    C A U T I O N : The See Clearly Method includes various eye exercises and the use of an eye patch; it also ad-vocates progressive undercorrection, that is, the use of a weaker prescription producing slightly blurredvision in order to strengthen the eyes. Use an eye patch or undercorrected prescription only when reading,watching television, or doing other safe activities. Do not use an eye patch or do eye exercises, or usean undercorrected prescription while driving a motor vehicle, using power tools, going up or downstairs, or engaging in any other potentially dangerous activity or any other activity that requires depthperception or clear vision. Whenever weaker lenses are used, they should provide at least 20/40acuity in each eye. Do not use a weaker prescription unless your eye doctor confirms that you can seewell enough to do so safely. Do not touch the eyes or the region surrounding the eyes with long or sharpfingernails, and do not use excessively hot water for hydrotherapy.

    Likewise, since the See Clearly Method is intended to improve vision, you should take precautionsfrom time to time to ensure that your glasses or contacts are still suitable for driving, using powertools, going up or down stairs, or engaging in any other potentially dangerous activity that requires clearvision.

    The See Clearly Method is designed to improve nearsightedness, farsightedness, presbyopia, astigma-tism, and eyestrain. Under no circumstances should it be used as a substitute for the medical treatmentof serious eye disease such as cataract, macular or retinal degeneration, or glaucoma. If you suffer fromone of these conditions or any other eye disease, you should use the See Clearly Method only under thesupervision of an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

    Normal, Healthy Eyes: Your Birthright

    The good news is, almost all babies are born with perfectly normal, healthy eyes. If you could see well as achild, chances are your eyeballs are not genetically de-

    formed. Un f o rt u n a t e l y, many peopleincluding moste ye doctorsmake the mistake of thinking that poorvision is inherited. Being born with normal, healthy eye smeans that poor vision is not inevitable. Although theaging process eventually catches up with us, there areplenty of elderly people who dont need glasses or hardlye ver wear them. This means that with proper care and at-tention, you can probably keep your eyes healthy and yo u rvision normal for a lifetime. It also means that somethingcan be done to improve your vision if your eyes no longerperform as well as they once did.

    The bad news is that we live in a world in which our eye sa re forced to adapt to conditions for which they are notwell-designed. Long periods of reading and close workwere not common before mass education and mass pro-duction arrived. Mo re re c e n t l y, television and computershave been added to the list of reasons people focus theireyes too close, for too long.

    In fact, the dramatic increase in nearsightedness in Americahas been linked to the rapid rise in mass education andtelevision viewing from the 1950s onward. Before masseducation and television, a persons eyes alternated fre-quently between close-up focus and distant viewing inthe course of daily life. In this way the eyes we re exe rc i s e dconstantly and did not become strained.

    Sustained, close-up focus, such as reading or working ata computer, has been shown to be significantly stre s s f u lto the body, as measured by heart rate, blood pre s s u re ,muscle tension in the neck and upper back, and by gal-vanic skin response. The bodys response to sustained,close-up focus is called nearpoint stre s s and can triggerp rocesses that ultimately lead to a change in the physi-cal stru c t u re of the eye. In fact, nearpoint stress can re s u l tin the development of visual conditions like myopia (near-

    sightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism(elongation of the eyeball), or combinations of each. T h i sprocess is only now beginning to be understood in spiteof the amount of re s e a rch conducted on these types ofchanges. Additional reactions to sustained, close-up focuscan include a reduction of normal blinking and reducedtear fluid formation. The resulting symptoms of this near-point stress can also include blurred vision, double vision,eyestrain, headaches, and sore or dry eyes.

    But re m e m b e r, despite the challenges of living and work i n gin todays high-pre s s u re world, you probably began lifewith normal, healthy eyes. The See Clearly Method willhelp you exe rcise your eyes so they function the way natureintendedand will help offset the effects of activities thatoverload the visual system.

    Whats Wrong With This Picture?

    The response of most eye doctors to rising levels of poorvision has been to continue compensating for these re-f r a c t i ve conditions with eyeglasses. Measuring eye s i g h tand providing c o r re c t i ve lenses (glasses and contactlenses) has become the standard vision care service. If wea re concerned with appearance, we are offered contactlenses, which provide a natural looking alternative toglasses. And lately, if we want to avoid the bother of con-tacts, we can opt for laser surgery, which reshapes thecornea itself. So whats wrong with this picture?

