The College of St. Scholastica Library Last Revised January 16, 2018 1 Exporting Citations from Databases into EndNote EndNote is software that can organize, store, and input citations into Word documents to help you with your research. The College of St. Scholastica has a site license which offers two options for you to access EndNote, and you can either pick one or use both as the situation warrants. Please see the tutorials for how to use EndNote Download or EndNote Web as well as the appropriate database tutorials for more information on how to use those programs. Citations can be added to your EndNote library in two ways. The first is by you entering the source’s information such as the author, title, publication date, etc. into the various fields. The second way is by exporting the citations from the database you are using to search for articles directly into EndNote. This eliminates you having to type in the information, but you will still need to verify to make sure the citation is correct. Each database interacts with EndNote differently to export and import the citations, so see the instructions for these various databases to find out how to do it. This list is not inclusive, and some databases do not have this capability, so please ask a librarian for more help if you have any questions. For all EBSCO Databases (These include SOLAR, CINAHL, MEDLINE, SocINDEX, Business Source Ultimate, and any other database that has the EBSCO name on it) Add articles you want individually or several at a time by placing them in your Ebsco folder. Next, click on the circle for Direct Export to EndNote and then click the Save button.

Exporting Citations from Databases into EndNote EndNote is software that can organize, store, and input citations into Word documents to help

you with your research. The College of St. Scholastica has a site license which offers two options

for you to access EndNote, and you can either pick one or use both as the situation warrants.

Citations can be added to your EndNote library in two ways. The first is by you entering the

For all Proquest Databases

(These include Medical Library, Nursing & Allied Health, and newspapers)

When you have an article you wish to add to your EndNote library, click on the Save link to the

upper right of the article. Click on the RIS (works with EndNote,Citavi, etc.) link.

Select which Citation style from the pull down menu and then click on the Continue button.

Click on Save where you wish the file to be saved.

Open the EndNote library you wish to add the citation to and in the File tool bar option, select

Import and File…

Select the Import Option and click on Reference Manager (RIS).

Click on Choose… to select the file you just saved and click on Open.

Your citations will now automatically be added to your EndNote library.

For all Gale Databases

(These include Expanded Academic ASAP and Gale Virtual Reference Library)

Save articles you want to export by clicking on the box to the left of the citation and then click

on Saved Documents and select Citation Tools.

Select which citation style you would like by selecting it from the pull-down menu.

Select EndNote from the pull-down menu below Export To: and then click on the Export button.

Click on Save where you wish the file to be saved.

Import and File…

Select the Import Option and click on Reference Manager (RIS).

PubMed

Check the box before citations you want to export. Click on the drop down arrow after Send to:

Click on the circle in front of Citation manager and then click on Create File.

Click on Save where you wish the file to be saved.

Open the EndNote library you wish to add the citation to and in the File tool bar option, select

Import and File…

Click on Import Option and select PubMed Central (NLM).

Click on Choose… to select the file you just saved and click on Open.

Your citations will now automatically be added to your EndNote library.

JSTOR

Click on the Cite This Item link to get to the pop up where you can click on the clipboard to copy

the citation format you wish to use and then click on Export a RIS file for EndNote.

Click on Save where you wish the file to be saved.

Open the EndNote library you wish to add the citation to and in the File tool bar option, select

Import and File…

Select the Import Option and click on Reference Manager (RIS).

Click on Choose… to select the file you just saved and click on Open.

Your citations will now automatically be added to your EndNote library.

America’s Newspapers

Once you are viewing an article you wish to add to your EndNote library, click on the Cite link

to get this pop-up. Then click on the RIS Citation link.

Click on the Download citation as file link.

Click on save where you wish the file to be saved.

Open the EndNote library you wish to add the citation to and in the File tool bar option, select

Import and File…

Select the Import Option and click on Reference Manager (RIS).

Click on Choose… to select the file you just saved and click on Open.

Your citations will now automatically be added to your EndNote library.

Science Direct

Click on the Export pull down menu either at the top of the results or at the top of the article’s

page.

Select Citation Only or Citation and Abstract. As the default is set for EndNote, just click on the

Export button.

Click on Save where you wish the file to be saved.

Open the EndNote library you wish to add the citation to and in the File tool bar option, select

Import and File…

Click on Choose… to select the file you just saved and click on Open.

Your citations will now automatically be added to your EndNote library.

Lexis/Nexis

Add articles you want to export by click on the boxes in front of their title.

Then click on the book icon in the upper right hand corner of the screen.

Click on the circle in front of Download Bibliographic Data for other generators, e. g. EndNote

and then click on Export.

Click on Save where you wish the file to be saved.

Open the EndNote library you wish to add the citation to and in the File tool bar option, select

Import and File…

Select the Import Option and click on Reference Manager (RIS).

Reference Universe

Click on the box to the right of encyclopedias you wish to export.

Click on the Download button at the top of the screen.

Click on EndNote Tagged Format and then click on the Download button.

Click on Save where you wish the file to be saved.

Open the EndNote library you wish to add the citation to and in the File tool bar option, select

Import and File…

Select the Import Option and click on Refer/BibIX.

Click on Choose… to select the file you just saved and click on Open.

Your citations will now automatically be added to your EndNote library.

Cochrane

Click on the link to the left, Info. Then click on the View/save citation link.

Click on the EndNote link and then click on either the Citation or Citation & Abstract button.
