Eye Magazine is 16 years old! In human years this is young – for a magazine this is a long time! This morning I was treated to

a La Prairie facial at Face Facts one of the few salons that has been around for 30 years and the only salon that has La Prairie in New Zealand. Whilst lying on the heated bed with my face being delightfully massaged with such a luxurious product I thought about the last 16 years of Eye Magazine and how much I have loved every issue we have ever done. I have met some amazing clients along the way and many of them I have become good friends with. It is hard to believe we have been putting Eye Magazine together for so long. Each issue is always a new project and we seem to have a never ending list of exciting things to profile.

This issue we showcase an amazing family company – Gull, it always makes me feel proud when families work so hard and develop such successful brands. We also profile some beautiful Italian families and how they have integrated into the New Zealand way of life and brought their culture to us.

We have two gorgeous covers, Calleija Jewellers on one end and the most amazing blue couch by Matisse at the other end. Both Calleija and Matisse are premium brands that adhere to the highest standards in their fields. We love both ends.

We continue with Part 3 of The House that Eye built, looking at kitchens and dining areas being the heart of your home. And of course being the season of love we profile weddings, there is more than one wedding every single weekend.

I hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we loved putting it together for you.

We are Sweet 16 but all grown up.

Blush for the Camera

An occasion as important as your wedding is one that you’ll remember forever. It marks commitment, togetherness and most of all, the happiest day of your life. It is a day that you want to reflect back on with joy and gratitude; therefore it’s

vital to choose a capable photographer to capture the moments in a memorable light.

Renowned wedding photographer and founder of Blush, Lisa Wilson, asserts that ‘you are investing in a lot more than a set of photos when you hire a professional photographer’. The dress, the bridal party, the venue and the guest list are all key components of the big event (and take up a considerable amount of preparation time), but intimate images allow you to relive the day for a lifetime.

After years of experience behind the lens, Lisa Wilson has become a true professional in the world of wedding photography. Exceeding expectations time after time, she has earned a respected reputation. A recent testimonial stated that she ‘captured the atmosphere perfectly and eternalized special moments’. Other couples have praised her for her impeccable organizational skills, business-like approach and ability to guide the day from home to ceremony

through to the reception and festivities. Lisa says that her company was founded on the belief that wedding

photography should, above all, capture the spirit, evoke emotion and stir the heart. She believes that the most beneficial element in obtaining the very best photos is being able to establish a sincere connection with her subjects. ‘Even before the photographic process begins, I take many extra steps toward finding out your hidden artistic desires and acknowledging the comfort zone that will represent your characteristics and individual style.’

The Blush service not only provides beautiful imagery, but a stunning Queensbury album to store every unique picture from the day. Made in New Zealand, the albums are an heirloom of lasting quality and craftsmanship; the perfect keepsake to show generations to come about your memorable day as each page you turn is one to remember. Designed in consultation with you, the look and layout is catered to fit in with your personal style – what Blush Wedding Photography is all about.

Owner Felicity Menzies puts a lot of time and effort into selecting the most stunning gowns and offering extremely friendly and

efficient service, helping to ease the process of choosing a dress for nervous brides. We caught up with Felicity to learn more about her passion behind her store.

What made you want to start your own bridal store? I have always wanted to own and run my own business and even when I was working full time for other people, I always had some sort of project on the side – a market stall selling my own clothes, baking, cake decorating, painting - so it was only a matter of time before I had a business of my own that I could work at full time. I like to think that this all began when I was 5 at my elder brother’s high school gala. I had some pocket money to spend and no sooner had we arrived and I had spotted my item to purchase, a chapel length veil! My brother was not happy about having his sister walk around for the rest of the day wearing the veil. I was over the moon!

Feel at Ease with Felicitys Bridal

I love to sew and create; this is my main passion behind owning my own bridal store. And of course as my name means ‘happiness’ I LOVE to make people feel special and happy!

A lot of places charge for initial consultations. Why do you choose to offer free consultations? I think this is a no-brainer. I wouldn’t feel comfortable asking for money for a service that I believe should just be a part of the experience of selecting your dream wedding gown. I am also very upfront with prices. They are listed on my website and are clearly shown in the showroom. I have standard fitting fees as well so each of my brides knows exactly what they will have to pay. I love to be able to spend genuine time with my brides without them feeling any pressure. This is not the sort of decision you should make knowing that you have a limited number of gowns to try on and worrying about how much is it costing you. Although our consultations are free we offer our brides a one on one service where we will offer as much or as little advice as the bride wants.

How do you select the designers that you stock and what do you look for in dresses? Firstly, I look for reliable designers that can deliver consistently and on time. Not all designers cover all of the designs I feel I need to have in store which is why I have a range. I look for good quality fabric, suitable structure and boning, colours, detail and a mixture of modern and traditional styles. I love very feminine designs and fabrics and I have to be careful I don’t end up with a whole boutique of the same dresses!

What are the latest styles and trends for weddings in 2012? There is still a strong trend for accents of colour, particularly black, on wedding gowns which I think looks very striking. Organza is right up there in terms of fabric and gaining more and more interest is lace. This has always been a popular choice for brides but every day I am asked for lace gowns. I adore lace and with more designs available there will be a lot of happy lace wearing brides to come.

1. Whatisthemainpointofdifferenceyourcustomerstendtoswaytowardswithasecondwedding? A second (or third…) wedding can bring a bride closer to being in touch with her true “self”. That of course means many different things to different women, but essentially she wants to convey her own “self expression”, through choosing a location, a style, theme, colour etc… that “feels right: for her. The previous wedding is often more about other people, especially her family’s wishes, and perhaps, over time she has developed her preference to a greater degree, and feels secure “being herself”.

2. Whatdoyouoffertoclientswhentheycometovisityouandtryongowns? I have been involved in bridal fashion since opening our first bridal salon in the 1980’s. Aurora Bridal is our third store and I personally bring over 30 years of experience working with women, to every consultation I do! I know from the moment I meet a bride what shape and style can enhance her figure, but I think my most important contribution to our relationship is that I encourage each person to explore their “vision” for their wedding day. This is a very personal experience, and is client-driven. Trying on styles and colours not previously considered, can be very illuminating, and can lead to a bridal style never dreamed of previously – very exciting!

3. Whatweddingdressstyle, doyoufeel, willalwaysremainclassic? Wedding gowns tend to be influenced by current fashion trends inevitably, however there are some “classical” styles that get re-invented each decade. One of the most flattering for any woman is the fitted basque waist bodice, with fullness in the skirt. These days the length of the bodice varies, but defining a woman’s shape to it’s maximum advantage is definitely the goal.

Second Time Round with Aurora BridalIt seems like everyone has an opinion on second weddings. “You shouldn’t wear white” or “You shouldn’t have such a fancy second wedding” It can always be difficult planning a wedding, let alone the second one, but don’t worry Avril from Aurora Bridal is here to help.

Page 31: Eye Magazine Spring 2012

4. WhatcanyourestateinPalmerstonNorthoffertocouplesforthebigday? Highden Manor Estate offers a unique experience far beyond just being a wedding venue. As an Historic Places Trust: Category I registration property, Highden presents the best of both worlds – a magnificent, historic, country estate combined with today’s modern conveniences. The best way to enjoy a wedding at Highden is definitely “The Weekend Wedding”. Arrive on Friday, (or earlier) and stay at Highden with your guests, so it’s perfect for a “Destination Wedding” or an overseas or out-of-town guest list. You and your guests and family can enjoy a special get-together for a few days in the most amazing location. Highden is only 12 minutes from Palmerston North airport and situated on 36 acres in the Manawatu countryside. See www.highdenmanor.co.nz for further details.

5. Whatcolourandstyleofdressismostpopularwithasecondwedding? That question is like asking “How Long is a piece of string?” As I always tell my brides – “There are no rules.” The goal is for every bride no matter her age or how many marriages are behind her, to look, feel and be her most special. Sometimes that means stepping outside her comfort zone. As we rarely tend to dress-up for special occasions these days, we’re usually unsure how we should “look” and that is where the advice of a professional can be so helpful.

For your wedding day to be perfect, it must also be memorable, and where better to frame memories to last a lifetime, than at The Wine House. A romantic historic homestead nestles among the vines at the

gateway to Gibbston Valley.Previously run as a wine tasting room, The Wine House

has been transformed into a venue that “adds an exciting new dimension for the Wai Dining Group which has been exploring options for a larger off-site venue for several years now” says Alex Boyes of Wai Dining Group.

The grounds include a fabulous and lovingly restored turn of the century villa with immaculate manicured gardens offering that ‘something special’ that will be remembered by your guests for times to come. With gorgeous scenery also providing a beautiful background for your photographer, your guests will have the luxury of socializing and relaxing before the main

event with drinks and canapés provided by the fabulous team at In2Food, who offer a variety of menus, industry experience and catering options at the beautiful venue.

To top it all off, having now been remodeled internally, The Wine House have extended the Dining Room capacity to 100 and the Courtyard Pavilion will now cater for up to 160 people for a sit down dinner. Wedding parties can utilise the beautiful gardens to exchange vows and move through to the Dining Room, Den, and outdoor pavilion for their reception.

So, just a quick 20 minute drive from downtown Queenstown, The Wine House is the perfect destination to help you create a truly memorable day – for you, your fiancé and your guests.

Artmount & Framing Matters Mounting Laminating Framing

Eye Magazine caught up with Dixie Finlayson of Artmount & Framing Matters in Parnell, Auckland. Artmount and Framing Matters were owned and operated separately until April this year when Dixie the original owner of Framing Matters Ltd merged both companies to create Artmount & Framing Matters Ltd. For you this means that all your mounting, laminating and framing matters can be sorted in one visit!

All framing is customized, meaning that everything they create is made to your specifications to suit your work. All framing of your work is done on site by framers with many years of hands-on workshop experience and industry knowledge . So whether you have a stunning photograph, a piece of art for your home or office, a run of 100 professional certificates, or posters that you are organizing for your clients, the staff at Artmount & Framing Matters will make your framing experience an enjoyable and easy one!