    W h a ts wrong is that none of these things fixes the re a lp roblem, the changes that accompany nearpoint stre s sand the aging process. At best, they temporarily fix thesymptoms, not the problem itself. Even the term c o r-re c t i ve lenses is misleading. What c o r re c t i ve lenses dois manipulate the light entering the eyes in order to allowus to see clearly. They compensate for the symptoms butthey do not cure or correct the underlying problem. In

    fact, c o r re c t i ve lenses can actually increase nearpoints t ress, which contributes to the eventual need for a stro n g e rp rescription. Instead of curing the underlying pro b l e m ,they usually make it worse. So, using glasses or contactsin this way does nothing for the health of your eyes. T h e ya re a crutch that enables you to get by. And as with a cru t c h ,you may become more dependent on glasses as your eye sbecome weaker.

    We Can Do Better

    For most people, settling for a chronically weak or de-generating body is not an appealing idea. We all want ourbodies to be healthy and stay healthy. Cert a i n l y, exc e p tfor people who have incurable diseases and injuries, fewpeople would passively accept a condition that compro-mises their ability to function and enjoy life, or forc e sthem to be dependent on crutches forever.

    Most branches of the medical profession now acknow l-edge the role of nutrition and exe rcise in maintaininggood health. Un f o rt u n a t e l y, this outlook has been slowto gain acceptance among members of the eye care pro-fession. The average eye doctor has been trained only top rescribe c o r re c t i ve lenses, drugs, or surgery and haslittle or no experience with natural methods of vision im-p rovement. And most eye doctors are unaware of thesizable body of professional literature and re s e a rc ha vailable on natural vision improvement. So it is up toe ye doctors who really understand the specific techniquesfor improving the health of our eyes naturally to lead theway.

    A l ready this is happening. T h e re are approximately 3,000optometrists in the United States who share our beliefthat there are environmental factors that affect your visionand that poor vision can be addressed through a va r i e t yof approaches, including eye exe rcises. They believe these

    Whenever possible, remove your glasses or contactswhile doing the exercise sessions.*

    The See Clearly Method will give your eyes a good basicw o rkout. We all know that working out the body, eve na moderate amount of exe rcise, will make you stro n g e rand healthier. The same principle applies to the eyes. Byf o l l owing the techniques in this program, your eyes aregoing to feel a lot stro n g e r, a lot healthier, and a lotmore relaxed.

    The specific exe rcises outlined in this section (and demon-strated on the Exe rcise Videos) have been developed tohelp give your eyes exactly what they need to increase theirnatural focusing power and ability to function properly.The exercises fall into several different groups:

    Focusing exe rcises: These exe rcises are designed to improvethe eye s ability to focus on both close-up and distantobjects.

    Range of motion exe rc i s e s : These exe rcises are designedto put the eye muscles through a full range of motionon a regular basis, which many people do not do.

    Relaxation exe rc i s e s :These exe rcises are designed to re l a xand promote the flow of nutrients to the entire eye re g i o n .

    Eye teaming exe rcises: These exe rcises are designed toi m p rove the teamwork and coordination between theeyes.

    You'll really enjoy these exe rcises because they'll makeyour eyes feel a lot better and increase your focusing powe r.

    Exercise PrinciplesUnless otherwise noted, when doing the exe rcises yo ushould:

    1. Remove your glasses or contacts.

    You will get the maximum benefit if you do the exe rc i s e swithout your c o r re c t i ve lenses on. Howe ve r, if you feelu n c o m f o rtable without your glasses or contacts on, itsbetter to do the exe rcises wearing them than to not do theexercises at all.

    S A F E TY R E M I N D E R : Do not re m ove glasses or contactsor do eye exe rcises while driving a motor vehicle, using

    p ower tools, going up or down stairs, or engaging in any other potentially dangerous activity or any other activity that re q u i re sclear eyesight.

    2. Relax and dont strain.

    When doing the See Clearly Method techniques, you maynot be able to do them exactly as demonstrated. This isokay. Its just like exercising your body. When you begingetting in shape, you may not be able to touch your toesat firstbut you will still benefit from gently stretchingas far as you can, and over time you will gain greater flex-i b i l i t y. Because stress can have a negative impact on yo u rvision, straining to do the See Clearly Method techniqueswill only get in the way of the results you would like toachieve.

