Do you need a great reason to get outside for fresh air and easy exercise? Or are you an experienced photographer who would like to get back to what you love again, and meet new friends with similar interests? JDF Seniors Camera Club is for you! We have a mix of novice and experienced photographers who meet in room 201 every Thursday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. When the weather allows, we often go out to various locations to take photos. In the last year, for example, we have been to the Aviation Museum at Victoria Airport, Government House, the Sidney Wharf and, closer to home, Royal Roads, Charlie’s Trail and Esquimalt Lagoon. On rainy days, we sometimes set up “Still Life” arrangements in the room to practice close-up or Macro photography. Other times, some of our members will give a presentation or we will watch short videos to help us advance our camera skills. We also enjoy sharing our photos from the group’s outings, as well as others taken on our own, and learn from each other that way. All of us agree that our photos have improved over the time we’ve been involved with this group, and we have a wonderful time together. This year, we will have a theme each month to help us with organizing outings. October has been Fall/Thanksgiving and Hallowe’en with shoots at Michel’s Farm and Galey’s Farm…lots of great pumpkin photos! November’s theme is Weather/ Clouds/Stormy Waves and Rain with suggested trips to Dallas Road and Whiffen Spit. Come join us! Whatever your experience level or type of camera, we’d love to have you!

TOONIE BIN

I would like to thank everyone for all the time that has been spent to get the toonie bin ready for the craft sale. We had sorters and wrappers and people that helped to take items down stairs for me and helped clear out the storage room before we could start this year. I would also like to thank the maintenance staff (Manjiat, Peter and Lyle) as they have to set up for us and take away lots of garbage and recycling when we are done. At this time, we will not be accepting any donations until end of January as we have to get it cleared out for new items. Items not accepted are toiletries, perfumes, clothing of any sort, shoes, shoe polish or sprays, pictures or frames. We do accept scarves, toques and mitts or gloves for all ages. Thanks again to all who have donated items this past year. Hope to see you at the fair on November 2nd and 3rd, as there are lots of items. Please bring bags to take your treasures home. Thanks again.

Please label the item, and indicate if it contains nuts or is gluten or lactose free. No Rice Krispie Squares, please.

We will package and price items ready for sale.

Sorry, we can NO longer accept previously frozen items.

Thank you for your donations. See you (and all your friends) at the Craft Fair.

Don’t forget to turn your clocks back when Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, November 3rd.

BABY HATS

Thanks you to all for the donations of the purple hats for the shaken baby syndrome. I delivered 163 hats on the 19th of October to Victoria General Hospital. The look they gave me when I donated them made my heart melt so - the hats were very much appreciated by them.

Also, thanks for the baby hats to the other hospitals. Keep them coming as they really appreciate them, too. I have wool and patterns for anyone wishing to knit them. Let me know and I can bring them in to the Centre for pick-up.

Thanks again. Pat Ford - [email protected] or 250-478-4387.

EXPRESSIONS DEADLINE

All class leaders are welcome to submit articles for the Expressions about their class. The next edition will cover two months - December 2019/January 2020. The deadline for submissions to the December 2019/January 2020 Expressions is November 18, 2019. If you have any questions, please call Charlotte Adams @ 250-478-4982 or email the Expressions team at [email protected]. Please submit your article via this email address.

MEMBERSHIPS

Did you know your Membership Fees pay for the rental and maintenance of our wonderful building? Westshore Parks & Recreation own and manage the building, as well as providing maintenance staff to the Centre. The yearly membership fee is also set by Westshore Parks & Rec.

Thank you to all who have renewed and a big Welcome to our many new members.

Membership fees were due September 1/19. Those who have not renewed, please do so next time you come, as unfortunately, those unregistered cannot attend any classes without a current membership.

Honourary Members: An Honourary Member is a member who will reach the age of 90 years while in good standing, meaning they had to have been a paid-up member the previous year. In the current and ensuing years, an Honourary Member will no longer be required to pay the user fee/membership fee but will have all the privileges of an Ordinary Member including the right to vote at meetings (as per Constitution and Bylaws).

That said, Honourary Members still need to register each year to have their membership cards updated with a current expiry sticker. Also, some of these members are being missed as they have not provided their birthdate for our records.

