Reutlingen – modern life in a history-filled environment

gateway to the swabian Alps

n If the first thing you think of when you hear the words ‚Swabian Alps‘ is Swabian cosiness, then you couldn‘t be more wrong. There is certainly a lot going on in Reutlingen, the eyevis headquarters at the foot of the Achalm, Reutlingen‘s local mountain. The first thing a visitor will notice is the lovely setting of the town, incidentally the ninth largest in Baden-Württemberg. The town, following the best Swabian tradition of a determined yet endearing mix of medieval timber-framing, Gothic churches and modern architecture, entices the visitor to stop and admire it.

Reutlingen is twinned with towns throughout Europe, but also in Tajikistan and the USA and carefully maintains those relationships as a sign of the open and urbane mindset of the town, always ready to welcome visitors.

Attractive shopping options for every taste, cultural variety and cosmopolitan people leave no doubt that Reutlingen and its

surroundings are a wonderful place to live and work. Undoubtedly why eyevis employees are so happy to work with us.

Reutlingen, Ideal Breeding-Ground for Innovative Engineeringeyevis considers itself to be in the best company in Reutlingen. Several famous companies of international standing, even today, were started in the area in the 19th century, at the time of emerging industri-alisation. The Alpine motto of „necessity is the mother of invention“, deeply engrained in the local mindset, produced companies such as Steiff, Märklin and Voith, to name but a few, whose products have worldwide reputation and recognition.

We see this as a continual stimulation to always be seeking to improve.

Reutlingen, Emphasis on Art and CultureThe Swabian Alps bear an extraordinary amount of history. This can be seen, for exa-mple, in the world‘s oldest known pieces of

artwork, discovered in a number of Alpine caves. Animal figurines carved out of fine mammoth ivory, the famous lion-man of the Hohlenstein-Stadel cave and flutes carved out of swan-bones all provide impressive signs that both the place and the people had already attained a high level of culture by the Palaeolithic era.

This is still the case today, as you can experience through the variety of musical and other cultural events that Reutlingen offers its guests and inhabitants. From cabarets through numerous museums to the Württemberg Philharmonic in Reutlingen, every taste is provided for.

Reutlingen, Worth Seeing, Experiencing and EnjoyingTowering over it all is the Achalm, Reutlingen‘s over 2319-feet high local mountain, one of the town‘s landmarks. The Achalm is always worth a trip for its observation tower, castle ruins and a well-frequented restaurant.

The Gönningen valley also attracts visitors with its lakes, its renaturalised travertine quarries and the Wiesaz waterfalls. The Listhof nature reserve to the south-east of the flat is an ecological haven which had been used as a training field for tanks until 1992. Since 2000, the area has been classified as having special environmental value and is therefore a nature reserve.

There is also a lot to seeing within the town itself. Inclu-ding some curiosities: according to the Guinness Book of Records, Reutlingen hosts the world‘s narrowest street. You can lift your eyes to the stars in Reutlingen‘s observatory and planetarium. The seasonal starry sky provides the programme.

Reutlingen and its immediate surroundings are also home to many unique culinary specialities. For example, kimmicher, Reutlingen‘s traditional bread buns with caraway seeds, are especially popular.

Mutschel, baked in the shaped of an eight-pointed star, have been one of Reutlingen‘s most popular baked wares since the 13th century.

There is even a ‚Mutschel-day‘, when dice are thrown to win Mutschel. The so-called Schiedwecken, veal pasties, are another

local delight.

In Short: Reutlingen offers a lovely mix of

cultural expe-riences,

a modern urban

environ-ment and

an attractive and extre-mely restful

landscape. Why don‘t you

come for a visit some time and see for yourself?

Spreuerhofstraße has been, according to the Guinness Book of Records, the narrowest street of the world since 2007, with an average width of 15 inches. The narrowest section is actually only 12 inches wide. So beware after having eaten a good meal!

Metzingen, Shopping Paradise for Determined Bargain Huntersn This small town in the near vicinity of Reutlingen is known worldwide as the number one address for the latest style, designer fashion and much more. Superior goods at outlet price turn a shopping trip to Metzingen into the ultimate outing. But it would be unfair to limit the town exclusively to its status as a brand-milestone. However small, the place is worth seeing.

Located in the fascinating valley of the Erm, Metzingen is surrounded by beautiful vineyards, orchards and large nearby forests. The town itself has a number of beautiful old squares and idyllic corners to display. St Martin‘s Church Square (Martinskirchplatz), the station, town hall and market squares are all worth spending some time in. You could also stroll or happily wander through the very nicely renovated historical streets.