    3. Remember to breathe easily.

    While doing each exe rcise, remember to breathe. Althoughit may seem obvious, sometimes while doing the exe rc i s-es you can get so focused on what yo ure doing that yo uforget to breathe.

    PumpingWhat you do. Rhythmically change focus back and fort hbetween a near object and a far object, briefly looking atthe smallest detail you can see on each object.

    B e n e f i t s . Pumping exe rcises the focusing mechanism andimproves control of the extraocular muscles.

    How to do it:

    Step 1. Choose a near object. Use your finger, thumb,pen, trinket, or piece of jewe l ry. Hold it no more than sixinches away from your face.

    Step 2. Choose a far object. Use something across theroom, such as a painting or doork n o b, or something yo ucan see out a window, such as a tree, building, or trafficlight. This object should be as far away from you as pos-sible, yet you should just be able to see some detail in theobject. We recommend using an object at least 15 feetaway, but the distance can be less.

    Step 3. Keep the near object stationary.

    Step 4. Change focus eve ry couple of seconds:near far near far near far near

    Step 5. At the end of each changeof focus, look at the smallest detailyou can see on the object. Fo rexample, if your thumb is the nearobject, look at a crease of skin or a

    many small details to avoid boredom. Or you can use thesmall Word Chart as the near object and the large WordChart as the far object.

    Step 6. Blink frequently and select a different detail eachtime you change focus.

    Ad vanced. O ver time, as you practice this exe rc i s e ,hold the near object closer and closer. The goal is to con-tinually challenge your ability to see detail as you changefocus.

    Troubleshooting.

    People who have c o n vergence pro b l e m s (difficultyturning the eyes inward or crossing them) may get headachesf rom Pumping. If you feel a headache developing, im-mediately close your eyes, breathe slowly and deeply, andwait for it to go away. Then resume Pumping. If theheadache returns, close your eyes again and breathe slow l yand deeply. Repeat the cycle, trying to extend your Pu m p i n gby a few seconds each time. In this way, you can quicklyw o rk your way through the problem until you can do thee xe rcise without discomfort. An extra benefit of ove r-coming conve r g e n c e - related headaches is that you mayexperience an increase in reading speed and/or eliminatemotion sickness.

    TromboningWhat you do. Sl owly move a small object back and fort hin time to your breathing, from arms length to the tipof your nose, like a musician playing a trombone.

    Benefits. Tromboning exe rcises the focusing mechanismand the convergence or binocular (eye-teaming) system,which also improves control of the extraocular muscles.Besides working each system by itself, you will be work i n gthe fine coordination between the focusing and eye - t e a m i n gsystems.

    How to do it:

    Step 1. Hold a small object such as a finger, thumb, pen,trinket or piece of jewe l ry in fro n tof you at arms length.

    Step 2. Bre a t h es l owly and deeply.

    Step 3. As yo uinhale, bring theobject tow a rd yo uuntil it touches the tipof your nose. Try to keepit in focus for as long as pos-sible. Try to keep it as a singleimage as you bring it closer toyour nose. If it breaks up intotwo separate images move the object back out until yo ucan get the image single again. As you continue to workon this increase your concentration to keep the objectsolid, single, and clear all the way in towards your nose.

    Step 4. As you exhale, look at the object as you take it outto arms length.

    Ad vanced. As you become more comfortable doingthis exercise, begin to shift your attention to seeing howa w a re you are of the room around you as you move theobject in and out. The more of the entire room you canbe aware of, the more you will be doing the activitywith the type of relaxation that allows you to use your eye smost effectively and efficiently.

    Tro u b l e s h o o t i n g . As with Pumping, people who haveconvergence problems may get headaches from Trom-boning. If you feel a headache developing, immediatelyclose your eyes, breathe slowly and deeply, and wait for itto go away. Then resume Tromboning. If the headachereturns, close your eyes again and breathe slowly andd e e p l y. Repeat the cycle, trying to extend your Tro m-boning by a few seconds each time. In this way, you canquickly work your way through the problem until yo ucan do the exercise without discomfort. An extra benefitof ove rcoming conve r g e n c e - related headaches is that yo umay experience an increase in reading speed and/or elim-inate motion sickness.

