T A R U N C H A N D N A on leadership development

Passion makes the impossible possible. Time and again I have seen leaders with tremendous passion overcome some skill limitations to rally the core team towards the goal. But a leader with great skills and no passion will find the same task daunting. Passion is the magical ingredient in a successful leadership mix.

Transform your senior management. Push the envelope

Most organizations struggle with developing leadership bench strength

in a sustainable and organized way. Having worked with over 500 top leadership teams across diverse businesses, we have seen these struggles up close. We bring to the table an approach that may help push the envelope when it comes to developing the best talent.

A p r o c e s s n ot A n e v e n t

We believe that leadership development does not happen overnight. It is a long-

term process that starts at the top. Plato once argued that he needed 50 years to train a good leader! Our timeline though, is more realistic and our experience tells us that it takes 6 to 9 months for meaningful change to occur at the leadership level and close to 2 years for it to spread across the organization.

W e l i s t e n A n d d o n ’ t p r e s c r i b e

Clearly, one size does not fit all when it comes to developing people. Such efforts must be focused on the individual while

addressing real business needs. We first take time to listen to you and your team to identify the key strengths and opportunities and only then start thinking of what needs to be done. We are selective about the work we do to ensure that we add value and create deep relationships. These interventions only succeed when we create a lasting relationship with our customers.

i n c lu s i v e A n d co n t e x t uA l

Having listened to the key folks who drive your organization, we work with all

stakeholders to design the intervention required, in line with your values and culture. We take the time to understand the maturity level of your organization and its processes to determine where new ones need to be built and where old ones need to change, be followed, or remain as they are.

e x p e r i e n c e d A n d d i v e r s e t e A m

We bring a diverse set of people with high credibility as trainers, coaches and consultants to work with your key people during this journey. We bring our varied

and vast experience – from creating and running enterprises to handling corporate boardrooms - to the challenge of developing teams and your leaders. We have done it on many occasions and learned immensely from our successes and failures. Above all, our clients are our best advertisements.

e n g Ag i n g m e t h o d o lo g y

Learning by being told is perhaps efficient but it is definitely not very effective or memorable. Our experiential methodology engages people and they learn from their

own experiences. Training, Consulting and Coaching doesn’t have to be a chore. Our interventions are hands on, engaging, fun, and exciting. Whatever the content of the workshop, we put in a lot of effort to ensure that our method is always in a ‘learning-by-doing’ mode rather than a ‘listen-to-me’ mode. This ensures the learning is both personal and sticky.

Turn good employees into great teams. Add, stir and savour

We have seen that what truly helps realize a vision in an organization

going through transformation is a ‘core group’ of committed and equipped people. The size of this core group and it’s constituents are both extremely important since it is this ‘critical mass’ that helps tip the balance from current reality to the desired vision.

The ability of the top team to be a cohesive unit that walks the talk is critical. Great individuals do not necessarily make a great team. Great teams always have—

h u n g e r f o r Ac h i e v e m e n t

Developing an excellence mindset and the ability of the team to take smart risks in ambiguous and uncertain situation is essential. Teams need to set high benchmarks that draw out the individual potential of team members, by helping them to step out of their comfort zones.

W i n – W i n m i n d s e t

The ability of the top team to set aside their departmental hats and learn to wear the organizational hat, often decides

whether the organization will tackle challenges seamlessly or lose valuable time in protecting turfs and fostering silo thinking. The lack of this ability often leads to an absence of a win-win mindset, thus preventing true collaboration between departments.

h i g h l e v e l o f t r u s t

The level of trust often dictates the extent to which team members are willing to be vulnerable. This in turn dictates the openness with which mistakes are shared

G A U R A v S A k l A N i on winning teams

The interpersonal relationships between members in winning teams is not transactional but works on a win-win partnership mindset. A top team must develop the desire and ability to put the team above all else, without exception.

and tackled, support is provided and the fearlessness with which thoughts and ideas are brought to the table. Teams that fail to look at a challenge from everyone’s perspective often do not leverage the diversity of the team to create innovative solutions. A failure here often leads to a waning of commitment and accountability in the team.

b e l i e f i n t e A m g o A l s

For teams to be able to intellectually argue and debate critical decisions in today’s

rapidly changing environment, members need to create functional norms and have a shared understanding and belief in the team goals. They also need skills to engage in authentic conversations without unnecessary posturing. Only then can teams achieve common goals.

o u r g o A l

Our goal is to help executives become aware of the way they think and interact and how that impacts their team and their organization. We show teams an

honest mirror to help them understand their current reality. Following that we help them build skills, attitudes and trust over a period of time to enable leaders to cohesively take on challenges that lead to the realization of the organizational vision.

Page 8: Exper Brochure

Building attitudes, behaviours, skills and processes, the sticky way

Sustainable change can only begin at the top. Once we have your top

team committed to this intervention we roll out this comprehensive process that looks at developing people in line with organizational needs.

