ExxonMobil Lube Oils & Specialities (L&S) businesscovers two lube-oil blending plants (Uddevalla inSweden and Naantali in Finland), distribution, storageand sales activities in - and outside the Nordic countries. In addition to our ISO 14001 attestation forOIMS, our lube oil blending plants are formally ISO14001 certified. Substitution of hazardous materials inlube oil additives, prevention and mitigation of spillsand reduction of waste have continuous focus in L&Sas well as energy efficiency programs at Uddevallaand Naantali.

Eight ExxonMobil owned oil terminals in Norway andtwo in Finland are administrated and operated by theDistribution organisation. These activities includestorage and distribution of mofuels, distillates andfuel oils in all parts of the Nordic countries. Focusareas are spill protection from harbour and storagetank operation, minimized VOC emissions by efficientVapour Recovery Units (VRU's) at all gasoline storageterminals, and environmental investigation and remediation of closed terminals. Protection of spill and leakage from the operation isdone by use of safe procedures and inspection andmaintenance programs founded on sound risk analysisand international standards. To ensure an efficient oilspill response, there are yearly training of personnelincluding communication aspects and use of miscellaneous mitigation equipment.

Slagen Refinery in Norway is among the most energyefficient refineries in the world with low emissions toair and water. A public report with all main environmental goals, emissions and future emissionreduction plans is issued every year (in Norwegian).

«We’re drivers too». Safest drivingroutes to all gasoline stations aremapped, documented and agreedwith the truck driving companies.

More than 500 gasoline stations in Norway andFinland are included in the responsibility of FuelsMarketing. In addition they have several smaller storage facilities for fuels and fuel oil. Focus areasare no spills at site or during truck transport of products by third party. Safe, efficient and environmental sound investigation and remediation ofclosed gasoline stations is also an important area ofconcern. In addition there are programs to reduce andrecycle waste from product packaging. To prevent leakage from underground tanks at thegasoline stations, there are installed double walledtanks with leak detection system for a number of stations, and daily checks are performed of tanklevels against consumption. To ensure safe transportof products, there are close co-operation with thetruck driving companies with regard to proceduresand training. Safest driving routes to all gasoline stations are mapped, documented and agreed.

ExxonMobil has comprehensive programs to increaseenergy efficiency for its operation and is among theindustry leaders in this field.During the last three years projects have been implemented resulting in energy savings equivalentto the electric power consumption for 900.000European households.

To ensure proper investigation and sound remediationof former industrial sites, terminals and gasoline stations, ExxonMobil has established a worldwidegroup of highly skilled experts to co-ordinate and execute these type of projects.

Research and development

ExxonMobil's research centres in USA have internationalexpertise in the area of environmental effects and technology. There are comprehensive research programson development of fuels for increased motor efficiencyand reduced emissions, including co-operation projectswith Toyota to develop hybrid cars and fuel cell technology for reduced emissions of CO2.

ExxonMobil invests 100 million dollars over ten years inthe Global Energy & Climate Project led by the StanfordUniversity in USA. This is an industry co-operation project with a total project cost of 225 million dollars. The intent is to develop new technology for the future toreduce emission of greenhouse gases (e.g. production anduse of hydrogen, utilisation of biological processes andadvanced motor technology with low energy consumption).