    Clock RotationsS A F E TY REMINDER: If yo ure prone to motionsickness, Clock Rotations may make you dizzy. In

    case of dizziness, cover your eyes with your hands and dothe exe rcises with eyes open underneath. Or, you can closeyour eyes and breathe slowly and deeply until the dizzi-ness goes away. Then open the eyes and do some moreClock Rotations. Continue this cycle, each time try i n gto extend the exercise by a few seconds. In this way, youwill quickly work your way through the problem and beable to do Clock Rotations without any discomfort. Also,occasionally people see flashes of light when they movetheir eyes to an extreme position of gaze too fast. If thishappens, simply move your eyes more slowly.

    What you do. Alternately stretch your eye muscles to thehour positions of a large, imaginary clock and then re t u r nthe eyes to the center of the clock.

    B e n e f i t s . Clock Rotations improve control of the ex-traocular muscles and increase their range of motion.

    How to do it:

    Step 1. Imagine you are in front of a giant clock, lookingat its center.

    Step 2. Move your eyes as far as theywill go in the 9 oclock d i rection. Try to do this by mov i n gonly your eyes. Holding your chinin place will help you keep yo u rhead and shoulders motionless.Do this without creating tensionin your neck muscles. Rather, you wantto do this exe rcise with free and easy eye movements only.

    Step 3.Stretch your eye muscles for a couple of seconds,as though you are trying to see your left ear.

    Step 4. Return to the center of the clock.

    Step 5. Next, move your eyes as far as they will go in the10 oclock direction; stretch for a couple of seconds; thenreturn to the center of the clock.

    Step 6. Repeat the exe rcise for each hour position on theclock face.

    Ad vanced. Another excellent variation of Clock Ro t a-tions is to do opposite clock positions for some of thee xe rcise period (for example, 9 to 3, 10 to 4, 11 to 5, etc.)and then reverse the direction and go around again (i.e.,3 to 9, 4 to 10, 5 to 11, etc.). It will require some mentalfocus, but this is part of helping you get greater contro lover the visual system.

    Troubleshooting. Some people get headaches from ClockRotations. If you feel a headache developing, immedi-ately close your eyes, breathe slowly and deeply, and waitfor it to go away. Then resume Clock Rotations. If theheadache returns, close your eyes again and breathe slow l yand deeply. Repeat the cycle, trying to extend your ClockRotations by a few seconds each time. In this way, yo ucan quickly work your way through the problem untilyou can do the exercise without discomfort.

    NOTE: Aim for slow, con-trolled move m e n t s ,with a good stretchin each position. Ifa particular posi-tion (e.g., 9 oclock ,10, 11) is difficult,gently work on itmore until it is aseasy as the otherpositions.

    Eye RollsS A F E TY REMINDER: If yo ure prone to motionsickness, Eye Rolls can make you dizzy. In case

    of dizziness, cover your eyes with your hands and do thee xe rcises with your eyes open underneath. Or, you canclose your eyes and breathe slowly and deeply until thedizziness goes away. Then open your eyes and do somemore Eye Rolls. Continue this cycle, each time trying toextend the exe rcise by a few seconds. In this way, you willquickly work your way through the problem and be ableto do Eye Rolls without any discomfort.

    What you do. Slowly roll your eyes in a complete circle.

    B e n e f i t s . Eye Rolls improve control of the extraocularmuscles and increase their range of motion.

    How to do it:

    Step 1. Holding your head still, slowly roll your eyes in acomplete circle a few times in one direction.

    Step 2. Keep your eye muscles fully stretched at all times,aiming for slow, smooth rotations. It may help to imaginethat your gaze is following a slowly moving object in alarge circular pattern. For example, imagine that yo ua re tracking the movement of a ferris wheel or a secondhand on a large clock.

    Step 3. Slowly roll your eyes in the other direction.

    Step 4. Change direction eve ry few rotations. You canalso do partial circles.

    Step 5. If you have difficulty at a particular position orp o rtion of the circle, gently work on it until it is as smoothand easy as other portions of the circle.

    Troubleshooting. Some people get headaches fro mEye Rolls. If you feel a headache developing, immediate-ly close your eyes, breathe slowly and deeply, and wait forit to go away.     BlinkingWhat you do. Look at a small detail on a blurred objectwhile opening and shutting the eyes.

    B e n e f i t s . The three Blinking techniques reduce visualstress and stimulate the normal function of your eyelids.The eyelids clean and lubricate the surface of the eye andsecrete nutrients that help keep the cornea healthy.

    How to do it:

    Fast Blinking.

    S A F E TY REMINDER: Do nt do Fast Blinking if you suffer from epilepsy.

