Toughness can be easily explained by comparison with a bungee jumper who has to rely on his rope. The rope needs to elongate but must not tear.

Capture tooth and preparation margin in detail through strong hydrophilicity and very good flowability.

Necessary Characteristics of an Impression Material to Withstand Mouth Removal:

• Ability to elongate and compress 4elongation and compression potential

• Ability to avoid tearing 4high tensile strength

• Ability to recover from elongation and compression 4recovery from deformation

The overall goal of an impression is to create an exact copy of the intraoral situation especially the detailed reproduction of

the preparation margins – a prerequisite for excellent fitting restorations. To capture the margin, an impression material

needs to have excellent properties in the unset stage, especially hydrophilicity and flowability. To avoid any kind of perma-

nent deformation when the impression is removed from the mouth, an impression material needs superior properties in

the set stage. The new Express™ 2 VPS Impression Materials meet these requirements – even under challenging clinical

conditions – the first time.

Focus on Clinically Relevant Material Properties

Flow to tooth and gingiva of Express™ 2 Light Body Flow (green) and Express™ 2 Light Body Standard (lavender) wash materials. The more flowable Express 2 Light Body Flow creates a very smooth surface, whereas Express 2 Light Standard exhibits more structure.

Hydrophilicity: Great Detail Reproduction Even in the Presence of Moisture

The hydrophilicity of an impression material contributes to the reproduction of detail in a moist environment. The method

most often used to determine the hydrophilicity of an impression material is the contact angle measurement: A drop of water

is placed on the surface of an impression material, the spreading of the drop is observed and the contact angle is measured.

The lower the contact angle – the better the hydrophilicity. In 3M ESPE internal comparative tests Express 2 wash materials

showed a much lower contact angle than all the other VPS materials tested. Clinically this reflects the potential for superb

wettability of the preparation surfaces. Therefore Express 2 Impression Materials offer very good detail reproduction, even

under challenging clinical conditions.

When an impression is removed from the mouth, it is exposed to two principal forces, elongation and compression.

Compared to other VPS impression materials, Express™ 2 VPS Impression Materials have an unique ability to withstand

these deformation forces.

Distortion-Free Removal from Mouth and Model

Toughness: The Potential to Resist Tearing!

To avoid tearing while the set impression is removed from the mouth, an impression material does not only need to have

a high tensile strength but also a high elongation potential that allows the material to stretch.

The combination of these two parameters is described as toughness. It is defined as the total amount of energy an impression

material can absorb until it tears. Therefore toughness is the best measure of an impression material’s ability to withstand

the forces it is exposed to – during mouth removal and when the model is fabricated – without tearing.

Toughness values for different VPS wash materials of same setting version (regular) and comparable viscosity. Express™ 2 Light Body Standard exhibits noticeably higher toughness values than Aquasil Ultra LV, President Plus Jet light and Affinis Regular Body.

Flowability: Reliable Coverage of Preparation Surface

Upon syringing impression wash materials require special flow properties

to ensure optimal coverage of the preparation surface areas.

Express™ 2 Wash Materials come in different viscosities. Express™ 2

Light Body Flow (-Quick) VPS Impression Material offers a great flow

to the tooth surfaces and gingiva while still retaining sufficient drip

resistance. Upon syringing, the material flows very well into the sulcus

by itself. Express™ 2 Light Body Standard (-Quick) VPS Impression

Material is slightly more viscous. It stays nicely on the tooth while still

offering good flow characteristics.

Page 3: Express 2 VPS Impression Material€¦ · recover nearly 100 % from deformations during mouth removal. Meets All Requirements of Dental Practice and Lab Express 2 VPS Impression Materials

Recovery from Compression and Elongation

Precision impression materials all fulfil the minimum requirement for recovery from compression of 96,5 %

(ISO test). Typically the materials show values of > 99 % in this test, meaning a permanent deformation

of 1 % or even less. But how about their recovery from elongation? High recovery from elongation is

important for the area around the preparation margin, especially in clinical situations with a deep

sulcus, undercuts and interproximal spaces. In these places the impression material is exposed to

strong elongation forces during removal from the mouth.

