Exploring Geofacets: User Guide

Geofacets empowers Geoscience professionals and researchers to make more informed and confident decisions, enabling organizations in Oil & Gas and Metals & Mining to optimize resources, prioritize opportunities, & mitigate risk, and Academic institutions to further Geoscience education & research.

1. Register / Login: Access features such as saved searches and alerts.

2. Home button: Return to the main page.

3. Keyword Search.

4. Geospatial search option: Rectangle search.

5. Geospatial search option: Polygon search.

6. Advanced Search.

7. Jump to region: Quickly focus the interactive map on a particular region.

8. Basemaps: option to select preferred basemap, e.g., ESRI maps, Bing maps.

9. Basemap Overlays: View basemap overlays of IODP/ODP/DSDP, C&C Reservoirs, Wood Mackenzie, Robertson and IHS.

10. Zoom To: Allows you to zoom in to a particular area on the map.

11. Reset Map: Allows you to refresh the map and return to the default world view.

12. My Geofacets: Save searches, alerts and maps to access later.

13. ArcGIS Plug-in: Download the Geofacets for ArcGIS Plugin to access Geofacets without leaving ArcGIS.

14. Help: Get more information.

15. Interactive Map: Zoom in (with ‘+’) or Zoom out (with ‘-’).

Getting Started

What you can find on the homepage.

Enter any term OR

Select a suggestion from the list.

Keyword Search

Use this option for specific searches of geoscientific information and data. Perform a fielded search with boolean operators as needed. For instance:

• Search among the library of basins, countries and regions

• Search for a specific author or content type

Advanced Search

1. Use Rectangle Search to draw a box on the interactive map and locate maps, figures and tables for a selected area.

2. Use Polygon Search to draw a shape on the interactive map and locate maps, figures and tables for a specific geographical area.

3. Use ‘within’ to find maps, figures and tables with centerpoints within the drawn search box. Toggle to ‘intersect’ to return all maps that intersect with the search box.

How to: SearchChoose the search option that best suits your need:

• Keyword search option: To search for results about a specific topic or geological feature

• Rectangle or polygon search options: To quickly find results for a particular area

• Advanced search option: For more options

1. Search summary: Displays the search parameters, along with options to refine (by Rectangle and Polygon search), option to set alerts, & more.

2. Filter pane: Quickly narrow down results.

3. Search results: Displays the results with different viewing options (e.g., grid view, list view, source documents).

4. Map Interface: Blue clusters show the location of the results on the interactive map. Numbers indicate the number of search results for the cluster location.

Refine your search results by setting the various filter options. For e.g. you can:

• Select maps by setting the ‘Content Type’ filter to ‘Map’.

• Select content sourced from AAPG by setting the ‘Publisher/Content Source’ filter to ‘American Association of Petroleum Geologists’.

Switch views between grid and list views, or change the size of the thumbnail results display.

Hover on the individual result thumbnail and click the icon to perform actions like: Download the map / figure / table, pin the result on map, add the result to your list, & more.

How to: Explore search resultsUtilize the filters and the intuitively laid out results to filter and explore the search results.

The Details Page can be launched by clicking on an individual search result. This page provides you with access to several key details, including:

1. The article title at the top.

2. An inset map and the content from the same article on the left.

3. The result on the right with caption, metadata.

4. Article information, including abstract.

5. Article Viewer, provides access to a read-only version of the source article.

6. Publisher link, for viewing the source article at the publisher site.

Details Page

You can easily integrate relevant results into GIS, presentation or spreadsheet software, after you have ascertained that this is a relevant result.

How to: Utilize the content found on GeofacetsThe user-interface in Geofacets provides you with excellent visibility into all necessary details of your search results.

Interactive Map: Basemap overlays

Source Documents: Export referencesWhen you click on the ‘Source Documents’ tab on the Results Page, you have the option select relevant results and Export their references.

Several basemap overlay options are available in Geofacets. For e.g. the IODP overlay (as displayed in the adjacent image).

Your first step to a more personal experience on Geofacets – Registration provides several benefits.

A one-stop shop for accessing your alerts preferences, accessing your saved searches and your saved lists, and to change your password and edit your profile on Geofacets.