Metzingen‘s present-day cultural landmark is the listed historic building ensemble. This is also the home of winegrowing traditions. Very few people know this, but Metzingen is also known as the town of the seven

winepresses. And after a day‘s wandering in the beautiful surrounding countryside or successful shopping in „Outlet-City“, it is certainly worth rounding the evening off with a glass of good wine.

Roaring success in dubai

Intersec 2011 in the Persian Gulfn After the already promising Intersec 2010 event, expectations for 2011 in Dubai were more than exceeded. The fair, which took place from 16th to 18th January 2011 in the City of Superlatives on the Arabian peninsula in the Persian Gulf, was a success for eyevis in every respect.

The numerous local and international visitors showed great interest in the products eyevis was exhibiting. Thus, the number of new contacts reached record heights. eyevis management puts great importance on presenting the company at its best throughout the world. This was realised at this year‘s Intersec, not least through the great commitment of all participants and the close collaboration between eyevis ME (Middle East) and eyevis itself.

We are confident that we will soon be able to inform you about new projects in the United Arab Emirates in a coming issue of eyevision.

New eyevis products at Hanover Messe Industryn In 2011, Eyevis can once again look back on a successful HMI for the ninth time in a row. We exhibited from the 4th to the 8th April in Hall 11 in the industrial automation sector. The HMI was after the ISE in Amsterdam (February) the second opportunity to present our innovations from the EYE-LCD-series to the public. The EYE-LCD-5500-

SN-LD as well as the EYE-LCD-6000-SN were a complete eye- catcher and we are happy to have made many promising contacts for these products.

The main focus was, however, on our 2x2 EC-56-LWXT-Cube-wall. This cube-installation – unique in the market – not

only caught the interest of the large German companies but also attracted the attention from many international visitors.

Reutlingen rocks the professional boxing galan The international belt of the WBF is now in Reutlingen! Björn Blaschke suceeded and is now on place three of WBF (World Boxing Foundation) world rankings after his win over the Congolese Jonathen Pasi.

eyevis has contributed hugely so that the box fight for the vacant WBF cruiserweight title was not only a sporting success. eyevis sponsored the local boxer and also provided a video wall for the event consisting of 16 EYE-LCD-4600-SN-V2.

On this night, the modular displays could demonstrate once again, how valuable they can be for the rental market. Using EYE-TOOL makes assembly fast and the result totally convinces. The Reutlinger Boxing Night, which certainly was not for the fainthearted due to one or the other drops of blood spilled, ended after 10 tense rounds with a triumphal point victory for the local boxing hero Blaschke.

The new eStreamer and its advantages – interview with Mark Schmidt and Andreas Kreim

the technology of unlimited possibilities

n The possibility to transmit DVI-signals without limitation or loss over long distances becomes increasingly important in modern installations. The eyevis-eStreaming solution provides a technology to transmit DVI-signals across networks in real time with extremely low latency. The following interview between Sabrina Raschke (Author for eyevision), Mark Schmidt and Andreas Keim demonstrates clearly what is possible with the new eStreamer and what the advantages are.

SR: Hello you two. After we had a little preview about the new eStreamer in the last edition of eyevision and since it has now been launched during the ISE in Amsterdam, I think it is about time to have a closer look at it. How about we start with you introducing yourselves to our readers?

MS: Hello, I am the IT-Director for eyevis and was in this capacity involved from the first idea for the eStreamer right through the development with Andreas Kreim up to the successful product launch at the ISE in February 2011. I will of course continue to be a part of the product development, in order to continuously improve the product and to provide it with further product features.

SR: Thank you, Mark.

AK: Hello Sabrina. I am the project manager for the development project and the

product manager for the entire eStreaming product range

SR: Thank you both. Now, let us talk about the eStreamer. Let us start with the question: What is the eStreamer?

MS: The eStreaming product range stands for flexible signal distribution via networks. Traditionally, digital video signals were connected via distributors, matrix or split controller to various displays or video walls. Development, however, is increasingly heading towards replacing the rigid signal distribution with a more flexible network management. This enables a location inde-pendent and adaptable signal distribution.

AK: The eStreamer acts now in this streaming network either as encoder to feed video sources into the network or as decoder to access video signals from the network and to show them on a display. The encoder and decoder are the same hardware and can be configured for both functionalities. Furthermore, it is also possible to combine the solution with Netpix-controllers and the eyecon-wall management system.

SR: Could you give me an example for the application of the eStreamer to demonstrate the specific advantages of the eStreamer solution?

AK: After the successful product launch during the ISE, we had many enquiries and

encouragement from interested parties who can see a project solution for this product.

