"It wasn't the apartment, or the view that made assisted living feel like home to my mother. It was the kindness and caring nature of the staff, the friendly smiles from her neighbors, and the opportunities to be involved in many activities every day."

If you haven’t stopped in to see Shawn and Shawn’s Barber Shop and Shave Parlor now is the time. The shop, which is located on the north side of the square, has been offering professional, classic and modern haircuts for men and hot towel services, shave treatments and facial massages since September.

Owner Shawn Smith said there’s no better feeling than having someone depend on him for their appearance. The shop is the only place in Indianola that offers a traditional service and shows a younger generation a long-standing tradition while providing a nostalgic atmosphere for the older generation.

“Having people get up out of my chair excited and completely happy with something I did for them is my favorite part,” Smith said. “There’s nothing more gratifying than that.”

The shop will be adding a second barber, Shawn Haber, in about six months. Haver is currently fi nishing his training at a barber college. The shop will also start offering pomade and grooming products soon.

Smith said the best part about his shop are the community members who are loyal to the small businesses in Indianola, to whom he is grateful.

Shawn’s is currently open Tuesday thru Friday from 10am to 7pm and Saturday 10am - 4pm and also accepts walk-in customers.

Guilt-free desserts to please the whole family

(BPT) - Dinner is over and your family is craving something sweet to end the meal. There are plenty of delicious options to satisfy even the biggest sweet tooth while keeping your family's balanced diet in check. Best of all, these desserts can be made right in your own kitchen. By preparing your own creations, you can please even the pickiest of eaters and give your kids some extra nutrients with hidden servings of fruits or vegetables. The whole family will applaud your e[ orts.

Whole fruit ice creamIf you love frozen treats, try a healthier, homemade ice

cream using whole fruit. Create a quick raspberry ice cream by combining 1 cup milk, 3/4 cup sugar or your favorite sweetener, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla and 1 pound frozen raspberries in a Vitamix 5200. Turn on the blender and slowly increase the speed from one to 10, using the tamper to push the mixture down. In less than a minute, you'll have a creamy, soft-serve style ice cream. You can make a variety of fl avors by substituting blueberries, peaches, pineapple, strawberries or other frozen fruit for the raspberries.

Non-dairy "ice cream"Whip up a batch of green

apple ice cream for a non-dairy, vegan alternative to traditional ice cream. Your kids will love the green hue of this after-dinner delight. Plus, they'll get an extra helping of spinach, which is loaded with vitamins - especially A, C and K - on

top of antioxidants and minerals like potassium and iron. Simply add 6 ounces of thawed apple juice concentrate, a peeled banana, 1 1/2 cups fresh spinach and 4 cups ice into your Vitamix. Blend on high for about 40 seconds and you'll have a healthy dessert for your family to enjoy. The kids will never know this non-dairy delight is also nutritious.

Satisfying dessert (or snack)For an easy option that will keep you full well into the

evening hours, create a fruit and yogurt parfait. Fill a tall glass with alternating layers of Greek yogurt, fresh fruit and granola. Popular for its thick, creamy texture and rich taste, Greek yogurt is typically lower in sugar and higher in calcium and protein than regular yogurt. Mix in a touch of honey for extra sweetness. Your family will love the varied fl avors and textures. Plus, you can choose any combination you like - from the classic vanilla yogurt with fresh berries, to strawberry yogurt with peaches. A parfait is also a smart breakfast option, providing the calories and energy needed to keep your kids moving throughout the morning.

Avocado-based mousseEveryone knows that avocado makes a great guacamole,

but did you know it can also be used in desserts such as mousse, pudding, sorbet and ice cream? It may sound strange, but the fruit's rich, creamy texture lends itself well to many sweet treats. For the chocolate lover in your family, try a smooth chocolate avocado mousse. This raw food recipe uses avocadoes, almond milk, dates and coconut butter for the base, along with cocoa or carob powder for the chocolate fl avor. It's best to prepare the mousse ahead of time or while dinner cooks, because it needs to chill for at least an hour before serving. Top with fresh berries or a bit of shaved chocolate for those with an extra-strong sweet tooth.

Making dessert at home puts you in control of the ingredients. It's also a great way to increase the level of vitamins, minerals and healthy nutrients in your family's diet. Fruit is naturally sweet, so it's a great place to start. To enhance fl avor even more, experiment with other natural sweeteners, such as agave nectar, honey or stevia in place of granulated sugar.

