who merely learn knowledge, lets also learn respect.

Allah says:

106. We do not abrogate a verse or cause it to be forgotten except that we bring forth [one] that

is better than it or similar to it. Do you not know that Allah is over all things competent?

107. Do you not know that to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and

[that] you have not besides Allah any protector or any helper?

108. Or do you intend to ask your messenger as Musa was asked before? And whoever

exchanges faith for disbelief has certainly strayed from the soundness of the way.

What is their desire? That you should leave your faith; Why?

….Out of envy from themselves [even] after the truth has become clear to them. So….

What should you do?

…. pardon them, over look, until Allah delivers His command. Indeed, Allah is over all things

competent.

What we learn from this is that when a حاسد; an envier, a hater shows his hate, when they cause you

hurt, when they resort to such despicable ways; then just forgive, ignore, overlook and wait until Allah

brings about a decision. Be patient! Wait! Allah will take revenge but don't stoop to their level in

opposing them.

……And whoever disbelieves in it - it is they who are the losers.

Now in these verses two important things are mentioned. First of all we learn:

ه هو الهدى Guidance is only that which has come from Allah and guidance is only .… إن هدى اللـ

given by Allah.

The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said that Allah says:

يا عبادي كل كم ضا إل من هديته، فاستهدوني أهدكم O my servants! All of you are misguided except for those whom I guide.

So ask me of guidance and I shall guide.

Allah tells us: you want guidance? Ask me, I shall guide! We want guidance; we want to improve the

condition of our heart, the condition of our عبادة, the condition of our prayers, who do we ask for

guidance? Allah!!

Then secondly; we learn over here that for guidance the book is necessary. The ‘كتاب’ is necessary

whose study is not sufficient rather the book must be read over and over again. It must be recited

over and over again in order to take benefit from it. Those who do not give the حق of تالوة, they are

in loss. Those were given توفيق to do تالوة of this book than they should thank Allah. So if Allah

has allowed us to sit here today, to commit to this, then let’s thanks Allah for this opportunity.

O children of Israel! Remember my favor which I have bestowed .… يا بني إسرائيل .122

upon you and that I preferred you over the worlds.

123. And fear a day when no soul will suffice for another soul at all, and no compensation will be

accepted from it, nor will any intercession benefit it, nor will they be aided.

A final warning is being given over here.

And now in contrast to this entire nation, one man is mentioned. Which man? Ibrahim خليل هللا ;عليه السالم.

Once a man recited in‘صل وة’:

ه إبراهيم خليال .خليل And Allah made Ibrahim His واتخذ اللـ

There was another person praying behind him and uncontrollably he said:

.the eye of the mother of Ibrahim has been cooled قرت

Meaning she must be so happy because Allah took Ibrahim as خليل.

هن .124 And mention when Ibrahim was tested by his … وإذ ابتلى إبراهيم رب ه بكلمات فأتم

Lord with commands and he fulfilled them….

Who was Ibrahim عليه السالم? The one who surrendered to Allah, he obeyed His orders even though that

meant bearing the opposition, the hostility of his entire nation, of his own father.

Allah says: هن .He completed them; he fulfilled every command that was given to him ;فأتم

…. [Allah] said, “Indeed I will make you a leader for the people”. [Ibrahim] said: “Is this also for

my descendants?” [Allah] said: “My covenant does not include the wrongdoers”.

One individual is made the leader of humanity and One Nation is stripped off their leadership; their

leadership is taken away from them. What is the difference? Ibrahim was obedient to Allah and that

nation of بنى اسرائيل was disobedient to Allah. So if we wish to be of those near Allah then we have to

become like Ibrahim; obedient to Allah at every cost.

A person wants for his children what he wants for himself. In fact we want for our children more than

what we want for ourselves. Ibrahim عليه السالم was gifted leadership and he wanted the same leadership

for his people but Allah made it clear that leadership is not inherited, it is granted. It does not matter

whose children we are, what race or family we are from, what matters is our عمل, our obedience to

Allah.

125. And [mention] when we made the house, a place of return for the people (the كعبة) and [a

place of] security also. And take, [O believers], from the standing place of Ibrahim a place of

prayer….

The place where Ibrahim stood and built the كعبة, pray over there:

…..and we charged Ibrahim and Ismail [saying], (obligated for both of them) “Purify my house ….

and those who were staying [there] for worship and طواف for those who perform.…طهرا بيتي

those who bow and prostrate [in prayer].

