Tips to keeping seniors safe at home

Safety is a big concern for seniors and their families, especially as more baby

boomers are embracing aging at home. Many home updates can help protect senior family members, allowing them to enjoy their homes for many more years.

Security AlArmAn alarm system is always a good

idea, and many will also connect to fire protection services as well. Sliding patio doors are among the least secure entrances to a home, so install a security bar to resist any type of forced entry into the home.

Keep extrA KeyS SecureMany family members of seniors

like to have access to a home so they can check on their loved ones. Instead of hiding the keys under a fake rock in the yard, protect them with a key safe. The safe attaches over the door handle for

easy accessibility and requires a four-button push code to reveal the keys. It’s also great for emergency situations if a family member acci-dentally locks the keys inside the house on a cold night.

Security lightingExterior lights help discourage

unwanted guests. Install motion-sensor lights if you don’t want them shining all night long, but you might notice nighttime critters like owls and raccoons will set the lights off.

mulated a lifetime of treasures. Smaller items like jewelry, credit cards and cash can easily be stored in a portable safe, which is perfect for traveling or even to visit grand-children. For important legal docu-ments a fire-resistant safe is a good option.

Flexible SchedulingOftentimes, seniors will get into

a regular schedule like meeting a group of friends for breakfast at 7 a.m. every Tuesday. Create an irregular schedule for your weekly activities so people won’t be able to anticipate when you’re home or away.

Volunteers needed to serve lunch — that sure sounds easy enough.  Well, it is!

Hot, nutritious meals are provided to seniors at vari-ous locations in our community through the Fond du Lac County Senior Services Department. A wonderful crew of volunteers is what makes it all possible. That is where you come in. We need more volunteers to join the current teams to continue this great service.

The lunch program is more beneficial to the recipients that just the well-balanced full-course meal.  It allows time for folks to gather with others as they eat.

Current volunteer, Marilyn Luebke, says “I enjoy serving people, welcoming them, and talk-ing with them. It is hard not to look forward to seeing some of the same people every week!”

This is a very flexible opportu-nity for volunteers. Volunteers choose how much time they want to serve; one day a month, two days a month, once a week, or as much as you like. On the weekday the volunteer serves the time is 10:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.

“Just get out and do some volun-teering,” says longtime lunch volunteer Caroline Mueller. “It makes me feel so much better.  I have been doing this quite a while and I am very relaxed.”

Mike Bugni, another happy lunch volunteer, says “I enjoy my time volunteering. I have been

cult for most people to remember multiple passwords, so many write them down, which can make them vulnerable to theft. doing this a while. I set up and get things ready too; it is easy.  After everyone is served the volunteers get to sit down and have a free lunch!”

Volunteers age 55 and over also qualify for mileage reimbursement through the RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program).

So, let’s listen to Caroline’s advice and “get out and volunteer!” Even if it is just twice a month or once a week, your time is valuable.

Retirement means different things to different people. Fond du Lac native, Dave Candlish, 76, uses his God-given talents

to create unique dollhouses and unusual bird houses.

A life-long resident of Fond du Lac, Dave graduated from Goodrich High School (now Fond du Lac High School) in June 1956 and then joined the U.S. Navy. He received an honorable discharge in1959 and married Diana in 1961.

Dave’s work history involves many positions — from working at a local broom factory, construction work, driving an ambulance, working at Giddings and Lewis — and even helping his father, Dave Candlish Sr., at Candlish Funeral Home (now known as Mach Funeral Chapel & Crematory). Dave eventually fi nished his working career when he retired in 2001, after

retirement. He admitted the only experience in that fi eld was in high school when he took woodworking and drafting classes.

As a youngster, he looked to his father and grandfather as his mentors, and acquired some of his bigger tools from them. In his workshop, he has a special table, and other tools of the trade, namely a table saw, jointer and planer, jig saw, drill press, scroll saw, router accessories and hand tools.

Dave has some special patterns and gets additional ideas from magazines and pictures. He has no preference of building bird houses to dollhouses. He quipped, “Anything to keep me busy!”

The dollhouses he makes almost always come from kits, which can be purchased at hobby stores. The largest doll house he completed

was three feet, with three stories high, where the smallest one was 2 feet by 2 feet.

Dave puts actual wallpaper in the rooms and will custom paint the colors of the house for the recipient's desires. He estimates he has completed at least two dozen dollhouses and added, “I work on the big ones in the winter months. Those are winter projects.”

