With the New Year, the Installation of Officers begins, and the first was Bethel Lodge No. 699 in January. The Ceremony of Installation is truly a memorable ceremony, with some of our most beautiful ritual. The most beautiful of all, in my opinion, is the General Charge. The Ceremony of Installation is one which unfortunately, too many of our members see but once a year, and if the ceremony is slow, many members are tired and don’t fully absorb the General Charge at the end. Most of the Installation Ceremony is done exactly as it was in England 200 years ago, with one notable exception. The General Charge, delivered to the lodge at the end of the ceremony, is for the most part, a “made in Canada” charge. It is a magnificent charge and contains the very essence of Masonry. The complete General Charge was first put together in 1874 and published in 1876, by a devoted mason, Otto Klotz. Otto Klotz was a German, coming to Canada as a young man. He was a successful businessman and hotelkeeper in Preston, Ontario. He never aspired to the chair of Grand Master, but in recognition for his services to Grand Lodge, he was given the rank of Past Grand Master, Honorary, in 1885. Various paragraphs of the General Charge were taken from different Grand Masters’ addresses, but paragraphs four to eleven, on the ideal of a freemason, were composed by Brother Klotz and appear at the end of an article entitled “The History of Freemasonry” which was published in the Canadian Craftsman for March of 1868. When each lodge in our district has its Installation, make it a priority to attend. Listen to the ritual and absorb it. The new master and his officers are starting on a daunting voyage to show their devotion to their lodge and the craft in general, and to exemplify what it means to be a Mason. Give them your support! May the Great Architect continue to watch over our Craft. Fraternally, R. W. Bro. Clair Bracken D.D.G.M. Congratulations & Best Wishes / Pg. 5 February Tracing Board / Pg. 6