At Artmount & Framing Matters they also offer a wide choice of mounting processes. One of their specialties is their own product called Artmount®, a lightweight block mounting board. This board is manufactured at their Parnell factory and like the framing is customized to your specifications. Your images are mounted to Artmount® board in either 15, 20 or 40mm thickness and laminated for further protection and visual enhancement. You then choose the edge color to go around the sides of your artmounted image. The result is a fantastic simple contemporary look. This innovative product, unique to Artmount & Framing Matters, is an affordable, cost-effective way to create high-quality, sophisticated advertising

or point of sale displays, retail posters and uniquely personal artwork and photographs. Visit their website to learn about the many other mounting options available or follow them on facebook.

Mills Reef Winery & RestaurantLocated in tranquil semi-rural surroundings, Mills Reef Winery and Restaurant is one of the Bay’s premier destinations in Tauranga. The stylish art-deco winery is surrounded by 20 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds and manicured gardens, with an inviting and sophisticated, yet relaxed ambience. The culinary team prides itself on creating contemporary Pacific-rim cuisine, perfectly matched to showcase Mills Reef’s excellent award-winning wines. Dining options include brunch, the popular alfresco lunch (often with live music on Sundays) and dinner in the stylishly appointed restaurant. Friendly professional service completes the experience, making Mills Reef a true food and wine lovers destination! Mills Reef is also a great option for weddings, civil unions, conferences and functions.

THE STORY BEHIND OUR WINES & WINERYMills Reef Winery was established in 1989 by the Preston family. Through commitment and dedication to excellence, the Mills Reef brand has established itself as one of New Zealand’s premium wine brands with a particular reputation for outstanding Bordeaux varietal reds and Syrah.

Mills Reef Winery is one of New Zealand’s leading Gimblett Gravels producers, having won over 650 medals and 20 trophies in national and international competitions, along with being twice recipient of the prestigious New Zealand Winemaker of the Year Award.

In the last four months Mills Reef Winery has achieved an unprecedented level of success both nationally and internationally by winning four trophies at prestigious wine competitions. The London International Wine Challenge, The Bragato Wine Awards in New Zealand and then the Five Nations Wine Challenge in Sydney, all saw Mills Reef wines crowned as the best of the best. A result that again

reinforces the incredible pedigree of this Tauranga based winery. The Gimblett Gravels district is strictly determined by the gravely

soils laid down by the old Ngaruroro River in Hawkes Bay, exposed after a huge flood in the 1870’s. The temperatures in the Gimblett Gravels are between 2 and 3 degrees Celsius warmer than in other Hawkes Bay areas. This extra heat combined with gravely soils ensure ripe full flavoured grapes. Gimblett Gravels is continually producing New Zealand’s top Syrah and Bordeaux varietals.

Our winemaking team made up of Tim Preston and Paul Dawick, both share the philosophy of a hands-on, no expense spared approach, to producing fine award-winning wines under three different tiers.

Live the Dream with EsteemEsteem jewellery continues to transform the way stylish women look and savvy women earn.

Every woman needs a little luxury in her life – whether it’s the luxury of a piece of gorgeous jewellery, finding the time to catch up with friends or owning your own business. With esteem, women discover a wonderful way to look beautiful,

take control and become all they can be.

A Golden OpportunityEsteem passionately believes in helping women empower themselves. A New Zealand owned and operated company for over 16 years, Esteem markets a collection of high quality, affordable fashion jewellery through personal style sessions. As many have discovered, Esteem is a brilliant business opportunity for women who are looking for a passive income, who want the independence of owning a business (but not really sure how to go about it) and who also want the security provided by expert financial backing.

With flexible hours, great income and exciting rewards Esteem makes business rewarding for women from all walks of life. Whether your goal is to have the best jewellery box in town, or to work when you choose to work, or to earn from your very first Style Session, Esteem has brought so many women personal confidence and business success over the years.

Finding Your Inner SparkleNetworking is a modern byword and Esteem’s business structure allows Stylists to successfully access all the advantages and rewards of social selling. With a constantly evolving range of quality jewellery and a supportive business mentor programme, Esteem puts women’s futures in their own hands. Indeed, the company is committed to doing everything possible to ensure the individual and collective success its strong, growing community of women.

Esteem Stylists choose how much they want to earn and how many hours they want to invest. While Stylists often begin on a part time basis, most want to enjoy the rewards of committing to a full time business after a very short period of time. It is very common that women find that they are earning more while working fewer hours, and that their income as a Stylist far exceeds what they earned in their previous full time job.

Esteem’s 60-day coaching programme, with personal support from an experienced senior manager, means that Stylists are given all the tools to make their style sessions fun and profitable right from the start. Hostesses are easy to find with generous rewards that include gifts and a percentage of sales. Armed with a roll of fine jewellery and expert advice on how to make women look and feel amazing, Stylists can be confident that they are providing their customers with the very best experience in town.

For most Stylists, learning how to throw a great style session is only the beginning of the true Esteem success story. As their business grows, Stylists are given the opportunity to earn even more by building up a team and sharing in their financial success. Esteem Stylists are constantly being motivated and supported with company meetings, webinar training sessions and wonderful managers who are always on hand to share advice, encouragement, knowledge and expertise. All accounting and financial management is taken care of with the latest in online software. All Stylists have to do is log on with their orders, and within days their earnings are in the bank.

As well as having access to exquisite jewellery, a fantastic community and wonderful business support, Stylists can qualify for a host of rewards, including dream trips abroad to shop and bond with other Stylists, and to be pampered and treated like the stars that they are.

Her passion is to help people look younger and ultimately feel better about themselves on the inside and out. It is all about creating an individualised package for the client to

optimise self-esteem and make them feel great about their age and appearance.

The Eye and Face Institute has twelve state of the art machines from the USA, offering a variety of different laser treatments. Jenny is uniquely trained in operating these machines and explains three of these further.

IPL (Intense Pulse Light) – The IPL machine stimulates new collagen to form in the skin thereby reducing fine lines, minimising scaring and sunspots, and treating acne.

Fat Reduction – This machine stretches fatty tissue and breaks down toxins, allowing cellulite to be broken down and reduced. Settings can be adjusted to allow for age, severity of problem and location of cellulite on the body.

CO2 Fractional Laser – This machine resurfaces the skin, allowing for collagen to be stimulated. This treatment has become increasingly popular in New Zealand, especially with a growing number of men.

Jenny also offers a variety of permanent make up applications for the eyes and lips, and has a registered doctor on site for botox applications. She also stocks a range of top quality organic retail products for use at home.

Feeling Great About Your Age and AppearanceEye Magazine caught up with Jenny Chan, owner of The Eye and Face Institute in Kohimarama, Auckland. Jenny has over 25 years of international experience working in the appearance treatment industry, having trained in Paris and Los Angeles, and owned and operated clinics in these cities, Kuala Lumpur and Macau.. She teaches us about her anti-aging business, which has now been operating in New Zealand for eleven years.

“Since going to The Eye and Face Institute, I have noticed a visible difference in the appearance of my skin. Jenny and her team are very professional and gentle. I have been doing a variety of treatments on a weekly basis and I am very happy. My skin is now glowing. I have no under eye dark circles and my skin appears firmer. It’s nice to have a beautician that understands your skin type and treats you accordingly. It’s very important for me to have a relationship of trust and I have found that with Jenny and her team at The Eye and Face Institute.”-Miss World New Zealand 2011, Mianette Broekman.

Providing a place where fitness leads to real results is no small task. So when Scott Cottier opened Specforce gym, he decided to put his twenty years of experience in the industry as a training instructor for The New

Zealand Army to good use. The team values the concept of military, no frills exercise. They believe that endurance training is the best and most effective way of achieving results. It’s a concept that clearly works.

The popular intensive daily circuit classes are based on building stamina and determination through diversity, where no two classes are the same. Scott believes that the most efficient way to get results is by changing routines, taking people out of their comfort zones and placing them in a supportive environment with other people who are inspired to achieve results the correct way. Self defence programmes and leadership and team building packages designed to build confidence, are also on offer. The busy gym is in the process of introducing a new fitness challenge called Force-ops which is a new brand of

team-building exercises based on real life tasks and missions which are set to be held in class form all around Auckland. Other Specforce facilities include; individual lockers, separate showers and changing rooms for men and women and free underground car-parking. The rooms are available for the public to hire and a number of successful community quiz nights and kids’ club events have already been held here. In keeping with this close-knit family spirit, there is also a member’s lounge, furnished with comfortable couches, a TV and an Xbox, which is great for the entertaining the little ones.

Undoubtedly, leading the charge in fitness training and confidence building, the Specforce team pride themselves on treating their gym members as family while pushing them to attain realistic achievements. It’s a place where members are encouraged and motivated but most importantly, it’s a place where real fitness leads to real results.

Owning a boat in the city can be difficult – transporting it, finding somewhere to launch, let alone keeping it securely stored when it’s not in use. It is all time and effort that can be hard to find in today’s busy world.

But as Auckland is the City of Sails and boasts a beautiful harbour that is viewed by most of us almost daily, it seems unfair to not be able to get out there for monthly, if not weekly, adventures. And that’s where Orams Marine is there to help.

Understanding the frustrations faced by many boat owners, they provide practically every service required by those who enjoy life on the water. With one phone call an hour prior to your estimated time of departure, your boat can be ready, full of fuel and waiting in the

Hassle-free Boating with Orams Marine

water for you. And when it is not in use, it will be stored and secure in a purpose built facility in downtown Auckland, the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

Neven Barbour from Orams Marine says their philosophy is to offer hassle-free boating in any way they can. “We understand that many people are living in apartments and section sizes are getting smaller, so storing a boat just isn’t realistic for most. We enable boat owners to have easy access to their boats when required.”

“It is convenient and efficient for people who are time poor but still enjoy all the fun and pleasure of getting out on the water.”

When stepping through the stylish glass doors of the new Sofitel in Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour, one could be

forgiven for feeling a little French. Here, you’ll find simple yet elegant furnishings decorating the lobby and beautifully groomed surrounds typical of a Parisian getaway. You’ll smell the sweet fragrance of freshly cut flowers and ground coffee beans roasted to perfection. You’ll hear the words “Bonjour” and “Bonsoir” aplenty and you’ll taste the best in local and international wines and foods full of flavour.