    Step 1. Look at a slightly blurred object. If yo ure near-sighted, look at a far object. If yo ure farsighted or pre s byo p i c ,look at a near object.

    Step 2. Take a deep breath and focus on the smallest detailyou can see on the blurred object.

    Step 3. As you exhale, open and close your eyes as quicklyas possible while you slowly blow out all the air from yo u rlungs. This should be done without focusing on any object.

    Step 4. As you inhale, again look at the smallest detailyou can see on the blurred object.

    Step 5. Continue to fast blink in time to your bre a t h i n g :exhale/fast blink inhale/detail exhale/fast blinkinhale/detail

    Slow Blinking.

    Step 1. Look at a slightly blurred object. If yo ure near-sighted, look at a far object. If yo ure farsighted or pre s byo p i c ,look at a near object.

    Step 2. Take a deep breath and look at the smallest detailyou can see on the blurred object.

    Step 3. Close your eyes, and as you exhale, relax, ands l owly blow out all the air from your lungs, while re p e a t-ing the word relax mentally or out loud.

    Step 4. As you inhale, look at the smallest detail yo ucan see on the blurred object.

    Step 5. Continue to slow blink in time to your bre a t h-ing: inhale/detail exhale/eyes closed inhale/detail

    Squeeze Blinking.

    Step 1. Look at something slightly blurred. If yo ure near-sighted, look at a far object. If yo ure farsighted or pre s byo p i c ,look at a near object.

    Step 2. Close your eyes and hug your eyeballs with yo u rupper and lower lids, isolating the eye muscles, and holdto a count of three. Make sure you dont scrunch up theforehead muscles or the muscles around the eyes.

    Step 3. Open your eyes wide and look at the smallest detailyou can see on the blurred object; then do a few normalblinks.

    Step 4. Continue the sequence: squeeze shutopen/seedetail squeeze shut open/see detail squeeze shut open/see detail

    Blur ZoningWhat you do. Look with a calm, steady gaze at edges anddetails of objects in your blur zone, the area of yo u rvision where things become fuzzy and unclear.

    Benefits. The two variations of Blur Zoning, Edging andCentering, sharpen your vision by improving your abilityto see small details.

    How to do it:

    Find an interesting object with plenty of small details andput it at a distance where its slightly blurred. A plant isgood for this exercise.

    Edging.

    Step 1. With a calm, steady gaze, slowly move your eyesand carefully follow the edges of a blurred flower or leaf,studying its main outlines.

    Step 2. Repeat the procedure with other blurred flowersor leaves.

    Step 3. Blink from time to time so your eyes dont becomed ry, and experiment with Fast Blinking (page 17) andSqueeze Blinking (page 18) as you follow the edges.

    NOTE: Some people donth ave a clear zone(an area where theirvision is clear), i.e., people with m o d e rate to highastigmatism orsome presbyo p i cpeople with mod-e rate to highfarsightedness. Ifyou fall in this cat-e g o r y, you shouldconsider the clearzone to be the areaof your vision thatis least blurred.

    Centering.

    Step 1. Look at the smallest detail you can see, such as atiny vein or pore on a plant.

    Step 2. With a calm steady gaze, slowly run your eye saround its edge and try to see its exact shape.

    Step 3. Next, try to see smaller and smaller details withinthe detail you are looking at. Continue examining smallerdetails until they are too small to see.

    Step 4. As with edging, above, blink from time to timeso your eyes dont become dry, and experiment withFast Blinking (page 17) and Squeeze Blinking (page 18)as you follow the edges.

    Nose FusionWhat you do. Sl owly inhale and cross your eyes by lookingat the tip of your nose. Then exhale and look at a far object.

    B e n e f i t s . Nose Fusion can improve control of the ex-traocular muscles and help your eyes work together as ateam.

    How to do it:

    Step 1. Breathe slowly and deeply.

    Step 2. As you inhale, cross your eyes by looking at thetip of your nose. The goal is to see both sides of your noseat the same time.

    Step 3. As you exhale, look at the smallest detail yo ucan see on a distant object and slowly blow all the air outof your lungs.

    Step 4. Continue to cross and uncross your eyes in timeto your breathing: inhale/cross exhale/uncro s s inhale/cross

    NOTE:If you cant do thise x e rcise, do Tr o m-boning (page 11)instead and try tokeep a single imageas close to yo u rnose as possible.Within a few day s ,you should be ableto see both sides ofyour nose at thesame time.