A specific application scenario is the distribution of video sources within a building. The halls are fitted with displays for company and product presentations, further projectors and displays are located in meeting rooms. The everyday problem is the connection of many different sources such as e.g. notebook content of the conference participants, image films, surveillance cameras or television programs. These different sources can now be distributed to the desired displays using our eStreaming solution.

In addition to this outstanding feature there are also a range of technical advantages. However, to describe those, I would have to go into too much technical detail for this interview. Maybe we’ll have a chance to look at this topic more closely in the next edition of eyevision.

SR: Yes, that is definitely something we should consider! It is most definitely a fascinating topic! Thanks to both of you, I think, this was very descriptive for our readers.

teracom, Sweden‘s number one media company, trusts eyevis technology

solid like swedish steel

n When it concerns the operation of technical infrastructures for radio and television, Pay-TV offerings or data connection in Scandinavia, then Teracom is hard to ignore. The company covers 99.8% of all Swedish households with regards to the terrestrial digital data transmission. No surprise also, that the performance and security of the eyevis systems are in demand here. The Teracom Group consists of Teracom AB, Boxer TV-Access AB, Boxer TV A/S, Broadcast Service Denmark and Digi TV Plus Oy. The group offers a wide range of communi-cation solutions for radio and TV in Sweden, Denmark and Finland. Teracom AB is here the operator and owner of the data network for the entire group for the radio/ TV trans- mission. This central network connects almost 600 stations and a special network for monitoring tasks. Teracom as a limited company is owned at 100 % by the Swedish state and reports to the Ministry of Economy, Energy and Communication. The company group relies on technical solutions made

by eyevis to ensure extremely high security standards which are absolutely necessary for such a company. Currently, there are seven EYE-LCD-5200W displays and two

EC-67-LHD-CP-LED-Cubes in use. A NPX-4804- V8-D8-G1.0-Controller from the Netpix series is used as controller.

eyevis and the AV-company AED will cooperate even more closely in future

n With this distribution agreement, which the two companies have entered into recently, they have set the course for joint success in the Benelux countries.Eric Hénique, eyevis Marketing and International Sales Director, describes it fittingly with his own words: „We are very pleased about our cooperation with AED and we are proud to be a partner of this company. AED is one of the best companies in the AV sector and the rental of AV-systems that I have met world-wide. AED uses eyevis products because

they fit perfectly into their own professional product ranges. And then there is also the great potential for cross-rental business.“

AED distributes and rents out professional audio and video equipment in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg with the goal to offer its customers the best products in the audio and video sector. Consequentially, there are many eyevis products on display in the AED showroom in the Belgium town of Willebroek. AED distributes its systems

to concert organisers, bars and restaurants, churches, retail businesses and theme parks via a professional sales and installation network. You can also find AED installations in cinemas and conference rooms. Simply in all those places where perfect sound and best possible image quality matter.

eyevis has high requirements for the joint activities with regards to the fairness and respectability of AED concerning purchasing, sales and the after-sales care.

eyevis and VDC sign distribution agreement

n eyevis technology for highly specialised application areas - the distribution agreement enables the American VDC (Video Display Corporation) with their headquarters in Atlanta to distribute, install and operate eyevis products across all of North America.VDC is a worldwide leading provider of specialised display solutions for the medical sector, industry, simulation and military. eyevis products and system solutions are downright predestined for the high requi-rements made by those sectors. The future close distribution cooperation is seen by both companies as a great opportunity for success and growth. Eric Hénique says: „For us at eyevis this agreement is a further step to strengthen our worldwide market position. Both in sales and support for our recognised and searched for solutions directly within the North American market. We consider the great experience that VDC has in the display, projection and visualisation sector as an important building block for our success in North America.”

n Two and a half years have passed since eyevis presented its first LED-lit DLP-Rear-Projection Cubes at ISE 2009. Thanks to its numerous advantages, this innovative technology has now almost fully replaced the old lamp cubes. The main argument for LEDs is their life expectancy of around 60,000 hours, approximately seven times that of a high-pressure discharge lamp. As with most electronic parts, the LEDs‘ working temperature is a decisive factor for reaching the given life expectancy. That said, the term life expectancy when dealing with display technology includes the duration until a 50 % efficiency degradation compared to the original brightness. In other words, an LED is by no means exhausted at the end of the life expectancy period in standard conditions, but is simply half as bright as it was to begin with.