It is clear that the Sofitel team are inherently proud of French traditions. As

the day turns to night, candles of all shapes and sizes softly light up the lobby in an age-old tradition of lighting the streets of Paris. At the luxury bar, Sabrage, guests can experience the French ceremonial tradition of its namesake where the cork and glass collar of a champagne bottle are removed in one smooth swoop of a sabre. In typical European fashion bread accompanies every meal complimentary and delicious pain au chocolat and pastries are served for breakfast. But the team here are not only proud of their French heritage. New Zealand artists and Maori designs adorn the walls while local produce fills the pantries in a tribute to our own beautiful country. It is this delightful

combination that sets Sofitel apart from the rest.

Perfectly located in the heart of Auckland’s popular Viaduct Harbour, guests can choose from luxurious bedrooms and suites tailored to suit every need. Each room boasts private balconies, personal espresso machines, Bose entertainment systems and beautiful oversized bathrooms - some with dual vanities - all with a separate rain showers and deep baths. In the closets and cupboards you’ll find the best essential items for your stay such as L’Occitane soaps, fluffy white robes, hairdryers, comfy slippers, even elegant Sofitel shopping bags. Specially designed ‘MyBeds’ provide layer upon layer

of hypoallergenic down and duck feathers which promises the best sleep for guests in need of rest.

It’s not only the luxurious rooms and items that make Sofitel so perfect for travellers. It’s the blend of cuisines. There’s an array of choices to suit any taste at any time, whether you long for sweet frangipani tarts and chocolate éclairs from 21 Viaduct Cafe, or delicious meals with locally sourced ingredients from the restaurant, Lava Dining. Executive Chef Scott Brown brings an international style to the Lava kitchen with experience working in some award winning restaurants in New Zealand, Australia and London. From ricotta hot cakes with rhubarb,

apple syrup and buffalo yogurt to a juicy New Zealand lamb rump with Jerusalem artichokes, soy beans, pine nuts and black olives, he creates innovative meals adding his signature element of surprise to each dish.

The restaurant has been designed to accommodate all different occasions such as early morning breakfasts, casual lunches and intimate dinners. Backlit marble walls give the interior a golden glow at night and large floor to ceiling windows flood the rooms with light during the day, so guests can soak up the sun and enjoy the beautiful Waitemata basin views- the very name of which means sparkling waters.

All of these small pleasures are perfectly

balanced with a New Zealand influence. You’ll see a large Maori sculpture sitting majestically in the middle of the water-filled lobby and views of New Zealand’s landscapes painted in artists’ works. Even the carpet underfoot mimics the curving shorelines of our wild beaches. You’ll taste fresh foods like South Island cold smoked salmon and cheeses from Kumeu and the Waikato.

A home away from home - with a touch of French flair - life here at Sofitel is truly trés magnifique.

Gourmet Glamour

Flooded with natural light that bounces off a myriad of sparkling surfaces, Lauxes seems made for lingering lunches and decadent dinners.

While the park-side restaurant and cocktail bar knows how to pull a good-looking crowd after dark, it runs the same sophisticated menu by day. Key to the formula is a greatest hits- style wine list and a cocktail for every whim.

However Lauxes is more than just a place to eat, it is also an astonishingly versatile venue space. The area where on many nights diners clink their glasses and sample the fine cuisine, can transform into a space suited to a host of events – weddings and corporate VIP dinners being particularly popular. On the Gold Coast for New Years? Then Lauxes’ New Year’s Eve event is not to be missed.

The Internet has given us a wonderful tool for shopping conveniently online in the comfort of our homes. However it has also created a plethora of unscrupulous retailers who sell replicas, fakes and rip offs of authentically designed

furniture clothing and accessories often passing them off as the real thing.

Design Online has been created to ensure your furniture or accessories purchased online are authentic and are not replica copies. All products on their website are guaranteed to have been

manufactured by the authorised manufacturer of the original design thus protecting the consumer from inferior fakes that invariably disappoint both qualitatively and aesthetically and become worthless as a long term investment.

Authentic designs—pieces produced by designers or their authorised manufacturers—are investments. They may be pricier than their knockoff versions but they are usually crafted with high-quality materials, will last for generations and will retain value. Knockoffs, by contrast, tend to be short-term objects; they are

made with lower-quality foam, fabrics, metal, joinery, glue, and veneers that break down faster. They will end up in the bin and probably sooner than you hope.

Take the iconic Eames designs for example. Purchase the authentic design, manufactured by the authorised manufacturer, Herman Miller, from Design Online and your purchase is likely to double in value over the next decade. Buy the replica elsewhere and it is destined to become valueless.

Design Online will not only protect you from design theft but

will bring you authentic design at sensational prices due to our low overhead advantage over traditional re-sellers. Additionally you can visit their showroom/warehouse at 69 St.Georges Bay Road in Parnell, Auckland if you are uncomfortable purchasing on line or wish to see the products on the showroom fl oor.

Design Online not only purchases from the New Zealand agents for our authentic designer pieces but also sources its own exclusive designer brands direct to you at very affordable prices.

Eye Magazine caught up with Angela Sorenson, the Manager of Design Online.

How long has Design Online been around? We have been operating as an online store for about three years now but have only recently opened up our warehouse showroom to the public.

Being an online store do you get many visitors? We are amazed how much foot traffic we get for an online store,

especially seeing as we are at the end of a cul de sac. We expected to get the majority of people calling in on Saturday & Sunday while visiting the Parnell French markets but this is not the case. We get a lot more during the week which surprised and pleased us. We are becoming a destination store.

How would you describe your clients? They range from the young and computer savvy wanting Aeron chairs & quirky gifts like the “Teapots” Romeo the cat lamp to our more discerning clients, including many clients from rural New Zealand, who would not get a chance to visit our showroom.

What is the latest trend? This is what I love about Design Online, we are not limited to any trend or style in particular, as long it is great design, authentic (not a copy) we will sell it. There are new products arriving all the time. I feel like a kid in a candy store.

We have an incredible range of accessories ranging from the classic ceramics from Bitossi, Alexander Girard Dolls and Eames house bird from Vitra right through to our latest offering of quirky teapot designs from Germany.

Some of the new lines that we have introduced this year are the sofa & sofa beds from Futura. Futura specialise in seating that morphs

into beds & chaises without looking like the traditional sofa bed. One of my favourites is the Le Vele Video which starts off looking like a two seater sofa, they can be pulled apart to look like two armchairs and then can be adjusted into chaises with a table in between. It can be further adjusted to become two single beds or pushed back together to become a double bed. It’s fantastic.

My other favourite is the Kite, this is a modular design with a gloss lacquer base, the seats can be swivelled & adjusted to form interesting sleeping arrangements. We have the Kite in some crazy fabrics; you have to see it to really appreciate it. www.designonline.co.nz

Gull New Zealand Today, Gull NZ Ltd is a major player and New Zealand’s only independent, family-owned oil company.

Gull – A Family AffairIn 1976, after more than 30 years in the building industry, Fred Rae came across an opportunity to invest his capital in a fledgling Perth service station business. It was a humble beginning for the company that would become Gull Petroleum.

Over the next few years, Fred realised that there was even better opportunity if the company was managed as a family business. In 1984, Fred invited his son, Neil, and son-in-law Ian, to join him.

Neil commenced as a director in 1984 taking over the operational side of the business. Neil could see how Gull could grow and become even more efficient, while still offering great service. In 2003, after serving as Executive Director for many years, Neil was appointed Chairman. In 2007, Neil became inaugural chairman of the Biofuels Association of Australia, where he helped create a sustainable and economically viable Australian biofuels industry, consistent with community interests and environmental standards.

Son-in-law, Ian Green, had previously held senior accounting and management positions within the building and transport industries. In 1984, he was appointed to the board as Finance Director, and later appointed Deputy Chairman. Ian’s industry experience in service station retailing and development, fuel supply and terminalling operations was an invaluable asset in establishing Gull Petroleum’s New Zealand operations.

Facilitating the success of the family-owned company has been a specialised and loyal team dedicated to offering motorists a real choice in a competitive market. In New Zealand the team consists of 12 employees led by Dave Bodger, who has had a wealth of experience in the fuel industry prior to being appointed General Manager of Gull New Zealand, and Ulrik Olsen, Business Development & Marketing Manager who has been with the company for 14 years and has broad experience in many management roles.

“Developing such an excellent and highly valued small team in New Zealand has proven to be the key to our success”, says Neil Rae.

Taking Wings By the 1990’s, Gull Petroleum W.A. had grown so much their supplier, BP, was unable to meet their fuel needs. In keeping with Gull’s feet on the ground philosophy, the Gull team decided to tackle the issue by building their own import fuel terminal.

Gull Petroleum’s new self-sufficiency led to greater growth, profitability and an extension into convenience retailing. By the late 1990’s, the company was well established and looking to stretch its wings. New Zealand was a logical step as there were no independent networks, but a lot of independent sites.

Free from the massive marketing budgets and overheads of the big oil companies, the Gull team knew they could make these smaller sites work. In 1998, Gull began building a state of the art fuel terminal in Mt Maunganui. Tanks were floated down from Marsden Pt. 400 km away – a feat the opposition said was “impossible.” When Gull began supplying their retail network, the price of petrol was brought down by 20 cents per litre.

Beyond Discounted FuelIn late 2010, Gull sold its 34 year old Aussie business to a private equity company, choosing to focus on the growth of its New Zealand business and keeping the local fuel market competitive.

Gull NZ’s independence has made them a competitive player in an over-

pumped market. Well recognised as a leader in low fuel prices, whilst delivering high quality products, the company is much loved by Kiwis looking to alleviate the increasing burden of living costs. The company uses technical innovation to increase customer savings in every way they can. The introduction of unmanned service stations cut the cost of labour and saved customers money and time, just by using Eftpos at the pump.

The first to introduce bio-diesel and bio-ethanol, and the first to offer low sulphur diesel ahead of regulation, Gull NZ has consistently been at the forefront of any new initiative in the sector. Gull continues to lead New Zealand as an environmentally conscious oil company. It even practices vapour recovery at most of its retail sites – again well ahead of regulation.

