The TempleThe Temple was the crucial to Jewish

identity and practice. For the Jews it wasthe focal centre of their national andreligious life. The Temple was a place of;

Gods PresenceThe Temple represented the presence ofGod among his people. Gods presenceresided in the Most Holy Place where aveil or curtain separated it from the restof the temple. As such only the High

priests (after cleansing) could enter.

Legal ActivityThe Sanhedrin, the highest council/court

in Jerusalem, met in the temple to dealwith religious and legal matters such astrails, punishments, and occasionallydeath.

DevotionThe temple connected man to God.

Circumcision, giving alms (gifts), worship,prayer, and teaching were all done at thetemple. As a Jew, your commitment toGod was judged by your acts of devotion

in the temple.

Animal SacrificesThe temple was the only place where

animal sacrifices for sins could be made.It was also the place where the priestwould restore an unclean person who washealed back into fellowship (Mtt. 8;4).

Restricted AccessAlthough people could worship there,areas in the temple were restricted. There

were courtyards; the gentiles courtyard,the womens courtyard, the priestscourtyard.

The Temple System FailedWhile the people were devoted to thetradition of the Temple they weredisconnect from the God of the temple.Despite Gods presence among them theleaders lost their way and led the Jews

astray.

Tradition over Gods Word Thus you nullify the word of God for the

sake of your tradition. You hypocrites! Isaiahwas right when he prophesied about you:These people honor me with their lips, buttheir hearts are far from me. They worshipme in vain; their teachings are but rules

taught by men. Matt. 15;6-9

Self RighteousnessTwo men went up to the temple to pray,

one a Pharisee and the other a taxcollector. The Pharisee stood up and prayed

about himself: 'God, I thank you that I amnot like other menrobbers, evildoers,

adulterersor even like this tax collector.

Woe to you, blind guides! You say, 'Ifanyone swears by the temple, it means

nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold ofthe temple, he is bound by his oath.' You

Disrespect for Gods Sacredness

Jesus entered the temple area and droveout all who were buying and selling there.

He overturned the tables of the moneychangers and the benches of those sellingdoves. "It is written," he said to them, " 'My

house will be called a house of prayer,' butyou are making it a 'den of robbers.

Jesus mission was to lay down his life andraise it up again to establish the Kingdom

of God in a way that the temple systemcould not do. By his death and resurrectionHe became a Temple substitute

establishing Gods full plan of redemption.

Intimate Presence of God

The tearing of the veil when Jesus died(Matt. 27;51) signifies that through Christ

(the spiritual Veil and High Priest) allbelievers have the liberty to experienceintimate communion with God.

Therefore, brothers, since we have

confidence to enter the Most Holy Placeby the blood of Jesus, by a new and livingway opened for us through the curtain, that

is, his body, and since we have a greatpriest over the house of God, let us drawnear to God with a sincere heart in full

Circumcision of the HeartCircumcision was a badge of nationalidentity and a sign of the spiritual covenantwith God. By Jesus death and resurrectionthere is no need for physical circumcision.Through Him all believers have a legal rightto be called children of God.

with a circumcision done by thehands of men but with the

circumcision done by Christ

By his death Jesus offered himself and his

blood once for all to provide permanentforgiveness and the opportunity to freelyfellowship with God. Thus, the need to offeranimal sacrifices is eliminated.

blood of goats and calves; but he

entered the Most Holy Place once forall by his own blood, having obtained

eternal redemption.

The death and resurrection of Jesusdestroyed the physical and spiritual wallsthat once separated the Jews fromGentiles. Despite ethnicity, every believernow partakes of Gods presence and

promises fully.
