Exposure Or Exploitation? This week has seen the start of the Daily Telegraph’s #football4sale campaign which has seen Sam Allardyce and Tommy Wright lose their jobs but has corruption actually been exposed? Big Sam, seemingly under the influence, was candidly caught insulting the man he replaced as England manager only 67 days prior, he also directed some choice remarks in Gary Neville’s direction but although the manner was unbecoming of the man in English football’s top job, what rules have actually been broken? In Tommy Wright’s case, hadn’t the fraudulent Far Eastern based investors already been communicating directly with Barnsley Football Club proposing potential investment? Wasn’t Tommy Wright sent to meet the bogus money men on the club’s behalf? Were Barnsley not having to sell their better players to balance the books whilst restricting fees paid out? Was financial backing not what the club needed to progress to the next level? Massimo Cellino is far from perfect but it is well publicised that he has been looking for investment into Leeds United for a while, not a sale, investment. Once again, the fake financiers deployed by The Daily Telegraph struck with covert cameras in tow. Offering the lively Italian a potential cash injection was exactly what was needed to snare another unwitting football figure into another sham meeting.

They are just a few examples of what I feel has been an exploitation of the needs and yes, in part, the greed of people involved in the gold mine that is the football industry.I wholeheartedly expected #football4sale to bring to light those manipulating third party ownership and third party investment not just exaggerated chat from men willing to say anything to secure their deal be it investment or work. Anybody could say they know routes around TPO rules, most people with a decent understanding of the industry could explain how. What I hoped

to see was those circumventing the FA’s no go policy on third party ownership brought to justice.