The results of a 3M ESPE internal comparative study on the recovery from elongation

demonstrate the superb performance of Express™ 2 VPS Impression Materials. In this

test, paddle shaped test specimens of different VPS materials were cured at mouth

temperature, according to the manufacturers’ recommended setting times, then they

were stretched by 150 % and allowed to recover. Two hours after stretching, the

samples were measured to determine the recovery from elongation. Results

showed that Express™ 2 Light Body Standard VPS Impression Material recov-

ers nearly 100 % after stretching. Its permanent deformation is only

0,25 %. In contrast Aquasil™ Ultra LV exhibits a large perma-

nent deformation of 2,2 % (Lot: 041030). Clinically

this means that even exposed to strong elonga-

tion forces, Express 2 Light Body Standard can

maintain its original dimensions, whereas

impression materials with considerably lower

recovery after elongation (e.g. Aquasil™

Ultra LV) may experience a permanent deformation – potentially

leading to distortions and therefore to poor fit of restorations.

Important for Dental Practice and Lab

The nearly 100% recovery from elongation of Express 2 VPS Impression Materials is also an important advantage for the

dental technician. While the impression is removed from the cast, it is again exposed to elongation and compressive forces.

To benefit from multiple pouring of VPS impressions, superb recovery from deformation is essential.

The winning combination of clinically relevant characteristics are:

• Tensile strength

• Elongation potential

• Toughness

• Recovery from elongation

• Hydrophilicity.

The above mentioned clinical benefits of Express™ 2 VPS Impression Materials can be summarized in a star chart:

Great Performance where it clinically counts

Express™ 2 Light Body Standard VPS Impression Material (green) shows very convincing performance in this compilation

of clinically important properties. It is the only material that performs very well in each of the five tested properties,

whereas all the other tested materials show weaknesses at least for one property.

This outstanding balance of properties of Express™ 2 VPS Impression Material offers excellent potential for highly accurate

impressions and better fitting restorations – a benefit for dentist, patient and dental technician.

Very Positive Feedback from Dental Practitioners

In a clinical test of the new Express 2 VPS Impression Materials with

87 dentists from Germany, France and Italy 1125 precision impressions

were taken, 57 % with the 1-step technique and 43 % with the 2-step

technique. Overall, dentists were very satisfied with the Express 2 VPS

Impression Materials and judged them to be very good across a wide

variety of material characteristics and slightly better than their currently

preferred products.

The Ideal Combination for 2Step Technique

Offering high final rigidity and very good carving properties, Express 2 Penta Putty VPS Impression Material is a convincing

choice for the 2-step putty-wash technique in combination with the wash material Express™ 2 Ultra-Light Body Quick VPS

Impression Material. Due to its ultra-light consistency combined with its strong structural viscosity this wash material is able to

flow very well into the sulcus. It also generates very thin layers in the first impression when applied under pressure. Express 2

Ultra-Light Body Quick thus helps reducing the risk of displacing the tray material, a problem typical for the 2-step technique

that occurs if the wash material builds up thick layers in the first impression, displaces it and then sets.

Express™ 2 Penta™ Putty VPS Impression Material combines classical

putty benefits, appreciated by many dentists – like high insertion

pressure and malleability – with the advantages of automatic mixing

in the Pentamix™ 2 Mixing Unit. The Pentamix 2 Mixing Unit offers

homogeneous and void-free consistent mixing quality as well as easy

and clean handling. Superior mixing quality of Express™ 2 Penta™ Putty with the Pentamix™ 2 Mixing Unit (green test specimen) compared with a putty mixed by hand (orange test specimen, Express™ Putty Standard)

Long Working Time and Fast Setting for 1Step Technique

For the 1-step technique the somewhat thicker and less structural viscous

wash material Express 2 Light Body Standard is recommended. For this

impression technique Express 2 Penta Putty offers a unique benefit: It

accelerates the intra-oral setting time of any VPS wash material. This

thermally active behaviour results from the fact that the putty already

has mouth temperature when dispensed from the Pentamix 2 Mixing

Unit. Therefore the VPS wash material warms up faster accelerating its

polymerisation which is strongly temperature dependent. The intra-oral

setting time is shortened, whereas the working time of the VPS wash

material remains unchanged. Dentists benefit from a long syringing time

in combination with a shorter setting time, which increases productivity

and patient comfort.

Real Putty with High Insertion Pressure

Like its predecessor Express Penta Putty the new Express 2 Penta Putty offers a true putty viscosity. 3M ESPE internal

and external comparative tests have shown that the insertion pressure of Express Penta Putty corresponds to that of typical

handmix putties and is much higher than the insertion pressure of heavy body VPS tray materials (internal tests 3M ESPE,

external study Prof. Wöstmann, Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, Germany – unpublished data).