Whether dessert is a nightly ritual in your household or an occasional treat, use these ideas to satisfy your family's cravings.

Here are the results of the 2014 Des Moines Truck Brokers

Charity Bracket Challenge. After hearing the charities who had been selected and their reasons why, DMTB decided to double the donations. Here are your winners and the charities they chose:Dan Roepke – the TRK Group - $500Dan Chose to donate to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Student Center in Ames, IA. In the heart of Iowa State Universities campus, Dan says that for many students it is their “home away from home.”Elizabeth Braun – William F. Braun Milk Hauling Inc. – $300Elizabeth chose the American Syringomyelia & Chiari Alliance Project (asap.org). This organization touches her personally and we would like to share with you her story: “I have chosen this charity because it is dear to me. In 2002 I was diagnosed with an Arnold Chiari brain malformation (basically my skull didn’t fully form and my brain is trying to fall out and put pressure on my spinal cord). At the time this disorder was not very well known and was not generally found in adults or without other disorders linked to it such a cerebral palsy. The disorder can cause a multitude of symptoms ranging from a mild headache, memory loss, mobility issues all the way up to paralysis if not treated. Currently I deal with a constant mild headache on a daily basis which some days those will turn into a severe migraine. I will eventually have to have surgery, but at the current time I am just dealing with what comes day by day. The main reason I chose this charity is not necessarily because of my experiences with the disorder, but more for the young children that are dealing with this. Some of them have worse symptoms than I do and deserve a fi ghting chance in this world and the hope for a cure.” We wish her the best and hopefully we can help raise some awareness.Matt Barker – Fareway Stores – $200Matt is involved in and would like to donate to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa. Matt wants the money to go towards food for the kids, many do not get an evening meal when they return home. “It’s very important for youngsters to feel cared about and have a positive infl uence to look up to.”

Having been in business in Indianola, we always supported what was good for the community. We felt The Village was deD nitely a good thing, though we were not “ready” to move in. Diagnosed with cancer, Don insisted that it was indeed time for me to move. He knew that the Continuing Care design of The Village would insure that I would be helped in any way needed. Having a home to sell made the D rst steps workable. Since moving into a townhome at The Village, I have found that the expenses are no more than it would have been in my

previous home. There are no inside or exterior maintenance charges. Snow removal and lawn care are all provided. Twice a month a cheerful housekeeper comes to help keep my townhome looking good. Seasonally, my windows are washed. If I lived in one of the apartments, I would never have to venture outside in this frigid weather unless I chose to. Everything I might need would be inside. I have lived at the Village for thirteen years, it is home and a lifestyle I am pleased to share with good neighbors and good staE . Though I am very independent, I am secure.

Five prodigiously competent trumpet masters, in no way starchy, will guide you with lightness, smartness and brilliance through all ages, forms and tones of their wonderful trumpets. The ensemble was born in 1989 from the meeting of fi ve musicians trained in the academies of music and universities of Lyon, France. Today these very same musicians still compose that quite unique music group. While pursuing their classical training, these musicians have progressively let their taste for “quirky fun” run loose on stage – which has resulted in unabashedly entertaining and humorous shows that have met with ever increasing success. Just another way of saying that this is a really fun show – full of laughs – along with their fabulous musical talents.

WARREN COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORP.

GroWARRENow Investor Spotlight:Peoples Bank

Peoples Bank, a silver-level investor in the GroWARRENow initiative, is a locally owned full service bank that o[ ers the most up-to-date products and services to meet every banking need. Peoples Bank has been serving Warren County since 1998 and has locations in Carlisle, Indianola, Lacona and Milo. The success of the bank is due in part to the excellent service Peoples Bank provides its customers. They take care of the families, small businesses and local agriculture needs in the communities they serve and have even been recognized with many honors, including Best Bank in Warren County.

Peoples Bank understands the importance of economic development in Warren County. “Local economic development is the life-line for our communities. It provides the building blocks for a strong fi nancial base. Even more importantly, economic development has emerged as a critical function and is a bellwether of how well our communities can deliver services and promote growth.” says Kevin Halterman, president of Peoples Bank. “From assisting established local businesses with expansions to attracting new companies, Warren County Economic Development makes it happen. I believe WCEDC has provided vision, and more importantly results for all of Warren County.”
