As many of you know, Central Kitsap Fire &Rescue is reaching out educate our communityabout challenges we have with our firestations. Specifically, they need to be improvedfor community safety and to provide ahealthier working environment for ourfirefighters.
I wanted to profile some of the morechallenging station issues here through CKFRWeekly. There are a lot of them, so I’ve decidedto break this information into multiplecommunications. For this edition I’m focusingon the seismic and location issues that wewant to improve. Our next edition will focus onsome of the challenges our facilities pose tofirefighter health and safety.

Fault lines cover the Olympic Peninsula near where stations are located.
Seismic Issues
The fact is that all of the District’s stations arenot up to current seismic standards and are indanger of collapsing in the event of anearthquake. This would hamper the District’sefforts to reach you and your family during anemergency.
Many of our facilities are 60 years old, andhave cracks in the walls or on supportingbeams. They were built by volunteers, or at atime when there were no seismic standards. We are grateful for these contributions, but it’stime to upgrade and make them safer for thepublic and our firefighters.

Location Stations 52 (Olympic View), 54 (Hintzville) and55 (Lake Tahuyeh) are located in areas awayfrom population centers. This delays responsetimes for emergency calls. The bond would replace Station 52 with a newfacility at Anderson Hill and Olympic View. Italso would combine stations 54 and 55 intoone facility at Coho Way and Seabeck Holly(Station 57) to better serve the LakeSymington area. Many of our stations were built before weknew where our population centers would be.We have a chance to fix that now with thisbond.
Station 52 is on a dead-end road. It has a large crack in its back wall due to soil and site erosion.
Conclusion Capital facilities are too expensive to fundthrough the District’s regular operating levies. The Board of Fire Commissioners is consideringasking voters to approve a bond to fund theseprojects. The good news is that – even with the bond –the average homeowner would see a netdecrease of $24 per year in the taxes they pay tothe District compared to what they paid in 2019.This is because an excess levy has expired andan old bond for apparatus will be paid off beforethe new bond would take effect in 2021. I appreciate you taking time to learn more aboutthe challenges we are facing to provide service.Rest assured, we have a plan to fix these issuesand continue to provide you and your familywith the highest level of emergency servicespossible. As always, feel free to contact me withquestions at [email protected] or (360) 447-3566.Thank you.

Recently an issue was brought to the SafetyCommittee; the Decontamination of our Helmets andthe Removable Liners. Decontamination of ourstructural ensemble is mainly focused on our jacket, pants, and hood. Through the IAFF’s sponsored FASTtest we know that firefighter’s hair and brow lineshowed high exposure levels from contaminants. Weshould also include the decontamination of ourhelmets in our process. Some options we are lookinginto are a second set of helmet liners eitherindividually or a bank for the stations. In themeantime please take the time to protect yourselfand clean your helmet and liner while going off shiftwith the hope that it will be dry upon your return toduty. Attached is a link to a video from LION on howto perform this cleaning. Click on “AdvancedCleaning-Structural Helmets”https://www.lionfireacademy.com/training/nfpa-1851#
