PRE-TRIP JOURNAL ENTRIES

Prior to leaving on our journey, record your thoughts about (reflect on) what you think you will learn

from your experience of:

encountering the poverty you will see in Cambodia;

becoming more sensitive to the global issues and providing aid to those in need; and

working to help those in need.

Read the following questions to help you record your thoughts:

1. What kinds of things do you think you can expect in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap?

2. What do you think rural Cambodian villages will be like? How will you prepare yourself?

3. During our time in Phnom Penh, we will visit the Tuol Sleng Museum. It will expose you to graphic

and horrific images of atrocities Cambodians endured during recent wars. How do you think you

might react to this?

4. How will you react to differences in food and social norms?

5. Do you think you will be able to relate to the children/teenagers in any way? Explain.

6. How do you think you may discover / develop your leadership potential?

7. How could the experience change your perspective of the world?

8. In what ways do you think this journey may change you? “It will not change me” is not an acceptable

response!

9. When thinking about what you are going to experience on this adventure, what emotions come to

mind? Examples might be: afraid, proud, courageous, grateful, lonely, happy, ecstatic…

Grade 11 and 12 CAS Reflections (For G11 & G12 students ONLY) Indicate which learning outcomes you will reflect on. This is required if you wish to count this experience

week trip as part of your CAS programme.

Increased their awareness of their own strengths and areas for growth

They are able to see themselves as individuals with various skills and abilities, some more developed

than others, and understand that they can make choices about how they wish to move forward

Undertaken new challenges

A new challenge may be an unfamiliar activity, or an extension to an existing one.

Planned and initiated activities

Planning and initiation will often be in collaboration with others. It can be shown in activities that are part

of larger projects, for example, ongoing school activities in the local community, as well as in small

student-led activities.

Worked collaboratively with others

Collaboration can be shown in many different activities, such as team sports, playing music in a band, or

helping in a kindergarten. At least one project involving collaboration and the integration of at least two

of creativity, action, and service is required.

Shown perseverance and commitment in their activities

At a minimum, this implies attending regularly and accepting a share of responsibility for dealing with

problems that arise in the course of activities.

Engaged with issues of global importance

Students may be involved in international projects but there are many global issues that can be acted

upon locally or nationally (for example, environmental concerns, caring for the elderly)

Considered the ethical implications of their actions

Ethical decisions arise in most CAS activities (e.g., on the sports field, in musical composition, in

relationships with others involved in service activities). Evidence of thinking about ethical issues can be

shown in various ways, including journal entries and conversations with CAS advisors

Developed new skills

As with new challenges, new skills may be shown in activities that the student has not previously

undertaken, or in increased expertise in an established area.

Dear Trip Leader,

Please comment (in Managebac) on this studentʼs punctuality and attendance, their effort and commitment,

and add any other comments you wish to make. Please tick the appropriate boxes:

This student was a Student Leader on this trip.

This student satisfactorily completed this activity.

Not satisfactorily completed

This student still needs to complete some tasks (i.e. submission of video or finished display board)

Sladeʼs Braid In the 1880s, the American medium Henry Slade used to convince people that he

had access to the Fourth Dimension the Spirit World using a strip of leather with

two cuts along it. He would get someone to make a mark on the leather, to prevent

substitution. Then he would hold it under the table for a few moments, and produce

it again braided! In 4D space, strips can be passed over each other and woven

together by pushing one temporarily into the Fourth Dimension, moving it into the

right position, and then pulling it back into ordinary 3D space. That is what Slade

pointed out, and what he claimed proved he had the ability to access the Fourth

Dimension. How did he do it? Find the answer on the following page

Sixteen Matches Sixteen matches are arranged to form five identical squares. By moving exactly two

matches, reduce the number of squares to four. All matches must be used, and every

match should be part of one of the squares. Find the answer on the next page

Mathemagic ʻI am asking you to do some sumsʼ. ʻMy magic calculator will use the results to display your age and your house numberʼ:

• Enter your house number.

• Double it.

• Add 42.

• Multiply by 50.

• Subtract the year of your birth.

• Subtract 50.

• Add the number of birthdays you have had so far this year, i.e. 0 or 1.

• Subtract 40.

ʻI now predict, that the last two digits of the result will be your age, and the remaining digits will be the number of your house.ʼ

Slicing the Doughnut

If you cut this doughnut with three straight slices, what is the largest number of pieces you can create?

(Youʼre not allowed to move the pieces between cuts.)

17

Experience Cambodia 2012 - Booklet

SOLUTIONS

Riddles: 1) Short 2) Ton 4) The Sun never sets and rises at the same time

5) George 3) No, coins used the years before Christʼs birth did not display B.C.

Sladeʼs Braid Sladeʼs braid trick relies on a topological curiosity: his leather strip can be deformed, in perfectly ordinary 3D

space, to end up braided. So all he had to do was fiddle with it under the table until it reached the braided state. Iʼve

separated the three strips in my picture to make the method clearer. This sequence of moves introduces six extra crossings

of the three strips, so by repeating it you can make really long braids. Slicing the Doughnut: 9 pieces can be obtained
