Everything in Fiji begins with kava (Fiji’s ceremonial drink). Dating back before history was recorded, the kava ceremony was an example of the deep culture that made the Fiji experience unique. kava, known as Yaqona, is a tranquilizing non-alcoholic drink that numbs the tongue and lips. Sustainable tourism focuses on reducing the impact of tourism through becoming informed about and respecting the cultures and customs of the destination, supporting local businesses, and seeking businesses that are environmentally responsible. Through this there will be little negative impact and support will be provided to the local economy.

While not all travel companies practice sustainable tourism there are industry leaders, such as Intrepid Travel, which have built this into their core values. Intrepid, a company specializing in small group adventure tourism, was founded in 1989 and since its inception has practised responsible travel. Flight Centre’s Carbon Emission Offsetting Program

Flight centre has teamed up with cleaner climate ltd., to provide a link to a ‘carbon calculator’. This adds a simple procedure at the time of booking your travel arrangements that will allow you to determine the carbon emitted from your flight and voluntarily fund a renewable energy project in a developing country to offset it.

For example, should a traveller want to go ‘carbon neutral’ they can offset the carbon emissions produced by their trip through cleaner climate, who in turn put the money into a project that will save the same amount of carbon emissions through energy efficiency means (efficient light-bulbs) or energy renewable projects (wind turbines, land fill remediation, solar).The company’s projects are structured in accordance with guidelines set out by bodies such as the United Nations Framework convention On climate change (UNFccc) and the gold Standard and are monitored by a third party to verify that they offset the amount specified.

gluten-Free Travelling in New Zealand bY NIcOlE McDOUgall, FlIghT cENTRE haMIlTON

Sometimes it’s difficult to figure out what to eat when travelling. This gets even more difficult when you have dietary restrictions, but with a little planning you can have a great trip and some great meals. I have an intolerance to gluten, which means I can’t have wheat, barley, rye and a variety of other related grains. This is made even more difficult since these ingredients show up in the strangest places. If you let the restaurants know ahead of time this can significantly increase the quality and variety of your meals.

here were some of my favourites:

Hermitage Resort, mount Cook They brought me a separate bread course, with individual dips and a very nicely toasted gluten free bread. The waiters were all very knowledgeable and made sure that every course was safe for me. It was also very, very delicious, everything from the breads, to the roast lamb, to the strawberry and champagne granata.

Winnie’s Restaurant, Queenstown This is a laid back pub with a huge pizza menu, they make a terrific gluten-free crust and everything on the menu is clearly labeled. The crust was thin and crispy, and there was a lot of different toppings to choose from. Even my travelling companions couldn’t tell the difference.

Pannikers, Arrowtown Not only was arrowtown an adorable little town, the variety of gluten-free foods was amazing! I had gluten-free Eggs benedict, and it was terrific. They had a huge selection of gluten-free foods, including meat pies, breads, pancakes and they could make most things on their menu gluten-free.

Hammerheads, Auckland a very nice seafood restaurant, with a very thorough menu. The mains were all good, but the part I remember best was their panna cotta. It was so, so, so good!

The great thing about travelling gluten free in New Zealand is that everyone seemed to understand what I was talking about, which seems to be a difficult thing to explain in North america. It was easy to come across gluten free products in cafes (I had an amazing gluten-free friand in christchurch) grocery stores and even convenience stores carried cookieTime brand gluten-free chocolate chip cookies.

run all the boats in Egypt. If you get on a boat in Egypt, your captain is most likely a Nubian. They have a great culture where they shun most technology and live very happy, family oriented lives. They bring an authentic feel to the ships with their quite unique culture. We stopped at a Nubian home where about 10 family members lived together and showed us around. There were a few rooms, however most of the building was open air (no roof), where the men shared Shisha and the women painted henna tattoos. It was really neat to experience the local culture, when everything else here is so touristy.

The ships themselves were also filled with Nubian culture, with all the meals prepared by the captains. The meals were very good with lots of stews, meats, falafel, and pitas. There was always plenty of food. I’m a burger and fries kind of guy, so when I’m eating vegetables, you know the food is good! The last night on the ship, we docked at a large beach where the captains made a bonfire, and we sat in a circle enjoying Nubian dance and song. Then the Nubians had us sing our local songs, which turned into quite the karaoke (complete with beers)!

