ExtensionsSubstation extensions for high-voltage switchgear applications

When you extend or redesign your substation or replace unreliable or aged equipment, physical constraints are some of the many influencing parameters that can define the most appropriate solution.

ABB, the leading global player in high-voltage prod- ucts, offers a wide range of electrical infrastructure solutions and services encompassing:• Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS)• Hybrid Switchgear Plug and Switch System (PASS)• Air Insulated Switchgear (AIS)• Generator Circuit Breakers (GCB)• Capacitor Banks and Filters• Instrument Transformers• Surge Arresters

As a globally operating technology organization and product manufacturer, we complement our offer-ings with a comprehensive range of round- the-clock support and life cycle services. The goal of ABB’s product support services is to improve the reliability and extend the operating life of your high-volt- age equipment, while reducing operation and maintenance costs in each life-cycle phase. To meet the challenges of the evolving high-voltage service mar- ket, we continue to develop our portfolio, in-crease customer satisfaction, and improve our oper-ations.

lated Switchgear (AIS) to specially engineered systems, like Hybrid GIS, which combine both these technologies to reduce the substation’s footprint.

ApplicationA typical example of Hybrid GIS application is the extension of an existing AIS substation with addi-tional feeders. The required space for such a capac-ity increase is often one of the most critical points, since many substations were built without extra space for future feeders. In this case, the reduced footprint of the Hybrid GIS is a strong advantage compared to the existing AIS solution.

Thanks to the Hybrid GIS in-line configuration, cus-tomers can double the capacity of an AIS substation by replacing each AIS feeder with two Hybrid GIS feeders. Thanks to the compactness of the Hybrid GIS module, many parts of the original installation can be left in place. These parts depend on the origi-nal layout of the substation and can include gan-tries, bus bars, and surge arresters as an example.

BenefitsA typical customer request for redesign includes:• Double the capacity of the substation• No additional footprint required• Keeping the original non-switching equipment in

place where possible• Upgrade fault level performance• Shortest possible power interruption and project

time• Minimize enabling works