In simple terms, vapour recovery works a little like this: “When the truck comes to fill the service station tanks, which are full of fumes, we don’t push the dirty, contaminated air through a pipe up into the atmosphere, which is common practice,” says Gull Business Development Manager, Ulrik Olsen.

“Instead, we create a closed loop between the truck and the tank so that the fumes go into the truck to be taken to a safe place. We don’t have to do it but we do it anyway. It is really a good neighbourly thing to do”.

Gull’s premium fuel is called Gull Force 10, and is 98 octane. Instead of importing already made 98 Octane as separate product, Gull blends 95 octane with ethanol – which, on its own, is a whopping 113 octane – to achieve the required 98. Further, strengthening the company’s ties with its new home, Gull sources the majority of its ethanol from Fonterra, having fostered a relationship with New Zealand’s dairy giant. The ethanol is sustainably produced from a by-

Flying Into The FutureGull NZ reached a milestone this July when it opened its 50th service station in Matamata. To mark the special event, locals were treated to a 50 cent per litre discount across the fuel range for a two hour period.

The celebrations kicked off in grand style with a live band rocking out on the petrol station rooftop, speeches by Matamata Mayor, Hugh Vercoe and Mr Bodger. Community group performances and giveaways kept locals entertained throughout the event.

The 50th site cemented the family-owned fuel retailer as a key player in the petroleum market. “We’re no longer the new kid on the block and we are here to stay. We’ve been here 14 years; our critics said we wouldn’t last a year,” says Olsen.

“Over and above value for money when filling up, is the fact that our customers can always pick up the phone and ring me or someone at the office. You don’t get fobbed off to a call-centre in Bangkok who will ‘get back to you.’ We are a New Zealand managed family owned company and it’s what sets us apart.”

“Gull’s investment is a vote for in favour of the future of the New Zealand service station industry. While major oil companies are constantly evaluating their presence in this market, Gull views both New Zealand and Tauranga as a stable and reliable market to invest in.”

product of dairy processing.Last year, Gull NZ announced the construction of a new ten million

litre fuel tank at their Mt Maunganui storage facility, which is operated by Terminals (N.Z.) Limited (TNZ), a member of the Gull group of companies. The new tank brings TNZ’s total storage capacity to 88 million litres.

“Modern, economic, state of the art storage enables Gull to keep pump prices low and discount even further when we can, and we’re currently the only ones who consistently give Kiwi motorists that choice,” says Gull General Manager, Dave Bodger.

“Gull’s investment is a vote in favour of the future of the New Zealand service station industry. While major oil companies are constantly evaluating their presence in this market, Gull views both New Zealand and Tauranga as a stable and reliable market to continue invest in.”

Again in keeping with company philosophy, Gull NZ recently partnered with another family owned enterprise, South Island convenience grocery chain, Night ‘n Day, opening 21 new stores.“ Like Gull, Night ‘n Day is a family-owned company that has the freedom to manage its stores in a way that suits the local community,” explains Bodger.

The kitchen is the heart of the home. It is no longer just where we cook, it’s where we live our lives, socialise and share in culinary experiences with friends and family. It’s no coincidence that cooking shows dominate our television screens at the moment, they have inspired us to get back in the kitchen and create, share our passion with other foodies, and has

re-ignited the trend of home entertaining. This issue we are delighted to introduce to you Kouzina Appliances in Parnell. When I met with

Martin Cross, Director and owner, he showed me around their inspiring showroom at the Strand. Their stunning range of European appliances are highly coveted and are now on my wish list for when I update my kitchen next year! I found Martin to be highly personable, and recommend a trip to their showroom if you are considering purchasing new appliances for your kitchen.

Our very talented interior designer, Shelleece Stanaway shares with EYE some of her ideas when considering design and function in the dining room.

We hope you enjoy this issue of EYE Interiors and The House That EYE Built.

The dining room is a place where family and friends gather together to talk and

eat. Nowadays it is very rare to find separate dining rooms as most spaces are integrated kitchen/dining or dining/living spaces. This being a reflection of our busy, modern lifestyles and the changing trend in how we entertain.

Dining In StyleTable and chairs should always be centre point of the dining room, so

it is crucial to figure out the maximum size of the dining table. Take into consideration the amount of space that is taken up by the dining room chairs and ensure that it is easy to move around the outside of the chairs while people are still seated at the table.

Remembering that people will often sit for an hour to eat dinner and relax, comfortable chairs are paramount. Guests might be seated for an entire evening talking, drinking wine and eating.

It is not essential to have matching table and chairs. An eclectic mix can give the room charisma and offer an opportunity to showcase your individual identity. There is a huge array of options to choose from. When deciding, it is really a question of selecting the right style, shape and level of comfort as well as colour and texture

Setting The MoodLighting is an incredibly important feature in any dining room. I always recommend controllable lighting because it enables you to choose a particular mood and set the perfect ambience for different types of entertaining. It can be really nice to repeat a series of identical pendants or shades over the dining table. This gives the table setting structure. Look at where your lights are sitting. It can be quite effective to have pendants hanging low and close to the surface. It gives a wonderful ambiance and works as an aesthetic table feature or centrepiece.

Artwork is a fabulous way for us to express our personalities. The dining room is a fantastic place to display photographs, sculptures or paintings and it gives the room character and soul.

Stylish StorageWhen designing your dining room, it is important to consider how you want the room to work for you. It has to suit how you live and use the space. Determine the kind of storage that suits your lifestyle. It might be a freestanding sideboard or an entire wall of shelving to display treasures or beautiful crockery. It all comes down to a matter of individual preference.

Shelleece Loves:♥ Gorgeous pendant lights that sit low over a dining room table.♥ Masculine/feminine contrasts. This might mean pairing soft linens of a

tablecloth with large solid dining room chairs.♥ Lush upholstered chairs for super comfort.♥ Table settings that add a wow factor.

So the walls are up and the roof is on, now what? While the big parts of the house are finally coming together, there are lots of little things that need to happen on the inside to make sure you have a fully functioning house.

And while the saying goes ‘don’t sweat the small stuff’ – being conscious of the details will get you a lot closer to your dream home.

But wait! Before you go spending up large, know your budget and do your best to stick to it. If you are unsure about what you have in the bank, why not make an appointment to see your mortgage manager. It is probably a great time to catch up with them anyway to discuss progress on the build and any payments coming up. If you bank with BNZ, you’ll find they have a lot of products and services on offer that help you to manage your finances. TotalMoney is a home loan that combines the benefits of offsetting with a floating interest rate to give customers the ultimate in flexibility. Your transaction and savings accounts offset your mortgage so you pay less interest, but you still have full access to the money in these accounts and this means you can enjoy the benefits of offsetting without needing to change your spending habits.

Now might also be a good time to check in with your project manager. If you chose to work with a professional building company, like G.J. Gardner, why not see how everything looks now that the house is more than just a plan on a piece of paper. As they want to build a house that suits your lifestyle and needs, have a chat about anything you aren’t sure about – you never know what type of detail could be changed that will mean the world of difference to how you move around your home.

Although the design of your home was completed ages ago, it doesn’t mean that everything inside the house has to be locked into place, and there are quite a few details to think about. These days building an energy efficient home is essential and some things are actually in the building code, like using double glazed windows and having a certain standard of insulation. It can be hard to understand all the requirements, so if in doubt, get in touch with Right House who can help you create a comfortable, healthy and energy wise home. They can point you in the right direction of efficient light fittings, hot water heating options and other simple, yet effective tools for future proofing your home.

Windows and doors provide obvious functional use, but did you know that there are a lot more options over and above just filling a hole in a wall? Windows and doors are an often undervalued consideration when building a home, yet they are a vital connection to indoor and outdoor spaces and are essential for providing light and ventilation. Fletcher Aluminium have been doing what they do for years, and that’s providing expert products and advice when it comes to all things joinery, so make sure you don’t just ‘settle’ for any window or door as it could be the difference between simple function and the freedom of lifestyle.

A new house will never be fully complete without your dream kitchen. It’s the hub slash heart of the home more often than not, and you are free to let your imagination run wild with mydreamkitchen.co.nz. Here you can collect ideas, glean inspiration and generally have a blast working out how it will all come together. There is definitely not a ‘one size fits all’ approach when it comes to kitchens, so make sure you decide what will work best for you and your family.

And of course you need to work out which appliances will go

into your kitchen, as well as your laundry. Ease of use and having a high standard of performance is so important when it comes to the machines that help with your household chores, so choose carefully. Fisher & Paykel is a household name in New Zealand, and with their commitment to technology, design, user friendliness and environmental awareness it won’t be hard to find all that you need in their range of appliances. Work out how much space you have, what is important to you in terms of functionality and how you will be using these products on a daily basis – they need to fit in with who you are.

Floor coverings will be a decision that needs to be made as construction progresses. As a ‘finishing touch’ to the house it is what pulls your whole house together. So understandably, it can be a scary choice to make as once it is down, it will be down for many years to come. But the great thing is there are options which mean it doesn’t actually have to be that permanent. Designer Rugs offer a huge range of floor coverings which can be changed every season if you wish. And if you have wooden floors, large rugs can help with defining spaces in open plan living. As a great alternative to carpet, Designer Rugs provide flexibility and the ability to transform a room in minutes.

As all the work is completed outside the house, your section can be reclaimed to be reviewed for its future potential. Don’t be afraid of thinking about gardens now, as getting planting in before the house is finished means it will be fully flourishing on moving in day. Palmers are experts in landscaping and can provide the broad spectrum of services from design to implementation, or are just happy to offer advice on what plants will work best in your garden. Why not walk into a home that is complete inside and out and which you can enjoy straight away.

And speaking of the outdoors, how much time will you be spending out there? Do you like to BBQ, entertain friends, or simply relax with a book? Depending on the size of your outdoor living, you will probably need some sort of shading to be protected from the harsh New Zealand sun, and those showers that always seem to come out of nowhere. Open up your life to the outdoors, no matter the weather, with Shade 7.

And what about a little ‘cherry on top’? What about, say, a spa? Vortex Spas offer New Zealander’s the chance to buy a spa at factory direct prices, so you don’t even have to break the bank to get one installed. You’ll probably wonder how you ever lived without one.

