WELCOME TO S Q UA M I S H B C

Welcome to Squamish, the Outdoor Recreational

Capital of Canada! Located between Vancouver

and Whistler in Sea to Sky country, Squamish is

famous for its snow-capped peaks, lush rainforests,

white-water rivers, ocean sound and massive granite

monolith—the Stawamus Chief. The incredible range

of geological features—borne from the interplay of

volcanic activity and an ice age—attracts adventurers

and sightseers all year round.

Squamish means “Mother of Wind” and is named

after the peoples of the Coast Salish culture who live

here today, and whose descendants have inhabited

the region for millennia. On sunny days between May

to September, Squamish’s thermal winds sweep up

the valley, creating perfect conditions for sailing, kite-

boarding and windsurfing. Other spring, summer and

autumn activities include rock climbing, golfing, fish-

ing and white-water rafting. Since Squamish has a

mild climate, many activities can be enjoyed all year,

such as hiking, biking, horseback riding, flight seeing

and gondola sightseeing. In the winter, travellers visit

to experience eagle watching and backcountry ski-

ing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling.

No matter the season, Squamish has plenty of com-

munity events, markets and festivals to keep the

whole gang entertained, whether you’re looking for

an intimate gathering, family-friendly entertainment,

sporting events or world-class festivals. The Test of

Metal is an epic mountain-bike race in mid-June that

features some of the gnarliest cross-country and

downhill riding on the West Coast. In August, the

Squamish Days Loggers Sports Festival showcases

Squamish’s rich heritage, whereas the Squamish

Valley Music Festival blends a music festival with

the nostalgia of a vintage family holiday. Community

markets gather together local farmers, foodies, artists

and designers to offer a smorgasbord of culinary and

artisanal delights.

To learn about Squamish’s history, stop by the Squamish

Museum at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park. The

Page 5: Experience Squamish Guide 2015–2016

area was first visited by Europeans when Captain George

Vancouver and crew sailed up Howe Sound in 1792

aboard the ship Discovery. In the next century tens of

thousands of traders and prospectors flocked to the port

on their journey up to the Cariboo Gold Rush of 1858.

Squamish transitioned into a farming community

when Alec Robertson and his wife became the

first non-native settlers in 1888. Forestry gradually

replaced the agrarian economy, and when a railway

was built connecting Squamish to Vancouver in

1956—followed by a road two years later—the com-

munity took steps towards welcoming the world to

experience its astounding beauty.

The original adventure tourists were from the British

Columbia Mountaineering Club, climbers who were

eager to make first attempts on the peaks encircling

the Squamish Valley. Today, no visit to Squamish is

complete without a hike up the Stawamus Chief, the

second largest granite monolith in the world. Formed

from an ancient volcano, the Chief is in fact a magma

chamber that was exposed when glaciers eroded the

softer, surrounding rock during the last ice age. The

view from the top encompasses downtown Squa-

mish, the sparkling waters of Howe Sound, and the

surrounding mountain peaks—a true reward for your

efforts. For those who would like to experience the

views from an alternate angle, take an accessible

and exhilarating ride on the Sea to Sky Gondola. At

the top, there are a number of viewing platforms, a

breathtaking suspension bridge, and easy hikes to

enjoy the ever-changing views as you circle around

the Summit Trail Network.

Whether you’re seeking exciting activities, physical ex-

ertion, an adrenaline rush, or a simple connection with

nature in a friendly, welcoming community, Squamish

has it all. We suggest checking out the extra detail in

this guide that describes the three main geographic

areas of Squamish and their related features and

activities—the Executive Suites, Garibaldi and Down-

town. Enjoy your stay!

The Garibaldi Highlands and Garibaldi Estates are

two areas with names which echo that of Squamish’s

impressive Mount Garibaldi, whose namesake was

Giuseppe Garibaldi, a 19th century Italian general.

