Inspiration is key for any designer. I have been surrounded by visual art and design since I was a kid playing around in my Dad’s art stu-dio in Manhattan. Growing up I went through wild years pursuing a ca-reer as a rock star, ran my own construction company, and managed a bar that became the go-to venue for Lower East Side musicians and artists. I eventually moved on to designing sets for still photography, interi-or spaces, and high-profile events. Whether for personal or professional projects, my early work started my interest in collaboration between music, art, design, and entertainment.

Throughout my career I have faced a lot of criticism for my “out-side of the box” approach to design, but that criticism has only made me want to keep pushing creative limits. A big part of getting the op-portunity to work with incredibly talented people has come from tak-ing chances that others would not risk taking. From my time playing and touring with New York Hardcore bands, to designing iconic sets for pho-tographers like David LaChapelle and Annie Leibovitz, I have seen end-less inspiration for creativity. After winning Season 4 of HGTV’s De-sign Star and landing my own show “The Antonio Treatment,” I am excited to continue creating original work from the inspiration I find in unex-pected places.

I rolled into Design Star with no idea what a

reality show was even about, I just wanted to get out of commercial set design. The next thing I knew my friend sent in an application for me and I was put on the show. Everyone was skeptical of my skills as an interior designer, but I quickly realized that I had a different angle working for me. My experiences from set design, con-struction, and the New York City art and music scene really worked to my advantage. I ended up winning and landed my own show on HGTV, “The Antonio Treatment.”

The show has given me the opportunity to work with new artists and new materials and continue to break out of safe and boring design. I am con-stantly trying to find new and unusual ways to customize and personalize people’s spaces. Getting to expose local artists and craftsmen helps keep things fresh and brings in another edge of creativity.

I cut ties with Murphy’s Law and Z Bar, and didn’t know what direction to take my career. One day I ran in to a friend that was working on set for a photographer named David LaChapelle. He asked if I wanted to help build a set they were working on. The first day I stepped on to set I was surrounded by walls being lit on fire, trannies in full make up fighting with each other in

one corner, crazy scenic backdrops in another corner, and artists and photographers running around trying to get a good shot of whatever model was in front of the camera.

It was chaos and madness but I knew there couldn’t be a better job out there for me..

David was always urging me to take my work to the next level, to go bigger and farther with my ideas. His encouragement reinforced the same mindset my mom had taught me. They both expected me to see my ideas all the way through without excuses or apologies.

I like to find inspiration in un-conventional places, and I don’t think interior design should be as easy as seeing something and replicating it in your own space. My home and studio say a lot about my life and what inspires me. I design with a certain perspective that is shown in my own place, and I don’t think people would believe in my work if I lived differently.

I find inspiration all around me. I try to cap-ture my view of the world through my photogra-phy. It allows me to show what catches my eye and keeps me open to inspiration in unexpected places.
