London: A European leader?
An important factor for winning the bid in 2005 was the promised legacy
of London; the Olympics as part of an existing city-wide strategy. With the help of the Olympics, London can show its desired position as a global city or dominating metropolitan centre (Johnson, 2008) and focus on issues like social exclusion, detoriated public infrastructure and sustainability.
The expected growth of London in the future and its accompanying need for housing and jobs can be solved by the designated Opportunity Areas for Regeneration. Examples of these areas are: King´s Cross, White City, Elephant and Castle and the Lower Lea Valley (LLV). The olympic park is part of the largest regeneration project; the LLV.

Searching forlocal potentials in Hackney Wick,
London
In the London Plan (2004), mayor Ken Livingstone describes the potentials of the LLV and East End boroughs and tries to solve the challenges these boroughs face by creating new environments. Issues like unemployment, poor infrastructure and un- safety can be improved by the future proposal for the Olympic media site. Research by DfL and Raco shows that before 2007 many small businesses could be found in the area of Hackney Wick. These creative industries vary from glass production, furniture repair to printing industries.
Unfortunately, many of these businesses and the Manor Gardens allotments were evicted in 2007 for the future media site.
So far, a Post-Olympics destination for the nearly 100.000m2 media site is not found.

Olympic Legacy: Best intentions
meet reality
While the bid promised social inclusion, opportunities for education and jobs for the East London boroughs, reality is significantly different. The current design for the Media site is out of proportion, the site is poorly connected to both Hackney Wick and the Legacy park landscape, and proposed employment opportunities do not match the skills of the locals. How can a new proposal of the Olympic Mediasite in Hackney Wick provide a more even distribution of benefits over different stakeholders across time?

How to adapt a
building?
The building has four building typologies: The brickwork backbone, over-dimensioned offices, self-sustaining atelier units and the greenhouse-offices. This page shows the principles of the ateliers:
1.The adaptable sub- structure allows the users to rent a space of (minimim) 12.5m2 as well as 50m2 or even 100m2. Local businesses will be encouraged to continue despite rising prices.
2. The walls of the atelier units can be adapted depending on its functions. The service spaces provide stairs, climate design as well as storage.
3. The roof (depending on growth opportunities) can be part of the green -Media site - landscape
4. The interior spaces can be divided with a 0.5m wide furniture element (2.1). The facade is designed on a rhythm of 0.5 and multiplifications of that.

site in Ortigia
Ortigia, part of the historic centre of Syracuse, has played an important role in Greek and Roman history. Its adventageous position in the mediterranean sea encouraged trade , which offered the city respectable wealth from all over Southern Europe. The cultural history can still be found in parts of ancient Ortigia. Luxurious courtyards, baroque facades and balconies characterise the streets of Ortigia, but unfortunatl this cannot last forever..
One of the main questions for the authorities is whether to preserve and renovate all these old buildings or demolish them for a new future.

Old traces for a future building
The bad condition of this building block leaves us two obvious choices: demolition or renovation. However, their is an alternative. This design shows that the old shapes can be maintained as a memory in a new building.

Every August, for eleven days the Swiss-Italian town of Locarno, right in the heart of Europe, becomes the world capital of auteur cinema. The audience spreads out over the Piazza Grande and ‘la Rotonda’. The organisers for a new landmark for possible expansion in the future.
The new design accomodates all the cinema rooms (approximately 6000 seats) needed for the festival and the organisers’ offices.
The offices which are used all year, are taken as a starting point to make the cinema building adaptable for uses outside the festival.

The concept ofPavilion Blackbox
Every five years, the society of architecture stu-dents of Delft, STYLOS, holds a competition among students to design a temporary pavil-ion. In 2006, pavilion Black-box was chosen to be developed.
Blackbox is a cubic design of 10x10m with a living, green exterior and flexible interior for meetings, lectures, workshops and parties.
The definition of ‘Blackbox’ is a construct with known performance characteristics, but unknown process. In this case the outside does not show its interior, which enhances the adaptability to multiple functions.
The short lifespan of this building is represented by its exterior; in the transi-tory and changeable vertical garden.

Primary stakeholders influencing the criteria
The above mentioned criteria are influenced by different stakeholders shown in the diagram.
Each of the criteria is linked to the involved actors. Some stakholders may be more dedicated to reach these goals and criteria than others. Loosing profit can have a negative influence for example.
However, the success of this project does not only depend upon dedication, but also on the criticality of the stakeholder. A critical actor is defined as an actor necessary for the achievement of thegoal.
Actors that are critical, but not dedicated should move to the dedicated
group.

Different target-groups require different solutions The next step is to get local inhabitants interested in this project. Especially for buying and using the Renewable Energy Source (RES) equipment it is essential to have households in Delft involved. However, it is difficult to get everyone enthousiastic at once. Different stakeholders require different stra-tegies and other im-plementation.
Some solutions are able to take effect and be implemented fairly quickly while others will need work to be started on them now, but will only be fully implemented and effective in a very long period of time. If only long-term solutions were chosen, it is hard to see much gain in the first years.Conversely, if only short term solutions, were chosen lots of gain in the first few years is shown, however we would not have laid the groundwork for the longer term solutions.
