Unit 2Test Reading

The Cicada

The life cycle of the cicada is one of nature’s wonders.

The female cicada lays her eggs, putting them inside the branches of a tree. When they are ready, tiny cicadas called nymphs hatch out of the eggs.

The nymphs drop to the ground. Using their strong front legs, they dig down into the earth and search for a tree root. When they find a root, the nymphs use their mouths, like pointed tubes, to feed on the sap of the tree.

As they feed and grow, the nymphs live inside a little pocket in the soil. They live underground for several years while they grow and shed their skin. One species of cicada, native to North America, spends 17 years underground.

Once they’ve matured, the nymphs dig their way back up to the surface. Here they are at risk of predators. The nymphs wait for darkness before climbing up a tree trunk. Then, the skin along the back of the nymphs splits open. Fully grown cicadas push their way out. Holding onto the tree, they unfold their wings and wait until the wings harden.

Now the cicadas are ready to fly away and start the cycle again!

A Read and write.

1 What is the main idea of this article? the life cycle of the cicada

2 How long do some species of North American cicada live underground?

3 What are little cicadas called?

4 What is the first step in the cicada life cycle?

5 Which word in the article means almost the same as fully grown?

6 When the back of the nymph splits open, what pushes out?
