Welcome to Issue 10 of our W Magazine.

How times have changed since the introduction of our W Magazine in Jan 2013! We had just delivered 161 new Porsches in 2012 (1,305 nationally) and in 2014 we more than doubled this figure by achieving 355 (2,726 nationally). Already in our first quarter of 2015 we have reached 126.

In this new issue we feature the awe inspiring Cayman GT4 and jaw dropping GT3 RS and include a look into the history of the many GT3 and RS versions.

We cover the debut of a new Boxster Spyder and find Porsche heading back to the roots of the roadster in this manual only race version of our award winning convertible.

With Porsche entering three cars into the top category of the World Endurance Championships and our own Mark Webber at the wheel, we eagerly await the start of the 24 Hours of Le Mans on 13th and 14th June.

Closer to home we will again be hosting our Level 1 and Level 2 Advanced Driver Training courses at Eastern Creek on the 22nd June. With the instructors from the Porsche Sport Driving School flown down especially, this is a great day out: giving you the chance to get to know your Porsche and really brush up on your general driving skills.

To celebrate the tenth edition of our Magazine and my tenth personal visit to Finland for ICEFORCE 2016, we are

accepting bookings early this year with an unprecedented 30 places on offer for our client base. There will be more on this in our next issue but please call me on (02) 89 666 911 anytime if you are interested in joining us.

Finally, we feature our Marketing and Events Co-ordinator, Alexandra Bromley (the woman responsible for W Magazine), who shares her personal Porsche story.

I look forward to seeing you at Porsche Centre Willoughby again soon.

Rolling start.

Keeping the independent character of its successful predecessor, the classic fabric roof is still opened and closed by hand and the Spyder is only available with a six-speed manual transmission.

The manually operated lightweight top is suitable for everyday use and brings to mind roadsters of the past, while the fabric fins that stretch back to the rear lend the roadster’s silhouette its characteristic design. The front and rear sections of the Spyder take their design cues from the new Cayman GT4.

Firmer sports suspension with a 20 mm lower ride height, brakes from the 911 Carrera, direct steering and a 3.8 litre six-cylinder boxer engine with an output of 276 kW (375 hp) offer a traditional sports-car driving

experience with leading performance.

Taken to the limit in a mid-engine sports car, occupants can look forward to the lightest, yet most powerful Boxster available with a sprint time of 0 – 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, a top speed of 290km/h and a very reasonable overall fuel consumption of 9.9L/100km.

The result of a successful 12-year evolution, the features and character of the new 911

GT3 RS are more in tune with professional motor sports than every previous model.

The design of the new 911 GT3 RS embodies the integration of lightweight construction materials, motor sport oriented aerodynamics, agility and sporty elegance. Its powerful high revving 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-6 engine has an output of 368 kW (500hp) and maximum torque of 460 Nm. Together with rear axle steering and high down force aerodynamics, the 911 GT3 RS has exceptional driving performance.

Compared to the 911 GT3 RS 4.0 (997), the new 911 GT3 RS still has considerable performance advantages despite having the same output. In classic performance tests the 991 reached 0 – 100 km/h in 3.3s with the previous generation 997 4.0 in 3.9s.

The engine air intake is completely new and achieved via the side air intakes in the rear side panels adopted from the 911 Turbo. This provides less engine intake resistance and improved flow over the rear lid due to the omission of the air box.

Power is initially transmitted via a 7-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) with short transition ratios and shifting times and a particularly sporty tuning of the shift functions. Together with Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus, including fully variable rear axle differential lock, the new 911 GT3 RS has a powerful drive unit and therefore is the foundation for outstanding driving performance.

Despite the wide 911 Turbo bodywork and large wheel/tyre combinations, the new 911 GT3 RS has a kerb weight of 1,420 kg: making it 10kg lighter than the 911 GT3. This has been enabled by the wide-ranging use of carbon fibre (CFRP), magnesium and polycarbonate.

Defining aspects include design features such as the large front spoiler lip and the muscular carbon fibre rear wing (in the same colour as the car) with black side plates and the black filigree wing supports made from forged aluminium.

A new feature on the 911 GT3 RS is the “PIT SPEED” button on the centre console. Derived from motor sports, it is used for the first time and enables an individually adjustable speed limit to be set at the push of a button, e.g. in the pit lane of a race circuit.

The potential to push limits has never been so great as it is today. And who knows? The 911 GT3 RS might just show you that the realms of impossibility are much further away than you ever dared imagine.