A p p r e c i At i v e i n q u i ry

Once a CEO gives us his view of the organizational needs, symptoms and issues, we enrich and validate them by listening to other stakeholders. This provides us greater insight into the

business context and people issues. We use this to reach an agreement on issues that need attention and establish the way forward. The resulting approach has six essential components—

m i n d s h i f t w o r k s h o p

This is an opportunity for the top team to introspect on their achievement orientation. We create an environment that encourages team members to be vulnerable and authentic. This helps the team learn to appreciate differences while building trust

and mutual respect. Members come back with optimism and renewed relationships.

W o r k p l Ac e c h A l l e n g e s

To apply the learning in a real work context, we help the team finalise a list of adaptive challenges or opportunities that can provide a quantum leap in performance. Since adaptive challenges are largely ambiguous and have unclear solutions, they need to be worked on in cross functional groups with collective will and effort – a big first step in breaking the oft-cited, dreaded silos.

S AT i N D R A S e N on process orientation

I strongly believe that a deep people focus has to be combined with deep process knowledge and business orientation to truly drive quality and therefore profitability. I have often seen organizations focusing excessively on one while discounting the other based on their culture and mindset.

Page 9: Exper Brochure

Building attitudes, behaviours, skills and processes, the sticky way

s k i l l s & co m p e t e n c y d e v e lo p m e n t

Based on our interaction and your training needs assessment process, we jointly identify the skills that need to be developed. We have developed a series of high impact skill modules that we have found to be relevant for most teams. We then co-develop a skill modules calendar.

d e v e lo p i n g f u t u r e l e A d e r s

When triangulated with performance data, potential assessment and the 360-degree, our extensive interaction with the team

helps you identify high potentials. We then create focused individual development plans that could include training, on-the-job exposure and one-on-one coaching.

A l i g n W i t h h r p r o c e s s e s

This journey is designed to be in sync with your existing performance management and talent selection processes. Wherever possible, we use what exists or we help you articulate vision and values, design various scorecards, and build your leadership competency framework and

performance management process.

g o v e r n A n c e & m e A s u r e m e n t

Often, business as usual takes precedence over people development and adaptive challenges. To help stay on track, we recommend that the CEO head a governance system to periodically review the development journey. At the end of a 9-month period, we measure progress by repeating the 360-degree feedback, self-evaluation and analyzing progress on the adaptive challenge.

Page 10: Exper Brochure

When everyone believes in the same things, success is on the cards

Great ideas and approaches amidst a small group inside a room or around

a coffee table remain just that. To truly derive value from it, change needs to be thoughtfully and systematically spread across all levels in an organization. Ideas don’t move mountains - bulldozers do (aka the critical mass in your organization).

c A s c A d e to A c r i t i c A l m A s s

Once the senior management embarks on its journey to become a great top team, the time is right to cascade that changed

mindset downwards through your internal resources acting as coaches, mentors and project champions. Exper can help embed the key attitudes and behaviours in your critical mass of people through hard-hitting outdoor-based workshops.

These programs are most effective when preceded by the leadership journey. However, when designed around clear expected outcomes, they can be very powerful as stand alone initiatives to foster attitudinal awareness and change mindsets.

S A U R A b H S A k l A N i on managing change

I have observed that the main problem during change efforts emerges when we move from knowing what is best for our organization to actually doing it. This is where resistance to change enters the scene and the only way to overcome that is to build a desire to change at the individual level.

Page 11: Exper Brochure

To help participants seek their own answers, our facilitators replace the traditional ‘Telling’ approach with one that helps them learn ‘Inside-Out’. To allow deep introspection, we prefer locations that are close to nature, devoid of distractions and luxuries. Nature inspires awe and wonderment and makes it easier tolook inwards. We have created beautiful outdoor learning centers, designed specifically for these programs.

s h A k e - s h A r e - s o A k - s h A p e

Learning is sticky and relevant to the work place because we first ‘Shake’ participants out of their comfort zones by creating a learning environment through Adventure, Activities, and Simulations to bring out various behavioral patterns. We then help participants ‘Share’ and discuss their feelings, thoughts, assumptions, and ideas in an interactive environment.

Confronting long held paradigms can sometimes be unnerving, so we provide a reflective environment where participants

‘Soak’ the experience and look back at what happened in a personal context to better understand themselves and others. To assist, we provide insightful frameworks to sharpen individual learning using ‘here and now’ data and, contemporary and seminal research.

Finally, we leverage the post program emotional charge and provide skills and tools to ‘Shape’ the learning into concrete workplace action.