While most home owners dream of paying off their mortgage faster, it is seen to be wishful thinking – along the same lines as having a ‘money tree’ in the backyard!

However BNZ always has its thinking caps on and has some actual real-life products and tools available to its customers to help them get mortgage free, faster.

“From TotalMoney to revolving credit home loans and tailored repayment options, there are many ways our customers can achieve their financial goals,” says Matt Nauer, National Sales Development Manager for BNZ.

To accomplish this, BNZ banking consultants are encouraged to have conversations with their customers to discover their financial needs and savings goals. This ensures customers are provided the right products and services to help them get where they want to be, whether it’s paying off the mortgage faster or saving thousands on interest.

Perhaps the most exciting product from BNZ is TotalMoney, which is a home loan that combines the benefits of offsetting with a floating interest rate to give customers the ultimate in flexibility.

“With TotalMoney your everyday transaction and savings accounts offset your mortgage so you pay less interest, but you still have full access to the money in these accounts,” says Nauer.

This means you can enjoy the benefits of offsetting without needing to change your spending habits. Plus as TotalMoney interest

Faster freedom with BNZ

rates are floating, you can make lump-sum repayments or repay the full loan without incurring any early repayment charges.

TotalMoney also assists customers with budgeting, where you can have up to ten separate accounts and assign each account with a different savings goal, whilst still using these funds to offset your mortgage.

While home ownership and a mortgage can seem a daunting prospect to some, it is BNZ’s job to understand who you are and what you want from your mortgage.

“BNZ is committed to helping New Zealanders be good at managing their money, because we believe if you’re good with money you can do good things with it,” says Nauer.

THE HOUSE THAT EYE BUILT

Kitchens are becoming one of the most important and personal spaces in the house with family and friends often joining in. The kitchen is seen

as a social place to prepare food, eat and gather and is the centre stage of a modern home.

Most new home owners get overwhelmed when thinking about all the aspects to designing their new kitchen. Kitchen designers are knowledgeable about products, layouts and trends and their experience is invaluable in guiding during the design. They understand how certain elements in the kitchen work and can suggest similar products in a variety of price ranges to suit your needs.

Gather information by saving photos, magazines etc. that you like. Study layouts to determine what would work best for your family’s lifestyle. Ask friends what they like or dislike about their own kitchens. Kitchens are about creating a workplace that reflects your individual personality and style and make sure your kitchen reflects how you really live.

Consider the following functional aspects of your kitchen:

When planning you kitchen it is important to first determine your personal style, then you can decide which cabinetry and accessories to incorporate into your new kitchen.

gloss, matt, timber veneers or laminates. Bench tops sets the tone for the whole room and should be aesthetically pleasing.

Consider using hidden storage, drawers and utensil inserts to maximise your organisational space. There should be sufficient storage space with your most frequent used items handy. Make good use of awkward corners spaces with corner drawers or pull out options.

Make sure the five zones, cooking, cleaning, preparation, consumables and non-consumables, fit your requirements.

Maximise your bench space and store your utensils, spices, paper towels, kitchen tools,

oils and sauces etc. with various internal hardware options available.

Choose the right sink that fits your needs. There are a variety of styles, designs and materials.

Select a layout that suits your needs and lifestyle, e.g. will there be a primary cook or more people working in the kitchen or do you want to incorporate informal seating areas?

Clever use of lighting can highlight a certain area and add a modern feel to your design. Just like in your other rooms make sure that you have a combination of general, task and mood lighting to create a mix of diffused and directed light.

Multiple appliance choices are available and manufacturers are bringing the functionality of high-tech gadgets to appliances and streamlining their designs.

There are many different types of flooring in various finishes and price ranges. It is very important to choose the right flooring for your kitchen.

Summer is nearly upon us, so grab those BBQ tongs and throw on your jandals! Are you looking to design your dream summer Kitchen or

Dining Space? Look to Fletcher Aluminium and their experienced team to help create the indoor and outdoor flow to suit the way you want to live.

Reflecting modern lifestyles of open plan living and the temperate climate of New Zealand, are increasingly popular supersized doors that connect indoor dining areas to outdoor spaces. As we head into the summer months, spaces which blur the line between indoor and outdoor living, become central to happy family occasions and summer barbecuing.

Fletcher Aluminium are excited about the different door configurations available in this category. There are Foldback® Bifolds that fully maximize door openings, allowing uninterrupted views and access, by folding back against the wall. There are also Sliders and Stackers. The Eurostacker® is fantastic as it comes in a variety of different sizes and configurations, from two panels that stack

over a fixed panel, through to ones that go over cladding, into a cavity, or even bi-part at a corner.

These days it is not uncommon to see homes with openings from the living, kitchen and dining areas that span 10 metres or more, can be 3 metres in height, and have door panel weights of up to a quarter of

a tonne! Innovative designs and superior performance of glass and aluminium joinery make this all possible today.

Fletcher Aluminium products are unique. Their doors cleverly blend practicality, functionality and aesthetics. This is particularly the case, with door sills. In a conventional sliding door, there is an unsightly dirt trap and doors become hard to slide. In contrast, with the Eurostacker® you get a flush sill with a chevron shaped wheel guide, allowing smooth easy opening and closing every time. As well as aesthetic clean lines, there are no dirt traps and it performs better from both a weathering perspective and also size and weight capacity capabilities.

So cast your attention to the indoor and outdoor flow of living in your own home and talk to the experienced team at Fletcher Aluminium. They will provide you with many exciting and practical options for designing your kitchen and dining areas to reflect your family’s lifestyle.

Celebrity chef Simon Gault is on board endorsing the initiative.

“My Dream Kitchen is a fantastic initiative from The Laminex Group.

As a proud owner of a Corian kitchen myself, I’m thrilled to be involved,” Simon said.

“I have commissioned quite a few kitchens in my time and I wish there had been something like My Dream Kitchen around then – it would have been a massive help!”

My Dream Kitchen is the go-to website for consumers to get practical tips and inspiration when renovating your kitchen. It includes a 3D kitchen design programme, kitchen images and themes, updates on latest global trends, finance tips, choice of materials and how to choose a builder, as well as ‘My Pantry’ – a scrapbook where consumers can collate and share inspirational images.

The website has been created with design and simplicity in mind. The large tile format makes it easy to navigate and clearly shows the user the main items within the site at first glance. The website provides the user with information and inspiration to help renovate their kitchen. Instead of having to search and obtain information from multiple resources, My Dream Kitchen is aiming to be the one and only place you need to go. The website is divided into 5 main components.

InspirationThis section has been split into 3 parts, a gallery of kitchen images, colour trends and design trends. The vast gallery of kitchen images allow you to search by style, colour, layup and budget. The images cover a vast array of styles and will be continually added to, helping you create the kitchen look that best suits your personality and needs. Colour and product trends will be updated with what’s happening around the world and keeps you up to date with the latest innovation and technology in kitchen design.

TipsThere are so many things to think about when renovating or building a new kitchen from design and consent to building and budgets. The tips section of the website is divided into 4 main areas and also allows you to download a printable checklist to help with your kitchen planning. The areas of focus are:Planning stages – reasons for renovating, current and future kitchen requirements and a checklist of questions you need to ask yourself.Design – finding a designer, kitchen layouts, storage and design considerations.Finances – budget guide

Construction – choosing a builder, consents and the choosing the right tradespeople for your job.

My PantryStore and share all your favourite images, ideas and tips for your new kitchen in our online scrapbook. My Dream Kitchen is a great resource for all things kitchen and the most convenient way to store all your kitchen ideas. Once you have registered with the site you can save anything you like into your own personalised “scrapbook”.

ProductsThe product section provides you with in depth information on a range of products that can be used in your kitchen. Find out the best products for your cabinetry doors, splashbacks, flooring, sinks and of course the benchtops.

Benchtops have to endure a tremendous amount of wear and tear, which is why the materials used for benchtops must be tough.

There is a wide selection of benchtop materials available and it can become quite confusing to find the one that’s right for you. Find out about traditional high quality benchtop products such as Formica and Laminex. High Pressure Laminates are one of

the most cost-effective options and come in a large range of colours and patterns.

CaesarStone, made of a quartz and resin compound which mostly mimics stone or granite. Engineered stone is tough and has a “softer” feel than granite. Engineered stone has a number of advantages over its natural counterpart. It’s almost totally non-porous, so it doesn’t need to be sealed.

Solid Surfaces material Corian comes in a great range of colours and has the advantage that joins are not visible. When selecting your benchtop material you need to consider your lifestyle and budget. My Dream Kitchen will allow you to decide based on technical attributes, use, colour and budget.

Also coming soon to the My Dream Kitchen website will be information on the right hardware solutions, appliances for your kitchen and an amazing 3D planner which lets you play around with the layout and design of your kitchen before visiting the professionals.

TIPS WHEN RENOVATING YOUR DREAM KITCHEN1. Renovating can be a costly and inconvenient business. Before you launch into renovations, take time to consider whether the expense

and disruption is justified. 2. Experience has shown that most people keep a kitchen for approximately 15-20 years. That’s why it pays to carefully consider your

needs and wants before you venture out to buy a kitchen. When planning for your dream kitchen it’s a good idea to consider the size of your household, lifestyle, cooking habits and kitchen functionality.

3. Whether you need a designer to design and draw up plans really depends on the extent of work being done. Major renovations involving moving walls around, adding new rooms or having a new kitchen put in will benefit from the design expertise of an architect, architectural designer or architectural draughtsperson. Their ideas can help to maximise floor space, aspect to the sun, and flow.

4. When selecting the floor plan for your kitchen, there are 6 basic kitchen layouts to consider: Galley Kitchen - A walk-through kitchen design, featuring cabinets on two sides. The Galley design or corridor kitchen is common in

many apartments and open-plan layouts. L Kitchen - One line of cabinets placed around a corner. L Shaped kitchen designs are great for small spaces and open-plan rooms. U Kitchen - A U shaped kitchen design usually has one entrance and all counter space and appliances are built into a U shape. Single Line Kitchen - In this layout the sink, cooking range and refrigerator are placed in a single line. G Shaped - All counter space and appliances are built into a G shape with one entrance and extended benchtop/breakfast bar creating

the ‘G’ shape. Island Kitchen - Adding an island is the most common way to achieve multiple work centres in a kitchen. An island suits many modern

house styles where there is enough space and can provide several small work stations along its perimeter5. The layout of the kitchen space is not the only thing to consider. You should also take into consideration important aspects such as,

connection requirements (electricity, water etc.), dimensions and sill height of window and kitchen area (length, width and height of room).6. And finally the budget, the word everyone hates! But of course a very necessary part of the whole process. After you have gathered all

your ideas and wish list, it is time to realistically assess how much you can afford to pay. You may have to slightly reign in some ideas that you were thinking of so that you can get the job done!