Just a reminder that the Try Before You Buy passes are not longer valid or in effect. Instead, those wishing to try out the Centre before committing to a membership can purchase a Trial Pass from Reception for $25.00 for one month. This pass is non-renewable and cannot be applied against a full membership.

The Membership Team is still keeping very busy processing memberships as well as going through Class Attendance sheets to keep our records up to date. If a new printed Attendance Sheet is needed by the Leaders we encourage you to put your request in through Reception for action by the Membership Teams folder.

The Membership Team

SCENT-FREE

A gentle reminder that our Centre is a “Scent-Free” zone. Many of our members are allergic to some of the ingredients in various perfumes, body lotions, hair products, aftershave products, laundry products, etc. Some of these members have had to leave a class and/or the Centre because another member is wearing a strong-scented product. Please consider your fellow members and abstain from using these products while at our Centre.

REMEMBER TO USE OUR MEMBERSHIP NUMBER AT THE CO-OP FOR GAS

By getting your gas at the Co-op and using our membership number, you will be benefitting the Centre, as at the end of the year the Centre will receive a dividend cheque based on what has been spent on fuel for our bus and by the members who have purchased gas at the Co-op.

55+ BC GAMES Jeannie Hadley & Paul Martin, two members of JDF Seniors Centre, won a Silver Medal in the Table Tennis 70-74 Mixed Doubles Competition in Kelowna B.C. on 9th-14th Sept/19. Jeannie also won a silver in the women’s doubles and singles competitions. In 2021 these 55+ BC Games will be held in Victoria and this gives many JDF Seniors groups an opportunity to perform in the worthwhile activities. The lower Vancouver Island is classified as Zone One of the total of 15 Zones and had 400 participants in the approx. 4,000 participants at Kelowna. There are 33 different activities to take part in and include the following activities which occur at JDF Seniors - Floor (Carpet) Bowling, Floor Curling, Bridge, Cribbage, Table Tennis, Horseshoes, Darts and Snooker. Group leaders and class participants who are interested in participating in these games, can interphase with myself. Thanks, Paul Martin

The story, thought to be based loosely on the Leopold and Loeb murder case in 1924, concerns two young university students who have murdered fellow student Ronald Kentley as an expression of their supposed intellectual superiority. At the beginning of the play, they hide Kentley's body in a chest. They proceed to host a party for his friends and family at which the locked chest containing his corpse is used to serve a buffet. Suspicion arises among the guests as to the contents of the chest. After the party, one guest, a former professor of the murderers, returns and contrives to open the chest.

Location: 805 Langham Court Bus Departs: 7:15 pm Show: 8:00 pm - approx 2 hours with 1 intermission Rtn: approx 10:30 pm Cost: $30.00

Friday, Dec 13: Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) at the Canadian College of Performing Arts - Ticket Sales CLOSE Nov 13th A beleaguered academic and unlikely heroine is convinced that Shakespeare’s Othello and Romeo and Juliet were never meant to be tragic. Her theory is that if a wise fool archetype were reinstated into the plays, they could not remain tragedies. However, she is too timid to show her skeptical boss, Professor Claude Night, that she is right. In a moment of despair, Constance is thrown into the two Shakespearean tragedies to discover the truth about herself, and to find the lost fool with the help of Desdemona and Juliet. “One of the wildest and wooliest feminist reappraisals that the theatre has seen…” - The Globe and Mail

Location: 701 Elgin Rd Departure: 6:45 pm Show: 7:30 pm - approx 2.5 hours with 1 intermission Rtn: approx 10:30 pm Price: $30

Coming in January On Thursday Jan 23rd we will go to see Oh My God (God goes to an earthly therapist!) performed by Bema Productions at the Synagogue. Details to come in December’s Expressions.

LANGHAM COURT THEATRE SEASON TICKET HOLDERS

Do you have, or would like to have, season’s tickets to the Langham Court Theatre ... and would like to have transportation to the Theatre on the Centre’s bus? Season’s tickets are for six performances between September and June, so we would start next fall. We want to gauge the interest and if enough people are interested, we’ll look into all the details that would make this possible. Look for the sign-up sheet posted on the board outside the auditorium. If there’s sufficient interest, we’ll call an information meeting.