Places of worship should be built, they should be bought but then they should also be maintained and

looked after. They should also be kept clean. These places should be maintained, they should be cleaned

happily because look Allah told His prophets to clean the house of the Allah. This was the work of the

Prophets. They cleaned the houses of Allah; this is an honorable deed from which we should not stay

behind.

And [mention] when Abraham said, "My Lord, make this a secure city .… وإذ قا إبراهيم .126

and provide its people with fruits - whoever of them believes in Allah and the Last Day." [Allah]

said. "And whoever disbelieves - I will grant him enjoyment for a little; then I will force him to the

punishment of the Fire, and wretched is the destination."

Ibrahim عليه السالم made دعا for مكة. When Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص did هجرة to مدينة, he made دعا for مدينة and we

make دعا for wherever we live, that the place we live in, the city, the home, the institutions we come to,

they become better, safer and more secure places because as long as people do not feel safe they cannot

work and if they cannot work they cannot prosper. And with violence, we see that people suffer in this

world and they also suffer in the next. So all things that destroy the peace and safety and security of a

land, they must be avoided.

We also see over here that when Ibrahim عليه السالم asked for leadership for his children, Allah said that it

is not for the evil doers and here when Ibrahim عليه السالم asked for fruit, for worldly provision only for

those who believe, Allah said it is for everybody. So what do we learn? Guidance is a gift that Allah

gives to those whom He loves. But worldly Riches, Allah gives it to everybody; those whom He loves

and also those whom He does not love.

127. And [mentioned] when Ibrahim was raising the foundations of the House and [with him]

Ismail also….

Both were doing this work together, father and son building the house of Allah.

…..[Saying]: ربنا تقبل منا …. “Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed, you are the Hearing, the

Knowing”.

What a great, what a noble task is being completed but with so much humility; O Allah! Accept this

from us, we want you to be happy with us for the little effort that we have made.

O our Lord! Make us Muslims, [make us those who“ ..…ربنا واجعلنا مسلمين لك .128

surrender] to you, and also from our descendants a Muslim nation [who surrenders] to you. And

show us our ways of worship.…

Teach us how we should worship you;

…. and accept our repentance. Indeed, you are the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful!”

129. “Our Lord! Send among them a messenger….

Ibrahim عليه السالم is a visionary, he's praying for the many generations that will come after him. He's

praying O Allah! Send among my children, among our children a messenger;

….from themselves who will recite to them your verses and teach them the book and wisdom and

purify them. Indeed, you are the Exalted in might, the Wise.

You see over here the duas of the messengers, what do they include? The names of Allah because Allah

says:

ه السماء الحسنى فادعوه بها .Allah has the most beautiful the most excellent names.… وللـ

So call upon Him by those names.

This دعا that Ibrahim and Ismail عليه السالم made, it was accepted two thousand years later. So make dua

with all your heart and leave it to Allah to grant it whenever He decides.

What was the way of Ibrahim?

When his Lord said to him, "Submit", he said "I have submitted to the Lord of the worlds."

This was the way of Ibrahim. He was the surrendered servant that when the command of Allah has

come then my wish is nothing before His command.

132. And Ibrahim instructed his sons [to do the same] and [so did] Yaqoob [saying]:” O my sons!

Indeed Allah has chosen for you this religion, so do not die except while you are Muslims”.

133. Or were you witnesses when death approached Jacob, ( Yaqoob عليه السالم was at his last

breaths) when he said to his children, "What will you worship after me?" They said, "We will

worship your God and the God of your fathers, Ibrahim and Ismael and Ishaaq - one God. And

we are Muslims [in submission] to Him." …. ونحن له مسلمون

This is what the Messengers taught, the lesson of توحيد and that is what they died upon. And that is the

legacy that every Messenger left behind that “O people worship your maker, worship your Lord”.

When the messenger Muhammad ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص passed away Abu Bakr said: “Whoever used to worship

Mohammad, than he should know that Mohammed has gone and whoever used to worship Allah than he

should know that Allah is الحي القي وم; the ever living the eternal.

ة قد خلت .134 .…That was a nation which has passed on .… تلك أم

Ibrahim is gone, Ismail is gone, Yaqoob is gone, Ishaq is gone. These people are gone.