It depends on the cooling As already mentioned, reaching the life- expectancy given by the manufacturer hinges upon keeping within the LED‘s specific working temperature range. There was very little difference to be found between the cooling techniques used by individual lamp cube manu-facturers. Air conditioning was the method of choice: Fans blew an extensive amount of air around the lamp to avoid exceeding the working temperature. The introduction of LEDs for lighting projectors placed more challen-

ging demands on the cooling system in terms of ventilation. The lack of space alone in the filigree LED systems ruled out straightforward air conditioning. With LEDs, heat builds up on a very small surface which rules out the installation of a rela-tively large cooling element, which would not provide sufficient cooling efficiency. Manufacturers therefore set to the task of finding an alternative system to that ensure use of LEDs would respect norm conditions and also guarantee high reliability. Early on in the development of LED-projectors, we at eyevis opted for a heat pipe system.

The other possibility, a liquid cooling system, proved in our tests to be less efficient, to say nothing of our doubts about introducing liquids and tubes into an electronic device. At this point, the reader may well ask:

Keeping a Cool Head!

Page 17: eyevis - eyevision II 2011 EN

) eyevis inFoRMAtion

„A heat pipe? What on

earth is that?” Heat pipes are heat exchangers

which use a simple physical phe-nomenon to reduce heat. A heat pipe

is a sealed and encapsulated copper tube with an inner capillary structure. It transports heat efficiently thanks to an enclosed liquid which evaporates at the warmer end and condensates at the cooler end. Capillary suction, used by nature in trees to carry water from the roots to the leaves, ensures continuous circulation. The difference in temperature between the warm and cool ends of the heat pipe therefore keeps the process in continual motion. Heat pipes are not only highly efficient, but they are

also entirely wearfree, independent from any mechanical part and without the risk of liquid escaping. Today, they are used in a whole range of industrial appliances. Almost every laptop has one to cool its processors, oil pipelines remain stable even on the permafrost of Siberia thanks to them and the fact that they do not even need gravity in order to function is proven by their use in regulating the temperature of satellites in space.

In the unlikely event of a malfunction A technical failure in heat-conducting heat pipes is almost impossible. A fault could therefore only occur in the heat emission fans of the heat exchanger at the end of the heat pipe. Although, like all the components of our cube, these are exceptionally robust and reliable, we obviously cannot exclude the possibility of defects. Incidentally, this is the case for all fans, whether in purely air-conditioned, water-cooled or heat pipe systems. Each of these systems must release the heat to the outside air; this occurs through a cooling device or a heat exchanger with fans. However, with the heat pipe system, the heat transferring effect of the heat pipe itself remains fully functional even in the case of a fan-malfunction. As it obviously also does in the event of a power cut, since heat pipes operate passively. Without a supporting air flow from the fans, the heat exchanger will release heat into the outside air through sheer convection, thereby keeping the end of the heat pipe „cold“. Water cooling systems, on the other hand, showed too many weaknesses when tested for us to consider them. The necessary additional pumps, as well as the fluid pipelines and equalising tank, seemed to us to be additional sources of potential malfunctions, besides the already mentioned danger of

using liquids, in some cases poisonous ones, in electronic devices. In the case of a fan- malfunction in a water cooling system, heat transfer is maintained by the circulation of the liquid. It would then be the heat exchanger‘s task to release the heat into the outside air without the help of the fans. On the other hand, if the pump maintaining the circulation should then fail, heat would no longer be released from the LEDs. The LEDs would immediately overheat and the system would have to be switched off. Only the use of a redundant pumping system would be able to solve this problem, which, due to space and cost, is out of the question.

Heatpipes – what else! Of course, we have extensively tested our heat pipe system during its development and quality assurance and attempted to push it to its limits. Even with an increase of temperature to over 40 °C, a rare event in a regulated control room environment, our heat pipe-based system was able to keep the LEDs‘ working temperature well within the norms. Should there be, against all expectations, a complete fan-malfunction, the LEDs‘ intensity will automatically be reduced to 70 % for safety. However, the extent of this efficiency reduction on an image will be negligible as we expect that the LEDs will not be functioning at full capacity anyway. Assuming an ambient temperature of 25 °C, a reduction in LED-brightness to 80 % would be sufficient for the heat pipe alone to maintain the LEDs in the normative temperature range without the supporting power of the heat exchanger‘s fans. The heat pipe‘s extraordinarily high performance and its fail-safe operation have answered our question about the best cooling system for LEDs: Heat pipes – what else!

