Unit 9 Photography Techniques
By Bonnie Bray
Extra Ordinary Maxim Emelyanov
Maxim Emelyanov is a Russian photographer and ar?st. He fell for the idea of a 'metaphoric connec?on to another world’ through photography. He plays with very unusual techniques. for his project “Crimea”, he shot on medium format DS4 film that had expired 30 years ago. One of his technics is to bury his photos in a graveyard as a symbolic gesture to connect the past with the present. Here are some quotes from an interview he had-‐ He said he takes his photos because “I want to show the fragility of our world, the depth and ?meless beauty of nature”. Dazed Digital: Your images are like looking through a forbidden key hole into the world we actually live in. What does this layering of your work mean to you? Maxim Emelyanov: “Everything in the world streams from one source and each object regardless of ?me, source or place is unique but bears a par?cle of commonality. I'd like to find the connec?on between me and the world around. The photographs are findings I like to share, each one a detailed descrip?on of the whole.”
Mind map of ideas
• Macro work • Trees, natural and unnatural nature based landscapes,
animals, trees, the sky. • I can change the colour of them to like to my ar?sts work. • Blend 2 photos together to look like one photo.

Planning first photo shoot.
Ligh?ng They will be shot out side so I will use natural ligh?ng. Props objects and nature that I can find Models I will not use any models studio/ loca?on Rainham marshes, London greenery, my garden Dates 22nd of march – 16th April Equipment e.g. tripod I will use a camera and tripod Health and safety considera?ons. stay away from the ducks and the pond because you could fall in Watch where you walk because the ground can be uneven. Edi?ng I like the way the photographer has changed the coloures of their photos so I feel to link my work to theirs I will also do this with some of my photos.
Evalua?on on the photos above-‐ I think my photos are very effec?ve because they are exactly how I wanted them to be. They have the right framing and con?nuity that I wanted them to Have and are really well lit. I like the way the ?nted coloures I added to them make them link to my ar?st and link to his style of work and also that it gives the photos their own effects. The colouring sets the moods of the photos and brings them to life more by making them different and more interes?ng to look at than just photo of trees. The framing of the photos is very well done because I believe that they are all very different through out the photos and can represent t the individuality of them and can show that nothing is the same. It also shows that not one piece of nature is the same as the other, for example finger prints. In some of the photos the main focus takes up the whole surface area of the photo and takes the whole of the viewers a^en?on but on others there is nega?ve space and the viewers a^en?on is focused on one item in the photo. I think my choice of ar?st is very effec?ve because they taught me a lot about how colouring in photos can change them and change the mood of the photos. They also made me see how interes?ng nature can be and how we can take great photo from very simple things like trees. I think my project went very well and that if I where to reshoot these photos I wouldn’t change anything about them apart from the focusing in some of the photos. In some of the photos it shows depth of field and I like the look of that so I would like to capture that more and give the photos a 3D effect. If I where to re-‐shoot the photos I would use this technique more and give to give them this effect.
Evalua?on on the photos above-‐ I like these photos a lot because of the colouring and framing of them. I like how one has a lot of nega?ve space and the other two do not. This makes them different to each other. None of my pictures look exactly the same although they both have the same subject as well as extremely similar colours. I think that they are okay. They could be be^er if they where more in focus. This would make them more clear and a lot more clean looking. I think my ar?st choice really helped me with these photos because it helped me come up with the choice to change the colours of them and to look at nature more for inspira?on in my work. This helped me come up with the idea to use trees as silhoue^es against the sky. I think the project went very well because the photos are very pre^y and interes?ng to look at also I think they are very unique. I think they could be improved by being focused more. If I where to do the project again I would make sure I focus the camera more.
jiri kolar I like the way they make two photos look like one by overlapping them and cu`ng pieces out.
Evalua?on on the photo above-‐ I think what I have done with the two photos above is very effec?ve because it make two photos look like one image. This makes the photos look more interes?ng and captures the viewers eye more because they have to stop and look at it and think about what is going on in the photo. The colouring and ligh?ng in these photos are very different because one uses high key ligh?ng and the other uses low key ligh?ng. In the high key ligh?ng one I have used a photo of the sky and clouds with another photos of a tree. I edited the photos separately to change the colouring and brightness of them then I placed one on top of the other and cut out strips of it to show parts of the other photo underneath. I did the same with the other photo for the same effect. I think the framing in both photos is very good because the main focus in both is in the centre of the photo which pulls the viewers eye to the most. Both photos have nega?ve space so they make the subject of the photos stand out even more. I think the choice of this ar?est is very good because they showed me that I can create one very interes?ng image with two very simple images. This also showed me that there are loads of ways to edit and blend photos and to make them more eye catching with out the use of bright colours and bold images.