Photovoltaic (PV) panels positioned on a roof generate clean electricity by converting sunlight to electricity. PV is different to solar hot water systems which are also mounted on rooftops, but use the heat from the sun to provide hot water

for household uses. During daylight hours, the PV panels produce a DC current, this runs through an inverter that converts the current into AC electricity. It is then suitable for electrical appliances and export to the main electricity grid.

One of the first questions people have is around the potential savings they can expect. While the economics of a PV system will be different for every site and is dependent on a number of different variables, most customers can expect a return on investment in the range of 6% to 10% per year, as well as an increase in the capital value of their property.

Site-specific variables that need to be considered when determining the savings made with a PV system start with the size and cost of the actual PV system. Then the anticipated annual energy yield; which is dependent on your climate, the roof orientation and inclination, along with any potential shading that may be present on the site(shading on an PV array can severely impact its performance).

What electricity price you currently pay for imported electricity and then the price paid to you from your electricity retailer for exported electricity that the PV system generates (this is usually called the feed-in tariff)

Save on Electricity with Right House

And lastly, your household electricity demand profile. That’s how much electricity you use in your home and when you are using it. The key is to use as much of the solar generated electricity as possible. This reduces the amount of electricity you need to buy from your electricity retailer. Given that a PV system only generates during the day, this could mean running appliances such as the washing machine, dishwasher, and hot water cylinder during the day.

The team at Right House can help to estimate what your savings might be after talking through these variables with you.

The benefits of a PV system:• Cut your electricity bills: Sunlight is free, so once you’ve paid for the

initial installation your electricity costs will be reduced.• Sell excess electricity back to the grid. What you don’t consume

can be exported back on to the grid and you can receive a credit from your retailer (feed-in tariff)

• Increase the value of your home – homes with energy saving systems are known to sell quicker too.

• They are made to last. There are PV panels delivering power today that were installed more than 30 years ago. All our PV panels carry an output warranty of 25 years.

• Feel good about generating CLEAN electricity• Enjoy knowing that you are protecting yourself from rising

electricity prices

What do architects do?Architects design spaces that are fit for purpose, harmoniously proportioned, appropriately enclosed and protected, and relate well to other spaces and to the wider context. Architects design structures ranging from small additions to existing houses to new office towers. No matter the size of the project, architects respond to an individual brief. Their work is not generic: each design is an answer to a particular set of circumstances. Architecture is a celebration of difference.

Who can call him or herself an architect? The law is clear about who can call him or herself an architect. An architect must have met the academic and professional standards set by the Architects Registration Board, and must be currently registered by the Board. All registered architects are listed on the Board’s website: www.nzrab.co.nz.

Why use an architect?Architects have extensive education and training. They must have completed an

architecture degree, which is now a five-year course, and gained sufficient practical knowledge and experience to satisfy the Architects Registration Board. In order to stay registered, they must take part in

a professional development programme administered by the New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA), the professional organisation to which the great majority of registered Architects belong. Architects can take a building project from site selection and design, through the consenting process to tendering, construction and completion. They know how to manage relationships with Councils, builders, and other consultants, such as quantity surveyors and engineers.

How much will it cost to employ an architect? There’s no set fee rate for an architect’s services. Fees may be calculated by lump sum for each stage of service, or by hourly rate, or by percentage of the contracted works, or by a combination of all three. As for the overall costs of a job, most architects acknowledge that it is now a challenge to keep total project costs for new houses below $2500 per square metre.

A lot of people call themselves designers, and many of them claim to be practising architecture. It’s not surprising, then, that there’s some confusion about architects – who they are and what they do. Here are a few answers to some basic questions.

Where should you start when looking for an architect? A personal recommendation is one route, and perhaps the most reassuring. But even then, it pays to do some research. New Zealand has quite a few magazines devoted to residential architecture, and they’re available in public libraries as well as newsagents and book shops. There are examples of architects’ work on the website of the New Zealand Institute of Architects (www.nzia.co.nz) and another NZIA site (www.architecturenz.net) has a directory of architectural practices which can be searched by location and project type, and which has links to the practices’ own websites. You can find out whether architects are properly qualified – that is, registered as architects – by checking on the website of the New Zealand Registered Architects Board, www.nzrab.org.nz.

The New Zealand Institute of Architects also has a website, www.talktoanarchitect.co.nz, which sets out to demystify the architectural process. On this site, you’ll find straightforward and accessible information about architects and working with architects – what to expect from an architect, how to brief an architect, and the role of the client.

Many, if not most, New Zealand architecture practices, specialise

Finding the Perfect Architect for Youin residential architecture, and their work ranges from new houses to alterations and additions to existing houses. Once you’ve done some research, it might be a good idea to meet with several practices to discuss your project and, on a basic level, find out whether you get on with a particular architect. Building projects can be intense and a successful outcome usually depends on a good relationship between client and architect. Clients must have confidence that they’re being listened to and understood.

Clients should be assertive. They should ask questions of a prospective architect: Is what they want to do possible with their site or existing house? Can it be done within their budget? Who at the architecture practice will be working on the project? At what stages of the design process can a client intervene?

Clients should also be realistic, and be prepared to take expert advice. Architects, are among other things, editors of wish lists and auditors of expectations. Most building projects involve compromise; the quantity of space has to be balanced against the quality of space. But however much space is provided, the point about engaging an architect is that the space you’re paying for is shaped just for you.

“The Darling Hotel presented an irresistible mix of an urban design hotel with an aim to infuse guests with a sense of Sydney’s personality through the fields of art, fashion and design. The entry lobby is the guests’ first introduction to the hotel and our task was to create a welcoming space which whilst architecturally monumental in scale, is warm, inviting and has a sense of fun and occasion. The Designer Rugs, Akira Isogawa rugs filled the lobby with colour; the artwork to us spoke volumes of Sydney’s potent cultural mix and free thinking spirit, whilst adding art and richness to the lobby lounge settings. Designer Rugs played an integral part in customising the scale and colour.” Words by DBI Design. www.dbidesign.com.au

Business owners Delma Harrison and her son Jonathan are excited to be heading into summer with an outstanding range of wonderful landscaping and gardening options. They have just returned from a successful trip to Bali, where they have developed close business ties with local designers and manufacturers. Delma and Jonathan have visited the area many times to source high quality weather-resistant products.

As a result, Palmers Remuera is proud to offer discerning homeowners a unique range garden ornaments, pots and water features. You won’t find these anywhere else!

Eye Magazine visited their Remuera centre and we were particularly impressed with the huge range of outdoor pots that Jonathan showed us, reputed to be the largest in Auckland. Providing a multitude of planting options, many of these pots serve as art objects in their own right – they are superb even unplanted. Check out the fabulous tall Sarung pots with fibre carving or the elegant handmade Vietnamese vases which look wonderful indoors with a simple arrangement of twisted willow.

For a more traditional look, there’s the Brussels plinth and urn, decorative enough to only require a planting of easy-care ivy to provide that finishing touch.

We also checked out some of the other exciting new products, including handcrafted birdbaths, shell ornaments, glass in-laid back lit water features, sandstone statues, figurines and glass plates and bowls. We were amazed at the huge and varied selection of Buddhas; made from stone, concrete and fiberglass, and ranging in size from 20c to 2m.

We then visited on-site Café Greenfingers, a beautiful Balinese-themed café, serving award-winning Karajoz coffee. Kids are well catered for with a children’s menu and a dedicated play area, and the whole place has very easy access, a boon for the elderly. Apart from the extensive menu and cabinet selection, there is a wonderful range of frozen gourmet meals – we will definitely be back when we need a delicious quick meal to throw in the oven!

The benefits of umbrellas are two-fold. They provide shade from the sun, important in summer when exposure to UV can be dangerous, but they are also a fantastic outdoor feature that can really be the finishing touch to your carefully

designed exterior living space. “Lots of people have beautifully developed outdoor decks and

patios and million dollar views. However when summer finally arrives they don’t get the most out of their outdoor area because it’s too hot under the sun,” says Michael Pearce, Managing Director of Shade 7.

“But the solution is simple; a stylish yet functional umbrella can make all the difference in making a plain outdoor area into a more interesting and relaxing area, all while keeping your family and guests

1. Superior strength and ability to withstand wind2. Marine-grade aluminium frame that will never rust3. European acrylic canvas fabric with 5 year warranty4. safe from the harsh summer sun.” And when it comes to the ‘cream of the crop’ for umbrellas, the

Riviera Cantilever Umbrella takes top prize. An elegant and modern side-post umbrella is the ultimate choice for outdoor living and entertaining in both residential and commercial environments. It combines style with strength, size and durability. With multiple tilt settings and 360 degree rotation, Michael says that the Riviera is one of Shade 7’s most popular products and it isn’t hard to see why.

“We have specifically designed this umbrella for New Zealand conditions and there is nothing else on the market that really compares.”

So why choose umbrellas? Again, it’s simple. Sometimes you want shade and sometimes you want sun, so why would you fix a permanent sails or shade structure at great cost when you could have a completely flexible cantilevered umbrella. An umbrella with rotating ability can cover multiple areas, from rotating over your spa for cover from the rain and then over to your dining area for sun protection.

“With an umbrella you can put it up or down, tilt it, rotate it and even have multiple fixings to locate the umbrella around your property. It offers protection from the sun and rain, and then you can put it away when you’re done,” says Michael.