The 911 GT3 RS will debut at Porsche Centre Willoughby in the third quarter of 2015.

Almost 10 years after the Porsche Cayman first saw the light of day at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show in 2005, this extraordinary mid-engine sports car now represents the fourth version of the current model range. With a remarkable lap time of 7:40 at the Nurburgring Nordschleife, the Cayman GT4 has the potential to rewrite the success story of the 911 GT3.

The engine, chassis, brakes and aerodynamic design of the Cayman GT4 are configured for maximum driving dynamics: yet the top model still retains the versatility and everyday utility that is typical of the two-seat coupe.

The Cayman GT4 is powered by a 3.8-litre naturally aspirated flat-six engine with 283 kW (385 hp) and 420 Nm adopted from the 911 Carrera S. Power is transmitted by a six-speed manual gearbox only, incorporating dynamic gearbox mounts. 0 –100 km/h in 4.4 seconds,

a top speed of 295 km/h and combined fuel consumption of 10.3 l/100 km.

For those wanting even more performance, the Cayman GT4 can be optioned with Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB), full shell seats made of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP), a custom Sport Chrono Package with the unique Track Precision app and a Club Sport Package consisting of a roll-cage in the rear, preparation for a battery disconnect switch, a motor sports manual fire extinguisher and a 6-point seat belt for the driver’s side.

compartment lid and the large low-lying front spoiler lip, provides a high cooling capacity for the high-performance engine, aerodynamic down force at the front axle and protects the radiator against damage. Black Bi-Xenon headlights and darkened rear lights complete the new look.

The aspect is 30mm lower than the Cayman and the large 20-inch GT4 wheels fill out the wheel housings nicely, giving purposeful character to the new Cayman GT4. Other distinctive elements are the GT4 side blades in the front of the side air intakes to improve engine intake and the SportDesign exterior mirrors.

A dominant and highly efficient large, fixed GT4 rear wing: connected to the rear lid by two aluminium supports and rear spoiler with its integrated air separation edge below, enables an air flow with aerodynamic down

force for high driving stability and exceptional cornering; while the sports exhaust system provides the highly emotional soundtrack.

Technical aspects of the new Cayman GT4 are based on the 911 GT3. As a mid-engine sports car and a prime example of driving dynamics in its class – it follows the conceptual tradition of cars such as the 904 GTS, 911 GT1, Carrera GT and the 918 Spyder.

GT sports cars from Porsche embody the most passionate connection possible between everyday driving and the race track and promote our core: Intelligent Performance.

The 996 GT3 engine is a naturally aspirated flat six-cylinder engine, based on the unit used in the Porsche 911 GT1 race cars. Known as the ‘Mezger’ engine, after its designer Hans Mezger, the engine uses the original air-cooled 911’s versatile dry-sump crankcase, with an external oil reservoir. It has 265 kW (355 hp), compared to 221 kW (296 hp) of the regular 996.

The RS – short for the German ‘RennSport’ which translates literally to Racing Sport. This iconic engine is a carry over from the 911 GT3 with a slightly different specification for race homologation. Springs and dampers are 15% stiffer than the GT3.

Only 140 right hand drive GT3 RS cars were built by Porsche.

“Since the start of production, more

than 14,000 911 GT3shave been produced.”

The GT3 is a line of high-performancemodels named after the FederationInternationale de l’Automobile (FIA)GT3 class it was designed to race in.

THE EVOLUTION OF THE 911 GT3/RS

The 997 GT3 RS 4.0 is the final evolution of the 997. Featuring a 4.0-litre engine and using the RSR crankshaft with increased stroke dimensions, power is increased to 368 kW (493 hp) and 460 Nm of torque.

Chassis development was influenced by the GT2 RS and other 911 RS models.

Only 600 cars were built and the 4.0-litre flat-six engine is one of the most powerful six-cylinder naturally aspirated engines in any production car: with a 93 kW per litre output, boasting a 0 – 100 km/h time of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 310 km/h.

The RS provided a homologation model for use in a range of racing series. It is 20 kg (44 lb) lighter than the GT3, weighing in at 1,375 kg (3,031 lb). This is achieved by the use of an adjustable carbon fibre wing, plastic engine cover and a lightweight rear window: giving the RS corresponding power to weight ratio of 220 kW (300 hp) per tonne.

In 2010, the gen 2 997 GT3 RS received an additional 26 kW (35 hp) due to a larger 3.8-litre flat-six, bringing total power to 331 kW (444 hp).

