The challenges councils face• Continued public spending cuts• Rising demand for costly services• Below inflation increase in Council Tax• Less money to help people with Council Tax• Uncertain income from business rates• New funding for health and social care• Implications of Care Bill• Impact greatest upon most deprived boroughs
Facing the Future
How the money’s looking
• It’s been tough but we’ve balanced the budget for 2014/15
• 2015/16 and 2016/17 are crunch years for all councils
• Need to prepare now to avoid more cuts to frontline services
Facing the Future
The way forward• Summits taken place from September 2013• Analysing challenges to chart the way forward• Incremental changes not enough• Need for major transformation to deliver
services for less • Cabinet agreed outline of programme to save
£20m per year and balance the budget from 2016
Facing the Future
What is the programme?• Critical to the 3 year budget strategy • Implementation of £20m savings by 2016/17• 10 Corporate Projects • Will require new ways of working/whole council
approach to be successful • Progress managed jointly by Cabinet/
Management Board• More projects will appear as programme evolves• Dedicated intranet site under development