17

Page 18: eyevis - eyevision II 2011 EN

) eyevis inFoRMAtion

As previously mentioned, practically the only fault source in the heat pipe system is a malfunction of one or more fans, which would not stop the heat pipe from maintaining heat transfer itself. We simulated a complete fan-malfunction in our tests and measured the temperatures of each LED at different intensities. Fig. 1 shows on the left the temperatures of the individual LEDs at 100 % intensity with fully functioning fans. The temperature of the individual LEDs remains clearly far below the permitted limit (dotted lines). The other bars in Fig. 1 show the temperature of the individual LEDs with all fans switched off and an LED intensity of 40 %, 60 % and 80 %. With LED intensity between 40 % and 60 %, the cooling effect of the heat pipe alone is sufficient to maintain LED temperature within specifications. It is only with an 80 % LED intensity that the green LED reaches the limit, at which point life expectancy begins to fall. The automatic reduction of the LEDs on our projectors to 70 % intensity in case of a fan-malfunction there-fore enables the LEDs to continue functioning within the norms.

We also tested the reliability of our heat pipes with progressively higher ambient temperature, as could happen, for example, if the air conditioning in the room broke down. The diagram shows that even with an ambient temperature rise of over 40 °C, the LEDs can function within their specifications.

Fig. 3-5 show the relationship between LED life expectancy and working temperature. As you can see, a temperature raise over the Tmax specified for each LED in Fig. 2 leads relatively quickly to a fall of life expectancy below 60,000 hours. However, if we compare this with the other figures, we see that, even in the case of a fan-malfunction, the heat pipe cooling system of eyevis LED cubes maintains temperature within the necessary norms for a 60,000-hour life expectancy.

We insist: For us the best cooling system is simple, failsafe and effective. Heatpipes – what else!

Touch technology – Revolution or Entertainment?

touch controlled

n Touch technology has now found a broad audience thanks to the Apple iPhone, the Microsoft Surface and many other so-called smartphones and tablet-PCs. The possibilities are fascinating – mainly in the entertainment sector. Will this type of device control revolutionise the world of information electronics? The fundamental idea of touch technologies, which has been developed since 1982, is the so-called man-machine-interaction. Behind this approach, there is initially the operation of technical devices by people with the aid of operating elements of any kind. Touch systems follow the approach to reduce as far as possible the use of conventional input devices such as key-boards, mouse or graphic tablets. Almost all interaction with the computer are to be made via a touch-sensitive surface.

As the English name already implies, a touch screen is a monitor which is controlled by touching individual parts of the screen. Similar to a computer mouse which uses

the cursor to go to parts of the screen and commands are given by clicking, the touch screen carries out commands by direct touch of the screen.

Touch technology is usually split into three categories: single, dual and multi touch.

Single TouchAs the name already implies, the input device is controlled using and one finger or stylus for single touch screens. This means that only one point of contact can be recognised and processed. Single touch versions are for example often used in media controls, POS (Points of Sales) and navigation models.

Dual TouchA dual touch screen is able to recognise and process two independent fingers or stylus. The probably most well-known interaction is the turning and zooming in on images using two fingers. If two fingers move towards each other the image gets smaller.

If they move away from each other, the picture gets bigger. Using a circle movement of two fingers, you can turn pictures. The most well-known use of dual touch is e.g. the Apple iPhone.

Multi TouchA multi touch screen has the ability to recognise more than three independent fingers or stylus which are active simulta-neously on the touch screen. Multi touch is reasonably used on large scale displays on which several users control applications simultaneously. Multi touch screens can recognise independently and at the same time up to 32 points of contact.

Page 21: eyevis - eyevision II 2011 EN

) eyevis inFoRMAtion

Resistive technologyResistive touch screens have a flexible top layer made from polyester and a rigid base layer made from glass which are separated from each other by a non-conducting spacer. The two separated surfaces are each covered with a transparent conducting layer. A voltage applied to the conducting layers creates a voltage gradient.

By touching the flexible top layer an electric contact is created between both layers and hence registering the touch. The analysis of the data is carried out by the controller. The input can be made using a range of media such as fingers, stylus, glove etc.

Capacitive technologyCapacitive touch screens are coated glass substrates coated with transparent metal oxide. A voltage applied to the corners of the coating creates an exact, even electric field. When touching with a finger a low charge transport occurs which is measured as a current in the corners during the

discharge cycle. The resulting currents from the corners are in direct relation to the touch position. The entry can only be carried out using a conducting object.

SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave) technology Acoustic-Wave touch sensors use signallers which are mounted to the side surfaces of the glass substrate. These signallers send ultrasonic waves from two sides across the display (horizontally and vertically). These waves are reflected by the surface and received by a sensor on the opposite side. A finger or other soft medium absorbs a part of the acoustic energy and the controller measures the change of the amplitude of the ultrasonic waves and uses the information to calculate the position of the point of contact. The input can be made using a range of media such as fingers, stylus, glove etc. Infra-red technologyThe principle of infra-red touch sensors is based on infra-red LEDs which are integrated in the frame of the plate and

opposing IR-receivers. The touch surface is thus covered with infra-red light. When touching the surface the light of individual IR-diodes is interrupted and the system can hence recognise and analyse the activated point. The input can be made using a range of media such as fingers, stylus, glove etc.

