Purpose: To see how valley glaciers affect thesurface.

Materials: stream table with sand pailice block containing sand, clay, and gravelmetric ruler overhead light source with reflector

Methods:1. Set up the stream table as shown_2. Make a river channel. Measure its width & depth.Record this in results under "river before" glacier.3. Position the light source so that the light shines onthe stream bed as shown.

. Cf. Place the ice block (glacier) in the river channel at theupper end of the stream table. Measure the width & depthof the glacier. Record this under "glacier before" melting.Record observations of the glacier.5. Gently push the "glacier" along the river channel until it ishalfway between the top and the bottom of the stream tableand is positioned directly under the light. Measure theriver's width and depth. (Portion where glacier scraped theriver). Record these in results table under "river after"glacier went through: Record observations of this area.6. Turn on the light and allow the ice to melt. Finish taking

~ 1/ classroom notes. Then observe & record what happened to~ the glacier under "glacier appearance after melting".7. Measure the width and depth of the river channel below where the glacier stopped.Record these in results table under "after" melting.8. Record observations of the river bed below where the glacierstopped. Draw a sketch of the river bed, label: terminal morraine, lateral moraine, bedrock, outwash plain, and alluvial fan.

Conclusions:1. What happened to the valley river bed as you pushed the glacier forward?

2. What formed at the lower end of the glacier after you stopped moving it in step 5?

Sec __ Name: _3. As the glacier melted, what happened to the river below the melting glacier?

4. Explain how you can determine the direction from which a glacier traveled byconsidering the shape of the channel and the location of deposits.

Discussion:

1. Can you determine the direction of glacial movement from sediments deposited bymeltwater? Explain how.

2. How do valley glaciers affect the surface over which they move?

3. Do "using math" question on page 180 of your textbook in the following space.

4a. Read Job 37: 6 - 13. In these verses what does Job say God's breath produces? What happens to the broad waters?

4b. What role does God have in nature (verse 12)?

4c. In verse 13 Job describes at least two purposes for God controlling nature.Describe each.

clouds to water his Earth to _

4d. Infer from verses 6 - 13 about Gqd's role in forming glaciers and having "ice ages".

5. Ust the similarities of valley and continental glaciers:1.

2.

3.

6. List the differences between valley and continental glaciers:Valley Glaciers Continental Glaciers

1,2.

3.

4.

7. Identify the glaciers described below by writing "valley glacier" "continentalglacier" or "both".

a. It has pieces that break off as icebergs.

b. They are the kind of glaciers found in Montana.

c. The deposit till and outwash.

d. They covered much of Earth during ice ages.

e. They form U - shaped valleys.