The 997 911 GT3 version had a new 309 kW (415hp) 3.6 litre flat-six engine, featured “zero lift” aerodynamics and a modified track oriented version of PASM: making it the first of Porsche’s GT3 versions to feature an electronically adjustable suspension system. 0-100 km/h in 4.1 seconds with a top speed of 311 km/h.

In 2009 Porsche launched the second generation 997 GT3. Boasting an enlarged 3.8-litre engine producing 324 kW (435hp), it featured dynamic engine mounts and a pneumatically lifting front axle.

Its new 9,000 rpm flat-six naturally aspirated engine exploits its 3.8-litre direct fuel injection capacity to generate 350 kW (475 hp) and 0 – 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds with a top speed of 315 km/h.

For the first time, a specially developed GT3 7-speed PDK is fitted as standard.

The 991 GT3 at the rear is 44mm wider plus rear track has been widened by 31mm, improving lateral dynamics. PTV Plus and rear-axle steering are fitted as standard.

Starting in 1923, the 24 Hours of Le Mans was originally the Grand Prix of Speed and Endurance and was considered one of the oldest and most prestigious automobile races in the world. Le Mans was designed to push manufacturers to build sporty yet reliable cars.

“Porsche is part of Le Mans, and Le Mans is part of Porsche. They fit together. Nevertheless, no one makes these kind of investments due to nostalgia; they have to pay off in the future. As far as I can remember, there was never a regulation that gave the engineers so much freedom and required so much innovation. The obligation towards producing a hybrid and the efficiency formula represent revolutionary challenges. I am proud that our engineers ventured the furthest of any. Ultimately, Porsche customers will benefit from this.” Wolfgang Hatz – Research and Development Porsche AG.

After a thrilling start to the race last year with changing weather conditions, numerous accidents and a relatively calm night, Timo Bernhard (with team mates Brendon Hartley and Mark Webber) took the lead in the Porsche 919 Hybrid. This was after 20 of the 24 hours. At 12:36 on Sunday Timo handed the leading car over to Mark Webber. Less than 20 minutes later Mark was forced to slow down and drive solely on electric power back to the pits. The team could not repair the damaged powertrain.

The second 919 Hybrid in the hands of Romian Dumas, Neel Jani and Marc Lieb likewise proved to be as competitive but was hampered by a drivetrain problem. However their No. 14 car crossed the finish line under its own power.

“Our return to Le Mans has been a strong team effort. It almost happened that our secret dream came true to top the debut of the Porsche 919 Hybrid with a podium finish. For a remarkable period we were leading the race. Now we keep our heads up and will plan an even stronger return for 2015.” Wolfgang Hatz.

MISSION 2015At the Paul Ricard Circuit in France, Porsche presented the 2nd Generation of its Le Mans Prototype 919 Hybrid as a technical evolution in a three-colour concept.

The 2nd Gen 919 is equipped with a 2-litre V4 turbocharged petrol engine with an output of more than 500hp powering the rear axle and an electric motor with over 400 hp that drives the front wheels and gets its electricity from two energy-recovery systems. A liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery temporarily stores converted braking energy from the front axle as well as converted exhaust energy. The reworked drive system is more powerful and efficient than before. The Porsche 919 Hybrid was homologated for the top-energy category (8 megajoules for one lap in Le Mans) for the first time in 2015.

In Le Mans on the morning of Saturday 14th June 2014, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, Chopard co-president, had the pleasure of awarding some of the first Superfast Chrono Porsche 919 Limited Edition watches to the winners of the Porsche Carrera Cup before the official race.

At 3pm that afternoon, the Porsche drivers, including Australian Mark Webber, set off on the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans race that has shaped some of the greatest motorsport legends and is where Porsche forged part of its own legend between 1970 and 1988.

United by shared values such as the constant quest for performance and excellence, Porsche Motorsport and Chopard naturally gravitated towards each other around their passion for racing.

Born of a desire to pursue reliability and innovation, Chopard have unveiled a special Porsche 919 Limited Edition watch based on the Superfast Chrono bodywork. Its dial echoes various details of the Porsche 919 Hybrid, which will compete again in 2015 in the LMP1 category at Le Mans.

This imposingly sized chronograph with its 45 mm diameter case and fly back function beats to the pace of a mechanical Chopard 03.05-M calibre chronometer certified by the COSC. This ‘engine’ and its oscillating weight may be admired through a sapphire crystal engraved with “Official Timing Partner Porsche Motorsport”.