Optical technologyThe principle of optical sensors is based on a frame which is fitted with IR-LEDs. This frame is fitted to all sides of the display. The touch surface is thus covered with light. 2 or 4 optical sensors are placed in the corners depending on the system. The light is inter- rupted when touched with a finger and the sensors recognise a change in the signal. A clever algorithm is used to process the data, to filter the signal and to deduct background interference.

Truck-Driving Simulator by SiFat and eyevis

n Safety on German roads is an ever current topic and is increasingly important

considering the country’s growing traffic density. The Firma

Sicherheit und Fahrtraining, aka SiFat, has, in partnership with eyevis,

installed a truck-driving simulator in Berlin for further and better training of truck-drivers. We are proud to do our bit for greater safety with this first truck simulation showroom by eyevis.

The simulator is composed mainly of a stan-dard truck cabin mounted on a moving platform by means of support cylinders. The platform carries out the pitching and rolling motions of the cabin as well as slight longitudinal and lateral acceleration as rea-listically and as near the respective driving conditions as possible.

Through the front and side windows, the driver looks out onto a 210° projection surface with a photographic representation

Page 25: eyevis - eyevision II 2011 EN

) eyevis innovAtions

of the area through which the vehicle is currently „driving“. The projected image changes continually and is synchronised with the direction and speed of the truck.

The rear view mirrors are replaced by TFT screens composed of two main mirrors as well an extra wide-angle mirror on the driver‘s side. An image generator makes different traffic routes available such as inner-city driving, highways or motorways.

Driving Training and Greater Knowledge without DangerThe driving simulator presents scenes based on the principle of rear projection, which means that the projection beam hits the canvas from the side averted from the viewer. The 210° viewing angle is arranged asymmetrically around the cabin, which allows the driver to both look over their

shoulder and see out of the right-hand cabin window. The database software can be programmed for different weather and light conditions, autopilot and stressors in the simulated environment. In addition to the visual impressions, noise simulations can also be generated for motor and tyre noise, airstreams and other realistic external noises. Comparative tests of acceptance, accessibility of the vehicle‘s controls and intuitiveness of use, as well as of ergonomics and the interior design can be carried out in the driving simulator. You can therefore test, amongst others, how acoustic, optical and haptic warnings are perceived and how they lead to intuitive reactions.

The Technology Behind It AllThere are four projectors from the eyevis ESP series installed in the simulator.

The ESP-SXT-150-0.6 has a SXGA+ resolution of 1400 x 1050 pixels. All projectors components are specified for continuous use and have proven their reliability in numerous installations around the world. The robust construction with a stable metal enclosure allows the use of highly vibratory environ-ments and simulations of movement. Furthermore, the simulator has four openWARP2 channels. With the successful second generation of eyevis warping, blending and colour correction technology, it is possible to project any image content on any surface using any projector.

If you are interested, we would be happy to make an appointment with you, so you can see the impressively realistic simulator for yourself.

Perfect Interplay:openWARP2 and high performance projectors from the eyevis ESP series

Based on the proven technology of the eyevis EC cube series, the projectors have long been known for their excellent image quality and outstanding robustness. They are available with conventional UHP projector lamps or with new LED technology. All components of the projectors are specified for continuous use.

This, together with the stable metal enclosure and a range of optional extensions, makes eyevis ESP projectors the first choice for virtual reality with openWARP2.

More Transparency in Roman Public Transport

eyevis and the „Centrale della Mobilità“

) eyevis ReFeRenCes

n The Rome Agency Services Mobility was created as part of AtacSpA (Agenzia del trasporto autoferrotranviario del Comune di Roma), the Roman public transport company in order to fulfil several integrative functions. It deals with joint planning and control as well as with presenting effective information on both public and private mobility. The aim is to give local residents a better understanding of the different transport options.

The agency‘s essential duties involve projects and network planning of public transport whether by road or rail, developing and introducing changes in the road and rail networks, studying and recording transport and flows of private goods, road safety and establishing rules for the definition and evolution of private mobility (prohibitions etc.).

The agency‘s activities will be guided by the mobility services‘ direct management with an emphasis on achieving common goals.