InsulationThere are many ways to insulate a spa. Insulation is very important as it determines how much a spa will cost to operate. The simplest and most common method is to spray a layer of foam onto the spa shell. This system is cheap and easy for the manufacturer; however, it rarely provides what we believe to be adequate levels of insulation. We recommend that one of the following methods is used:

Perimeter insulationUnder this system, the cabinet of the spa is insulated instead of the shell. This ensures that excess heat from the pumps and other equipment is trapped around the spa shell, reducing heating costs. This system has the added advantage of providing noise reduction meaning a quiet nights sleep and happy neighbors.

Full foam insulationFull foam insulation is generally considered to be the best insulation system available. Using this method, the entire cavity between the spa shell and the cabinet is filled with foam giving unsurpassed heat retention properties.

Shell ConstructionSpa shells are formed by heating a flat sheet of coloured acrylic in an oven and then drawing it into a spa mold. After forming, the acrylic

Choosing the Right Spa Three things to consider

sheet becomes very thin – in some places less than 1mm thick. As a result, the acrylic must be strengthened using fiberglass. Because acrylic has a very smooth surface, the first layer of fiberglass must use a special vinyl ester resin, which actually melts itself into the back of the acrylic. If this resin is not used, your spa can delaminate over time. Equally important is that the resins are oven cured. If this step is missed, once again, the spa may delaminate.

FiltrationThere are basically three different methods of running the filtration in a spa. • The simplest method is to use a one-speed pump, which filters,

heats and drives the water to the jets. This system uses the highest amount of power.

• The second system employs a two-speed pump, which uses the pump’s lower speed to filter and heat, and the high speed to drive water to the jets. This system uses less power than a single speed pump.

• The best system uses a dedicated one-speed pump to drive the jets and a smaller circulation pump to heat and filter. Not only does this method use the lowest amount of power for the highest amount of filtration, but it also provides virtually silent running in heating and filtering modes.

Castles, monasteries, churches and museums all make the country a special place to visit. Italy boasts inspiring art exhibitions, music festivals, theatre and ballet performances. A rich combination of culture, breathtaking scenery, and unique landscapes of golden wheat fields and olive groves all culminate to make it a stunning country to visit.

New Zealand enjoys a warm relationship with Italy. Links and awareness between the countries have being strengthened through publicity surrounding New Zealand’s role

in liberating Italy, in World War 2. Both countries often share similar views on major international issues, and tourism is a strong tie with both countries enjoying clean images of one another. And of course, we loved seeing New Zealand play Italy here at home, in last year’s Rugby World Cup!

When we think of Italy, our minds are drawn to Italian food and the Mediterranean diet. Classic and contemporary recipes drawn from Italy’s gastronomic culture, invite us to sample delicious flavours and food made from the finest ingredients. Simplicity meets taste in fine restaurants or ‘off the beaten track’ cafes. Devine cheeses, cured meats, pasta and simple pizzas made from just a few high quality ingredients are all synonymous with Italy. Enjoy a gorgeous glass of Chianti while savoring a delicious meal.

High quality also extends to the streets with fashion, where both Italian men and women are seen beautifully dressed. Italy is a world leader in fashion design where elegance is key. From Elsa Schiaparelli to Robert Cavali, fine shoes, clothes, perfume and jewelry all play an important part in the culture and on the world stage. New Zealand designers often travel to Europe to get a glimpse at Italian style and couture.

Breathtaking scenery, beautiful food and diverse culture and heritage all endear Italy to being a country we love to watch and follow. We can look to their trends and styles for cues and enjoy a small slice of Italy here in our own beautiful country!

There are few better ways to experience Italian culture and cuisine than jetting off on a plane and landing in Rome, Florence or

Naples. But for most of us, this is a luxury we can’t always afford. Nestled in the heart of Wellington’s seaside suburb, Petone, is our own Italian escape, La Bella Italia. This authentic Italian shop and restaurant gives diners the chance to taste delights such as, creamy Buffalo Mozzarella and delicate Prosciutto di Parma, straight from the source. It’s a chance for diners to be immersed in the loud, lively, passionate and vibrant culture

Italian Food at its Finest

that Italy is famous for. La Bella Italia’s journey began long before

she opened in 2002. Founder, Antonio Cacace has always had a passion for Italian food. Born in Massa Lubrense – a paradise in the province of Naples - his earliest memories comprise of delicious cheeses and prosciutto from the Parma markets. When he arrived in New Zealand in 1991, he instantly fell in love with our beautiful country, but soon missed his favourite Italian delicacies. So, in 2002, he opened La Bella Italia with the aim of offering New Zealanders the foods and flavours of his homeland. The secret spread

quickly much like the whisperings in a small Italian town. Antonio’s La Bella Italia proved so popular, that in just a short four years, the restaurant won at the Wellington Region Gold Awards and the La Bella Italia shop was also the overall Top Shop winner. An ardent lover of his Italian heritage, Antonio was then awarded the order of merit by the Italian government in 2007. He holds the title of Cavaliere and is always actively involved with organising the Italian Festival in New Zealand. But not only does he share his Italian culture with New Zealanders, he also shares his recipes. Education plays a very important role

Page 146: Eye Magazine Spring 2012

57

in the La Bella Italia experience. In hands on cooking classes and demonstration dinners, patrons can learn how to create Italian dishes under the guidance of a talented team of chefs from Italy. From fresh Ravioli with Ricotta and Spinach to Agnolotti alla Romana with beef and pork filling, theses meals are often inspired by family recipes which make these classes ideally suited to home cooking.

For those for you who can afford to travel, Antonio can take you on his own unique tour of Italy. A journey of the senses, it’s a tour unlike any other, showcasing the flavours, scents, music and atmosphere that make Italy

so inviting. Antonio will take you to Parma, where the famous Parmigiano Reggiano and Prosciutto di Parma are produced. You’ll explore the romantic rolling hills of Tuscany and the historic sites of Pompeii and Montecassino. He’ll show you the most mouth-watering menus from the very best restaurants, steeped in tradition and passed down from generations. He’ll even take you to his own family hotel on the picturesque Almafi coast where you can learn to cook the very tastes that inspired his award winning restaurant.

Italian cuisine is one of the most loved in the world. So, it’s not surprising that La

Bella Italia is so popular. Our own slice of Italy right here in New Zealand, it is a shop where customers can purchase the very best produce and a restaurant where diners can enjoy the very best meals. It’s a place so deliciously Italian, you’ll feel like you’ve escaped to the colourful Almafi Coast, without ever having to leave our shores.

Open 7 days a week, La Bella Italia is located at 10 Nevis Street, Petone, Wellington so come on in and visit them or send them an email at [email protected].

Food, family and fresh ingredients are the quintessential flavours of Italy. Fratelli, which translates as ‘brothers’, is a restaurant born out

of a desire to combine these elements and introduce the beauty of Italian cooking to Wellington diners.

Located in the heart of Wellington’s entertainment district, the stylish and cosy restaurant offers a semi-formal dining experience and fresh, modern Italian cuisine. In 2009, the Petagna brothers saw that a lack of good Italian restaurants in the capital city provided the perfect opportunity to pool their talents. Older brother Ferdi brought 10 years of professional hospitality experience in front house to the table, while younger brother, Carlo brought the sales background

Brotherly LoveTwo brothers have drawn on their rich cultural heritage to create a superb restaurant celebrating all things Italian.

that gave the business its legs.“It’s about food and family,” says Ferdi.

“That’s why Carlos and I are here together. We’re not just business partners. We wanted to carry on the family heritage and do the things our grandparents used to do.”

The brothers are second generation Italian. Both sets of grandparents emigrated from the small Italian village of Massalubrense, near Sorrento, and settled in the Italian fishing settlement of Island Bay,

in Wellington. Living in a new country meant recreating their Italian traditions anew. “There was no mozzarella, no ricotta, when they arrived in New Zealand,” says Ferdi. “They had to make their own cheeses from scratch.”

The new immigrants built big glasshouses in their backyards to cultivate the fresh vegetables so important to Italian cuisine. To this day, Ferdi and Carlos’ grandparents grow their own acid free Italian tomatoes to make their traditional homemade tomato sauce.

The brothers have kept the family recipe very much alive and every morning the rich sauce begins its slow simmer on the restaurant stove. “Our sauce takes 9 hours to make,” says Ferdi. “The secret to a really good sauce is that the longer you leave it, the better it is.”

The restaurant focuses on the concept of Fresh Italian, which is about marrying the authentic flavours of old, traditional Italy with new, modern ideas. Freshness is a byword.

Page 148: Eye Magazine Spring 2012

59

Everything is made on site, with the restaurant making its own 100% homemade pastas, gnocchi, stocks and ice creams every day.

To showcase the best of New Zealand’s seasonal ingredients, the whole menu changes about 6 times a year. In addition, Fratelli loves to treat diners to daily specials that highlight New Zealand’s more fleeting seasonal delights. This spring, the restaurant looks forward to lots of freshly caught seafood and authentic Italian dishes like lightly battered zucchini flowers stuffed with creamy goats cheese, and anchovy crusted spring lamb on a bed of light and tender gnocchi.

Fratelli specializes in delicious, authentic pizzas served piping hot from the restaurant’s wood-fired oven. While crucial to achieving perfect pizza, the traditional oven is also an essential tool in other areas of Italian cuisine. The restaurant uses it to smoke fresh fish, salmon and brisket, and to roast plump, succulent mussels.

A predominantly Italian wine list completes the true Italian dining experience, offering diners a wide array of fine Italian reds, whites and bubbles. A small selection of exceptionally nice, boutique New Zealand wines adds a touch of Kiwi flavour.

In keeping with the typical Italian family way of dining, Fratelli offers group friendly dishes, like shared antipasto platters. Every Tuesday diners can indulge in the Fratelli Feast, with a 3-course meal for $35. Available for private functions, the restaurant has a stylish, contemporary ambience, with an intimate wood floored front section and a larger, carpeted dining area.

From humble beginnings in 2000, a small red caravan parked on the side of Kennedy Road in Napier, Thai Chef’s has established itself as

one of New Zealand’s most precious Thai restaurants.

With speciality dishes like ‘Chicken Erection’, ‘Naughty Pig’, ‘Sexy Little Duck’ and ‘The Three Alcoholics’, you can presume there is quite a bit of humour that goes into creating the Thai Chef’s menu, but when it comes to creating and cooking their cuisine, it is a very serious matter.

