Extemp develops public speaking skills, raise knowledge of current events, improves
analytical skills, enhances writing skills, and increases organizational skills. Attentiveness to political, economic and social issues produces a
more informed citizen.
Domestic & Foreign Topic Areas• Students come with a rich background…they love to let
you know what they know• Students can entertain as well as share knowledge• Students can analyze and express their opinion
• Students who do well in EXTEMP usually do well overall

Draw 3 topics – Select your best option 30 mins of prep starts Prep on you own using your files – no
help from anyone in the prep room Computers are now permitted in the
prep room at nationals (most tournaments have followed)
Practice the speech…
Leave the prep room only when dismissed by the prep room manager
Go straight to the round Deliver up to a 7 min speech (no
minimum)
Repeat this until all rounds have been presented
Up to 7 mins in length (grace period) Organized in an interesting fashion No notes in delivery You and the judge in the room Sometimes the is also a timer
Read/study LOTS of current events Collect Articles – on the computer or
in files Topic areas are available through the
NFHS and usually emailed to you by the State Rep
CNN, Time, The Economist, NY Times, BBC, CATO, Brookings, CBO…etc.
Introduction – hook your judge State the Question Formulate an Answer to the Question State your premise for the answer in
several points Support each point with evidence &
logic from your research – Cite Sources Again…Answer the question Tie back to your introduction