    Fusion ChartWhat you do. Hold the Fusion Chart at arms length andc ross your eyes. Then slowly uncross them so that the facesfuse together to form a central face with a fainter faceon either side.

    Benefits. The Fusion Chart can help your eyes work to-gether as a team and improve your depth perception.

    How to do it:

    Method 1.

    Step 1. Hold the Fusion Chart* at arms length andlook at the top row of faces.

    Step 2. Cross your eyes by looking at the tip of your nose.

    Step 3. Very slowly uncross them. The faces should fusetogether to form a central face with a fainter face on eitherside.

    Step 4. Stabilize the central face by slowly running yourgaze around the sharp points of the nose and eyebrows.

    Step 5. When the central face is completely stable, tryfusing the other two rows of faces. This will require thatyou focus on a point progressively closer to your nose.

    Step 6. When you can do this easily, jump from one rowof fused faces to another. Then slowly move the chartt ow a rd you with the faces fused, until the central facebreaks into two.

    * T h e re are two different sized Fusion Charts in the back of thismanual. You should experiment with the charts and find outwhich size works best for you. As a rule, if you are nearsighted,you should use the larger chart. If you are farsighted or pre s by-opic, you should use the smaller chart. The important thing isthat the chart should be slightly blurred. For example, if yo ua re nearsighted and your blur zone starts at 18 inches, you shouldp robably use the small chart. If your blur zone starts at 40 inches,you should probably use the large chart.

    NOTE:If you are unable toget the faces to fuset o g e t h e r, dontwo r r y. This is an e x e rcise that manypeople initially arenot able to do p e r f e c t l y. If yo uh ave difficulty, dothe exercise as bestyou can. Over timeit will becomeeasier as you gaingreater control ove ryour eyes. TryMethod 2 on then ext page. A n o t h e roption if yo u r ehaving difficulty isto substitute Tr o m-boning (p. 11).

    Method 2.

    (Try this if you cant do Method 1. Once yo ure com-fortable doing Method 2, try to do Method 1 again.)

    Step 1. Hold the Fusion Chart at arms length and lookat the top row of faces.

    Step 2. Hold a pencil halfway between your eyes and thechart, and focus your gaze on the pencil.

    Step 3. When you look at the pencil, the faces should fusetogether in the background. Then remove the pencil.

    Step 4. Stabilize the central face by slowly running yourgaze around the sharp points of the nose and eyebrows.

    Step 5. When the central face is completely stable, tryfusing the other two rows of faces. You can do this by againholding the pencil between your eyes and the chart. Fo c u syour gaze on the pencil, then slowly move it closer to yo u rnose until the faces on another row fuse together in thebackground.

    Step 6. Re m ove the pencil and stabilize the central faceby slowly running your gaze around the sharp points ofthe nose and eyebrows.

    Fusion PumpingWhat you do. Hold the Fusion Chart at arms length andfuse the faces together. Then slowly change focus, backand forth between the fused central face and the smallestdetail you can see on a far object.

    B e n e f i t s . Fusion pumping can increase your focusingpower and help your eyes work together as a team.

    How to do it:

    Step 1. First master the Fusion Chart (page 22).

    Step 2. Fuse the top row of faces on the chart.

    Step 3. When the fused central face is stable, look awayf rom the chart at the smallest detail you can see on a farobject.

    Step 4. Look back at the chart again and fuse the facesagain.

    Step 5. Continue to slowly change focus back and forthb e t ween the fused central face and the smallest detail yo ucan see on the far object: fused central face far object fused central face far object fused central facefar object

    Step 6. When yo uve mastered this, gradually bring theFusion Chart closer and closer to your eyes until you areno longer able to fuse the faces.

    Benefits. Blur Reading can help your eyes work togeth-er as a team.

    How to do it:

    Step 1. Place a magazine upside down at a distance whereit is extremely blurred. If youre nearsighted, put it as faraway as possible. If youre farsighted or presbyopic, holdit about three inches from your eyes, almost touching thetip of your nose.

    Step 2. Look at any word, and slowly run your gaze aro u n dit. Make sure your eyes are converging so you see a singleimage.

    Step 3. If you can see any letters, slowly run your gazearound them, following their exact outline.

    Step 4. Repeat the procedure with other words.

    NOTE:You turn the magazine upsided own so thatinstead of guessingwords from blurredshapes, you pay at-tention to the detailsof the letter shapes.