Dave has also made miniature log cabins from his own creative designs. He has even made a six-foot grandmother (not a typo) clock of oak wood, which is proudly displayed in his living room. He stated it is a bit smaller than a grandfather clock.Over the years, Dave has donated two dollhouses, a miniature barn, several bird houses, bird feeders and suet feeders for the auctions at his church for their fall bazaars.

The smallest bird houses Dave has made are 5-6 inches tall, and up to a two-story bird house. A simple bird house can be completed in about half an hour, while a detailed one can take much longer, “depending on the details,” he explained.

Isabell M. Mueller, attorney

A trust is a legal arrangement under which there are three primary roles: the grantor, who is the creator of the trust, the trustee,

who manages the property owned by the trust, and the benefi ciary, for whose benefi t the trust exists. The creator of the trust may also be referred to as the donor or the settlor. Depending upon the pur-pose of the trust, these three positions may be held by a single party, or they may be held by three sepa-rate parties. It is also possible for a single trust to have more than one grantor, more than one trustee and more than one benefi ciary. Once a trust is cre-ated, it is capable of owning property. It may even have its own tax payer identifi cation number and be required to fi le income tax returns. There are many different types of trusts, differentiated from one another by the purpose for which they were created.

Probably the most common type of trust is the revocable trust, also called the living trust. The primary purpose of a revocable trust is to provide a means of settling the grantor’s fi nancial affairs upon his or her death in a manner that does not in-volve the probate process. The grantor serves as

the trustee of the revocable trust, and during his or her lifetime, is the only benefi ciary. In Wisconsin, a married couple can create one joint revocable trust for the both of them. The trust document itself con-tains instructions as to how the grantor’s assets are to be divided after his or her death, and also names a successor trustee. The assets owned by the trust avoid probate because although the grantor may have died, the trust itself continues to exist. The successor trustee receives his or her authority and instructions from the trust agreement, not the pro-bate court. The successor trustee’s duties, however, are essentially the same as those of the personal representative of a probate estate in that he or she has to pay the fi nal taxes, expenses and debts of the

deceased and then distribute the balance of the trust assets to the benefi ciaries according to the grantor’s instructions. Once this is done, the trust is termi-nated.

Simply creating a revocable trust is not enough to avoid probate. Rather, after the trust has been cre-ated, the grantor’s assets should in some manner be coordinated with the trust. With some assets, such has real estate, automobiles, bank accounts or non-qualifi ed investment accounts, this will mean chang-ing the actual title to the trust. The grantor does not lose any ownership or control of these assets because although the trust owns the assets, the grantor owns the trust. With other assets, such as life insurance, IRA, 401(k) or annuities, the benefi -ciary designations will be changed, not the title. In some instances, however, the benefi ciary designa-tions should not be changed at all. Coordinating the assets with the trust is a detail oriented process and should always be undertaken carefully.

It is important to note, however, that while a revo-cable trust can be quite useful, it is not necessarily the best choice for everyone. Consultation with an estate planning professional is necessary to deter-mine whether or not a revocable trust is the best fi t.

Estate planning: The revocable trust

The primary purpose of a revocable trust is to provide a means of settling the grantor’s fi nancial a airs upon

An orange sticker can save a life

Those struggling with chronic health issues can learn ways to cope with these challenges and improve their quality of life. Entitled “Living Well with Chronic Conditions,” the workshop empowers those living with arthritis, heart problems, asthma, stroke, pain, osteoporosis, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and cancer. The workshop will meet once a week for six weeks. Two trained leaders will cover the following topics:● Symptom management● Dealing with emotions such as anger and depression

Managing Chronic ConditionsRamon Pajarillo, physician

Despite continuing efforts to educate the public, miscon-ceptions and inaccuracies

about organ and tissue donation persist. It’s important to learn the facts about organ, eye and tissue do-nation, so you can make an informed decision about becoming a potential donor.

Currently more than 123,000 men, women and children are awaiting organ transplants to save their lives. Thousands more are in need of tissue and cornea transplants to restore their mobility and sight.

Transplantation is one of the most remarkable success stories in the history of medicine. However, the need for organs and tissue is vastly greater than the supply. Transplantation gives hope to thou-sands of people with organ failure and provides many others with active and renewed lives.

