In many parts of the globe, it has also become the primary or secondary language of the people. What propelled the English language to such popularity? The rise of England to world power and the global colonizaon is one logical explanaon. What is oſten overlooked is the power of England’s Bible, The King James Bible of 1611. This Bible has influenced how we speak and the phrases we use. Much of what we say can be traced back to the King James Bible. This Lent our theme for the Wednesday services will be the “Expressions From The Bible.” Today, March 24 is “Stone’s Throw.” Intermixed throughout the sermons will be other sayings from the Bible. For Example, “at wits end”, “gnash your teeth”, “God as my witness”, “fuel the fire”, “the wring on the wall”, etc. I hope that this Lenten journey will be good for our souls and help prepare us for the Easter Cel- ebraon of our Lord’s Resurrecon. My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest. Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the one Israel praises. In you our ancestors put their trust; they trusted and you delivered them. To you they cried out and were saved; in you they trusted and were not put to shame. But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by everyone, despised by the people. All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads. “He trusts in the LORD,” they say, “let the LORD rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him.” Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you, even at my mother’s breast. From birth I was cast on you; from my mother’s womb you have been my God. Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help. Gospel Lesson Luke 22:39-46 (KJV) And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disci- ples also followed him. And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptaon. And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow, and said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptaon. Sermon Hymn 159 Go to Dark Gethsemane 1. Go to dark Gethsemane, ye that feel the tempter’s power; Your Redeemer’s conflict see, watch with Him one bier hour; Turn not from His griefs away, learn of Jesus Christ to pray. 2. Follow to the judgment hall; view the Lord of life arraigned; Oh, the wormwood and the gall! Oh, the pangs His soul sustained! Shun not suff’ring, shame or loss; learn of Him to bear the cross. 3. Calvary’s mournful mountain climb; there, adoring at His feet, Mark that miracle of me, God’s own sacrifice complete. “It is finished!” hear Him cry; learn of Jesus Christ to die.
