It truly was a fun day at EKA. The high schoolers ran the carnival games that were created by the secondary students during their first Global Project of the year.
These games were part of a multi-age group project whereby the groups designed, built and then competed against other secondary students to determine the best carnival game. The winners of the contest were then used at the EKA Fun Day! It was a great way for our students to see their project efforts come to life. The high school students, along with a few parents, also manned the Trunk or Treat
vehicles that were decked out to add to the fun and excitement.
Each grade level group attended the festivities for 90 minutes, spending time playing the carnival games, receiving candy at the Trunk or Treat and then having
snow cones thanks to the generous donation of Kona Ice. At the end of their time, they then received a bag full of prizes and surprises to end out their Fun Day.
The PTSA was on hand to give support, provide some carnival games, candy and the prizes that the students received. They also awarded prizes to the best costumes at each grade level group and for the best decorated vehicle in the Trunk or Treat.
It was great to have so many groups coming together to support our kids.
We hope that everyone had as great a time as we did at the EKA Fun Day!
Some of our award winners for the day were:
Bekah V. & Kay C.The Super Mario Bros Car

Elementary - Note from the Principal
Elementary Parents and Students,
As we ease into fall, the number of accomplishments and activities is great. All of our students have completed at least one project and have presented their new-found knowledge in front of their peers; this is something many adults never even had the opportunity to do. Our students have also significantly increased their knowledge of technology through using our online curriculum programs (Reading Wonders and My Math), Google Classroom, Learning.com, and Learning Farm. Many students have also experienced their first off-campus learning experiences by attending one or more of our field trips.
I want to extend a huge thank you for all of our families that have attended conferences and at least one family engagement. These events are vital to creating a strong partnership which will help our children to be successful in all of their school endeavors. Additionally, they provide resources and provide a true gauge of where your child's progress is at this point of the school year.
Here at EKA we strive for a strong, rigorous academic program balanced by fun, team building activities (dress up days, Fun Days, field trips, theme days, etc.). However, only students who are at school, on time, every day can get the full benefit of our school. Advisors cannot teach students who are not at school, especially when they are only with your children four days each week. Attendance has been proven to significantly impact a child's success in school. I ask that all families make it a priority for your child to be at school, on time, every day. Consider this...if a child was to be just five minutes late for school every day this year he or she would miss TWELVE hours of instruction! When students improve their attendance rates, they improve their academic prospects and chances for graduation.
Thank you,
Ms. Gustafson

EKA is proud to say that we have 20 seniors this year! Did you know that in order to participate in the senior trip and the EKA graduation ceremony, every senior must complete a 120 hour senior project? These capstone projects span at least their senior year, some actually start in their junior year, and are meant to prepare students for post-secondary education and the workforce once they graduate. Components of these senior projects include community service or service learning opportunities, multiple public speaking and
presentation occasions, EKA student involvement, and the requirement that it must give back to the school community or our local community. Though daunting at first, we repeatedly
hear from our graduates that this final project is their best preparation for life after EKA and enables them to seamlessly move on to college, obtain employment, and most
importantly, learn about themselves.
Throughout this year you will see opportunities for you to support and help our seniors with their various projects. Thank you for helping us to create leaders, one senior project at a
time!
Some project titles this year include:
EKA’s First High School Reunion (Graduating Classes 2005 – 2017)Helping the HomelessCancer Awareness
Sea Dragon SculptureDocumenting EKA through photography

Jonathan Vivas* Studying Chemistry at
UNLV
* Class of 2015
Since graduating from EKA in 2015, Jon Vivas has begun working on an undergraduate degree in Chemistry at UNLV. His life path has driven him to come back to EKA in how he already had personal connections to current employees and had volunteered during summers. After graduation, he was offered a position and accepted it without hesitation. Jon is the I.T. Assistant at EKA and has been working here for over a year now. “It is the best job I have had to this day.” Jon has been an essential part in implementing the technology updates that
the school has received since his graduation. His plan for the future contains graduate work and possibly research in organic chemistry, but is keeping his options open.
“My fondest memory of EKA was during english class with Ms. Twardzik. A friend of mine, Skyler, had brought a bottle of hot sauce to school like he always did. Ms. Twardzik told him to put it away before he made a mess, to which he responded, I paraphrase, “I have had this bottle for years, and never
spilled it once.” Afterwhich, he proceeded to place it in his backpack when the bottle fell out, shattered, and released it saucy hotness everywhere.”
If I could give advice to my past self, it would be this: “Beauty lies in understanding the truth of the world, and science is the doorway to that discovery.
Learn to work hard, but more importantly, work hard to learn.”
Objective: A spotlight on EKA grads to showcase their milestones, accomplishments & achievements.