The mountain itself is a volcano that grew unusually

when it exploded onto a massive glacier during the

last ice age. 10,000 years ago, when the ice receded,

the sides of the mountain collapsed, leaving a debris

feature known as the Cheekye Fan.

Many local residents have made their home in the

Highlands, as the sunny area is built on the hillside

benches that overlook the whole Squamish valley

and the blue waters of Howe Sound. To the north,

Garibaldi Estates has a vibrant mix of residential,

commercial and retail properties. This is a great place

to pick up just what you need while you’re in town.

You’ll find grocery stores, a post office, liquor store,

convenience stores, gas stations and a variety of res-

taurants. On Tantalus Road, behind Extra Foods, is

Squamish’s restaurant row, with many ethnic eateries

to choose from.

The area is also a hub for a diverse range of sport-

ing activities. Located along the bends of the

Mamquam River, The Squamish Valley Golf Club is

popular with Vancouver and Whistler golfers for its

classic parkland and five lakes built into the design.

Brennan Park is a community recreational facility

with ball and soccer fields, BMX track, skateboard

park, mini bike skills area, campground, pool, ice

rink and civic centre.

Drive south a few kilometres down Highway 99 and

you’ll enter the Squamish Business Park, located

between the Garibaldi area and the downtown. The

Business Park hosts large, service-based businesses

such as a distillery of fine spirits, automotive sales

and repair shops, home building and furnishing

stores, and manufacturing businesses.

Located south of Whistler in the Paradise Valley, this is a spectacular float tour with scenic vistas of the local mountains and glaciers. With long stretches of fun and easy rapids, this is the perfect option for families and guests who would like a softer adventure. This tour includes a refreshment and a light snack.

This iconic adventure provides thrill-seek-ers with the challenge of one of BC’s biggest rivers. Paddle the exhilarating class 3-4 rapids of the Elaho before flowing into the Squamish River where you will enjoy waterfalls, glaciers and forests with a true backcountry feel. Enjoy both a river snack on your journey and a locally sourced BBQ lunch after your tour.

KEEPING PEOPLE & BEARS SAFE IN SQUAMISHKEEPING PEOPLE & BEARS SAFE IN SQUAMISHSquamish is located in prime black bear habitat, so whether you are hiking in the forest or strolling through a residential area, you may encounter a bear. Seeing a bear can be a memorable experience, but to protect yourself and keep bears wild, it is important to understand how to behave around them. This requires an understanding of bears and their behavior as well as the role people play in creating conflicts.

If a bear appears to be a threat to human safety; is accessing non-natural foods; or is destroying property, call 1-877-952-7277. For more information on vacationing in bear country, email us at [email protected] or visit us online at bearsmart.com

Located at the north end of Howe Sound, the downtown quarter is the business hub of Squamish, and primed for an exciting expansion with the new Squamish Oceanfront development. Once an agricultural area and trading post in the 1890’s, the downtown area began to grow with the completion of a railway connection to Pemberton in 1914, as well as the construction of a deep sea dock and marina.

Now an economic centre, downtown Squamish offers a wide variety of amenities to explore, including specialty shops, boutiques, restaurants, pharmacies, banks, City Hall, public library, grocery stores, a post office, art galleries, retail shops, and the Squamish Yacht Club.

One of the first stops you should make when you arrive in town, is to visit the Squamish Adventure Centre, located just off Highway 99 at Cleveland Avenue. You can’t miss the sweeping mountain architecture, huge glass windows and stone Inukshuk out front. Grab a coffee at Caffe Garibaldi while the kids zip around the play area, watch a movie in the 45 seat theatre, and learn about all of the activities and adventures you can do in Squamish at the Visitor Information Centre. The Squamish Adventure Centre also has a handy bike wash area, so you can clean your bikes at the end of your day.

From the downtown, it’s a short drive to access your next outdoor adventure in Squamish’s phenomenal natural surroundings, at the Sea to Sky Gondola, Shannon Falls, and the Stawamus Chief climbing

routes and hiking trails.
