Various hazards are present during remediation works. We will look at some of the most common – including ground gas, VOCS, particulate and dust - and the types of technology available to enable informed decision-making and reporting, based on accurate and time-efficient detection and monitoring.
The risks associated with subsurface contamination are related to groundwater transport, but conceptualising the three-dimensional

flow of subsurface contaminants is difficult. Understanding groundwater flow paths requires big data technology to collect several hundred thousand data points and create a high-resolution image of subsurface reality, instead of a mere model. Andy provides environmental applications for this solution including: tracking pollution plumes, identifying seepage pathways from liquid impoundments and monitoring landfill leakage.

INNSA; DEALING WITH INVASIVE SPECIES
This seminar will explain why treatment of Japanese knotweed can take several years and how important it is that a programme of remediation is professionally tailored for each property. Many lending institutions impose conditions on providing loans and mortgages on properties where Japanese knotweed is present (or even present on neighbouring properties). Ensuring that remediation programmes carry insurance-backed warranties is essential.

“ASSUME ALL PAINTED MATERIAL CONTAINS LEAD” (HSE). A STRATEGIC CDM PROJECT RISK.
HSE advises to assume painted material contains lead, unless there is good evidence to prove otherwise. Disturbing lead-containing paint, dust or other material releases particle contamination, including lead fume from hot works, likely to be defined as a ‘significant’ (inhalation/ingestion) exposure risk. This triggers compliance requirements for: blood lead levels monitoring, training, personal air monitoring and PPE/RPE provision. Poor lead hazards awareness and shoddy understanding and application of CDM 2015 continue to perpetuate avoidable liabilities.
