This season, navigate Europe aboard Lord of the Glens, National Geographic Explorer, and the newest ship in our fleet, National Geographic Endurance. Supremely comfortable with lots of outdoor space for observing the passing scenes, and as few as 48 guests to a still intimate 148, each is more yachtlike in scale making Europe exceptionally rewarding.

Our ships give us the flexibility to explore anywhere, from tiny islands in the Swedish archipelago, to charming villages or the slenderest Norwegian fjords, and through the very heart of Scotland. You’ll enter Europe through the front door, so to speak, greeting each new location in the time-honored way. Each of the itineraries featured here contains a sequence and rhythm that is the antithesis of rushed or consumption-oriented. While many of the sites we visit are in one sense already discovered, we as individuals might not have had the pleasure.

Our expedition teams, including the historians and other experts who enhance your experience, are committed to doing whatever it takes to make your experience unforgettable. Our hotel staff is keenly aware that in Europe, cuisine is an essential part of the experience. They offer culinary experiences that consistently earn rave reviews. We invite you to take the opportunity our Europe expeditions offer you to be transformed—by the simple act of having traveled, reflected, and absorbed remarkable places and the nature that formed them.

ANCIENT CITIES AND MODERN LANDMARKS FROM THE NORTH SEA TO THE BALTIC

4

The waterways of Northern Europe and Scandinavia are home to beautiful coastal cities that have played a crucial and storied role in history. Sea-facing and settled by people at home on the sea, they invite National Geographic Explorer in through the front door.

Voyaging the North Sea, from Copenhagen to London, we’ll explore charming, riverside towns that sprang up along Old-World trade routes. Marvel at the elaborate architecture of well-preserved medieval cities such as Lübeck, a German port founded in 1143 that’s

now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On a guided tour of Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum, acquire an insider’s view of the resident Rembrandts and Vermeers. And because you’re on an expedition, spontaneity and flexibility play a role; if something unplanned and wonderful happens, we’ll take the time to pause and experience it, not simply sail by.

ANCIENT CITIES AND MODERN LANDMARKS FROM THE NORTH SEA TO THE BALTIC

Meanwhile, cruising the Baltic Sea allows us to sail routes of the Hanseatic League, in the paths of early traders and nobles. By exploring the various countries that line the Baltic this way, you can better discover their intertwined histories and delve deep into fascinating cultures. Wander the medieval Old Towns of Riga and Tallinn, explore dazzling St. Petersburg, and dine on local specialties—or enjoy a deck party in the tranquil Swedish Archipelago. Our seasoned expedition leaders, historians—including World War II expert Mark Bielski—and naturalists will enhance your experience.

England, Ireland, and Scotland are must-visits for travelers, and with good reason. But there’s a way to encounter the Isles in a way few, including the inhabitants, have seen them—from the unique vantage point of an agile expedition ship. Our approach to exploring by sea allows you to get close to rare marvels, like the tropical gardens on the Isles of Scilly. Beehive huts atop Skellig Michael, built by 6th century Celtic monks. Cliffs thronged with

northern gannets at St. Kilda. The haunting and beautiful abbey at Iona. Despite centuries of civilization in these parts, there is a pervasive wildness and a visible pre-history.

In Scotland, Lord of the Glens is able to venture to the heart of the country via canals and then sail to the wild Inner Hebrides. National Geographic Explorer and National Geographic Endurance ably sail the North Sea in the wake of explorers and seafarers whose routes you’ll trace to ancient ruins, towering cliffs, and dramatic seascapes. And you won’t just take in the sights from onboard. Zodiac cruising, kayaking, hiking, and walking through countryside of near-mythic pastoral charm, plus historian-guided tours—all are made easy on our in-depth journeys.

LANDSCAPES AND CULTURES LIKE NO OTHERS ON EARTH, UNIQUELY EXPERIENCED ON A SHIP VOYAGETravelers to Iceland often already know the basics about Reykjavík and the country’s natural marvels—but traveling by ship leads to discoveries that most visitors to the “land of fire and ice” don’t get to appreciate.

It means coming ashore in small towns and villages that were isolated and only accessible by water until the late 20th century. Or arriving by Zodiac at the base of world-class waterfalls hours away from bus or car access. You can explore stark volcanic landscapes, see towering cliffs teeming with nesting seabirds, cruise among magnificent icebergs in Jökulsárlón, or watch for humpbacks and minke whales in the remote Westfjords. Feel the legacy of Viking explorers as you stroll through historic villages. Even enjoy private on-board talks with local artists and politicians, and concerts with top Icelandic performers who have been picked exclusively by our ethnomusicologist, Jacob Edgar. Of course, you might cap off the adventure with a soak in the famous Blue Lagoon.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC EXPLORER SAILS ON A MISSION OF DISCOVERY

The waterways of Northern Europe and Scandinavia are home to beautiful coastal cities that have played a crucial and storied role in history. And on our expeditions, you can enter these destinations the way they were meant to be—via the sea. Aboard National Geographic Explorer, you can see what Vikings saw as they set out for uncharted territory. Or use the fact that you’ll be arriving at towns near the storied WWII beaches from the sea, to contemplate the men who came the same way on a very different mission 75 years ago. Thousands of years of culture in this region have been interwoven with the

sea; what better way to encounter it than by ship?

Explore aboard National Geographic Explorer on these itineraries: Circumnavigating the Baltic Sea (page 6) ; North Sea Voyage: Northern Europe & the Normandy Beaches (page 7);Ancient Isles: England, Ireland & Scotland (page 10); Legendary Northern Isles: Scotland, Faroes & Iceland (page 16); Wild Iceland Escape (page 18); and A Circumnavigation of Iceland (page 20)

While every Scotland expedition sails with a Lindblad-National Geographic certified photo instructor to help you make the most of some of the most picturesque photo ops in the world, select expeditions include a National Geographic Photographer for added inspiration. Be inspired and guided on the August 2, 2020 voyage by National

Geographic photographer Jim Richardson, author of more than 50 stories for National Geographic and National Geographic Traveler magazines, who once spent two years shooting the Celtic realm for the March 2006 article, “Celt Appeal.”