Following is a short description of our core programs. These are most effective when conducted as part of the Exper Leadership Journey. However, many of our clients request us to conduct individual workshops customized around their specific learning needs.

e x p e r l e A d e r s h i p j o u r n e y

Leadership development does not occur overnight. Our flagship product, The Exper Leadership Journey, is a 6-9 month long partnership that starts from the top. We begin with an Appreciative Inquiry to understand the members, the culture and the current reality. This is followed by a series of programs, work place projects and coaching assignments. Buy in of the CEO is essential for this program.

The course content is influenced by the works of Peter Drucker, Warren Bennis, Noel Tichy, Peter Senge, Daniel Goleman, C.K Prahlad, Sumantra Ghoshal and Jim Collins.

Recommended for the top two tiers of an organization, some of the learning modules can be cascaded to other levels to build an aligned critical mass in your organization.

This 3-day residential workshop helps teams learn to collaborate and engage with energy and strategic

intent. In an outdoor environment designed to allow experimentation and reflection, participants are guided to understand each other and the human dynamics resulting from differences in styles, preferences and behaviors. Participants see how they affect their colleagues - positively and negatively - and gain practical tools and frameworks that help them work more effectively to achieve more challenging goals.

The works of J.R Kaizenbach, Patrick Lencioni R. Meredith Belbin, and Steven

Covey influences the course content. The program also uses profiling instruments like Kolb’s LSI, the Johari model, the Thomas Kilmann Instrument, and MBTI.

Recommended for middle to senior level teams, this program works best for teams that need to energize, develop synergies, work across functions, break silos, and unblock communication channels.

It is totally experiential and we have created engaging activities to emphasize learning from seminal works of Peter Senge, Steven Covey, Martin Seligman and David McClelland. Participants use the intellectual stimulation and emotional charge to be optimistic, proactive and dig within their reserves to raise the bar when they return to work.

In the corporate world, managing successful change depends upon the ability

to positively influence the actions of a key group of people. Yet the scary fact remains that up to 70% of change initiatives at work fail! Exper licenses a powerful computer based change management simulation developed by the Centre for Advanced Learning Technologies at INSEAD to help participants experience the implementation of an actual workplace change. In this 2-day workshop, participants gain insights and skills in the theory and practice of change management. Using the simulation as the central piece, this workshop also uses other experiential tools to understand the change process, dynamics of resistance, and

stakeholder needs, to help lead successful change in your organization.

l e A r n i n g to i n n o vAt e

Breakthrough ideas are not dependent on luck and can come through discipline and systematic

processes. Our 2-day workshop uses lateral thinking techniques to help you explore not just out-of-the-box solutions but even dig in completely new boxes! Participants build awareness and skills for the brainstorming process and apply them to workplace scenarios. They learn to use provocation and movement to generate alternatives and understand how a culture of lateral thinking can lead to consistent innovations. Participants will come back with a bucketful of usable ideas. It helps to have a cross hierarchical group and a senior decision maker to make sure that relevant ideas are not lost post-workshop.

This 2-day workshop is recommended for people

struggling with key communication skills, lacking assertiveness or shying from difficult conversation. Participants understand and practice skills for both one-to-one and one-to-many conversations. The sessions use video feedback to build skills to address large groups, deal with difficult conversations, develop assertiveness, and have critical conversations including feedback exchange. The program addresses both the theory (what is happening in the mind) and skills (how to over come) to become effective and create impact.

To most people, persuading is a simple process. If they offer sufficient reasons why someone should do something, they’ll do it, right? Sadly, this doesn’t always work. While Negotiations have to do with resolving issues where there may be a potential conflict of interest, Persuasion and influencing is simply a skill that helps you get things done effectively. This workshop helps you examine your natural persuasion style and understand how to win the other side over. Participants will learn how to frame and present their arguments, reason with the other side, and remove barriers to create alignment.

This 2-day workshop helps senior managers effectively coach their reportees.

Participants learn how to acknowledge and understand the current state of the coachee (skills, behaviors, and roles), explore the desired vision in terms of skills, behaviors, and roles; and focus on actions and accountability through immediate actions, milestone tracking, and assessment.

The workshop aims at understanding the EQ framework – the levels from

self-awareness to managing relationships – and utilizing it. Participants get a handle on the ability to identify, use, understand, and manage emotions in positive and

constructive way. It will help them become aware and practice recognizing their own emotional state and the emotional states of others. Depending on the context, need and readiness of the group, we use tools and instruments like the MSCEIT (Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test) for self-awareness and the FIRO-B and MBTI to help them enrich relationships.

Sustained leadership development must be supported by excellence in

organizational systems and processes. We help you develop, refine, or deploy key processes such as a relevant competency framework, feedback, performance and talent management, and reward and recognition. Since roles, processes, and formal reporting relationships lie at the heart of organizational efficiency, we also help you with your overall structure of the organization and the operational design which details roles and processes. In addition to this, we can also help you sharpen or action the vision and values that drive the culture in your organization.