Inspired by the new Porsche 919 Hybrid, the stripes on the dial evoke the racing car’s rear diffuser. Likewise, the “919” appearing in a red rectangle inside a 9 o’clock sub dial is identical to the number of the Porsche racing cars. Finally, the rubber strap is inspired by the slick tyres serving to negotiate bends at extremely high speeds.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans is unquestionably the most highly anticipated fixture in the FIA World Endurance Championship season. In 2014 the legendary race carried a distinctive flavour since seeing the grand return of Porsche to a track that has brought the German team 16 victories: a still unmatched record.

Alongside my colleague and Porsche Sales Consultant Stewart Budd, we have been able to build a strong social media following which has become an example for Porsche dealers worldwide. PCW has also been acknowledged by Porsche Cars Australia and Germany for our website design and creativity.

I’ve been privileged enough to organize launches to welcome new models over the years such as the new 981 series Boxster and Cayman, the 991 Series 911 and its variants, the New Generation Panamera and Cayenne models and I can’t wait to launch the 911 GT3 RS and Cayman GT4. I’ve also been able to participate in events such as the Porsche Police Car Engagement Programme, the 50 Years of 911 Harbour Bridge Crossing and will be getting up close and personal with the 918 Spyder in March as part of the Porsche Australia E-Mobility Roadshow.

As much as I’ve achieved so far, I’m still hinting every year to attend Camp 4S – one of the Porsche Winter Experiences in Finland, which is an experience of a lifetime – I’m sure they’ll get sick of me nagging and send me over soon…. probably on a one-way ticket.

What are your hobbies and interests?Besides being obsessed with Porsche, I ride motorbikes, enjoy snowboarding, dabble in a bit of modeling and own a 2m long Diamond Python named Speck.

Speck has been with me since I was 21 and will live for a long time to come. He’s travelled with me from Canberra, around many share houses in Sydney and has accompanied me on numerous photo-shoots: including one for our partners Verve Portraits in Willoughby. Speck has even visited PCW to see Uncle Sean in the Oblong Office!

Set up for long distance sports-car racing, this stunning 1973 911 Carrera RS spent the first years of its life on some of the longest and most prestigious race tracks on the European Continent. Its history shows in its 110 litre long-range fuel tank and race version 915 gearbox, which uses a different style oil pump to keep temperatures at bay on long straights at high revs.

Being a ‘first 500 car’ (Porsche had to build a minimum of 500 to go racing in the 70s, but ended up making 1590 due to demand) this yellow 2.7 Carrera RS features thinner gauge panels and glass, stiffer suspension, larger brakes, wider rear wheels and arches and that iconic ‘duck-tail’ rear spoiler.

The 2.7-litre flat-six engine produces 150 kW / 210 hp which made this 911 RS the fastest road-going car in Germany of its day. Not for long though, as it quickly found a new home in Japan where it stayed until imported to Sydney by David in 2006.

The ensuing restoration process was driven by PR Technology: an independent Porsche specialist. They took care of refurbishing tired original parts, rebuilding the engine and all other mechanicals and electrics while making sure the car remained period RS correct.

Exclusive Body Werks handled the paintwork and restored the exterior back to factory appearance. They then gave the car fresh coats of ‘light yellow’- the same colour as when it left the factory in Germany. David says “The paint is brilliant and gets a lot of comments!”

Power to weight ratio grants it remarkable performance with a sound and feel that purist drivers long for.

In the words of former factory driver Jürgen Barth, “The Carrera RS 2.7 is the basis for Porsche motorsport in the 1970s”.

There is no denying this gorgeous, ultimate collectors’ 911 would be a centrepiece of any dream garage.

With an increase in market value of over 650%, the Porsche 911 RS 2.7 Carrera represents the best classic car investment of the past decade! Current market ‘73 RSs are selling for £500,000 plus, depending on condition and originality. The even rarer “Lightweight” versions of the RS are more valuable still, with one example selling at auction earlier this year for €1.4 million.

In this issue’s restoration feature Porsche enthusiast David Withers introduces us to one of the most desirable cars on the planet.

This 911 Carrera RS is the Touring version, which is more civilised on the road and closer to the 911 S in body specification: retaining many parts suitable for normal motoring. They scaled at 1,075 kilograms: still quite light for a semi-civilized road machine.T
