Cognitive Quests at OJSH

By Mrs. Villneff

During the second cycle of complementary courses in grade 8, students were able to learn about strategy in their “Cognitive Quests” course. The focus was on using a variety of strategies to win games and debates.

We had to conduct debates and games differently than we might at home due to covid protocols, but students seemed to enjoy themselves and learn plenty nonetheless!

Enjoy these pictures of students planning their arguments and rebuttals for debate, and playing in a Connect 4 tournament.

Planning for the affirmative side

Looking at facts and fallacies

Connect four seems like an easy game until

you start really thinking about it!!

Student participation in the complementary courses during the first semester was excellent. With the move to quarters for the last half of the year, grade eight students will now focus on core subjects until mid-April.

Grade eight students will be able to engage in complementary course cycles again in the fourth quarter of the year starting April 22.

Kindness by Ms.Ferguson

February is the month of kindness, as with everyday of the year students should strive to be kind members of their community. Having this type of behavior through acts of generosity, consideration, and concern for others without expectation of praise is one of the easiest ways to show we care.

A bright and colorful bulletin board has been created in celebration of this month, and gives students several ideas of different ways to demonstrate random acts of kindness. ------------------------------------------------------

February 2021 OJSH Newsletter

Dear Traffic Safety Stakeholder: Our traffic safety focus for the month of February is Distracted Driving. Driving is one of the most complex tasks a person can do on a daily basis, as it involves operating a vehicle on the road while also paying attention to traffic signals, other drivers and road users, road conditions, and weather.

When a driver becomes distracted, their ability to carry out this task safely is compromised. Drivers should always make sure their eyes and mind are fully on the road the moment they get behind the wheel.

Distracted driving facts:

· Research shows that distracted driving plays a role in 20 to 30 percent of all collisions, and distracted drivers are three times more likely to be involved in collisions than attentive drivers.

· Some studies have shown that texting impairs driving more than alcohol or drugs.

· The penalty for distracted driving in Alberta is a $300 fine and three demerit points.

· Between September 1, 2011, when distracted driving legislation was introduced, and March 31, 2020, there were 208,176 convictions.

· 96 per cent of these convictions were for using a hand-held communication or electronic device while driving.

· Drivers can stay alert and attentive by following a few tips: putting their phones out of reach; keeping both hands on the wheel; programming GPS units, radio, or audio

systems before driving; and pulling over if needed.

Communication Technologies

By Mrs. E. Radvanszky

Com. Tech students were thankful to return to in-class learning in January to finish their animation module. Students learned the basic fundamentals of animation principles and displayed their understanding of these principles in various mini animations. A student animation reel will be available to view on the school website.

Grade 9 students currently enrolled in options, are also trying their hand at animation. Students are learning how to use Adobe Flash to create multi-layered projects which incorporate moving elements on different plains. Students are also learning the importance of background design. Students are asked to create a stage for their final animation, and need to demonstrate their understanding of how characters interact with their surroundings.

COUNSELLING CORNER

Welcome to Semester 2 everyone! Unfortunately, it has not gotten off to a flying start but it is also not something that we are not used to here in North Central Alberta. There are a number of things coming up in the next couple of months that the counsellors would like to make students and parents aware of.

Between now and the coming of spring, there a few virtual events that our school community may benefit from:

- March 9 @ 7pm U of A “What is Engineering?” Virtual Event

- March 11 Discover Concordia Info Night

- April 16-17 1st ever virtual Inclusion Alberta Family Conference

We would also like to make our school community aware of some new developments that may assist our parents in the ever changing world of parenting. Positive Parenting Alberta has a new course available to help any parent improve their parenting skills with the Toddlers to Tweens program that deals with a large variety of issues about parenting and relationship building. We also would like to make families aware that Healthy Families Healthy Futures has a new website available for any family that feels they need or would like some support to help them deal with any family issues.

To draw our submission to a close, we would like to highlight some scholarships that are available to our graduating students, whose deadlines for application are approaching very soon. There are 3 National Indigenous Scholarships for Western University in London, Ont. available for any First Nations, Metis or Inuit students who may be applying to attend Western in the fall. The deadline to apply is Feb. 14, 2021 at midnight. We would also like to make parents and students aware that Alberta Culture, Multiculturalism and Status of Women is happy to announce the new LEAD Program to assist women and gender-diverse Albertans to pursue fulfilling careers. The program will provide more opportunities for under-represented Albertans to apply their talents in a wide range of pursuits – from science, technology and trades to the arts – helping to build the workforce of the future in Alberta. The deadline to apply for the LEAD Program is Feb. 21, 2021.

The Wrap around Department would like ask any parents or students interested in any or all of the above programs, events, and scholarships, to please contact us as soon as possible to get any information you require to contact the agencies, apply for scholarships or register for programs. We are always here to help.