    Scanning ChartWhat you do. Put the Scanning Chart where it is slight-ly blurred and follow the line from A to B, jumping fro mdot to dot in time to the music.

    Benefits. The Scanning Chart can improve your eye move-ments and help your eyes work together as a team.

    How to do it:Step 1. Place the Scanning Chart* just into your blurzone, so that it is slightly blurred.

    Step 2. St a rting at A rhythmically jump from dot to dotin time to the music on the Exercise Video (Session 1 or2). Look at each dot for about a second; aim for perf e c trhythm.

    Step 3. Each time you do this exercise, rotate the chartsposition and va ry your starting point (A or B) so yo udont memorize the pattern.

    Step 4. Put the Scanning Chart deep into your blur zo n eso that its extremely blurred, as with Blur Reading (page26).

    * T h e re are three different sized Scanning Charts in the back of thismanual. Experiment with the charts and find out which size work sbest for you.     How to do it:Step 1. Place the Word Chart* just into your blur zone,so that it is slightly blurred.

    Step 2. Find the smallest line you can read and then goto the line above it, which is made up of even smallerwords.

    Step 3. Run your calm, steady gaze back and forth alongthis line.

    Step 4. Next, carefully study the outline of one of thewords on the line.

    Step 5. Breathe deeply, and blink from time to time tokeep your eyes moist. Dont hurry, squint, or stare.

    Step 6. When you can read some of the words on this line,go one line higher on the chart, where the words are smaller.

    Step 7. Continue this process (steps 3 thru 6), one line ata time, moving up the chart. If the entire chart clears up,move it deeper into your blur zone.

    Step 3. Massage the entire rim of the eye sockets and surrounding area.

    Step 4. You can increase the stimulation by rapidly tappingthe acupre s s u re points with the tips of your fingers, insteadof massaging them.

    Step 5. Try doing the acupre s s u re variations for longerperiods of time for a more intense effect.

    Light TherapyWhat you do. Sit with your eyes closed, about six inchesaway from a 150-watt light.

    B e n e f i t s . Light therapy can relax your eyes and stimulatethe flow of nutrients to the entire eye region.

    How to do it:

    Step 1. Place a 150-watt light bulb in an unshaded lamp.(A 100-watt bulb is not strong enough.)

    Step 2. Take off your glasses.

    Step 3. Sit about six inches away from the lamp with yo u re yes closed and re l a xed. The light should make your eye sfeel pleasantly warm but not too hot. If youre especiallys e n s i t i ve to light, sit farther away and reduce the distanceto six inches as it becomes more comfortable. Within afew days your eyes should be desensitized.

    Step 4. Gently move your head slightly from side to side,so that each eye receives an equal amount of light.

    Step 5. Breathe slow l yand deeply and imagineyour eyes becoming

    s t ronger andhealthier.

    PalmingWhat you do. Close your eyes and cover them with yo u rhands so that no light gets in.

    B e n e f i t s . Palming can reduce visual stress and eyestrain.

    How to do it:

    Step 1. Take off your glasses.

    Step 2. Close your eyes and cover them with cupped handsso that no light gets in. Rest the heels of your palms onyour cheekbones and cross your hands on your fore h e a d ,as shown in the illustration. Dont press on your eyes.

    Step 3. Make sure your eye l i d s ,e ye b rows, and the rest of theeye region are relaxed.

    Step 4. Breathe slowly anddeeply and imagine yo u re yes becoming stro n g e rand healthier.

    HydrotherapySAFETY REMINDER: Never do hydrotherapywith water hot enough to scald your skin.

    What you do. Dip a washcloth in the hot water and holdit against your closed eyes for thirty seconds. Then dip awashcloth in the cold water and hold it against your closedeyes for another thirty seconds.

    Benefits. Hyd rotherapy can relax the eyes and stimulatethe flow of nutrients to the entire eye region.

    How to do it:

    Step 1. Get two clean washcloths, a dry towel, a bowl ofhot water, and a bowl of cold water. Instead of bowls, yo ucan also use side-by-side sinks. The hot water should beas hot as is comfortable, but not so hot that it scalds yo u re yelids. The cold water should be ice cold, just out of therefrigerator or by adding ice cubes to a bowl of cold tapwater.

    Step 2. Take off your glasses.

    Step 3. Dip a washcloth inthe hot water and hold itagainst your closed eyes forabout 30 seconds.