For example: ) innovative and more effective solutions for mobility ) improving customer relations,) pointing to environmentally friendly means of transport for a better quality of life

Control is the key– eyevis‘ video wallAs a part of this project, eyevis set up a new video wall in the control room that goes by the illustrious name of „Central della Mobilità“ It plays a fundamental role for the integrated management of public and private mobility in the Italian capital. The emphasis is on finding tools and solutions to enable a progressive improvement of living standards and thereby respect the safety of the citizens and protect the environment.

Central Mobility has an open, modular and expandable structure, based on two levels of control: A supervisor and the central system on the first level with a logic of distributed intelligence into peripheral equipment. The ITS (Intelligent Transport System) of this

level supports the regulation of the urban road network and should lead to greater efficiency and sustainability of the flow of traffic in Rome.

The second level includes the main system, that is, the sensors that measure the flow of traffic and travel times, the video sur-veillance cameras, traffic light installations, electronic cabinets for special areas etc. This system uses different communication channels that enable real-time information and therefore significantly improve mobility for the inhabitants of Rome

TechnologyFor the video wall in the control room, eyevis installed twelve EC-50-XT-CP-DL-cubes and a NPX-3812R-V16-D4-IP24-G2.3-controller.

The video walls of eyevis in the National Commercial Bank in Saudi Arabian The first bank founded in Saudi-Arabia – and until today one of the most financially sound financial institutes in the Middle East – relies on eyevis technology. In April 2010, the NBC commissioned eyvis to install a video wall for the efficient network monitoring of the bank in the headquarters in Jeddah. The concept of the installation is based on the eyevis back projection cubes which score with a double lamp system and high-resolution images in highest quality.

In concrete terms this means: unsurpassed sharpness, high-contrast display with the best brightness and colour uniformity. A further advantage for the eyevis Cubes is the very wide viewing angle. Brightness control and colour adjustments can be re-adjusted and are ideal in any situation.

The NCB chose the following execution model: EC-67-SXT-CP-DL with a screen diagonal of 67“, a SXGA+-resolution of 1400 x 1050 pixel and a frame of 0.3 mm. This almost „frameless“ design means that eyevis back projection cubes can be

aligned almost seamlessly. The NCB video wall is one large screen which consists of 9x2 Cubes. An eyevis Netpix controller takes on the operation of the video wall. It provides the necessary inputs for the connected signal sources and reproduces the individual signals on a coherent image area. An eyevis eyecon wall management software has also been installed to connect video sources. An eyevis ECS-800-G1.0 eyecon control server was also installed to ensure fast access and a high degree of reliability for the big screen.

With this eyevis complete system, NCP now has a system designed specifically for continuous operation with absolutely reliable display technology.

n The ISE Integrated Systems Europe in Amsterdam is one of the largest exhibitions for professional AV-system integration and electronic integration for commercial and residential buildings. An absolute must for companies that want to play in the premier league. And that is the reason why eyevis takes the utmost care to have the best possible quality of presentation for this important trade-show. But how exactly did this tradeshow stand unique in its size in eyevis history come into being?

ArrivalFriday, 12.00 pm in Amsterdam: The stand builder is on site and has already put down the raised floor, so that the cables can run underneath the floor. The first steel frame-work is up. In the next few hours the floor cover will be laid – laminate and carpet – and further Octanorm frameworks will be put up in order to clad those later with MDF-panels. At the same time, the eyevis technicians are waiting for the equipment which is to be supplied by the freight for-warder and is brought directly to the stand by the on-site distributors. Furthermore, a lifting ramp is collected which has been rented to mount the higher up display walls – especially for the archways – and the eyevis technicians start installing the first exhibit wall.

The tradeshow stand is taking shapeThe first archway is clad on the second instal- lation day. At the same time, the substructure and the cubes are mounted into the Octanorm- framework and the first cut-outs are made into the MDF cladding in order to fit the Touch-Cubes (EC-67-LHD-CP-Touch-4).

On Sunday the archway is completely clad, so that the mounting work of the 14 stack frames for the EYE-LCD-4600SN can begin using the lifting ramp. Wall holders and stack frames are mounted on the already clad walls in order to fit the LCDs in the next installation step. All walls are then painted according to the colour information of the corporate design. Naturally, the already installed display walls or wall holders were masked prior to painting. Meanwhile, the network cables are laid and the first computers are put into their places to connect the first graphic cards.

High pressure right to the endOn the last fitting day, the stack frames of the first archway are fitted and the installation of the 14 EYE-LCD-4600SN can commence. Hand in hand with the stand builder the walls are reinforced from the inside after determining the placement in order to fit on the outside further wall holders for the LCDs to fit additional LCDs.