“Our restaurants use the complete real Thai recipes that do not cut corners or save on cost,” says Natttachai Changrattanachaichok, also known affectionately as Chang.

“We are one of only a few Thai restaurants that have received the precious Thai Select Premium Award from the Royal Thai Government, and it is this label that bestows the authenticity of Thai cuisine.”

In 2005 Thai Chef’s had a surprise visit from the Thai Ambassador to New Zealand, His Excellency Norachit Singhasanee. He gave Chang and the team a big thumb ups for their exotic, authentic Thai cuisine

A Refined Dining Experience

and it was from that day that Thai Chef’s popularity started to grow at a rapid rate. Today there are Thai Chef’s restaurants in Wellington, New Plymouth, Mangonui in the Far North, Parnell in Auckland and of course, Napier.

After only opening this year, their location in Parnell is fast becoming very popular in the Auckland market, and is a great addition to such a successful chain of Thai Restaurants. There are plenty of car parks available on site through Bath Street and perhaps most importantly, beside the building for easy disabled access and quick takeaway pick up.

So head along to your nearest Thai Chef’s restaurant to meet Chang and enjoy the refined dining experience of Royal Thai Cuisine.

“Our curries are also second to none, so please try our unique Palace’s recipe “Royal Panang” and “Duck in Love” which is Red

Duck Curry. Our menu is something remarkable from the usual Thai cuisine, that’s the reason our slogan is ‘Extraordinarily Different’.”

Thirty lucky participants from 16 Restaurants based in Sydney, Auckland and Wellington recently enjoyed Central Otago hospitality courtesy of a local company with a difference.

Nevis Bluff Wines, named after its birthplace in the Gibbston Valley, produces premium Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris but has an unusual marketing angle - it doesn’t sell its wine in wine shops or supermarkets.

New Zealand Marketing Manager, Julia Spark explains that due to Nevis Bluff’s strategy of only making wine in the years when medal quality wine can be assured, the Company can only supply key restaurants and online sales. “Central Otago has an unforgiving climate and while this means great wines can be produced in some years, in wet or unseasonal seasons the grapes simply do not reach the balance of brix and acidity required for great wines,” comments Julia.

“We have a grape selection philosophy of keeping the best grapes and selling the rest to less demanding producers which precluded some Nevis varieties in 2005 and 2007”. Consequently there is generally not sufficient production for mass marketing.

Available at many upscale Auckland, Wellington and Sydney restaurants the company annually rewards its most loyal customers with a weekend of interaction, education and relaxation.

Staying at the upscale Hotel St Moritz in late October, a cruise on

Lake Wakatipu aboard the super launch Pacific Jemm ensured guests got to know each other as they discussed current trading conditions. The next day, the group travelled in convoy down to Bannockburn and over into the magnificentNevis Valley when 72-year old Lex McLean, whose family have lived on and off in the Nevis since his grandmother first arrived in 1867, came along as tour guide. Lex pointed out pioneering and gold mining relics and all present were moved when viewing Grandma’s grave (died 1904), in the old cemetery. This is “big sky” country and one of Godzones vast undiscovered treasures that impresses all visitors, especially when accompanied by a picnic lunch beside the Nevis River whilst enjoying a tipple of great Nevis Bluff wine.

Back to Queenstown late afternoon for a vertical tasting and gala degustation dinner, matched with a variety of Nevis Bluff wines and its winemaker Dean Shaw as dinner speaker. Next time you get a restaurateur waxing lyrically about Nevis Bluff wine, you known where they’ve been!

If you own a restaurant that wants a serious wine partner, then feel free to give Nevis Bluff a call. Plans for the next adventure weekend are already underway.

Citadel by Kate MosseThis is an impressive ‘time-slip’ novel that encompasses two story lines, both set in the south of France. One story concerns a monk and an ancient script, while the main story is set during World War II with the exploits of the Resistance. This is a bittersweet, beautifully written novel. How did you first become involved in music and what age did you start? My mother was a classically trained pianist and both my parents had great taste in music. They would take me to amazing concerts like The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Bon Jovi etc from a really early age, actually my first ever concert was Poison in 88’! Dad knew three chords on the guitar and he taught me those… hooked. Who do you regard as your role models? What have been your biggest inspirations? I admire those who were/are the biggest in music. Michael Jackson, Guns n Roses, Metallica etc, they all wanted to be the best & achieved that. I actually love the ones who speak out about what they truly believe in the most too, sometimes to their own detriment but it is so freeing saying your core truth. What has been the best part about being in the NZ Music Industry? Playing live. Performing face to face in front of your fans and pursuing the quest to win over new ones. Nothing beats having a song that you’ve written sung back to you by a complete stranger. Biggest highlight of 2012?Was opening for LA Rockers Steel Panther at The Powerstation a few weeks ago combined with hearing that my album debuted at number #11 on the NZ Music Charts. It’s so satisfying seeing something that you’ve worked so hard at and for so long start to grow and become recognised. If you had to choose an alternative career, what would it be? I reckon’ owning my own bar in the Caribbean somewhere where it’s summer all year round, pouring the odd cocktail and hosting

travellers, hearing thousands of stories and sharing a few of my own. Something like the movie Cocktail with Tom Cruise? Yeah I’m envisioning something like that ;) If you were Prime Minister for a day, what would be the first thing you would change?I would ban cigarettes completely. I’ve smoked for a massive amount of my life and even though I have enjoyed it from time to time, it does NOTHING good for you and being a singer in a rock band ya just cannot do both. So yeah I’d replace them on the shelf with Spaceman Cigs.

What are your plans for 2013?I’ve just applied for my band to play at the South by Southwest music conference in Texas

60 Seconds with a Celeb Franko

in March so if we get that then I want to turn that opportunity into a US Tour, so fingers crossed that all comes together! What TV show can’t you miss? Breaking Bad, hands down the best show in the last 5 years. Sons of Anarchy and Homeland are musts too.

What do you never leave the house without? My opportunity eyes and a guitar pick.

Best advice you have been given? What anyone thinks of you is none of your business. www.frankomusic.comwww.theaudience.co.nz/franko

There are not that many people with whom you can be friends. I had a brief foray into living in provincial NZ and found that out of a population of about 3,000, there were about 10 people with whom I could have been friends.

Impediments are many and varied: someone is religious, for example. “I took the kids to church on Sunday” – feet, do your stuff. There

are social differences, although I can skull Lion Red if the occasion demands. There are economic differences. There are people whom you hate just by looking at them; how that happens, I don’t know, but there’s just something about them that makes your skin crawl (a likely reason for my abysmal failure at attracting girlfriends at school). It gets worse: even if I could find my 10 or so possible friends, you can bet that a fair proportion of them would not want me as a friend because they’d hate me on sight or I’d have offended them in one or more ways which are entirely natural to me. Then, if you’re a couple, one of a couple might hate one of the other couple etc and, all of a sudden, 10 out of 3,000 is looking highly ambitious.

I hope you don’t mind but I feel I must digress to my just-used singular verb: “10 out of 3,000 is looking … .” Is it acceptable or not? I’m really saying “a group of 10 …”, am I not? Who knows? I’m uncertain (although slightly cocky but there you go) but at least I’m thinking about it. Another reason why I might not want someone for a friend is if that person has a cavalier attitude to grammatical standards; how could I love someone who misuses “disinterested”? Or who says “Nothink”? (I started the sentence with “Or”, by the way, for effect, alright???) (The two extra question marks were for effect also).

I suppose you’re dying to hear how provincial NZ and I came to blows? Well, while trying to fit in, I attended the opening night of the squash club, which doubled as a stag-do for one of the members (“Warning, Will Robinson!”). I turned up in white overalls, ready for action, and was pitted against the local vet in the drinking races. There were unjustified cries of “spillage” from the locals, determined to sort out the vet and me, which necessitated a re-run. I thought it best to make room, so I barfed over the balcony onto the paddocks below in order to compete at my best – perfectly acceptable behaviour in the circumstances. On the Monday, my employer observed that it was inappropriate for someone in my position to have done such a thing; I’d resigned by lunchtime.

Anyway, the point of all this is to observe that it doesn’t take much for someone to disqualify himself or herself from the category of “possible friend”. So, to the gym, where I explore the many and varied

Mr. Opinionatorways for someone to become disqualified as a possible (from a bloke’s perspective).

Disqualification risks: 1. Inside the changing room, he’s on his mobile yapping away and

sounding business-important. It’s a double fault if he gives the caller a bollocking for all to hear.

2. He takes his mobile into the gym itself and keeps looking at it.3. The odd grunt at the end of a set of exercises, as you struggle

to complete, is perfectly acceptable, but do not come into the changing room while I’m there and exhale, grunt or pose just to show how hard your workout was. Sitting down and shutting-up works for me.

4. Mr Floppy – look, it’s clear some guys are inordinately proud of their hardware but it embarrasses most of the room if someone:

a. Stands there, stark bollocky, facing into the middle of the room, with Mr Floppy for all to see and admire.

b. Walks to and from the shower with a towel over his shoulder with no attempt whatsoever to cover up (I’m only saying this for effect) “God’s gift to womankind”.

c. Comes back from the shower and: i. While facing the rest of us, gives that magnificent weapon a

jolly good towelling, so much so that you’re thinking “Snakes on a Plane”; or

ii. Stands in front of the mirror, stark bollocky, while he does his hair, applies lotions or, sometimes, simply admires the vision. Add a bonus point in the hatred stakes if the owner of the world’s greatest Schlange actually applies lotions etc to it.

iii. Is an undeniable ginge – sorry but that’s the way it is.5. Self-admiration – it is a discrete offence to have a taut body and

to stand there for the purpose of letting punes such as myself feel inadequate.

6. I regret to have to add a post-script to this sordid report (colon, semi-colon or full-stop? Arggggghhh – go for the colon) … : In a very recent visit to the gym, one of the Mr Floppy Brigade came in to get changed for his workout. It was no surprise when he dropped his daks and strutted his stuff a bit but, dear reader (yes, singular based on Neilson), somewhat horrifically, he went commando underneath a pair of grey cotton shorts. Pluck out my mind’s eye. Wait ‘til I get onto mothers.