I recently took a vacation to Egypt, joining a tour with On-the-go. Of course I returned with great pictures and memories of The Pyramids, valley of kings, and other key sites. One thing I felt I had to come back and tell people about was our 2 days living on a felucca boat sailing down the Nile.

First let me discuss the felucca itself. It is a wind-only powered sailboat that you live on with up to 14 other people as you sail up the Nile. The boat is basically a large mattress with pillows and a screen over top to block the scorching sun and everyone sits together enjoying the sights of the Nile (some of us with beer in hand). It is a very simple cruise,

with no ‘luxuries’ on the ship. If you require the washroom, you signal the captain, and he pulls up on the edge of the Nile, where you jump off and find a bush! There was also a beach we stopped at where the currents keep the water clean, so we were able to swim right in the Nile. at night we pulled up on shore and took out our sleeping bags. It was actually quite comfortable to sleep and there are not many things quite like watching the sunrise over the Nile!

I’d also like to touch on the crew themselves which are a major part of this trip. They are run by a local people called the Nubians, who make up a small fraction of the Egyptian populace and essentially

as some background, I have three children aged 5, 3, and 4 months. My eldest has flown from Toronto, canada to Sydney, australia on five occasions, twice to Europe, and across North america to los angeles and vancouver. I guess you could say my children are well travelled. Recently my wife flew down with all three and met me in jamaica where I already was on business. Most of our friends thought she was crazy. Not only did she need to get them all to the airport on her own, through check-in and security, and immigration at the other end, but there was a 2-hour bus

ride in jamaica to the resort where we were staying. I met up a few hours later – I am blessed, I know. I don’t profess to being an expert on the subject but thought our experiences could assist other parents.

Most airlines class an infant as under 2 years old and sometimes the child only needs to be under 2 on departure to qualify for the Infant rate for the return flight. The catch here is that they will not be assigned a seat but instead need to sit on your lap. We all know having an almost two year old (or even two month old) sitting on your lap for a few hours is not much fun, particularly on a long flight. There are also many questions relating to the safety so getting a spare seat can make all the difference. You have two options; you could just buy the seat at the standard rate or child fare or chance getting a spare being next to you.

Of course there are some things you can do to have better success with this. When making your booking, find out which flights have the most seats available and see if the one that does fits with your schedule. The more spare seats available the better your chances are of getting one. You can ask your travel consultant to give you an idea as they can see more details on seat availability than you can on a website.

When reserving seats, pick an aisle and window seat with an empty middle seat as most people will not choose the middle and thus they are last to be allocated. If someone does show up they are very likely to move to another middle seat to give you the spare, often without even having to ask. It’s less likely that someone will do the same with an aisle or window seat. also, the cabin crew will usually look at moving anyone in between the two of you. Of course if they can’t move we will usually offer them the window after takeoff so we can sit together. and who knows, it is possible your child will have a melt down at some stage so a better seat can be a small payment for what the other person may yet experience. It’s important to note that even if you do reserve seats they are not guaranteed and they can get changed.

Most of the year, the climate is moderate, but in winter it’s cold throughout most of the country, with the exception of southern kysh and Okinawa.

CurrencyThe official currency for japan is Yen. coins are available in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 yen and bank notes in denominations of 1,000, 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 yen.

Passports and visascanadian citizens need a canadian Passport valid for at least six months beyond the date of your expected departure from the country. a tourist visa is not required.

Electricityvoltage is uniformly 100 volts, a.c. There are two kinds of frequencies in use – 50 hz in eastern japan and 60 hz in western japan (including Nagoya, kyoto and Osaka).

TippingIndividual tipping is not common in japan, not even to waitresses, taxi drivers, or bellboys. Rather, in lieu of tipping, a 10 to 15% service charge is added to bills at higher-priced hotels and restaurants. at higher-end japanese inns with individualized maid service, a 10 to 20% service charge is added.

General healthThere are no vaccinations required for entering japan from anywhere around the world. Tap water is safe to drink anywhere in japan.

Languagejapanese is the official language. Dialects are used in areas, particularly in kyoto and Osaka, but standard japanese, based on the speech of Tokyo, has become more popular through the use of television, radio and movies.