The first sources are connected to the display walls and so the tradeshow stand slowly takes shape. At the same time the LCD-Bar made up from 6 EYE-LCD-4600SN and the Cubes are aligned, which is no easy task due to the outside temperature of -6° C since the eyevis stand is located at the end of the hall and the gate located there is open during the entire set up time. This caused the plates of the Cubes to distort slightly, which is not ideal for the geometric adjustments.

Once all walls are clad, the smaller archway can be fitted by the stand builder, whereupon the eyevis technicians can mount further 7 stack frames and EYE-LCD-4600SN.

Then, after the gate has been closed after 8.00 pm and the cold is no longer spreading quite so badly, the final touches can be carried out. The Cubes are finely adjusted, the content is connected everywhere, the kitchen utensils are unpacked, the marketing equipment is put in place and the signage and eyevis logos also found their home in coordination with the stand builder.

Finally, we could see once more what kind of incredible skill is required to build a tradeshow stand and that the work in close coordination with the stand builder is an absolute must. The logistical challenges have to be figured out in order to prevent stepping on each others toes during the work. This is the only way to ensure that the required equipment is in the right place at the right time. Also the very limited space – especially the limited floor space of the entire pallets and empty packaging – is a real challenge.

But all hurdles were overcome successfully due to the long-standing experience of the eyevis technicians with regards to tradeshow set up and the previous multiple cooperations with this stand builder.

At the end of a long and cold set up phase, we could admire a very successful tradeshow stand and look forward to the 3 tradeshow days.

Technical feat9 eyevis technicians installed a total of 57 LCDs and 13 Cubes in the shortest time. We would like to say thank to all those involved for their excellent achievement.

This is how the largest tradeshow stand of all time in the history of eyevis was created

n The security control room of IBM Italia SpA in the Upper Italian town of Segrate in close proximity to Milan is one of the most important hubs for the internal IBM infrastructure. This makes us even more proud that IBM Italy decided to choose eyevis when they came to renew the video wall in the control room. The control room in Segrate is the main hub for the control and video surveillance for both main centres in Milan and Rome but also for all other subsidiaries in Italy. The video signal of all surveillance cameras and all access control is bundled here – as well as other security relevant signals such as the monitoring of lifts and fire detection.

IBM Italy decided to upgrade this important video wall and its management with eyevis technology. The implemented solution is based on a 3x2 arrangement with the new EYE-LCD-4600-SN modules with a very narrow frame of only 7.3 mm distance from pixel to pixel between the individual screens. This allows an extremely homoge-neous image display across the entire video wall which in turn reduces interferences of the displayed content due to interruptions caused by the front frame to a minimum.

Simple and intuitiveA NPX3800R graphics controller with redun- dancy system for high operational safety is used for the wall management. The con-troller processes a total of 32 video and 12

analogue DVI inputs. This enables a simple, intuitive and comfortable management of the information signals from the different IBM locations. An additional plasma display in the IBM crisis centre could be connected thanks to the trendsetting controller from the Netpix-3800er range. The multi wall function allows the operation and control of these displays like an additional video wall which shows the IBM staff the entire input of the controller. And all this without interference to the ongoing operation in the control room.

Tailor-made securityAll in all, the responsible operator has complete control over the entire video wall in combination with the components of the wall management software EYECON V4 which was localised to Italian. Inclusive of the individual arrangement of the image scenarios, the video sources and applications simply by drag-and-drop or very comfortably using relevant short cuts in a solution which has been tailor-made to IBM‘s requirements.

IBM‘s Security Manager:

„We are extremely satisfied with our decision for an eyevis video wall. The company has proven to be a responsible partner of whom you can expect professional solutions with a high degree of additional benefits. We were specifically impressed with the high quality of all components. And the speed, with which

the entire system has been installed was also a positive surprise. This after all ensured that there was only a short operational interruption in the control room which is of utmost importance to IBM. The eyevis crew has demonstrated their great skills and abilities during the entire time of the fine tuning. And Fabrizio Ponzo, the Technical Director of eyevis Srl., commented the installation with the following words:

„The technical solution chosen by IBM Italy represents the current state of the art for LCD video wall applications. A special configuration tailor-made for IBM‘s requi-rements was needed with a structure that would include both the ad hoc creation of the video wall within the control room itself but also enable the management of a further display in the crisis centre. We were able to implement this due to the extreme flexibility of our technical solutions. As a side note, this flexibility is also a feature which distinguishes us within the market and which has proven to be very successful at this occasion - without any deviation of the originally suggested technical configuration.

On behalf of the Italian eyevis team I would like to emphasize that we are extremely proud with this work and the resulting positive feedback by IBM Italia SpA.“
