SGT MMAKO MOPHIRING, thecommunications officer of theSouth African Police Service(SAPS) in Phuthaditjhaba, hasearned the respect of many in theFree State with the excellent job hehas done the past few years.

Mophiring, who joined theSAPSin 1998, has not only earned re-spect, but has also scooped manyawards as reward for his goodwork.ExpressEasternFreeStatehad a chat with him.

What college did you attend?I received training at the Preto-

ria West College.

Did you always want to workfor the SAPS?

Yes. I wanted to be in the policeas a spokesperson because of mylove of working within the mediafraternity. I projected my goalsearly and by the mercy of God I gotinto the system whilst in Gauteng.

What position do you hold?I am a sergeant communications

officer based at the Phutha-ditjhaba Cluster.

What does your position en-tail?

It mostly deal with liaison withmedia and internal stake holderson various issues that affect themand the public.

What challenges have you en-countered in your job?

Some police officers regard meas a journalist and feel hesitant todisclose information to me that is

of public interest. Another thing ishaving to ensure the image of theorganisation stays intact whilesome members go out of their wayto drag it through the mud withinseconds of hard work with a don’tcareattitudewhichat theendcoststhem their jobs.

Members of the police shouldalign their conductwith the consti-tution and apply lots of disciplinewhile moving away from being en-snared by fraud and corruption.

And the good things?A good thing about my work is

building good relations betweenmembers andmanagement, thepo-lice and the community. I havegood relations with various mediahouses that assist in educating andinforming the masses about crimeand also sharing people’s stories.

You are still studying at yourage. Why, where and what areyou studying?

In the media world one has to beaware of development in one’s sur-roundings. Technology has takenover, especially social media, andthat is thereasonwhyIneed tocon-tinue studying. The field of publicrelations changes regularly andstudying with Unisa is teachingme that learning knows no limits.

You recently scooped anaward. What was it for?

It was the Provincial Commis-sioner’s Excellence Award. I wasawarded the title of Best SupportService Employee.

How many trophies have youcollected?

I have three trophies now andthat shows that I am on theright way and I believe Iwould not have ob-tained them if it wasnot because ofhard work.

What isyour five-year goal?

In thenext fiveyears, withthe mercyof God, Iwant to seemyselfservingboth thepo-lice and thecommuni-ty with dig-nity and respect and that my posi-tion have been adjusted to anotherlevel.

Some may think police offi-cials are not people to makefriends with because they al-ways have arrest on theirminds. What is your take onthis?

Police officers are members ofthe community andnot angels. Buttheyhave to execute their duties asrequired and still have friends atthe same time.

Who is Mmako Mophiring?I am the last born in my family

of four. Two boys and girls.

Are you married?I am married to the wonderful

God fearing and supportive Patri-

cia Mophiring. She is a daughter ofthe loving family of Mr and MrsKumalo who hails from the Nama-hadi Village in Qwaqwa.

Where did you grow up?I was born and bred at the Sun-

nyside Guest Farm in Clarens andschooled in Bohlokong at the Mot-sepuwa Primary School and wentto high school at Tiisetsang. I com-pleted matric at Tsebo Secondary.

What kind of a learner wereyou during your school days?

I was a good leaner with lots ofrespect for my teachers and peers, also as a soccer player.

How do you unwind?I spend time with my partner,

watch the news, listen to radio andread most of the local newspapers.

Wherewere you in 1994whenNelson Mandela became thepresident?

I casted my first ever democraticvote at Joubert Park whilst in Jo-hannesburg.

I remember a lot about theday, which was filled with joy, enthusiasm and hope on the fac-es of our people who stood inlong queues lining up towardsthe voting station with theirminds already made up whothey wanted as the new presi-dent of the country.

What is you motto?Never give up in life and persist

to do what is right. Do not aim toplease others, but obey your Godand His instructions. I wouldn’tknow my destiny except for obey-ing God Almighty.

Dedication is key SGT MMAKO MOPHIRING,the communications officer ofthe South African Police Serv-ice (SAPS) at the Phutha-ditjhaba Cluster in Qwaqwa.