    Step 4. Next, dip the otherwashcloth in the cold waterand hold it against yo u rclosed eyes for 30 seconds.

    Step 5. Continue the process, alternating between thehot and cold washcloths while visualizing positive changestaking place in your eyes.

    Step 6. Finish by massaging your closed eyes with a drytowel.

    NOTE: You can also use a hot water bottlefilled with hot wa t e rand an athletic icep a ck that has beenin the freezer. Cove rboth the hot waterbottle and the icep a ck in a soft cloth towel beforeplacing themagainst your closedeyes.

By developing New Visual Habits, exe rcising yo u reyes will become automatic and you wont have to thinkabout it. Learn the exe rcises well enough that you can dothem at times during the day when you have a free moment waiting in line at the bank or gro c e ry store, taking ab reak at work, talking on the phone, during TV com-m e rcials, etc. In this way, you can improve your vision inonly minutes a day, without taking any extra time outof your day, and yo ull develop the New Visual Ha b i t sthat are the key to better vision.

    Because poor visual habits are often a contributing factorin the onset of poor vision, it is important to develop goodvisual habits and use them each day. Poor visual habitsinclude:

    Q. Can children do the See Clearly Method?A. Yes. Its an excellent idea to tackle visual problems whenthey first appear. Good visual health is critical for all activities, including learning in school and athletics, sowe all want to be doing eve rything we can to help our chil-d ren maintain their visual health. We also want to helpthem reduce and possibly eliminate the onset of visionproblems.

    Helping kids develop good visual habits at an early age ise a s y. Its just like teaching them to brush their teeth, orhaving them participate in exe rcise programs to help buildtheir growing bodies. In the same way, the See ClearlyMethod program is your opportunity to help your chil-d ren maintain good visual health, and potentially set thestage for a lifetime free from vision problems. In ouropinion, most children can benefit greatly from doing theSee Clearly Method.

    We recommend that parents and children do the pro g r a mtogether for a few minutes a day. You might want to dopartial exercise sessions since children typically cant payattention for as long as adults.

    Q. Can any of the exercises be harmful?A. To the best of our knowledge, no injuries or other pro b-lems have ever occurred when the exe rcises are done asdirected. However, like any other form of physical exer-cise, its important not to overdo it. If your eyes becomeunpleasantly sore or you experience any pain in your eye swhen doing the exe rcises, you must immediately stop anddo the relaxation techniques.     Q. Im having difficulty doing the Fusion Chart technique.What should I do?A. If you are unable to get the faces to fuse together, dontw o r ry. This is an exe rcise that many people initially arenot able to do perfectly. If you have difficulty, do the ex-ercise as best you can. Over time it will become easier asyou gain greater control over your eyes. If you cant do thetechnique as it is demonstrated on the videos, try Me t h o d2, which is explained on page 23. Another option if yo urehaving difficulty is to substitute Tromboning (p. 11).

    Q. Many exe rcises ask me to look at an object in my blurzo n e , but for me eve rything looks blurry. What shouldI do?A. The blur zo n e is the area of your vision where thingsbecome fuzzy and unclear. For some people, e.g., peoplewith moderate to high astigmatism or people with pres-byopia and farsightedness, eve rything is blurry. If you fallin this category, you should use the area of your visionthat is least blurred.

    Q. What should I do if I dont like doing a particular exercise?A. As you do the See Clearly Method exe rcises you mayfind there are some exe rcises you like more or benefit fro mm o re than others. If there is an exe rcise you dont likedoing, its okay to skip it or substitute it with an exerciseyou do like. Howe ve r, difficulty with an exe rcise can be asign that the exe rcise is working on an aspect of your visionthat is weak, so you may want to keep practicing it.

    Q. What are the effects of the exe rcise sequences in the Ex-e rcise Sessions? Why are they more effective than just doingthe exercises in some other sequence or randomly?A. The exe rcises deal with the control of different muscleg roups. The sequences optimize the amount of exe rc i s eeach muscle group re c e i ves, so the muscles get a goodw o rkout without becoming strained. That's why we includerelaxation techniques like Palming and Ac u p re s s u re betwe e nmore vigorous exercises.

    Q. Why doesnt the average eye doctor use these techniques?A. The average eye doctor has only been trained to pre-scribe c o r re c t i ve lenses, drugs, or surgery, and has littleor no experience with natural methods of vision im-p rovement.
