I N T R O D U C T I O N Welcome to the Extra Curricular Activities booklet from Berlin Brandenburg International School 2017/2018 Term 1. We strongly encourage all students to participate in this program as it offers a unique opportunity to meet new friends, be a risk-taker, and share and learn new passions whilst having fun! The program enables students to learn new skills and fully become part of our international school community. The ECA program aims to further open the minds and eyes of our students, to provide them with something new and challenging to look forward to. We are therefore excited to be able to offer such diverse activities as chamber music, international award, athletic activities, and many more new activities. We are very fortunate with the generosity and commitment of the BBIS staff, as well as external and volunteer instructors; however, it is sometimes impossible to offer activities all year round. This does however, provide our students with a greater opportunity to try different activities throughout the year. Sincerely yours, Felipe Buitrago

– Payment category: External – Grade levels: Age 0-10 – Activity leader: Kristin Perry – Contact email: [email protected] – Days: Saturday, 23 September 2017 – Time: 10:00 – Duration: one day – Costs: €10 – Limit: Unlimited – Location: Park am Gleisdreieck (south of Potsdamer Platz)

Description: The BMW Berlin Marathon offers the Bambini running series for elementary school children in Berlin. The races will be held on Saturday, 23 September beginning at 10:45. The race is held at the Park am Gleisdreieck (south of Potsdamer Platz).

The idea behind the Bambini Running series is “Kids love to move”. Kids are to be introduced to sports through play. Running as the basis of movement is a great way to start. After taking their first steps, children explore the world around them by walking and running.

The Bambini Running series offers the perfect space for kids to continue to develop their natural desire to move: Kids can come together with their friends and families and have fun being active in sports at seven different running events. They can participate in one Bambini race or as many as they want, they can come prepared or just come as they are and they can run as fast or slow as they want. Whatever they want, no times will be kept, no rankings listed – it is just about having fun!

The Bambinis thus experience sport as something unstressed and positive. And without even noticing it, they are learning values through sport such community, fairness, continuity, self-initiative and self-confidence, taking their own personal development one step further.

The first race begins at 10:45. We will meet at 10:00 for a team photo, location TBA (most likely will be the corner of Obentrautstr./Moeckernstr.) Parents are responsible for transport to and from the park and must supervise their children at all times. All runners should wear their BBIS sport clothes.

The Bambini races (either 600m or 1000m) are for children up to 10 years old. The age groups are as follows:

Age 0-4y 600m

Age 5-6y 600m

Age 7-8y 1000m

Age 9-10y 1000m

All runners receive a certificate and medal (upon completion of the race). We will need parents to help organize the runners and maintain a meeting point for after the races. Please let me know if you are

Parents can run with their children in this age group strollers/baby carriers included

The four-member team for this competition will be selected by January 2018 and the selection criteria is based on student's overall performance (accuracy and speed in completing tasks), team spirit and active participation in the Junior Math Club. This course seeks to introduce students in the basics of creative writing. This course will provide a space for beginner writers to come together to exchange their work and give each other feedback. Participants will be asked to bring a text, which will be read aloud during the class and commented in the group. This practice of reading in front of others aims at helping participants gain more confidence about their own writing as well as it gives them the opportunity to encounter first hand the reaction of the reader. Through the practice of giving each other feedback, participants will learn to detect what elements do and don't work in a story. The second part of the session will be dedicated to performing different kinds of writing exercises, aimed at gaining speed, helping with the usual writer's block, prompting ideas and finding one's own tone and voice. Small excerpts from important texts will also be read in the session in order to show by matter of example what the elements that make up a good story are, how to develop strong characters and construct a coherent storyline.

Valentina Ramona de Jesús (Colombia/Australia) graduated from the IB school Mahindra United World College of India. She studied Cultural Studies and Philosophy at the Jacobs University Bremen and finished her Master's degree in Comparative Literature at the Freie Universität Berlin. Don’t despair, help is at hand! Perhaps you need to think about joining the Get Organised Group (GOG). We are a student self help group, which focuses on teaching young people the necessary skills to improve their personal organisational skills, both academically and personally. All members join on a voluntary basis and not because either their teachers or parents force them to! All members need to already recognise that they have a problem with their personal organisation, but are now self motivated to do something about this. The group in the past has helped many students to remember their homework, keep their rooms tidy and improve their grades. Our new members’ first organisational challenge will be to remember to just turn up on time for our first meeting! For more information, please contact Mr. Gregory (Head of School Counselling & Secondary School Counsellor) via [email protected] (Room 3115, Haus 3), Tel. 033203 8036 320.

We offer members a chance to draw upon their imaginations (rather than their computers) to play table top strategic games like classic old school “pen & paper” role playing games, such as Dungeons and Dragons (D&D), using dice and miniatures.

