EXPERIENCE WEEK 2012 STUDENT BEHAVIOUR CONTRACT

For Experience Week to be successful and meaningful for all those involved, students are expected to participate in all activities

and embrace the cultural spirit of adventure. By being a responsible, active and enthusiastic participant, all those involved will

benefit. However, to ensure clarity and consistency for everyone involved, a list of reasonable student behaviour expectations is

given below. All students are expected to abide by the following behaviour expectations at all times. I agree to:

be a responsible, active, and enthusiastic participant in my Experience Week programme.

be on time for all group gatherings, meetings, excursions, etc.

always work under a “buddy system” and never to leave the group, hotel, etc. without prior permission from a

teacher.

dress appropriately, responsibly and respectfully for any given excursion, activity, etc.

be respectful and caring of others, as well as myself, and to act sensibly at all times.

follow the guidelines set down by any of the organizers, that are involved in my programme.

take care of the local environment by being responsible for my own rubbish and by not littering, etc.

respect the local culture and will not do anything to offend/insult the local population.

no girls are to be in boys' rooms or boys in girlsʼ rooms at any time DAY or NIGHT.

there is no smoking at any time even if, e.g. a host student smokes during planned activities.

understand that alcohol of any kind may not be consumed at any time

understand that illegal drugs of any kind may not be used at any time

the school nurse must be advised of all prescribed medications being taken and/or of any allergies or medical alert

conditions that may give rise to the need for medical attention during the programme.

while we are away, the teacher in-charge must be notified IMMEDIATELY of any prescribed or non-prescribed

medication being taken.

understand that mobile phones are permitted to allow for parent communication in the evenings only, but the school

accepts no responsibility for loss or theft.

understand that personal MP3 players and portable gaming devices are permitted, but their use is restricted to

flights and within hotel rooms. Such devices must remain in the hotel room and must not be taken on planned

activities, as they will be confiscated.

understand that curfew is determined by the trip leaders (and usually around 10:30 p.m.) and I am expected to be

back in my assigned room and I will not thereafter leave my room.

TUOL SLENG S-21

Tuol Sleng is a former high school which was used as the notorious Security Prison 21 (S-21) by the Khmer Rouge communist regime

from its rise to power in 1975 to its fall in 1979

Situated in the lush garden of the French Cultural Center, this Mith Samlanh training restaurant run by former street youth in training

serves breakfast from 7.00am onwards and a Khmer lunch buffet to small prices.

Sladeʼs Braid In the 1880s, the American medium Henry Slade used to convince people that he

had access to the Fourth Dimension the Spirit World using a strip of leather with

two cuts along it. He would get someone to make a mark on the leather, to prevent

substitution. Then he would hold it under the table for a few moments, and produce

it again braided! In 4D space, strips can be passed over each other and woven

together by pushing one temporarily into the Fourth Dimension, moving it into the

right position, and then pulling it back into ordinary 3D space. That is what Slade

pointed out, and what he claimed proved he had the ability to access the Fourth

Dimension. How did he do it? Find the answer on the following page

Sixteen Matches Sixteen matches are arranged to form five identical squares. By moving exactly two

matches, reduce the number of squares to four. All matches must be used, and every

match should be part of one of the squares. Find the answer on the next page

Sladeʼs Braid Sladeʼs braid trick relies on a topological curiosity: his leather strip can be deformed, in perfectly ordinary 3D

space, to end up braided. So all he had to do was fiddle with it under the table until it reached the braided state. Iʼve

separated the three strips in my picture to make the method clearer. This sequence of moves introduces six extra crossings

of the three strips, so by repeating it you can make really long braids. Slicing the Doughnut: 9 pieces can be obtained
