From all of us at Extended Care, we wish our ECC extended families a healthy and prosperous 2018! To all of the ECC family – our consulted facilities’ staff, ECC Consulting and ECC Clinical let me wish each and every one of you a safe and healthy new year. There are many changes on the regulatory side taking shape for 2018: • Emergency Preparedness to ensure safety of our residents during an emergency; • New CMS/ Public Health Survey Process; • New QAPI (quality assurance + performance improvement) Process; • Antibiotic Stewardship; • New Staff Training and Competency Skills Documentation; • Changes in penalties when facilities are out of compliance for extended periods. Emergency Preparedness- (see November issue of EC Chronicles) In short: Our preparedness plans describes our facility’s comprehensive approach to meeting the health, safety, and security needs of our facility, our residents, our staff and the community. The plan assists us with any hazard that causes adverse physical, social, psychological challenges. It requires us to have an ability to respond rapidly and effectively. New CMS/ Public Health Survey Process- In Short: The Surveyors will be spending much more time on the floors meeting and discussing subjects with residents. The Person-Centered Care Approaches (see December issue of EC Chronicles) will be a big factor in the new survey process. New QAPI Process- Fostering a resident-centered environment in which systems and processes contribute to the quality of each resident’s care and life, enhanced through recognition of resident choices and the satisfaction of these residents and their families as well as the participation and observation of all caregivers and services partners. A large part of QAPI is identifying any weak areas and work on Performance Improvement. Antibiotic Stewardship- Many people are becoming resistant to the use of antibiotics when they need them. We are required to start working on a process that ensures when residents are getting antibiotics that they actually need them. This is a Public Health concern for all individuals not just nursing home residents. New Training and Competency Skills- This new requirement adds a level of documentation to our orientation and training program. Facilities will need to show that staff were not only trained in their work – but also they have shown competency of the skills to do the job. Think return demonstration for this new area. Changes in Penalties- the new penalties for facilities that are out of compliance with regulations for an extended period can face stiffer, higher financial penalties, can face Public Health appointing a temporary manager, and more directed in-service training of staff. I believe education is power so my hope is that by reading some of these changes we will be better prepared to start 2018 and be the best we can to meet to needs of our residents and meet these changes in regulations. Happy New Year! Ron Nunziato CEO, Extended Care Clinical Consulting @extendedcarellc

LemontCHECK OUT the Events at

Lemont Center held its Winter Wonderland Grand Opening in early December. The facility had over 50 guests from the community and hospitals attend the event. The new addition tour included a stop by the brand new beauty salon and barber shop, the ice cream parlor, gift shop, and library. Folks were walked through Lemont’s brand new therapy gym and able to check out the 26 private suites on the new addition. All of us here at Lemont Center are excited about the new addition opening and thrilled to be a part of such a widely supported endeavor.

A special thank you to the Department Managers at Lemont and the Extended Care Staff who helped set up and attended our opening.

At Grasmere Place the year has gone by fast like the “blink of an eye” some would say. It seems as though when we get into the holiday season it even goes faster as the hustle and bustle of Thanksgiving and Christmas coming and going and the excitement of this New Year upon us.Throughout the year, Grasmere staff is proud of the active roll we take in being part of the community and always striving to be good neighbors. We attend the local CAPS meetings, are an active member in the Wilson Broadway Coalition in an effort to decrease crime in the area, participate in the yearly Clean and Green and do many other things to support our local community. As we prepare for our upcoming SMHRF survey, this year we decided for our survey preparedness and Emergency planning, to give an extra Shout out to the Local Fire Department in District 19th who has been lifesaving and always available and accessible to us from our false alarms to our near emergencies without hesitation. They are truly the center of heroism, so Grasmere Place went over to thank the local Fire Department for putting their life on the line to keep us and our community of Uptown safe. We are so thankful for their commitment, dedication and service, and our prayers remain with them as they faithfully serve in harm’s way. So as we close out the year in past and look

forward to the New Year and all that it will bring,

the staff, myself, and residents of Grasmere

Place would like to wish all our friends, families

and loved ones a prosperous New Year.

The Recreation department at Prairie Manor held a holiday decorating contest, involving all three floors of staff and residents.

We even had a resident Santa!!! Third floor won by a landslide!

Jimmy John subs were presented to all the winners!!