Students are responsible for purchasing their own figures, dice, drinks and snacks, although you will not initially need anything, other than snacks and drinks. Free hardcopies and pdfs will be available for all RPG gaming rules on Managebac, which we also use for communicating and tracking our adventures and character development.

Gaming options may include: Warhammer Fantasy RPG, Warhammer Fantasy Battle, Warhammer 40k, Dungeons and Dragons, Advanced Dungeons and Dragons (1st ed. – 5th ed.), Traveller, Mega Traveller, Labyrinth Lord, Mutant Futures, Call of Cthulhu, and Shadowrun.

We are currently in the middle of playing an ongoing Labyrinth Lord (Basic Dungeons and Dragons) campaign, which will be run by Tilde (Grade 10) and supported by Mr. Gregory, and we are about to begin playing an Advanced Dungeons and Dragons campaign which will be run by Mr. Gregory.

Come along and join us for an afternoon of creativity, high fantasy and science fiction. The sessions normally run until 5.30pm, and students who wish to stay until 5.30pm will be required to get home independently of the late bus. All students will require parental permission in order to do this. Preferential places will be given to last years’ members, who wish to continue in the club, but new members are very welcome. As you complete the distance, you will run through the Brandenburg Gate on your way to the finish line. Further, shortly after the end of the mini-marathon, the inline skaters finish their race. It´s worth watching them because it is the fastest race in the world and the inline skaters break the world record nearly every year. After submitting your ECA registration, there will be a Mini Marathon group created on ManageBac. All documents, race information, parent permission forms, etc. will be posted on the group page. We need a minimum of 10 runners per team (HS Girls, HS Boys, ES Girls and ES Boys) in order to be eligible for a team score/ranking. Each school can have as many runners as wanted. They take the top 10 runners from each school and add up their time to determine the combined team time.

Antje Rux VOICE

Antje Rux is a lyrical soprano and singing teacher. She graduated from the Music College in Weimar in Lyrical singing and Functional vocal pedagogy (Rabine Method). Afterwards she successfully completed one year of Baroque Singing in Naples/ Italy and studied Acting in Berlin. She won the Interpretation Prize of the opera festival “Oper-Oder-Spree” 2009 and in 2010 she was finalist in the 8th international Baroque singing competition Francesco Provenzale in Naples. As a soloist she has a large repertoire of Oratories, Opera arias and

Baroque music and performs at festivals and opera houses in Europe (Paris, Lille, Bruxelles, Amsterdam, Luxembourg, Berlin). Her focus is on the Baroque and Classical repertoire and Lied. She is a passionate and experienced vocal coach and teaches at the „Singakademie zu Berlin“ and at BBIS. Functional voice training is an approach, which reduces pressure in the production of sound to a minimum, while consistently orientating itself towards the body’s natural physiological functioning. A new relationship between sound and body allows a rich, self- sustaining sound to develop, as well as great flexibility and assurance while music- making or speaking. Johannes Haage ELECTRIC & ACOUSTIC GUITAR, ELECTRIC BASS

Born and raised in Hamburg, Germany, Johannes Haage started playing music on violin from age 5, but switched to guitar about eight years later. As a high-school exchange student in Portland, Oregon he started playing jazz regularly and continued to do so back home. He started his college education at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen, but soon transferred to Berlin to successfully finish his studies with Diplomas both in music performance (popular and classical) and education at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler.

Over the years his travels playing and studying music took him to places like the Center of the Arts in Banff, Canada, and New York City where he had the chance to play with and deepen his studies with Bill Frisell, Brad Shepik, Ben Monder, Mark Turner, Dave Douglas, Drew Gress, Ralph Alessi and many others. In Berlin he has been a very active member of the vital music scene since moving there in 2002, playing with many different musicians like Ben Kraef, Philipp Gropper, Richard Koch, Oli Steidle, the SLOWTRIO w/ Simon Bauer & Brendan Dougherty, Diego Pinera, Christian Ugurel and many more. The Johannes Haage Trio, featuring Andreas Lang on bass and Sebastian Merk on drums, released the critically acclaimed album „Johannes Haage Trio plays Marlene Dietrich“ on Meta Records in late 2010. Besides the many loose collaborations and gigs as sideman he currently enjoys very much playing in a collaborative Trio with bassist Matthias Pichler and drummer Joe Smith, who released their debut Album "Drift" in 2016 on shoebill music. Johannes has taught instrumental music lessons professionally for nearly twenty years and has been part of the BBIS Co-Curricular music staff for the last ten. Regardless of the level of a student and style of music in focus, his goal in teaching is always to inspire the students’ own inherent creativity via improvisation, composition and playing with other musicians, but also to give the student a solid foundation in instrumental technique, music theory, music notation and the stylistic history of the instrument. He has been coordinating the Co-Curricular Music Program since 2015. Contact: Johannes Haage [email protected] 0179 520 61 49