ا كسبتم …. .…they will have [the consequences of] what they earned.… لها ما كسبت ولكم م

Each person will get the fruit, the result, of his efforts:

….And you'll have what you have earned and you will not be asked about what they used to do.

Their deeds are for them and our deeds are for us. So we should worry about our deeds; what we are

doing.

135. They say, "Be Jews or Christians [so] you will be guided." Say, "Rather, [we follow] the

religion of Ibrahim, inclining toward truth, and he was not of the مشركين."

Because يهود and ‘Nasara’, they began committing shirk.

Say this ayat with me, all of you, because Allah tells us to say this:

ه وما أنز إلينا وما أنز إلى إبراهيم وإسماعيل وإسحاق ويعقوب .136 قولوا آمنا باللـ

نهم ونحن ق بين أحد م بهم ل نفر والسباط وما أوتي موسى وعيسى وما أوتي النبي ون من ر

له مسلمون Say [O believers!] “We have believed in Allah and what has been revealed to us and what has been

revealed to Ibrahim and Ismail and Ishaq and Yaqoob and the descendants. And what was given

to Musa and Isa and what was given to the Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction

between any of them and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him.

137. So if they (meaning the rest of the people) believe in the same as you believe in, then they have

been rightly guided but if they turn away they are only in dissention ( they are only then opposing

you) and Allah will be sufficient for you against them… ه Allah will suffice you… فسيكفيكهم اللـ

against them and He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

What do we see here? That no person’s ايمان is acceptable unless it is like that of the صحابة. What was

their ايمان like? Believing in everything that Allah has revealed and we see over here in this Ayah that

when a person fears the enemy, opposition, haters, critics then what should he do? Seek Allah's help!

ه !Allah will suffice you against them !فسيكفيكهم اللـ

So whenever you feel afraid, say:

;اللهم اكفنيهم بما شئت O Allah! You suffice me against them however you wish.

I don't know how, but you protect me from their evil.

ه .138 ….the color given by Allah [And say, “ours is] .… صبغة اللـ

Ours is the religion that has come from Allah just as something is dipped in some color and it takes on

its coloring so we dip ourselves in the religion of Allah. We take on that color.

ه صبغة …. ?And who is better than Allah in [ordaining] religion .… ومن أحسن من اللـ

Whose coloring could be better than Allah? Then how should we appear? As Allah’s servants! Those

dipped in the color of Allah, those who have taken on the color of the religion of Allah.

.and we are worshippers of Him.… ونحن له عابدون

139. Say: “Do you argue with us about Allah while He is our Lord and your Lord? ….

Our message is simple that everyone should obey Allah, worship their creator. What's wrong with this?

Nothing is wrong with this. Then why do you argue with us? This is the message of Islam, this is a

message of all the Prophets.

….For us are our deeds, for you are your deeds. And we are sincere [in deed and intention] to

Allah…. ونحن له مخلصون

140. Or do you say that Ibrahim and Ismail and Ishaq and Yaqoob and the descendants were

Jews or Christians?.…

Where they divided? Did they carry all these titles? Did they have these labels and the names? No.

….Say, “Are you more knowing or is it Allah who is more knowing?”….

Allah has not said that they were like this.

....Who was more unjust than the one who conceals a testimony he has from Allah?.…

The previous nations were entrusted with this responsibility that when the last messenger comes, support

him, testify to his truthfulness. But instead what did they do? They recognized him from the signs that

they had been given but yet they rejected him and the signs, the knowledge they had, they buried it, they

hid it.

….Allah is not unaware of what you do.

One may attempt to bury the truth but he cannot destroy the truth, it will certainly rise again.

ة قد خلت .141 ا كسبتم …that is a nation which has passed on.… تلك أم it.…لها ما كسبت ولكم م

will have [the consequences of] what it earned and you will have what you have earned….

ا كانوا يعملون .and you will not be asked about what they used to do.… ول تسألون عم

What are we going to be asked about? Our deeds! So the real importance after توحيد, after ‘ايمان’ is of

what? ‘عمل صالح’. So now at the end of the gathering again examine the heart: والقلب متوجه الى هللا or not?

May Allah make us amongst the م خل ص ين, the م سل م ين, the م ت ق ين, the carriers of the Quran; Those who

carry the Quran in their hearts, who carry the Quran on their tongues and also in their actions.
