• Exterior Gateway Protocol• Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)
• Interior Gateway Protocol• Routing Information Protocol (RIP)• Enhanced Interior Gateway Protocol (EIGRP)• Open Shortest Path First (OSPF)• Intermediate System to Intermediate System (IS-
IS)
• A switch is a layer 2 (L2) device that is used to connect computers, printers and servers within a building or campus.
• L2 address is the Ethernet MAC address• A switch contains physical interfaces called ports and
communicates via frames. • L2 switches make their forwarding decisions based
on tables that store the mapping between MAC addresses and switch ports.
• Multilayer switches, making the forwarding decisions based on the L3.
• Routers/Switches depend on two types of software for their operation: IOS and configuration file
• The Cisco Internetwork Operating System (IOS) is the system software in Cisco devices.
• Configuration files contain the Cisco IOS software commands used to customize the functionality of the Cisco device.
• A network administrator creates a configuration file that defines the desired functionality of a Cisco device.
• The IOS is generally accessed using a Command Line Interface (CLI). (GUI – SDM, CCP)
• To access the CLI environment. • Console - the default location for performing device
management and configuration.• VTY (virtual terminal line) – allows remote
administration via Telnet or SSH• AUX port (router only)
