eptsgg Dear friends: A few weeks ago the nation expressed horror at the worst mass shooting in our American history. Unbelievably, just a few days ago the Illinois House failed to pass a bill to ban "bump stocks" and other devices that allow guns to fire so rapidly that they can kill scores of people within minutes. Opponents on both sides of the aisle claim the bill could turn legal gun owners into criminals. Well, no. It would only turn owners of rapidly-firing weapons into criminals. Why would anyone want such guns anyway? Most Americans - including many gun owners -- understand the logic of legislation banning rapidly-firing weapons, just as many gun owners understand the value of vigorous background checks for gun ownership. But special interests have managed to obfuscate the issue, causing many to believe that supporting such laws is un- American. Nonsense. Attempts to protect American lives can never be un-American. Religious leaders must issue clarion calls for a humane society. I am currently working with other local clergy members to take a stand against rapidly-firing weapons. Our beliefs diverge on many issues. But we all share a steadfast belief, born from deep moral and religious convictions: Guns designed to shoot faster and more lethally have no place in a humane society. Period. We should all expect our elected leaders at every level of government -- local, county, state, and federal -- to pursue zealously a ban on the sale of guns and gun devices that have made killing so chillingly efficient. We should moreover take a strong stand against gun violence of all sorts, whether occurring in the streets of Chicago or anywhere -- theaters, concerts, army bases, nightclubs, houses of worship, universities...elementary schools. You’ve all heard the expression “It takes a village” and it truly did take OUR village – our congregation and Jewish community – to make our services the most beautiful, spiritual and meaningful services around! I would like to begin by thanking our clergy, Rabbi Jeffrey Weill and Cantor Benjamin Warschawski – who both spent countless hours preparing for the High Holiday services – along with our organist and magnificent choir – who spent countless hours practicing for our services. Our Executive Director, Jeanette Sigler and our office staff, Bill Gerber, and maintenance staff, Ricardo Garcia, for making sure that our building both inside and out, was ready for the holidays. They all deserve a big thank you! Lee Levin, our Religious Services chairman, and the Religious Services Committee certainly deserve a thank you and should be lauded for their excellent work, not only during the High Holidays, but throughout the entire year. Members of this year’s High Holiday committee must be acknowledged for their help in making sure that our holidays ran so smoothly. To Shaynee Lichtenstein, our High Holiday Aliyah committee chair and her committee who worked endless hours. And a special thank you to Jeff Sacks, our Security Chair, and his committee for their diligence. We are grateful to our High Holiday daveners, our Torah readers, and our haftarah readers. Thanks to Amy Claver, chair of our Religious Education Committee and our Religious School staff – they are very much appreciated for their efforts on behalf of our students. We thank Rabbi Neil Brief, our Rabbi Emeritus, for his support to us throughout the year. And all year long, we depend on our volunteers, our board members, past presidents, minyan regulars, daveners, Torah readers, haftarah readers, committee chairs, our kitchen committee, Sisterhood and our Men’s Club. Thank you! But most of all, we must thank YOU – our members, both old and new – for your generosity and support of our synagogue and its programs. We need your involvement and participation to make our village thrive. Happy New Year!

…to Esther & Bob Manewith for sponsoring the Kiddush luncheon on September 16th in honor of their 60th wedding anniversary. …Linda & Harold Chizewer for sponsoring the Oneg Shabbat on October 6th in honor of Linda’s 75th birthday. …Inna Shuster & Arthur Aptekar for sponsoring the Kiddush luncheon on October 28th in honor of their son Leo’s bar mitzvah.

THANK YOU to the members of the High Holiday Aliyah Committee for all of their hard work in making selections for honors and making phone calls and everything else that came with the job. It was wonderful to work with such dedicated people. And so to the following members, Ed Cohen, Jeff Sacks, Rich Newman, Shel Post and Michael Lichtenstein, I once again say “Thank you, thank you” for all your help this year again. You were able to read my mind when necessary, you checked with me if changes were required. We worked together as a team which is what it is all about. I so appreciated all you did. With deepest respect and love for the work you do. Shaynee Lichtenstein, Chair of the High Holiday Aliyah Committee

WAYS & MEANS – Ada Rabinowitz, Chair

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our members and friends for their support throughout the year. We appreciate your commitment to our synagogue and are grateful for your participation. We are excited to tell you about our next two events. Blacklisted is an extraordinary production. We are pleased that we can present this wonderful show in our synagogue. We thank Carla and Allan Price for underwriting the event and making this performance possible. We will hear songs and music by famous artists that were not heard in the 1950s because these talented writers and performers were blacklisted. This special program will feature a cast of outstanding professional singers and actors. So please join us to hear and see this wonderful production on Saturday evening, November 11, 2017 at 7:30. Invitations have already been sent out. There is a flyer included in this bulletin for your convenience. There will be a dessert reception following the show. Our ad book “Women of Valor” has gone to press. We invite you to celebrate with us on Friday, November 17, 2017 at a Shabbat Dinner at 6:30 where we will distribute the book. Please RSVP for this dinner. A flyer is also included in this bulletin. Again, many thanks for making EHNTJC a priority in your lives.

Social Action Corner - Evelyn Lowenthal, Chair

Sunday morning November 5, 2017 10:00 a.m. following minyan at 9:30 a.m.

Bagels, Coffee, and…

People for a Safer Society is a gun violence prevention organization that was founded in early 2013, shortly after the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy. The organization aims to educate people and raise awareness on gun violence. The organization facilitates advocacy that can make a difference on local, state, and federal levels. After the presentation there will be time to reflect on their view of a solution for some of the violent actions that have taken many innocent lives. There will be a discussion on ways we may be able to help as well. RSVP to the synagogue office at 847-675-4141 so we

can plan for ample food and setup.

Donations will be accepted.

KRISTALLNACHT 79TH ANNIVERSARY

Thursday, November 9, 2017

7:30 PM following minyan at EHNTJC

Given the personal histories of many of our congregational families, each year EHNTJC sponsors a program to commemorate Kristallnacht. We will host this Kristallnacht commemoration at EHNTJC, featuring Cantor Benjamin Warschawski, Rabbi Jeffrey Weill, and University of Illinois, Chicago scholar, Dr. Richard S. Levy, who will speak on the significance of Kristallnacht, then and now.

In Loving Memory

If you wish to honor the memory of a dear one, a most fitting, traditional and dignified

remembrance is through a memorial plaque. Each memorial plaque, bearing the name and

yahrzeit date, is mounted in the Memorial Alcove in our chapel.

On the day of the yahrzeit, your loved one’s name is listed on a tablet in the chapel alcove.

For more information or to order a plaque, contact Bill Gerber in the synagogue office.

The following memorial plaques have recently been dedicated in the chapel:

Susan H. Block

by Dennis and Bonnie Feinberg

Morris Cook by Joan Cook

Bernie Malina by Shellé Malina