Jayme Jo Thompson (Walls)* Office Specialist in Elementary
* Class of 2011Jayme has enjoyed life and following her passions since graduating EKA in 2011. Her
biggest accomplishments are helping her father run a motorsports business for 5 years which helped her realize how much potential she has as a person, becoming more
independant and marrying the man of her dreams! Her husband suffered a traumatic brain injury last summer and helping him recover and being able to overcome the biggest obstacle in her life thus far, even though it's been a struggle, has made Jayme all the
more a stronger and compassionate person. Jayme has always had a connection to EKA since her mother, Ms. Rita, has worked here for over 11 years! Jayme has recently started working at EKA as of August 2017 as an Office Specialist in Elementary and she loves it! “I have always loved engaging with people and being around office duties. It is something I
truly enjoy.”
Since graduating, EKA has become more amazing. “Everything is more organized and professionalized. Not that it wasn’t when I attended as a student, but with Abbe as Superintendent and Hope as Operations Manager, they have it all under control.” Her plans for the future is to live life genuinely happy and having a career to build on. “I
believe EKA can give me that, and if I enjoy it, then I will stick to it.”
“My most favorite memory of EKA was my senior year, my graduating class, and the advisors that helped me succeed: Mr. Quinn, Mr. Webster, Ms. Hope, Ms. Mattson, Mrs. Keyer, and Mrs.
LaBree.”
“If I could give a word of advice to my younger self, I would say a couple of things:
Don’t stress, college isn’t the only option, find your passion, and enjoy the moment.”

Brittany Mattson* Working on a Bachelors in Accounting at UNLV
* Class of 2013
(Her fondest memory at EKA is performing on stage with her mother at the Talent Show and Pep Rallies)
Brittany Mattson grew up with her school family and is now surrounded by her personal and school family once more! Since graduating, Britt has been working on a Bachelors in Accounting at UNLV and joined a
sorority that works with children in hospitals. While recovering from an injury, she came back to EKA to fill in for a middle school art teacher on maternity leave and was asked to permanently stay on. “I never would have imagined becoming a teacher, but I am loving it. I have always been crafty, but never saw myself as an artist. This opportunity has helped my inner artist flourish and has taught me so much
about the art in our world.” This is Britt’s first year teaching and plans to stay at EKA for as long as she can. “I am fortunate to work with a team that I grew up with and have my mentors surrounding me. This
school is truly my home, especially since I get to see my sister, mother and niece everyday.”
EKA has changed since (I) was a student in “so many ways! Although rules might be more strict and classes more regimented now, I do believe all of the changes that have been made have helped prepare students for post-secondary education. When I first started school at the secondary campus as a 6th
grader, we only had two periods, for math and English, and the other four or so classes were completed during project time, which lasted most of the day. This required students to be more independent, but left room for laziness. The biggest change of all has been that all students, K to 12, are now on one
campus. This has created integration with staff and projects school-wide.”
Britt’s advice to younger students is: “Life hasn’t even started yet. Don’t dwell on the little things because your perception will widen
immensely once you step into adulthood. High school is about trial and error. Yes, grades are important, but what’s more important is figuring out what kind of person you want to be, and making as many
mistakes necessary to learn how to get there.”

Corinne “Krin” Mattson
* Masters at Sierra Nevada College
* Class of 2008
Both EKA and Krin Mattson have changed immensely since she was a student here. Just 3 classes away from her Masters, Krin has found a job she loves and has also got engaged! She originally was going to pursue a degree in business, but then got a life changing phone call to come and work back at EKA as a remedial math teacher. One thing led to another and now she is a full time middle school advisor and math teacher. In addition to this, she is also the tech tester, the google classroom person, and the overall how to make this work person (after Nate...or before him if he is busy). “I love working here, and love the students.” Krin’s future plans are to get her Masters and move into Curriculum Development, even if it means leaving the school that started her journey.
Since graduating, EKA has changed in how “(it) is no longer a last chance school, and I miss it at times. I would have never made the friends I did if it was the same as today. Now, the school has a true home (no more strip malls or business complexes), we have a multi-purpose room with a real hot lunch program, and the curriculum pushes the kids.”
Walking to the park for PE, and screaming at the top of my lungs because we could...Staying up all night at my house in order to take a bus to Disneyland at 4 am..(my fondest memories at EKA are) really anything where I was able to hang out with my friends, and just be accepted. Krin’s advice to her younger self is: “To cherish the relationship you make, because those people may need you later in life. Those same people you drift away from may later be gone, and you will not be able to reach out and rekindle the fun and friendship.”