The Wisconsin Donor Registry opened about fi ve years ago. In ad-dition to having the orange sticker on your license, you are encouraged to register on the Wisconsin Donor Registry at: YesIWillWisconsin.com

Although you can register at the Department of Transportation/Division of Motor Vehicles when re-newing your license or ID, Wisconsin has an eight-year renewal

process, so registering online today ensures that a person’s wishes will be honored immediately.

Anyone older than age 15½ who holds a Wisconsin driv-

er’s license or State iden-tifi cation card can reg-ister. Signing up on the online registry means you authorize the gift of your organs, tissues and eyes upon your death for the purposes

of transplantation, re-search and education.

Whether visiting friends and family or exploring new exotic destinations, travel is something most people ea-

gerly anticipate. However, it is advisable to check with one’s insurance coverage before head-ing out on that next excursion.

Medicare coverage outside the U.S. is ex-tremely limited. Outside the U.S. means any-where other than the 50 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and Northern Mariana Islands. In most situations, Medicare will not cover medical services provided outside the U.S.

Medicare will, however, cover Medicare-covered services in foreign hospitals in 3 limited situations:● Individual is in the U.S. and experiences a

medical emergency and the foreign hospital is closer than the nearest U.S. hospital that can treat the illness or injury.● Individual lives in the U.S. and the foreign

hospital is closer to home than the nearest U.S. hospital that can treat the condition — regardless of whether it’s an emergency.

Limited Medicare coverage when traveling abroad

● Individual is traveling through Canada with-out an unreasonable delay by the most direct route between Alaska and another state when there is a medical emergency and the Canadian hospital is closer than the nearest U.S. hospital.

Foreign hospitals are not required to submit claims to Medicare for a patient. If someone re-ceives services in a foreign hospital, they should submit a copy of that bill to Medicare for pro-cessing.

Medicare also covers medically necessary health care services received on a cruise ship when the doctor is allowed under law to provide medical services on the cruise ship, and the ship is in a U.S. port or no more than 6 hours away from a U.S. port when services are received. Conversely, if the ship is more than 6 hours from a U.S. port, services will not be covered.

Medigap policies may offer additional cover-age for medical services provided outside of the U.S. Some Medigap policies will provide foreign travel emergency health care coverage. Plans that do offer this type of coverage will typically pay 80 percent of the billed services after the

GWAAR Legal Services Team

yearly deductible is met. There are of course other limitations and exceptions to coverage with Medigap policies, so it important for travelers to check with their insurance agent before going abroad.

Medicare Advantage plans may also offer cov-erage for health care services provided outside of the U.S. Again, coverage may be limited, if it is available at all. Reviewing the yearly summary of benefits is advisable if a person is relying on an Advantage plan for international coverage.

Veterans or member of a veteran’s family may have coverage outside of the U.S. Reimbursed medical care for U.S. veterans residing or trav-eling in Canada and other foreign countries, however, is typically limited to treatment for VA-rated, service-connected disabilities only. Nonetheless, there may be additional coverage through veteran’s health insurance policies such as TRICARE.

Lastly, travel insurance is an option one should consider for medical coverage outside of the U.S. However, not all travel insurance includes health coverage.

We will have enjoyed our fifth tour to Italy as you read this column. I have

read that anticipation is part of feeling happy. Prior to leading a tour I daydream about all the wonderful things we will experience and enjoy. Italy is a country where I could easily spend a month driving from one charming town to the next and basking in the food, history, great art and culture.

This tour held a special significance for our family. Joining us were my five sisters and three of their spouses. In addition a former exchange student, James Boucher and his wife, Lucy arrived from Dunkirk, France to be part of our group. My oldest sister, Sister Adele Thibaudeau is celebrating her 50th year anniversary as a member of the Sisters of St. Francis in Milwaukee,

Wis. To celebrate we spent four days in Assisi, home of St. Francis and St. Clair. Our time included day trips to Siena, and Perugia.

The remainder of the tour included travels to the Isle of Capri and staying in Sorrento on the Amalfi Coast. This was a part of Italy we had not explored and I was eager to enjoy the beauty of the coastal towns. When Wayne and I create a tour we strive to take the best of what we have experienced previously and adding on something new to keep it fresh.

As we left the beauty of the coast we traveled to Rome. Rome is a big city filled with historic sites such as Trevi Fountain, the Coliseum, St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and the Forum. To view photos of our tour go to somedaytravel.com.

Wishing you safe travels wherever you go.
