Exploring the Americas

Exploration is a very important to the

history of the world.

Without exploration many countries would not exist today.

Exploration has occurred

since prehistoric

times.

In ancient and medieval times European, Asian

and Middle Eastern explorers traveled to new

lands.

In the 15 and 1600's

Europeans were the most

active explorers in the world.

As explorers came upon places that were new

to them, they encountered people who had been living

in these areas for centuries.

When Europeans arrived in the Americas they

found the land to be inhabited by

the people who are now called

American Indians.

Sometimes, explorers tried to

conquer or colonize new

lands. Frequently, fighting occurred between the new arrivals and local

peoples.
